Of Watering Holes And Satellite Bliss

It's that time of year again. That time where you have to start thinking about where the cheap beer is, where the biggest TV's are installed, and how early you need to get to the bar to land that killer table that isn't right next to the TV but close enough to the taps to make it a good compromise.
Original Penn State Bars post is here, but due to SBN bylaws the comments go below.
You have two options, or three if you're lazy.
- Fill out the form below in the comments with your Penn State Bar de Jour
- Send me an email with the form below adapted as described in Option #1
- Drop a comment or email with a simple name and address, if you're lazy
The plan is to have an updated map -- THIS NIFTY MAP from All-Star Member Horse N Buggy -- embedded on the original post and re-linked here on Friday.
Form after the jump. Email is thebigeleventh@gmail.com
Name of Bar
Street Address
Web Address, if available
Parking/Metro SuggestionsFood/Beer - Tell us about their best bar food and any drink specials you take advantage of.
TV Setup - Convince us the view is good enough to warrant a trip off of the couch.
Seating/Atmosphere - How early do you have to arrive to get a seat? Does the place get crowded? What do they do to feed your addiction (blue band music, signs, chants, etc.)?
One Final Note - Anything you need to tell us: info about the bar, the owner, the bartenders, any good advice about when to get there, when to order, the best way to flag down a waitress...anything that you think your fellow BSD reader needs to know.

Blondies - NYC
Great college football bar, during PSU games they will fill up a huge room of PSU only fans, on the other side are the “bad guys”.
I prefer the upper west side version site, http://blondiessports.com/
All the food is excellent for bar standards.

Maybe stupid...
…but where do the ‘Burgh locals go? I’ve lived in or near the city for 15 years (excluding Penn State time) and really haven’t found a place where I can walk in and cheer with 50 other Penn Staters. I didn’t see either Pittsburgh or Philly on the list from last year…any help?
And I wholeheartedly second Flounders in Chi-town. One of the best times ever last year watching the Coastal Carolina game and playing beer pong at the bar.

…..where do all the pitt fans go to watch real football on saturdays?
i know this is a longshot, but does anyone know a place north of west palm beach to watch the game? parrots is about an hour away….

Pittsburgh city?
I’ve heard that Buffalo Blues in Shadyside has a decent Penn State crowd. Can anyone confirm or deny this? I live in the East End and am far too lazy to drive all the way out to any of the suburban locations that the “official” alumni gatherings are.
by donatijj on Sep 1, 2009 10:18 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Heard this too
I actually lived in Shadyside for the past two years and never made it there for a game. Aldo in Shadyside is also a popular place, or so I hear. I usually made it over to the South Side to watch it with friends, but I’ve moved out of the city. I like the Bottleshop Cafe, mentioned above, and will probably be there for a few of the games.

Spent 6 college years in Pittsburgh
Honestly the turnout at Buffalo Blues was better for Virginia Tech games than Penn State ones. But I never found a better alternative that didn’t involve going to the suburbs.

If you post a new bar in the comments
I will add it to the map right away. Anything added to the map by Wednesday will be on the map in time for the weekend.
I’m going to State College Wednesday night, so anything added after 5pm Wednesday will be put on the map on Monday when I get back.

Alas,
I’m out for the Akron game, but back up for Cuse. My fall schedule changed dramatically in August when I learned the following:
- my wife is pregnant with twins
- we just bought our first house
- my wife is quitting her job
My plan to go to 6 games has morphed into trying to get up to one game a month. Dag, and now I have to call Comcast!
Have a blast! I know your tailgate kicks some booty.

Gradulations, jtot
You mean your wife doesn’t want to go with you to Beaver Stadium while she’s pregnant? If people think playing music through your stomach somehow helps the mental development of an unborn child, imagine what being in a rocking stadium of 110,000 people would do for your twins! If the first words of the first one born aren’t, “We Are” and the second “Penn State”, I would be shocked.
But jokes aside, gradulations, and good luck.

Madison, WI
The closest Madison residents will come to a PSU bar is probably State Street Brats when the time slot doesn’t conflict with a Wisconsin game. Last year this is where many players’ parents pregamed when PSU came to town. I would add Brats to the map for lack of a better alternative — if NittanyBadger has a better suggestion I’d love to hear it, but I haven’t come across one in the last year.
by gumbercules on Aug 31, 2009 9:06 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
That's About At Close as You'll Get in Madison
The best bet is to get a group and create a critical mass, so that you can dominate the bar – actually works better away from the downtown bars and students; and, as you mentioned, when the Badgers aren’t playing. I’ve gotten people together at Tony Franks and at the west side Nitty Gritty (from which I can stumble home from), but I wouldn’t call those Penn State bars. Maybe I need to finish my basement, install a few taps, and just have people over for games.
by CheeseHeadLion on Sep 1, 2009 9:25 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Madison
I’d be interested in getting critical mass in Madison. (I live on the west side.) I’m involved with the Wisconsin PSAA chapter, but the parties are always in the Milwaukee ‘burbs because that is where most of the leadership lives. I just can’t add 3 hours of driving to watch a game, plus there’s the DD issue. I’d love to see Madison rise up on its own. I know there are several hundred alums in the Madison area, so we should be able to get 20 to 30 people together for a game. Would also be cool to get critical mass for some other sports when our other teams come to town, like women’s volleyball.
I was thinking State Street Brats or BW3 when not competing with Wisconsin games or Quaker Steak (in Middleton) as possibilities. Would love to get this going for at least a couple of games. (I’ll be out of town for most of the Sept games, in State College for Iowa, and probably heading to the Illinois and NW games.)
I should also mention that the Wisconsin PSAA Chapter is planning to come to Madison to watch the E. Illinois game on Oct 10, as UW will be at OSU that day. Planning is difficult because they haven’t named the start time yet, even though we all know it will be 11am on the BTN… I’ll keep you two posted.

DC area
The metro DC area PSU chapter has updated their “official” bars listings.
Rhino Bar in Georgetown, Carpool in Arlington, VA and Black Finn in Bethesda, MD are already listed in the other PSU Bars post. Ned Devine’s in Herdon, VA from that other post is not on the list, but that doesn’t mean they aren’t PSU friendly.
A new official bar for DC is The Laughing Man Tavern in Washington, DC. The address: 1306 G St, NW Washington, DC near the Metro Center metro stop (so pretty centrally located).

While not a N. Va Resident...
I would put a strong buy on Carpool for PSU games. Quite possibly the most fun I’ve had watching a game outside of State College. I’ve actually made the drive down there from Hburg to watch games with some friends because we have 0 decent spots and its usually quicker than driving to state college.

Food/Beer – Every possible combination of bar food you can think of (menu is like 10 pages, size 7 font), medium price range, good quality.
TV Setup – even if you’re not looking at a TV, there’ll be one in your vision.
One Final Note – Haven’t been yet, (went to Britannia last two years) … but it’s supposed to be younger PSU crowd (I’m 25).

I think the bar in Woodland Hills is Soup's Kitchen
I’ve been there before, but not for PSU games so could not speak to the ambiance. At that time they didn’t have much in the way of alcohol or drafts beer, but times might have changed. I had a cheese steak in that was solid and everyone I was with seem to feel the food was off decent quality. They did have some nice tv’s.

RTP, North Carolina
Oh Mulligan’s
100 Jerusalem Dr
Morrisville, NC 27560-7330
(919) 465-1900
Food/Beer – Full bar; food is decent. Usually run a fixed price buffet during game days.
TV Setup – Convince us the view is good enough to warrant a trip off of the couch.
Seating/Atmosphere – The Triangle Penn State Chapter of the Penn State Alumni Association calls Oh Mulligan’s home. You can sit anywhere for free, but Chapter membership is strongly encouraged (($15 per annum). The bar is shared with one other team, but most times we have the whole place to ourselves. Arrive 1 hour before kickoff just to be safe.
.
One Final Note – Oh Mulligan’s is THE PLACE to watch Penn State Football in the Triangle. The owners are Pennsylvania natives — big Steeler fans, if you can grant them the indulgence. It is common for Penn State to command the entire establishment.

Players Pub - Folsom CA
For those in Sac-town and the rest of the 916 might I suggest hitting up Players Pub in Folsom, CA. Nothing better than having biscuits and a bloody Mary @ 9AM watching a football game.
4060 Sunrise Blvd, Fair Oaks, CA 95628
Food/Beer- Full Bar; good food. Price is about average for the area
TV Setup – They love us, we usually get the big TV. Although Nebraska also calls this bar home, so sometimes we have to share.
Seating / Atmosphere – It’s where the Alumni meet. You can sit whereever but the Chapter membership is really encouraged. Get
So yea, it’s a solid place…

Best Penn State Bar in NYC
Sidebar in Union Square (Irving and 15th) is by far the best PSU bar. It’s kind of unofficial but is always packed with Penn Staters, has good specials, and the owner loves Penn State – they play Penn State songs and it gets everyone amped. You feel like you’re in the Student Section and it’s awesome.

Charlotte, NC - Dixie's Tavern
Dixie’s Tavern
301 E. 7th St., Charlotte, NC
http://www.dixiescharlotte.com/index.php
Parking is mostly free if you get there before around 6 or so. $5-$8 (I haven’t been there for a few months) after. You can park right at the bar.
Food/Beer – Mainly Cajun food. It’s always been good to me. No complaints. Wings are good too. Always a beer special going on with the $2 beer of the month.
TV Setup – Well done for a “non-sports bar”. Several nice-sized flat screens line the inside of the bar, so if you sit at the bar you have a wonderful seat. They drop a movie screen and project the game on it in the middle of the main area. All other TV’s (7 or 8 more) hanging from the rafters show the PSU game.
Seating/Atmosphere – Show up around 1 hr early to get the prime spots / big booths for a group of friends. The atmosphere is great! Almost makes me feel like I’m back in Happy Valley! They play the sound thru the entire bar’s sound system – no problems hearing and seeing the game. Everyone in the joint is there to watch the Nittany Lions kick some butt. They play Blue Band music up until kickoff, during commercials, halftime, postgame (assuming we chalk up an ‘W’). There is frequent chanting, the “Hey Song”, etc. They even have raffles and give away some nice prizes. Flip cup has been known to happen during pre-game and halftime as well out on the patio. It’s best to stick around after the game for the “going out” crowd. The bar turns into an 80’s/90’s/today dance party (everything from Bon Jovi, Beastie Boys, OAR, Alabama, Charlie Daniels Band, Kid Rock, etc) and it’s a blast.
If you want to go out to watch the game instead of watching it at home and live in the Charlotte area, this is the best place to watch it.
BTW, it’s also a popular Steelers bar, so you can go back on Sunday and watch the Steelers whoop some butt too!
