All Of Your Airwaves Are Belong To Us

The BSD mission of world media domination takes another step forward tonight when I make a radio appearance on WBGG-AM (970) at 6:25 PM in the Pittsburgh area. I'll mostly be promoting We Are Penn State 2009, but I'll also be talking a little Penn State football and the upcoming college football season. So those of you in the Pittsburgh area are expected to listen in. There will be a quiz afterwards.

He has a pretty good show, actually.
Especially when you consider ESPN Radio’s alternative. The content gets particularly Pitt-Basketball-heavy in the spring, but I believe he used to cover Pitt Basketball for the Pittsburgh Tribune Review.
He did give Penn State a little love during the NIT, but it was almost in a back-handed way – the argument over whether a first round loss in the NCAA tourney is more significant than an NIT championship run.
He just seems like a typical “yinzer”.

Which Turkey Hill?
I was in State College this past weekend and stopped in McLanahan’s to pick up a copy. They didn’t have “We are Penn State”, but they did have the Stillers equivilent Maple Street Press magazine. WTF?

Did you sit outside and set up a table for autographs?
I would’ve. Or at least stand near the stand where it’s on display, and if someone picks it up, you can walk over and say, “I wrote part of that, you know. Would you like me to sign it for you?”

Bendel is definitely a Pitt homer
but I give him credit for at least discussing college sports, whereas the other shows in the area are pro-sports all the time. I think he can be reasonable, though, he’s not going to go on a “JoePa is evil for not playing Pitt” rant. He’s more of an apologetic and over-optimistic guy when it comes to Pitt rather than a pure PSU hater.
Goofy thing about Joe Bendel is that I think he may have the least amount of pure intellectual aptitude of all the sports guys in PGH (though he’s not far behind Savran or Crowe), but his show is probably the most listenable. Madden, Cannon, Paulsen and others are smarter guys, but drive me to change the dial constantly (especially the former two).

Agreed
Bendel is pretty fair and is less confrontational than some of the other sports talk radio personalities in Pittsburgh. He seems to be more knowledgable about college sports than others as well, although understandably his takes are mostly all about Pitt. He has Beano Cook on as well on a regular basis. His show is definitely “more listenable” than some because of the lack of ranting as well.
by mundyscorner99 on Aug 5, 2009 1:51 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Yeah...
He’s really not that knowledgeable about Penn State at all, much like the rest of the Pittsburgh media. You’ll be lucky if he knows any other players than Clark and Royster, and whatever names the intern writes puts in his notes.
I would try to keep the discussion as general as possible.
Bonus points if you can avoid talking about 1.) When PSU will play Pitt, and 2.) Joe Paterno.

In reality, the post-commercial crapping on you...
…was just the host sticking up for the hometown kid, Pryor. But I don’t know what the hell Bindel expects a Penn State writer to say in response to a question of how Daryll Clark can live up to the legend of Terrelle Pryor.
The point of all this Pryor stuff isn’t to say that he’s a bad quarterback. He’s not. He’s just not a great quarterback yet.

Pretty much.
The word “legend” wasn’t invoked — that’s creative license on my part — but the substance is the same. How is Daryll Clark going to compete with the best QB in the conference, Terrelle Pryor?

See RUTS comment above
I was basically asked how Daryll Clark was going to beat out Terrelle Pryor as the best offensive player in the conference.
My response started out, “Are you kidding me Joe?”

Haha
I would have gone the total smart ass rout, and said something like.
“Wow Joe. Probably something crazy. I’d say, if he goes into Pryor’s building, beats him, and goes on to win the Big 10, then MAYBE, he might have a shot. Otherwise. Not much.”

That's it?
Oh, I didn’t realize that’s all it was, I thought you maybe discussed that with him told him why he was crazy. I’m with fugi, you could have gone for a total smartass comment (although that wouldn’t sell you many mags, but then again this was Pittsburgh radio), or just not stifle your laughter at the ridiculousness of the question.
Side note: where is the love for Royster? Is it really just down to Pryor and DC17 for best O-player in the conference? I know he’s got had his health issues, but the guy is a monster back, and at the very least, since most teams aren’t returning their big RB starters (Greene and OMG BEANIE are gone), he should be the most productive back in the Big10.
by dawsonPSU10 on Aug 6, 2009 1:47 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Granted, my first instinct is always to go the smartass route...
…but it would be well-warranted here. Something like, “How will the best Big Ten QB in 2008 match up against the QB of a passing offense that ranked 105th in the nation? I guess by doing what he did last year, only better. Everyone seems to give Pryor accolades because he’s ‘had another year of experience and looked great in spring practice,’ but are quick to forget that Clark has another year of experience as well and looked equally great in spring practice. Unlike Pryor, Clark also has a stable of experienced running backs in Royster and Green to open up the game for him as well. Until the first game of 2009 is played, Pryor is just Jimmy Clausen in a scarlet and gray uniform—a wait-and-see prospect.”

This seems to be a bit of a new phenomenon
Where the recruting rankings and hype follow these kids in to school. I can’t remember anything like this ten years ago (except maybe Ron Pawlus). But it certainly isn’t helping these kids. The show up with big heads and wild expectations, 18 year old prima donna high school kids pitted against 22 & 23 year old men. How the hell does that ever work out well? In most situations it doesn’t.
What’s wild to me is how Tressel bought into this. You could see that his team wasn’t buying it, and they were pissed because they thought Boeckman gave them a better chance to win last year. I think that he lost his seniors with that move, and you can’t lose a senior class to make a freshman happy.
