A PSU Take on the 3-4?
Ok, so Joe has announced that they haven't practiced any nickel packages. Which seems a little weird (both the fact and definitely the announcement). And we can guess it's because we have deeper stronger linebackers than we do corners. Fight on State has some brief coverage of how they're guessing the coaches might work that plan. It includes this nugget I found interesting:

I would love to see it
I think it will help out our D so much better. We got burnt on those short inside passes. This will help cover more and we will be able to blitz our linebackers better.

I would love to see Odrick line up at DE for a couple of plays, perhaps increasing the chances of him being drafted by the Steelers?

I'll say this...
against a “good team,” if our front “3” produced good great pressure ( & sacks ) off of this…it would show all HOW good GREAT those dudes are…

Bani
I would love to see Bani in on that 3-4 scheme…

yeah Bani
is a rusher, no? he would have to be the OLB in that scheme you’d think. As long has Josh Hull does not rush the passer. That’s not even the right word. Josh Hull slows the passer.

Absolutely
- on the outside; which would mean Hull has to remember this so he stay’s “home.”

Cool
I just watched the BTN when we played BYU in a bowl, we regularly played the 3-4 and simply either rushed a stand-up DE/OLB or sent the same player back into coverage… The benefit of which is that the offense has to guess which way it’s going to work out.
Against teams that pass a lot, this is a great way to disguise coverages…
In my opinion the 3-4 is a necessary and obvious way to play to our strengths. Let Bani and Hayes go out there as a standup DE and rush the edge the way Maybin used to. Let Stupar blitz the QB, maybe even let Hodges play a little coverage as an OLB in obvious passing situations…

I agree with most here
Seeing the 3-4 would be nice. It helps combat the lack of DL depth while simmultaneously playing to our LB strength. If they feel Stupar/Bani/whoever else can play well enough in coverage I definitely see no problem.

Let's be honest....
Yes, this would IMMENSELY play to our strengths here at Linebacker U. In fact, if we continued with a 3-4 we could be pumping out even more NFL caliber LB’s every year.
But really, does anyone expect them to truly implement this?

Not for Akron
…but to practice this and the D have this as one of their practiced/planed packages….“yes.”
When we play “better” teams…and have more ’09 “O” game films to plan/study from, I would want that in the arsenal.
…almost like a ’Spread HD “D”!

I don't like it...
Someone mentioned the BYU Holiday Bowl and how offenses may get confused on how we disguise coverages…
Detmer set Two Holiday bowl records that day and threw for over 500 YDS.
I have no doubt our Linebackers are great but LB’s just are not as fast as WR’s, especially these days and with more and more and teams running four and some out of the backfeild, I just don’t see how LB speed will keep up.
It may get us threw the big ten but what happens when we hit the BCS, maybe a Florida, we’ll need a quick DB back there not Josh Hull covering Percy’s replacement.

BBDS
Flutie threw for 400 in ’84, Detmer threw for 500 in ’89, but neither won.

True, neither won...
But i’d rather not give up that many passing yds to anyone. And Detmer’s team put up 39 or something on a team allowing like 13 average on the year. 2-0 and isn’t bad but if we play 12 games a year like that those passing stats are bound to haunt us at some point. Again, I love our LB’s and have no issues with a 3-4, there will just be times when that won’t work on some teams.
Of course, I know our coaches will adjust, they usually do. I guess I’m just talking to talk. LOL
I have the confidence in the world in Coach Bradley and crew. (And Zug).

I don’t really care how much passing yardage we give up if we win.

The general, unwritten rule...
…is that we don’t copy/paste the premium parts of the article. Otherwise, Mike and I could get ban-hammered from FOS, and we’d prefer to avoid that.
