Whose Play Are You Most Looking Forward to Seeing on Sat?
So, with only Zug days till football.... Zug days, we've still got a little work to do. Our fearless bloggers have done us proud with the Inside/Outside features( 2?), Reasons to Hope and Reasons to Quake, aka We're Going Undefeated / We're Never Winning Again segments and the wonderfully random Fear This columns. They've mercilessly absolved us from wadiing through another list of Unit , Player or Team Rankings, have dropped out from the bloggers ballot poll and even saved us from reading anything at all about our opponent this week ;) But we've had pretty decent coverage of our own team at least and by now we're all familiar with the abundance of new faces helmets we'll be cheering on this fall (even if we're not all that familiar yet with their numbers). So let's weigh in on those players we are each most interested in following on Saturday and provide some reasons why. To help with Roster Knowledge, please provide the players' numbers, and maybe pick one on D and one on O. My picks after the jump.
On offense, I'm going with (You're My Boy) Lou Eliades. First off, I love his name. Lou's a classic name. Sounds like a Guard. Second, in 2007, all I read about was how freakin nasty this cat was and how he's battlin and battlin and sure to be a studly force. Then, injuries laid him low and when he tried to come back, he was beaten out by the rising star that was Rich Ohrnberger. Here he is now anchoring the right side of the line between Young Wisniewski Will Be Fine and another rising star in Deontae Pannell. So, I'm very much looking forward to the play of #77, right guard.
On defense, I picked another unlucky sonofabitch. You're all familiar with him. He's your 'other number 5', Jeroooooooommee Hayes! Ask anybody who's been through the rehab of an ACL and they'll tell you it's the hardest thing they ever did. Now ask em quick if they've ever done it twice. Jerome has. Anybody else remember the Blue White game April 2006? Remember that young stud linebacker blazin all around the field making plays. My bros and I fell in love that day, and we all thought we'd see more of that same aggressive play in 2008. Til that go*(&(&##m beaver cheapshotted him on special teams (why was he even playing special teams again?) and it was deja vu all over again. Well, now he's back, and allegedly starting on Sat. at the hybrid PSU stand-up defensive end position. Here's hoping he goes wire to wire this year, crushing qb's at every stop!
I abstained from the poll (the twins have tweeted they'd like their father to be straight for some reason), so as not to bind you in with only my selections. The whole roster's your oyster: go buck wild! Pick one on Offense and one on Defense and try to include the jersey number. Looking forward to reading your posts.
Yours in Almighty Zug,
jp

Devon Smith
You know, if you eyes can keep up and all that.

I think anyone OTHER than Devon Smith is a ridiculous pick, but...
Do you guys really think Akron is the team we should unleash the kid who is so fast he changes the earth’s rotation to reposition himself where he desires to be?
For AKRON, I think the best to see will be Hayes, Lee and take your pick from the O line.

If he's not going to be redshirted
I think it’s best to get him some real game experience even if it’s Akron. Maybe get a little creative with him in junk time, see what he can do.

Ok...
- Sean Lee…I just bought his white jersey and I pity the poor Akron running back getting that first handoff up the middle
- Andrew Quarless…IF he can put it all together and play like his talent indicates its dangerous for defenses with Mickey as the other option
I am so ready

DC 17
I want to see if DC can get it down with a new crew of WRs.
Also want to see Devon Smith….
and want to see if our boy SOA…who is most likely redshirting….will smile on the sidelines at all this year…

I love the first game
because you find out which freshment will play and who really lies where on the depth chart (ignoring the BS one they issued a couple days ago). For example, at the WR spot, there is room for significant PT for someone. Also, who will run with the second team OL? I think if Shrive is second team for example, he would be a canidate to play significantly a few games into the season (just like Wiz did as a FR).

Kevin Newsome in 2nd half
Because it’ll mean the the 1st stringers on offense and defense will have done their job and the 2nd half will be about keeping starters healthy and getting experience throughout the depth chart.

Newsome...
not because it will mean that the starters did their job, but because I want to see if we’ll actually start getting the backup some quality time. I want him to have decent numbers considering he will more than likely be the starter this time next year.

(Because I’d be embarrassed to be seen looking at pictures of Hannah Montana)
(Incidentally, Stacey Dash and Hannah Montana pics have both been posted by jtot, who needs to be stopped)

Did you ever see Clueless?
A 1999 satire on Jane Austen’s Emma. Stacey Dash was 33 then playing a high school teenager. Which is probably far more defensible in posting her pic than Miley’s.
But I’ll try. The miley signing teenie autographs was the perfect retort to Mike’s ‘screaming throngs of women’ comment about coming to see a podcast.

I think that is where we have the most uncertainties and where Akron will try to test us. I would like to see these guys make some big plays and more importantly not give up any big plays to just build some confidence.

Picking "one"
on each side is tough – especially coming off the “off-season!”
On “D” – Gotta Go With Hayes #5 – he’s taking scalps this year! (second would be Devon Still; chat with him on FB every now & then, he’s vexed too! )
On “O” – I trust in Royster; he’s earned it; but I want to see Speedy Green #21 roll. ( second is Chaz Powell, he has the tools; he needs to begin game #1.)

I saw Eli Rothman (?)
on Chelsea Lately and he seemed pretty damn funny. In the movie, Brad Pitt was hilarious. Diane Kruger coulda been a bit sexier, but the other chic kinda made up for it. (I just never get why Tarantino is unabashed with gratuitous violence, but shies away from gratuitous nudity). And some of those new/foreign actors playing Nazis were just amazing!

When in doubt, cheer for the barely recruited white safety not named Derek Fox.

Hmmm
Defense is easy: #45, Mr. Lee. I’ll be watching him because I know the smile that will be on his face when he gets his first hit, will be the same smile on my face. (Probably #2 is a tie between #81 Jack the Ripper, and #5 Jerome Hayes, I really want to know if Hayes has gotten his full confidence back after hurting both knees, my guess is leaning towards yes, as soon as he sets foot on that field)
Offense is a little tougher since there are so many choices to pick from. Zug is a given, but I’m going to have to go with DC17. I want to see if his dedication to working with his new wide receivers all summer long, even outside of practice, has payed off. I think the time he’s put into leading that group is going to show, and they’re going to show they’ve gelled as a passing offense.

I am a “5th year senior” working on my fifth year and she has been there since my freshman year. She was actually 16 or 17 when she became the blue sapphire, so she might still be around.

I did a little investigation into this
and found that there was an article in the Altoona Mirror answering this question.
She was gray shirted during her freshman year after coming out with only 2 stars on the rivals baton ranking scale. After a medical red shirt was granted due to an injury sustained during 2004, she was granted an extra year of eligibility.

I want to see Astorino
he went to a rival high school. Gotta root for the hometown guy, and I hope he can be something of a sure thing in a secondary that’s sure to need one.
Offense: Chaz. I hope they can cause some matchup problems with this guy. I think he’ll go further than any other individual in determining our offensive success this season.

Derek Moye
I think that he’s going to be the most important cog in our WR group and passing game because he’ll be taking the role of Deon Butler. We’ll need Derek to become a deep threat and a WR that the other team’s secondary has to account for if Powell, Zug, and Bracket are going to find space to get open.

For this year, the young guns on D … Stupar, Lynn & Sukay.
For the future, I’d like to see the development of Devon Still & Eric Latimore in these early games since our D-line depth is becoming questionable (in part because of the guy in my signature line).
