Does Sanchez's performance in the NFL make the Rose Bowl a little easier to bear?

Ok after two games the rookie QB Sanchez has now outplayed and beat Tom Brady and the Patriots and led his team to a 2-0 start.  He's completed 60% of his passes and looks like he's headed for a monster rookie season...  Stats

In hindsight I'm not sure we can hang our heads about the Rose Bowl.  We faced an NFL-caliber passing attack lead by a guy who's now playing at an extremely high level in the NFL.  Sanchez wasn't just some average NCAAF QB, and our inability to stop him now seems less damning.

NO

still can’t stand USC, Peter Carroll, or any of them….

i’m sick of hearing “the best team we play all year is during practice”…i think Washington would disagree…

Yes But

I’m somewhere in between. I voted YES, but I don’t hate losing to them any less. I hate all teh stuff QBsneak12 mentions, and I wonder how much they’re leaning on each other this week? They seem to need to lean on each other once a year when playing some PAC-10 team. I think the Beavers last year were the best PAC-10 team they’ve lost to yet; it’s usually some really bad team that beats them. Weak.

Personally

I think all the doom and gloom about our secondary and the coaching was understandable, but in retrospect probably exagerated. We’re not used to getting beat like that, and in PSU’s history we’ve faced some of the most legendary QB’s in NFL history only to beat most of them. Detmer, Marino, Brees, Testaverde, Flutie, have all fell victim to a PSU defense.

But once in a long while you’re going to face an NFL-caliber QB on a good day, and if that’s the case all the man-coverage in the world isn’t going to slow them down.

So for me, after watching him in the NFL, I think I over-reacted about our performance in the secondary.

Regarding the Patriots (a) they aren’t the Patriots of 2 years ago and (b) he didn’t exactly beat them himself. He managed the game and didn’t look ungodly. He threw for 163 and TD, not the Madden numbers he dropped against us in the Rose Bowl.

Nope

The problem I have with the loss is that we KNEW they had a great passing game. We knew it all season, had a million weeks to gameplan leading up to the Rose Bowl, and we still looked completely lost on the coverages. We had an NFL-caliber defense (well, front seven), so we should’ve put up more resistance than what we did. The fact that Sanchez is performing well two weeks into his pro career doesn’t alleviate any of my issues with that loss, whatsoever.

We complain about Ohio State crapping out on the big stage continuously so I think it’s only fair when we recognize when our team embarrasses the conference.

NO!

Good PS teams have taken care of “great” college QB’s…Marino, Flutie (he got us once I think), Vinnie T., Brees, Brady, etc. We just didn’t have the horses last year.

Thought...

Is Sanchez really that good OR is he surrounded by good players. Place him on the Browns and I guarantee he’d be 0-2.

And...

Nothing makes that loss any worse. doUChebagS are still douchebags!

I'm glad Sanchez is seeing NFL success...

as much as Pete Carroll plays the fun loving friend card as coach (at least that is how it appears) he certainly appeared douchea through the comments directed at Sanchez after his NFL draft announcement. “Mark Sanchez is amking a mistake entering the NFL”. He pretty sold Sanchez out as an NFL failure. A high draft choice and early success is proving otherwise.

Reading some USC board comments questioning the ability of Aaron Corps and the readiness of Barkley make me think that Carroll wanted Sanchez to stay at USC because USC QB depth chart was a mess rather than Sanchez not being ready to move on.

Amid all that drama, Sanchez’s success does not make a PSU loss to USC any more palatable.

Yes and no

Yes, I think that his success quiets the flames a bit. I still don’t think many teams could have beat USC toward the end of the year. They always mentally drop a game throught the season and find themselves on the outside looking in for the title game.

However, their horsing around and celebrating everything they did was poor sportsmanship and that will never make that game easier to bear. On another note, whats the deal with this 4 year long NCAA investigation… C’mon!

Not quite.

Yes he turned out to be a good QB, but it’s a team game. The other way too stay in the game would have been to put up 17-21 points of offense in the first half, and we didn’t do that. Remember the 3rd & 1 that got stuffed, and the fumble at the end of the half?

I never cared for Sanchez (or any of the USC players for that matter)

always came off as an arrogant, egotistical, doucheabag to me, along with the rest of the team, but I’m not being bitter, it’s just how he presented himself. I loved how after they lost to OrSU, they had the camera on him at the end of the game walking through the tunnel and he throws a little hissy fit and throws his chin strap against the wall. I hated him ever since I saw maturity like that.

it doesn't help much

but one of the things I felt bad about was that Sanchez didn’t look all that spectacular during the season, just looked surrounded by good players, and I felt that against us he looked like a superstar. At least he looks good in the NFL so far (though 2 games is hardly an adequate sample size, the fact that he’s a rookie and doing fairly well speaks at least somewhat to his talent).

I wish we could have shut him down, and the loss still sucks, but now instead of thinking “we got raped by a so-so QB who got hot” I can now think “well, we got raped by a pretty good QB”.
