Hype Machine: I Make Big?
An admission from one of it's own processors?
Hey, Doug: Is it a testament to Terrelle Pryor's ability or an indictment of the Big Ten that he is preseason offensive player of the year? I mean, his competition was Penn State's Evan Royster and Darryl Clark and Illinois' Juice Williams? That's not exactly Tim Tebow, Colt McCoy, Jahvid Best or Josh Nesbitt.
In my opinion, it is pretty scary how fast the Big Ten has fallen. I think Pryor has ability, but for someone who's about as accurate as Ricky Vaughn to be preseason player of the year speaks to a dramatic lack of talent. -- Jeff Huber, Bay Village
Hey, Jeff: I think it's an indictment of the Big Ten and also an instance of the hype machine overheating.
[...]
Pryor is going to win his fair share of awards. But it's better for everyone, the Big Ten included, if he earns them.

WHAT??!!! Did he just have it both ways???
Big Ten suck, Pryor is overrated, so in order for Pryor to earn the awards, the Big Ten has to get better quick or Pryor will stay overrated because we can’t measure how good he is unless the Big Ten actually is an elite conference, which it isn’t so Pryor will remain overhyped even though he might be really really good, which he might be, but who knows?

But he will be, and he will earn it, and it’s better for those who were not named BTPOTY because Pryor had a league-leading 151.3 passer rating, except that he didn’t really because he didn’t have a large enough number of passes (as stated by the NCAA) to give that number any validity.
But he’s no Tim Tebow.

But he could be better than Tim Tebow
If only the Big Ten were as dominate as the SEC. Which it isn’t, so Pryor really is a Tebow, Interrupted.
Stupid Big Ten.

Who knows, maybe pryor is that good.
Lets wait a few months to see how much he improved. All this pre-season crap is BS.

i refuse to believe that Pryor’s preseason POY award is an indictment of the conference or the talent Penn State has. It is an indictment of the media’s obsession with crowning players who have not earned the reputation that preceeds them.

"That's not exactly Tim Tebow, Colt McCoy, Jahvid Best or Josh Nesbitt."
he named people from 4 different conferences, thats not exactly making an argument that the depth of talent in the big ten is terrible.
PS. Who is Josh Nesbitt? And what has Jahvid Best done to merit such acclaim? Sounds like the preseason hype that DeSean Jackson received 2 years ago (granted he was a good player, but not heisman worthy ((by not heisman worthy I mean not a Quarterback))

I have no idea who Josh Nesbitt is
if I had to guess, he sounds like he would be playing running back for, let’s say, Boston College.

looks pretty good to me.

Yah if you think the Big 10 is down, you should see how bad the Pac 10 is
The fact that no one knows who Jahvid Best is, considering he’s arguable the best (haha!) RB in the country, is case in point. Everyone says it’s East Coast bias, but from inside Pac 10 country it looks a lot more like conference ineptitude.
Do I know what rhetorical means?

Hey guys Josh Nesbitt is a legit All-American...
Yards: 808
TD: 2
Rating: 96.32
WAAAAY better than Daryll Clark
by GoingDeep on Aug 4, 2009 8:14 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Just about to say that...
First off, Nesbitt is basically a RB, not a QB. Look at his stats:
54/123 43.9% 808Yds 2 Td/5Int 172Ra 693Yds 4.0Ypc 7Td
compared to Clark:
192/321 59.8% 2592Yds 19Td/6Int 79Ra 282Yds 3.6Ypc 0Td
Secondly, why did he even include Nesbitt? Was he voted this year’s Preseason ACC Offensive Player of the Year? Last year, Jonathan Dwyer was their offensive POY followed by Russell Wilson, Hakeem Nicks and CJ Spiller.

He has much more potential as a RB
He had a couple games of 100+ rushing. Do you think we will ever see a game where Clark will rush for 100 yards? I think the only chance is if he busts out for a 70 yard run or something.
by GoingDeep on Aug 4, 2009 8:39 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Yeah
Nesbitt is a great fit for that offense, although he could become a better passer. Clark doesn’t need to rush (or didn’t last year) for 75-100 ypg to be effective, where as I think the opposite is true for Nesbitt.

I actually had to look up Nesbitt and Best
No idea who they played for.
Anyway, Lesmerises was the guy deemed an asshole by Brian Cook in his Big Ten Media Day review (basically, another reporter was conducting an interview and Lesmerises just sauntered over and broke it up). He also wrote this before last season:
“Penn State will lose at home to Oregon State, then open the Big Ten season with a loss to Illinois that will begin a three-game losing streak and a free fall.”
Those three games were Illinois, at Purdue, and at Wisconsin. Purdue! Throw in that Oregon State game, and Penn State only won those games by a combined 151-51.
So before you get all excited about what Doug Lesmerises writes, keep in mind that he doesn’t know his ass from a hole in the ground, even if there was a sign planted firmly in the ground with a downward facing arrow that says, “HOLE IN THE GROUND” and someone tattooed the word “ASS” on his ass.

Honestly
I don’t understand how he was considered such a great LB and got as much hype as he did. Is there a highlight tape I should watch that makes him look like a half-way competent LB, and not just a pile jumper who takes credit away from players that made the actual tackle?

haha, I've seen that before, and I love it
but I meant like a video where he makes a good play, assuming one such video exists. Otherwise, I will forever be confused as to how he stole a Butkis award, since everything I’ve seen of him shows he’s not anywhere close to the God status he’s unrightfully earned, and thus angered Zug.

This is silly
His argument is essentially that the Big Ten is overrated because some overhyped kid got named Preseason player of the year over two guys he’s never heard of, but absolutlely should have.
If anybody thinks that they have a better chance winning a football game this season with Terrell Pryor than with Daryll Clark they are a fool. It’s really that simple. Why should we care what fools think or say?
There are maybe, maybe, three quarterbacks in college football I’d trade straight up for Clark right now.

Tebow
and maybe Bradford or McCoy.
I think Clark is probably a better passer than Tebow. I’d be afraid that McCoy’s and Bradford’s superior skill set might get lost in Penn State’s offensive scheme. So, for Penn State, the only quarterback I’d trade Clark for is Tebow, probably. For generic “team”; I’d throw in Bradford and McCoy as well.

Exactly
Pryor is considered better because he did better in High School. Clark performed better as a first year starter than Pryor (granted Clark has been in the system longer, but never really played any meaningful downs, and only a few meaningless downs). I know starting as a true freshman is harder, as you haven’t been in the system, plus the system wasn’t really designed around him last year, but still, Clark performed better, with (supposedly) less talent around him (though I still would have taken Royster over Wells last year, and our trio of smurfs over the OSU WRs).
So as far as anyone can tell, Clark is a better college QB, Pryor was a better HS QB, but Pryor is somehow better than Clark? I’m not saying he won’t be, as no one can really know that right now, but so far there is a lack of evidence to support the claim in Pryor’s favor.

Just to clarify
Are those quotes saying that the future of the program RELIES on Pyror winning awards? So if DC17 or KNew next year throws for 5000 yards and rushes (hopefully not) for another 1000, then winning the O’Brien, or Heisman or both, that the BigTen is doomed to failure?
