Nitt Picks Forgives And Kind Of Forgets

A truce, perhaps.

Pardoning QB14. Okay, we've had our fun with Anthony Morelli. He didn't take Penn State to any major bowl games. He may have driven you crazy on Saturday afternoons. But the facts are that he was able live his dream by playing football at a great institution, won two bowl games, married a pretty girl, and unlike many of his teammates at the time, didn't get arrested during his time in Happy Valley.

Maybe it's time to just be happy for the guy and wish him well while he waits for a phone call that may never actually come?

At 24, Morelli isn't closing the door on continuing his playing career. "Absolutely, that's my No. 1 goal, just to stay in football as much as possible," Morelli said. "Coaching is the way to go unless someone calls me up. "Right now, I'm just focused on these guys up there at the high school. I'm just getting into it and I love it. If those [playing] opportunities come up, that would be outstanding, but as of right now, I'm just focused on these guys."

"These guys" center on a tight four-way battle for the starting quarterback job. "He's doing an outstanding job with them," Sacco said.

"He's got a wealth of knowledge, with Penn State and the NFL. He's been through everything from when he was in high school to when he was in Arizona's camp. All through camp he learned a ton off Kurt Warner out there." Morelli is working outside of football now and is looking to get a job in his field. His major was recreation, parks and tourism management. But he still is hopeful to continue chasing his NFL dream.

Love Penn State football but don't get the Big Ten Network? Sucks for you. According to the Morning Call (which cites FightOnState.com), as many as five Penn State games won't escape the clutches of the BTN:

To date, Penn State's first three games are slated for Big Ten Network broadcast. Fightonstate.com is saying the Lions' fifth game, at Illinois, and still another Penn State game also could find their way onto BTN. (Click here) for the fightonstate.com story.) Penn State reports that at least three cable companies in eastern Pennsylvania -- including Blue Ridge, which is my cable supplier -- have not reached agreement to carry the Big Ten Network.

The other two are Service Electric Cablevision in the Hazleton-Birdsboro-Sunbury region and Service Electric in Wilkes-Barre and Mahanoy City. According to fightonstate.com, which talked to the Big Ten Network president, Armstrong cable and Atlantic Broadband. both in western Pennsylvania, also are not carrying the network.

There is hope for some Pennsylvania residents. The Illinois game is the real sticking point here, of course. It's no surprise that The Mouse wants to stay away from Penn State's opening three bloodbaths. Hey, schedule a good opponent and maybe someone will want to broadcast it!

Jinxie Says "Don't Worry". David Jones has an article trying to comfort Penn State fans who are already convinced that the non-conference schedule has already eliminated the Lions from the BCS Championship Game. In a sense, he's right.

Star-divide

If PSU finishes 12-0 alone or with one other team, it's going to be awfully difficult to exclude them from the championship game. If there are three undefeated teams, prepare for the screwing. My theory on this, barring a monumental Big Ten resurrection this year, is that an undefeated season will be treated as an undefeated season just like any other year, but one loss almost certainly moves a Big Ten team to the back of the one-loss pecking order among the BCS teams. One loss might as well be two losses for either Penn State, Ohio State, or whichever other Big Ten can reach that level in 2009.

Yes, It's August, And We Have PSU Basketball Items. Two Collegian articles on the hoops team. First, the veterans are trying to get used to seeing so many new faces in the locker room. More interestingly, Talor Battle is trying to deal with being The Man:

Last year, Penn State point guard Talor Battle didn't hesitate to go to his older teammates for advice. This summer he is the one being sought out for questions. "All the guys are coming to me with questions, it's different but I'm getting used to it," Battle said of his incoming rookie teammates. "It's a respect level now that guys really trust that I know what's going on. They ask me questions and I answer to the best of my abilities."

...

While the experience with his teammates is new, Battle is no stranger to having others look up to him. Of his eight siblings, six are younger than he is. The point guard's family recently moved to Boalsburg, and since returning from Serbia -- where he played in the World University Games -- Battle has been able to spend more time with his brothers and sisters.

In Scores Of Other Games: Kevin HD lends a hand to a PSU preview over atWe Will Always Have Tempe. Pat Devlin still exists. Larry Johnson Jr. is feigning contentment in K.C. Current running back recruit Marcus Lattimore is ranked the #1 recruit by the Sporting News and is #10 in ESPN's 150. Penn State reserve lineman Andrew Radakovich, who really didn't have any business on the roster anyway, has transferred to Youngstown State.

Ditto.

And I never really enjoyed piling on, but I think what happened was that the program and coaching staff were taking all the head for his failed 5-star status when some of the fault, I think anyway, lies with the his abilities outside of coaching. I just felt like he unfortunately had to take a little head after all the piling on JayPa and that #1 ranked ass-hat comment about him being “actually under-coached”. Screw that guy.

You could really blame the services, though; it’s not like AM ranked himself. And the ranking is how this whole thing started in the first place.

Ok, KHD, this provided some of your funniest typos. Both the coaching staff ‘taking all the head’ and he himself ‘had to take a little head..’

I’d say that’s quite a nice perk for both sides in this situation.

Because lots of people will want to watch it.

How would the BTN look if the only games it showed were against the dogs? Michigan notwithstanding, nobody wants to tune in week after week to see tomato cans getting kicked around.

This has always been the strategy, I think.

You get national coverage of the pasties, but then make some subtle threats by taking one upper level but not blockbuster game per year.

The news to me is that PSU could get 5 games on the BTN, I was always under the impression that we would never have more than 4 (at least in the near term).

There’s no maximum that a team could appear on the BTN. Indiana appeared on the network 10 times last season in football.

That being said, I’d be a little surprised if PSU-Illinois appears on the BTN unless the network uses a priority pick to get it. tOSU-Indiana is already slated for the BTN at night. Arkansas St-Iowa is an obvious choice for the BTN at 12pm. The other games are NW-Purdue, Mich-MSU, Wisc-Minn and PUS-Illinois. At least 2 will be on ABC at 3:30 and on ESPN/ESPN2 at 12pm — often times there are games on both ESPN and ESPN2 at noon. Even if it’s only 2 games on Disney, I find it unlikely that they’d go for both UM-MSU and Wisc-Minn over PSU-Illinois, but I guess we’ll find out after week 3 when they make the 12 day selections.

Personally, I suspect this “PSU-Illinois might appear on the BTN” to be a threat to convince PA cable companies to pick up the channel.

"a threat to convince PA cable companies to pick up the channel"

In other words: Suck it Comcast!

Actually, not that I or my family will be home to watch these games on TV (since we all have tickets this year), but my parents are thinking of switching to FiOS anyway, so we’ll probably have BTN in the near future.

Comcast

You realize Comcast has been carrying the network since last summer, right?

At this point, the BTN is carried on all the major providers within Big Ten territory. The only stragglers are smaller companies like Service Electric. At this point, the BTN is judt trying to bully those companies into carrying the channel on their terms.

by Laaaaazzz on Aug 6, 2009 12:28 PM EDT up reply actions

I don't know if it's Comcast or TiVo...

but if you look at the BTN in the TiVo channel list, it’s called ‘BIG PENN’.

Unfortunately not here in the Philly burbs

They have steadfastly refused. Anyway, we’d probably have to buy digital cable to get it even if they did offer it, and we only have basic cable.

by dawsonPSU10 on Aug 6, 2009 3:29 PM EDT up reply actions

I could be wrong, but I’d be almost certain that you’d get the BTN with digital cable in the Philly area on Comcast. So, the issue isn’t that it’s “not available” but that it’s not on your level of service. That’s a completely different complaint and it’s not going to change for you given how the cotnract between Comcast and the BTN is structured.

So, your choice is to either spend more money and get a box for digital cable or not get the BTN.

by Laaaaazzz on Aug 6, 2009 4:24 PM EDT up reply actions

Just looked it up and it seems like the BTN is available on Comcast on their “digital preferred” package. You just have to be at that level of service.

by Laaaaazzz on Aug 6, 2009 4:43 PM EDT up reply actions

Yep, that's correct

I have it on the digital preferred. I’m pretty sure it’s on the sports tier as well, as I was discussing this with a rep when deciding between the digital preferred and (regular?) digital.

by Screen Name 20 on Aug 6, 2009 4:46 PM EDT up reply actions

Just checked with Comcast yesterday

We have basic cable but it would still just cost us $5.99 / month for BTN (plus some other sports channels). There’s a one-time $2 activation fee.
We are far from Philly, so check for yourself. The live text chat was relatively painless.

by confirmy on Aug 6, 2009 6:10 PM EDT up reply actions

in the Lansing, MI area

it comes on the Digital Starter level. I have Digital Preferred (I have no idea why…I should stop paying the extra $20/mo for channels I never watch) because when I ordered it I thought the BTN was relegated to there, but it is on all Digital tiers here.

by The JuggerNitt on Aug 7, 2009 11:10 AM EDT up reply actions

We get it in the Lehigh Valley on both Service Electric and RCN

but not in the “basic package”. I think it is in the first tier up from basic.

It’s no surprise that The Mouse wants to stay away from Penn State’s opening three bloodbaths. Hey, schedule a good opponent and maybe someone will want to broadcast it!

I’ve heard that the reason the Syracuse game is on the BTN is not because of it being a bad matchup, but because the BTN used a priority pick to choose that game (they can choose a game after ABC but before ESPN and before ESPN2 a certain number of weeks each season), probably doing so to put extra pressure on the cable companies that are holding out from making a deal to carry the BTN. As a way of comparison, ESPN and ESPN2 are carrying Central Michigan-Michigan St and Fresno St-Wisconsin on that day rather than the matchup of two BCS teams for Cuse-PSU.

The BTN used the same strategy last season when they picked up the Iowa St-Iowa game in order to force Mediacom (the largest cable provider in Iowa) to pick up the BTN; they now carry the channel.

by Laaaaazzz on Aug 6, 2009 11:19 AM EDT reply actions

If they really wanted it

then why the hell do I have to wake up early to go see the game? Rumor has it, we’re going with the throw-back numbered helmets! That’s worth a 3:30 at least!

by dawsonPSU10 on Aug 6, 2009 12:07 PM EDT up reply actions

?

Maybe you didn’t understand my point. I beleive that ESPN did want the PSU-Syracuse game, but the BTN used on of their priority picks to get that game before ESPN had a right to it. IOW, the picks for that day probably wne tlike this:

  1. ABC: Arizona-Iowa
  2. BTN: Syracuse-PSU
  3. ESPN: Fresno St-Wisconsin
  4. ESPN2: Central Mich-Michigan St
  5. and beyond… BTN

Most weaks it would be #1 ABC, #2 ESPN, #3 ESPN2, then #4 and beyond BTN. But for a number of weeks a season, the BTN can either pick #2 (between ABC and ESPN) or #3 (between ESPN and ESPN2).

Morelli

I will I admit I did my fair share of AM bashing but that was due to the infamous reports coming in about his petulant behavior during practice and the Michigan game. That’s all in the past and I wish him nothing but the best. Maybe he should try and make a UFL roster. Even if it’s a backup roll at least he’s still playing and he’d only be one injury away from getting the chance to shine. Kurt Warner is living proof that anything’s possible.

It seems as if Jones is running low a material. Isn’t it common knowledge that a 1 loss B10 team will take a backseat to a 1 loss SEC/B12/USC team? A la 2008? Although I find it hard to believe they’d take a back seat to a 1 loss ACC team and definitely not a 1 loss Big East team.

Right, but Jones is addressing the concern that people have of PSU going undefeated and a 1 loss Big 12/SEC/USC team being higher and keeping PSU out of the championship. Which seems like a silly fear to me.

by Laaaaazzz on Aug 6, 2009 11:48 AM EDT up reply actions

Sure, I wish Morelli well

but that doesn’t mean I’m going to forget that he was a selfish headcase when he was behind center.

In general, I’m against really criticizing any college players, particularly PSU guys. They’re not making any money, they’re only 20 years-old, etc.

But I’ve always thought that Morelli volunteered for a lot of this. He would always talk about wanting to be a leader for the squad, but then just disappear in big moments, and skip the press conference after. Sure, I’m willing to put that stuff in the past, but I’m not going to exactly run out and buy a #14 jersey either.

I wouldn't trust old rooster me neither.

I concur

except for the fact that #14 is one of the best most traditionally awesome numbers at PSU – which is why, I, personally, don’t agree with the QB14 – because that will never mean AM in Penn State football history.

oh, and, I blame AM for his antics off the field, ultimately, the coach (as we’ve found out) is responsible for what happens on the field.

The saddest thing in life

As De Niro says in “A Bronx Tale” is wasted talent. I think that’s what we had with QB14. He was a waste of his own talent, and his shortcomings contributed to wasting the talents of some pretty good teams.

He can never be fully forgiven for that Illinois game, I’m sorry.

by ChrisHarrell's_stache05 on Aug 6, 2009 1:24 PM EDT up reply actions

The thing that turned me off most about Morelli

wasn’t the fact that he made bad decisions. Sure, that factored into it, but it was the other stuff: badmouthing his high school coach, getting in quarrels with Michigan fans (as nittanyroar noted), complaining about not getting respect and how NCAA football didn’t give him higher rankings, and numerous other first hand accounts when he rubbed people the wrong way. I hope he changed his ways, but if he’s still a jerk, I’m calling no truce on my front

Although I enjoyed watching the Pitt faithful cry about his (and Andrew Johnson’s) defection, you knew here was trouble brewing. I mean, his old man was his mouthpiece throughout that whole process. I think that's a big part of my sympathy for the guy, actually.

And I think it led to a lot of the locker room meltdowns that kind of seeped out as the 2006 and 2007 seasons progressed. He never seemed quite able to handle a lot of the things that go along with being a leader, and I can’t say I entirely blame him for it.

Half of me wonders whether he was “voted” or whether it was bestowed on him in 2007 as an attempt to infuse some confidence or leadership skills. I understand that there weren’t a lot of standout seniors on the offensive side of the ball oin 2006, but wasn’t Levi still around? Or even D.Williams as a junior? Hell, Poz was a captain as a junior.

Last minute defections

Perhaps there is something wrong with last minute defections. Neither Morelli or Devlin worked out. It’s like a girl friend dumping you then 6 months later coming back and wanting to get married. There ends up being a gap in the relationship that is part of the recruiting process.

by ageing lion on Aug 6, 2009 12:34 PM EDT reply actions

Whoa now

Devlin worked out just fine, it’s just that he competed with DC17 and lost that battle. He was a solid QB, who everyone wanted to stay and play for us in the future. He just wanted to see the field sooner, so he left.

by dawsonPSU10 on Aug 6, 2009 1:22 PM EDT up reply actions

He's gone

How can you say it worked out for Penn State? He’s gone!! If it had worked out he would be here for the next 2 years; one as an outstanding backup and one as the starting QB.

My contention in my original argument is that relationships get built in the recruiting process that is carried over into their playing time. Jay made Clarke his project (starting with his recruitment) and designed an offense around him. Is it any wonder when both Clarke and Devlin were near equal which one got the node. This all began in the recruiting process. Devlin was a gift at the last minute.

In Morelli’s case there was no long term recruiting process of evaluation. Had they recruited him hard for 6 months they may have realized he wasn’t Penn Sate material like what happened with “Shady” McCoy.

Not that it affects me

but it would be nice if the BTN set up and online stream of their games, even if it was subscription based, just to allow people who don’t like watching games at bars, and who don’t get the BTN on TV to watch the games

by The JuggerNitt on Aug 6, 2009 12:44 PM EDT reply actions

Doesn't affect me either

but that’s not a bad idea. I don’t mind watching games at bars just not PSU games, for a couple of reasons. 1) My DVR spoiled me, I love being able to rewind plays and of course pausing when the Lion’s Head starts flowing through me. 2) Mores time than not you can only see and not hear the game. If someone gets injured you have no idea what’s going on. The only time I accept/expect these things to happen is if I’m actually in the stadium. Other than that it’s best to watch in your own home or a friends IMO.

by nittanyroar on Aug 6, 2009 1:34 PM EDT up reply actions

Not a bad idea

They are online stream some games in basketball, so the capability is there. A subscription service that is realtively affordable would be a good option and fan friendly.

by Laaaaazzz on Aug 6, 2009 1:39 PM EDT up reply actions

I think I read that they are going to expand the online streaming at some point.

Dunno any specifics.

I wonder if QB14 looked into the UFL at all. If there’s a spot for J.P. Losman, there’s a spot for him. And, dare I dream, they could have a league with those two AND the Sex Cannon himself, Rex Grossman. Tell me you wouldn’t watch that.

I really do hope Devlin does well this year- I hated to see him go, but it was probably the best decision (especially looking at the QB position now).

Man, could you imagine QB14 and Grossman going throw for throw in a game against each other? Bombing it sixty yards into triple coverage? That’s a given. That epic duel should be the insignia of the “Eff it, I’m Going Deep Club.”

is there a stadium with a field long enough to contain

the dragons that would be unleashed?

Also, should we even bother having receivers, or just defensive backs?

No chance for exaggeration there. None whatsoever.

Seriously, I think Brett Favre would have to start coaching either QB14 or Rex’s team, to pass on that gunslinger mentality*

(*gunslinger mentality= apathy to interceptions)

Oh Come on.

Brett was just having fun out there. He just wanted to throw the ball hard and have somebody catch it. Is that too much to ask?

All he wanted was that, and your undivided attention.

Brett Favre sucks. More importantly, Brett Farve sucked. He always sucked, it’s just that we didn’t notice until it was too late.

Nope I'm fine.

It seems that Peter has bad aim. Peter missed, and in a wonderful twist of fate, shot and killed John Madden who was strangling me at the time.

It worked out well. For me at least.

I am willing

to let QB14 get on with his life. If he wasn’t getting the job done and the coaches keep running him out there, that’s the coaches fault and not the players. And it’s a team game and not everything was his fault.

Comcast just pulled the BTN off of standard cable and moved it up to digital, so unless I upgrade, I won’t have the BTN.

I understand David Jones’ point about the computers now having less influence than the polls, but I can hardly find any comfort in that. Remember Nixon’s endorsement of Texas in 1969? Barack Obama has shown a willingness to opine, would he make a public endorsement? Color me paranoid, but a scenario with the Lions 12-0 in competition with other teams for a BCS slot makes me nervous, especially if the other team is from the OMG SEC and even if they have one early-season loss.

It always makes me laugh how often people just can’t get the “Nittany” down. The same thing happened when Good Morning America (or whatever crappy show on at and ungodly hour of the morning) did a short segment on THON. Plus, and even worse, is the people who say “The University of Penn State”. That one is like fingernails on a chalkboard for me.

Touche

Still don't really respect him...

I’ve heard too much from people with personal connections to him to have any deal of respect for him. He cheated on his fiance (multiple times from what I’ve heard) and didn’t even have much respect from his teammates. I won’t name names but I know for a fact they hated how he NEVER spent extra practice time with the WRs and rest of the offense like DC does (which pretty much explains why it looked like they were frequently not on the same page). Starting offensive players put the blame for that disgraceful MSU game finish a couple years back on Morelli…apparently those ducks were mainly his call. I’ve also heard from a friend that actually worked with him during HS at a golf course that they would always make him do the most mundane tasks because he would screw up anything that had a minor level of complexity. Basically, i’ve heard multiple people that knew him personally say the kid is dumb as rocks and a jerk. i wouldn’t go as far to blame him for a lot of PSUs troubles but he CERTAINLY didn’t help things much at all unless we were wiping the floor with FIU. he didn’t just suck when it counted, he had an attitude problem too…sorry for the rant lol…i guess i just know too much haha

(my sources are solid here too…it helps to be at school during the same exact years as him…)

by eeberlew7 on Aug 7, 2009 6:30 AM EDT reply actions

I will agree his lack of leadership and initiative on the team was disappointing and very agrivating

“Respect” is not a word I would have used during his tenure at PSU, or his flop in the NFL. However, I believe the point of this post was that “respect” towards QB14 is mainly because, despite his short-comings in football, he’s decided to dedicate himself to being a coach for HS players. Which is why the gist of this post was towards finally letting the past and the two years of banging our heads against the wall go.

For Atlantic Broadband Customers.......

An e-mail David Dane, a VP of something……..regarding the Big Ten Network being available for the start of the season…..

“We are very close! I am sorry that I cannot be more definitive at this time, but we are talking to them every day. There is only one issue standing between us. It is a fairly big one, but not a deal killer. I think that we will have an announcement next week. I will keep you posted.”

So, who knows?

About Morelli……….the one thing I remember about him is when he threw his first pass for the year for a touchdown in 2006, against a MAC team, I think Akron. It was a great throw, but he went on and on celebrating on the sideline for a long time. I’ll never forget when Posluszny went over to him and gave him the “slash the neck” thing, essentially telling him to stop it. Maybe it spoke volumes…..

by run4peach on Aug 7, 2009 8:09 AM EDT reply actions

If I’m not mistaken, I believe he also yelled “I own this team!” Awesome dude, you own Akron.
