Penn State Moves Up To 5th In The AP Poll
They share the spot with Ye Ole Miss.
Ohio State drops down to 11th after last night's contest, and Michigan is the only other Big Ten team in the rankings, sneaking in at #25. Iowa and Minnesota both received votes.
And your Penn State votes by voter via PollSpeak.
Update: No change in the Top 5 of the Coaches', PSU stays at #5.

who the hell
gave USC a first place vote? did they watch the same game I watched last night?
We decide when you hear the snap count...
And there aren't words for this one.
Houston #4
Michigan #6
Cinci #10
PSU #15
OSU #25
At first you could call this a resume ranking, but then again you can’t because he’s got Florida #5, they haven’t even had a game worth putting on TV yet as far as I can tell. TCU is #23, which doesn’t make any sense.
Polls are so stupid, I can’t believe this is our system.
BSD
Eh.
It’s at least hypothetically possible that sportswriters have watched their local team, 2-3 other big games, and highlights on SportsCenter. Neither coaches nor their SIDs can say that most of the time (because they kind of have to spend Saturday actually concentrating on a game). Besides, the coaches’ poll still has the insane ‘must vote the BCS title game winner #1 in the final poll’ rule.
After the first two games
I am hard pressed to agree that we’re the 5th best team in the nation. I hope I’m wrong and we prove our worth over the rest of the season. Our running game needs to find some life.
Luring recruits with my new "Posting HD" scheme since '08.
We're completely untested
so I only half agree with you. No reason to think we’re #5 but then again no reason to think we can’t beat Mississippi, Cal, BYU and LSU. And really it’s amazing how few teams in the Top 25 can claim to have played competent competition.
BSD
I'm just glad another Big Ten team joined the Top 25
Welcome to the club Michigan, or whoever you are!
Ah, back to the good old days of hype
Congratulations to Michigan, the new flavor of the month
(Also, Ole Miss is going to get s**tkicked by Alabama and we shouldn’t be having polls this early anyway)

There shouldn't be polls...
and if they have them the first one shouldn’t be released until mid-October at the earliest.
Never mistake effort for achievement.

but then how would we know what games are important
whats the point in watching a game that doesn’t have little numbers in front of one of the teams?

My Rankings (Top 15 only)
1. Penn State
2. Temple
3. Ohio State
4. Iowa
5. Northwestern
6. Michigan
7. Eastern Illinois
8. Syracuse
9. Akron
10. Michigan State
11. Indiana
12. Minnesota
13. Florida
14. Texas
15. USC
Totally unbiased.
i see an error
2-12 should be TIED for 2nd. I mean, in some OTHER polls, we’ve actually been tied twice already…don’t think I’ve ever really seen that.
We decide when you hear the snap count...
Meh
I hear where people are coming from as far as not having polls until mid-October, but I’m not sure that would change anything. We’d still have media members, bloggers, etc. putting out their top 25 even if they don’t count for anything. And those polls would be the driving force behind the “official” poll in October. I mean, we already get that now with columnists giving us their “waaay waaaay to early top 25 but I’ve got nothing else to write about” in March.

They do not play Florida and the Church of Tebow
But they do play LSU and Bama.
They also play South Carolina and Vandy, who both play Florida.

It's a shame they don't
ESPN could show us footage of Tebow placing his hands on the sick Ole Miss players and healing their sickness after the game. I’m pretty sure that everyone at ESPN at least believe that he can do it.

I found this curious-
I was listening to tWWL’s radio version of SportsCenter yesterday, and they had their usual Sunday snippet about the top five in the AP poll. Now I’ve heard them mention ties when they put that on the radio before, and maybe I was just especially sensitive, but I thought it odd that they listed Olé! Miss as the fifth place team with no mention of PSU.
Now I’m almost out of aluminum foil at the moment, so if anybody else has enough to fashion some headgear, hook a brother up.

It's common knowledge
that, all things being equal, teams that rank higher alphabetically outperform lower ranking team names both on and off the football field.

I'm sure if we successfully
lobbied for a name change to AAApensylvania, some smarty pants would trump us with AAAalabama.

Some ESPN talking head listed his top four and they put it up on the screen. Either he didn’t want to acknowledge PSU at #5 or he didn’t have the balls to pick between PSU and Ole Miss.

Or Bama is also way overrated, and Ye Ole Miss beats them
and then Ye Ole Miss shows their true colors and STB in a crappy game.
Point being, either way, it bumps us up, even as much as I don’t like as high as we are already.
In all seriousness...
We are way over-ranked at this point. If you are starting your poll from scratch you’ve got to have us somewhere around 12.
This team either improves on the offensive line, alot, or it loses four games.

Glass half full/half empty
I assume that once we play an opponent with a pulse that our playbook will expand. I assume that we’re trying to build Clark’s rapport with his WRs. I assume that the running game will be much better once we’re operating at 100% Spread HD.
You see that's the thing
If were just running the ball, contolling the clock and playing defense, ie close to vest, I wouldn’t be stressed at all. But it’s been exactly the opposite.
Sure they won both games handily and easily, but it took our actual starters, and our actual plays, in order to do it. We showed a fake punt against Akron. We couldn’t run the ball in from the goal line against Syracuse.
My only bright side thoughts are these; Akron won 41-0 on Saturday & Syracuse is ten times better then they were last year. I thought both of those teams played with a “pulse”, especially Akron who could have laid down and died in the second half.
Also, has Kevin Newsome ever played football before? Matt McGloin is totally the second team quarterback going forward.

From a friend
A message from a buddy who lives in State College. I wouldn’t read much into it, but it’s entertaining nonetheless.
Big Dogg ran into a wasted Matt McGloin on Saturday night. Unprovoked, McGloin yelled, “I’m better than Kevin Newsome!” as he crossed the street. Crazy stuff.
Impossible
I was with Matt McGloin Saturday night. We were filling boxes with canned goods and other pantry items to be shipped to shelters in Washinton, DC area. The shelters there are being hit hard by these economic times. Matt, myself and about ten other volunteers filled over 100 boxes that were shipped on Tuesday. We had a nice time. Matt was with us all night. Sounds to me like another hater out there!

The wrap on Newsome
was that he was/is way undercoached. He is a project and the staff knows it. While guys like Forcier and Barkley were being flown all over the country by their wealthy fathers to attend pro camps for 5 year olds, Newsome was growing up like a normal person in a town with less than 2,000 people in it.
I’d give him at least three years, and while he may be the third best qb right now, the coaches can’t really afford to limit his playing time to the snaps that position usually gets.
BSD
Also
Unlike Tate Forcier, Kevin Newsome wasn’t “born to do this”.

You have to see his point, though
Besides- I don’t see a direct quote of ‘born to do this’, so maybe ‘groomed for this since birth’ would be more appropriate.

Well, give him a few years
We do have a history of turning projects into stars. In fact one of them is starting at QB.
Eh.
We couldn’t run the ball in from the goal line against Syracuse.
I know you guys are better than Minny (especially on defense), but they couldn’t run on us either. There’s a remote possibility we may just have a really good run defense (and a pretty good defense in general). Too soon to say on that, but it’s certainly possible.
You may have a point there
It may pan out that Syracuse has a pretty good run defense, and if that’s the case, we’ll be able to look back on that game with some perspective.
Until then, the sky will continue to fall.

Amazing what a lack of Gerg Robinson will do for a team
I really hope you’re right, and both you and Akron are the real deal, and our running troubles are because you guys have good defenses, stacking the box, forcing us to throw, which we can do effectively.
But like harvey said, until then it’s OMG WERE GOING 3-9!!!
Yup
Heck, I predicted before the season started that RichRod is going to fire GRob to keep his job after going 7-5 or so, and in fact hired him with the express intent of doing that.
I don't know about 7-5 anymore though
8-4 seems more and more likely

We'll see
I’m hoping that now that they’ve started to build some ego in their offense like Tater “I’m never nervous” Force, which will end up biting them in the ass against someone like directional Michigan, Indiana, or (and please, oh Mighty Zug, let it be this one) Delaware State.
Bowl eligible, maybe. 8-4, we’ll see, because so far they’ve only beaten one of the directional Michigans and a way overhyped ND.
Yeah, it's a bit...disconcerting
I’m quite concerned about Iowa’s defensive line.
