Around SBN: Raiders' GM Begins The Purge

Interesting PSU stat on QB experience.

From the CDT:

In Joe's 43 years of coaching, he's entered the season with a senior starting QB with at least one year of starting experience 14 times.  In those 14 seasons, the Lions averaged 9.7 wins and a winning percentage of .810.  Paterno's teams overall (43 years) averaged 8.9 wins or .749 overall.

In those 14 years, PSU won 2 NC's (82 & 86), and 2 undefeated seasons (69 & 94).

Just thought was a good omen for this season.......

Also consider that 2004 fits that pattern

Take away a 4-7 season, and the average wins per year goes up to 10.2.

Happy to help with the jinx.

2003 fits as well

and that’s a 3-9 season.

Then again, 2005 & 2008 had first year starters, and look how those turned out. I’d have to imagine from the implied years above that 68 & 73 had first year starters as well.

Good point, but...

I could see the logic in including ’03 in this stat, because really- how many times have we ever had a junior QB come back with at least one full year of starting experience under his belt?

that was mostly what I was thinking

but also I just misread it and didn’t see starting senior

Let's see:

Tony Sacca, definitely.

Maybe Wally Richardson?

Although I guess the question is did the person need to start the whole season, a few games, or what?

The original position was 'at least year of starting experience'

I take that to be at least a full season.

So how many times have we ever had a sophomore (or freshman) start every game?

also, does this take into consideration

if the starter is injured one week? Does he then not qualify?

Hmmm...

In Mills’ case, I’d have to say yes, because he had plenty of experience before 2003 to back it up.

Regardless, I’d have to take a minimum of 11 starts as my basis for calling it a ‘full season’, even if those games were spread out over a couple of years.

This is what I've said all along.

How many seasons have we underachieved because we were starting a QB because he was a senior. Then the next year it’s the same thing. All of our great teams have had multiple year starters (2005 being the exception). As long as Clark stays healthy this year, that’s why I think Devlin leaving was best for us in the long run. It allowed us to land Newsome, who will probably be a three year starter until he’s done.

13 DAYS 12 HOURS 38 MINUTES 41 SECONDS UNTIL KICKOFF!!!

I do not think '94 counts in here either

since I believe that John Sacca started a portion of the ’93 season. Just being a stickler for the rules here.
