Grading the Guido - Temple
First of all, we heard much less of the pumped in music. Good job there.
Grade for Decreased Pumped in Music - Pass
BUT, if you want to play we will rock you for as a pump up during defense, please do not play it for THREE DOWNS!
- The crowd did not respond to it on first down.
- The crowd was LOUDER without the music. Penn State fans are generally football savvy. We know when to get loud, thank you.
- By third down people were totally sick of it. My dad turned to me and said, "Does anyone actually care that they're playing the song?" Once again after it stopped, it got louder.

Even Joe didn't like the use of Queen.
Grade for "We Will Rock You" - FAIL
More Grading after the jump...
I almost forgot to mention, a the beginning of the game they attempted to utilize the "Boom Boom Clap" / "Buddy you're a boy" intro to Queen's "We Will Rock You" again for THREE DOWNS. On first down, everyone looked around and wondered what was going on. The same followed when it was played on second. It mildly caught on 3rd down, but it the involvement was poor. In all it was very distracting and took the crowd OUT of the game.
Re-Graded "We Will Rock You" - EPIC FAIL
Seven Nation Army was, for the most part, used appropriately. As I see it, it should be used for moderately big plays - 30 yard passes or runs or defensive turnovers. On a side note - Temple's student section began to mock us on this after they made some good defensive plays. Good job Temple fans. Zombie Nation wasn't over used. Again, this should be used for GAME CHANGING plays such as lead changes late in the game or late game defensive stands or turnovers.
Grade for use of Seven Nation Army / Zombie Nation - Incomplete
Sweet Caroline's absence from the loudspeaker was refreshing. I know this was due to the Blue Band playing an all Neil Diamond theme but how about we keep it that way? On a side note, we heard much more from the Blue Band at this game and so...
Sweet Caroline / Blue Band Grade - Pass
Living On A Prayer Grade
I don't care if this song is starting to catch on. We have NO REASON to be playing this song. At the end of the first quarter when we were up 7 - 3, we were not living on a prayer. I don't care if we're in the 4th quarter and down 56 points. THERE IS NO REASON TO PLAY LIVING ON A PRAYER. I wouldn't recommend any football stadium in the country to play this song. Simply put, we are better than that.
Living On A Prayer Grade - FAIL
Final Grade for Temple. It's been the best game of the season, in terms of music. Please do not over-do it next week when Iowa comes to town. The liberal use of Queen was embarrassing and please remember:
- We are smart fans.
- We know when a down is critical.
- Support us after a big play, not every play.
Final Grade - D+
We made it through the game but I hope we don't get embarrassed next week. Its time to clean up the act and start living up to being "The Best Show In College Football."
On a side note: During the 2nd quarter where I was sitting a mother and her two children (around 5 years old) showed up and attempted to sit in their seats. However, their seats were occupied by two younger guys who reluctantly left the seats after much cursing. Students and younger fans. Please remember, this is a family activity for many and if you're sitting in their seats don't swear at them. Apologize and leave. I know we can all watch the game without dropping F-bombs. Thanks.

sad
Watching on TV for the first time this season and I can still hear the stuid music in the background during the telecast. There’s so many other games I watched where between plays the band plays, or the crowd dows something interactive with the band, but at Beaver Stadium we play that stupid we will rock you beat or the stupid heart beat. It makes us look cheap and unoriginal.

I wouldn't go that far...
The pump-up videos during TV breaks, before the game and at breaks in the quarters are VERY good. I also like the use of gopsf.com. I agree with all of his non-gametime work, but not his crowd generating noise. 2005 OSU was a a special game but we don’t need that every game.
Good Reviews
I was relatively pleased with how it all went yesterday…
-…but We Will Rock You indeed sucks. Can it.
-The stated use for Seven Nation Army is a sustained offenseive drive. You get a big play, you play it, then maybe the next one isn’t so big yet positive, but you still play it. It’s supposed to create a snowball effect. I really like how the Band uses it. As far as Zombie Nation goes, it was used well also. When you wait for the right moment, it really sends everyone into a frenzy.
-Sweet Caroline seemed to not be as big a hit with the band as you would have thought. If the song is loathed by the older crowd and played for the younger crowd, the reaction to it in the student section yesterday was less than rousing (at least where I was). The band played it fully and directly at the south endzone, and for the first time I can remember, came off the field playing “Victory” to the student section rather than the west side. It was obvious who they were catering to. I don’t know whether it’s actual uninterest by the students in the song, or if they don’t know the words (some people yelled “Sweet Caroline! Ba, Ba, Ba” and just trailed off), but no matter what the reason, it was hardly a ringing endorsement for it to be played at every game like it has been lately.
-“Livin’ on a Prayer” is a good song. I don’t think most people care what the words mean, they know what they are and it’s a great sing along. I liked it when they pumped it in, and I like it even better now that it’s being played by the band. No, we’re not “Livin’ on a Prayer”, but we like it, generally, so keep it.

Thank you
For knowing the useage of Seven Nation Army, I was just about to post it. I think the issue yesterday was how the game felt. We were ahead but it felt like we were playing a horrible game, Clark had no time to throw and , when he did it was way off the mark and the D wasn’t getting any pressure on Temple’s QB and for at least the area I was in it was very frustrating and deflating, when they played Zombie Nation or at halftime during Sweet Caroline we didn’t really feel like singing or celebrating something that felt like a loss. I too love Livin on a Prayer, who cares what it means? Its a great sing a long that nearly everyone knows the lyrics to.
As a student I really enjoy most of the music (except for we will rock you, I’ve never really liked Queen anyway) and I can say safetly that in whatever section I am standing in I have never once heard someone complain about the music except for yesterday when we didn’t really feel like celebrating holding them on 3rd and 1 on our own 10 yard line and most of the people I am with are usually sober. We are there to watch a football game and cheer on our team, not grade some director of fan activities. People are always trying to find something to complain about, go to the games, enjoy spending time with your friends and family and cheer on our Penn State Nittany Lions with the other 100,000 people who couldn’t care less what music they are pumping through the speakers or coming out of the shiny instruments of our great blue band. It’s sad that we have so many fanposts about music and less about Sean Lee coming out of the game yesterday with a hurt leg, Bowman’s continues absence from the game, Quarless Aka Gods Bricks (he has tattoos on his arms, the back of the right says Gods the left says Gift) who dropped a few passes yesterday. Or Zug not playing most of the second half or wondering why we could run yesterday but not pass and if maybe we can do both in the same game once this season, or maybe runins with recruits and prospectful juniors and seniors, you know? Things that are actually relevant to our football team.

When other fans mock us for “Living on a Prayer”, I’ll have no argument.
That pisses me off.

"O Fortuna" is well-suited for the Blue Band...
Why does it have to be piped in? I mean, the Blue Band used to play it themselves.

Music seemed worse
this week compared to Syracuse. Maybe because the crowd wasn’t remotely, remotely into the game – therefore maybe I paid attention to the music more. It was pretty quiet in the stands, student section filled up around mid 2Q (although lots of empty seats), chairbacks in the south end zone seemed sparse as well.
However, I’m hoping people were just saving up for the insanity that will be the Iowa game.

Two things
More cowbell!
More Blue Band!
Maybe they need some sound reinforcement for the Blue Band, but there’s too much canned music!
They only seem to let them play “Skin I’m In” occasionally ( “Hey…Let’s go State!”) and it should be on long drives where it keeps the fans in it!
“O Fortuna” and the Star Wars Imperial March aren’t played enough!
I don’t have a huge problem with Sweet Caroline, 7 Nation, Army, or ZN as long as they don’t OVER use them, but Living on a Prayer is LAME!!!!!!!!! (as is anything Bon Jovi related)
I agree with you sir, except...
…as noted by others, Seven Nation Army is supposed to be played continuously on long drives and will quiet down for the action as appropriate. It’s not used on a play-to-play basis, it’s used for the whole drive. As long as we’re driving, I can’t get enough of it.
(On a related note, I wish they’d start playing Skin I’m In, our other driving song, more – I haven’t heard it for a long time. I swear, back in 2005, whenever they started playing Skin I’m In, the drive always resulted in a TD… There’s just something about that song.)
Zombie Nation is supposed to be used for something truly, truly special. I would go so far as to say that it probably should never be used when we’re playing a team like Temple. That said, if it was going to be used this past game, at least it was used more or less tastefully.
Living on a Prayer and Sweet Caroline should never be played ever. Queen should never be played ever. (And I’m not saying that ‘cause I’m an old guy – I just graduated in December.) And why in the freaking world would you pump in O Fortuna when the Blue Band is perfectly capable of playing it themselves and often does?
