Rivalry Esq Looks at PSU
Just a continuation of BamaHawkeye's campaign to discredit PSU. He's now on the record: PSU will lose to Iowa (shocking!) Illinois, Michigan, and MSU.
Good stuff.

That BamaHawkeye is not bullish on Penn State this year. Not at all.

I mean
any team can beat any team on any day…but what is the logical argument for UM>PSU as a prediction other than ‘contrarianism is fun’? I mean what position does Michigan have an edge in? Because I can’t really think of one other than perhaps the secondary (although probably not) and maybe an argument on the oline if you consider a wash a win for the team that went 3-9 last year and is starting a true freshman. You could argue strength/weakness, but Penn State has actually shown to be better than the mean when it comes to defending a RR-like spread, so no points there.
I just don’t get the assault.

BamaHawkeye
Has to have us being bad for his fantasy of an Iowa 10-2 season to be even remotely possible. They play Penn St., Ohio St, MSU, and Wisko on the road and it’s been years since they’ve beaten any 1 of those teams on the road much less 2/4 as he predicted.
Oh yeah, they also have to beat Iowa St. on the road, which hasn’t happened since earlier in the decade.
And now we can factor in the loss of Jewel Hampton…
but in answering my questions in a previous fanshot, it’s obvious he is not making these predictions on any logical or rational basis. Then again, rational thought and Iowa seem to be mutually exclusive in my experience.

The whole Jewel Hampton thing...
…Will make it hard for my half-assed predictions to beat CFN.

That
was a fun read! I love how we can’t beat Michigan, but will beat the Buckeyes…good logic there
I surprised there wasn’t a mention of Paulus pulling a Doug Flutie BC on us in there

A few thoughts
Don’t misread what I’ve written. I don’t think Penn State is a bad team. I just don’t think that Penn State is a Big Ten Championship team. To think that they are the equivalent of last year’s PSU team is to greatly diminish the importance of the one-half of the starting lineup who graduated. I’d love to see you line up the 2008 Lions against the 2009 Lions. Who wins?
Obviously, the picks were made before the announcement that Jewel Hampton would be out for the season. I’m sure that all three of us may have changed some of our picks with that information.
I’m more optimistic about Michigan than most. Just my opinion.
As for other specific wins and losses, you’re right. It’s impossible for an 8-4 team to put the only conference loss on a conference champ. Can’t happen. Ever.
You have my word, I’ll be writing about Penn State when this season is done. If they roll to the 12-0 or 11-1 record to which so many PSU fans seem to feel that they are destined, I’ll go through game by game and explain why I was wrong. If I’m right, I suspect it will be because of some of the 5 Potential Problems that this site has so well documented. I’ll write about that too.
And for the record, Iowa has 1 game losing streaks at both Penn State and Wisconsin. So while technically it has been years, it’s not been that many. In fact, did you realize that PSU’s 2007 win over Iowa was your first in Happy Valley since the victory by your ’94 juggernaut?

Losing to Northwestern is far more likely than losing to Michigan
who will be starting a true freshman or Nick Sheridan.
He also seriously overestimates our 2008 secondary, and underestimates the improvement of the other half of our starting lineup. And Sean Lee.
I can totally see a realistic argument for 6-6 (BWare on crutches + Newton’s laws of motion = mulitple injured players) but because he didn’t make it, I’m sticking with 10-2.

Well
People aren’t mad that you are down on PSU, they are mad that you are higher on some other teams that have not done as well recently as PSU. They feel a little disrespected, wether you intend it or not. I also think you are overestimating what our expectations are for our team. Most people say 1 or 2 regular season losses(not picking bowl game.) Which is what your bretheren at The Rivalry chose. So I do not think that our expectations are that out of line with what most of everybody else is saying. You saying Iowa at 10-2 is far more out of line with most other people’s predictions than us.
They also hate you because you are affiliated with Iowa, and lets be honest, we hate Iowa round these parts.
