Dining in State College

There's been a number of good threads discussing the positives and negatives of State College's restaurant offerings but most were tangents and I can't recall a dedicated post.  What I'm looking for in this post is not a look at any of the great bars in SC, but instead places where someone has had a great meal.

Star-divide

I'll be in town for the first time this season for the Iowa game this coming weekend.  We have a reservation at Zola Bistro on Friday based on a friend's recommendation.  Never heard of the place, but the website makes it look nice (www.zolabistro.com).  324 College Ave - Is this where Roy Rogers was eons ago?

Thanks for the fanpost! Please do not post any content from a premium site that requires a subscription. Also, if you just want to share a link consider using fanshots instead. Thanks.

You can’t beat a meal at Allen Street Grill. When I was there for Akron (thanks again, rah), we had a great meal on Friday night at Allen Street Grill. But get there early…

I will respectfully have to disagree with this

I’ve eaten at Allen Street Grill twice, and both times were less than mediocre. I went with 3 other people, and no one was satisified with the food.

Calamari appetizer was obviously bagged and frozen crap, not fresh.
Lobster bisque was lobster-flavored creme with no lobster.
Can’t even remember the main courses…just forgettable.

I bleed Blue and White.

That place is long on traditon and reputation and short on decent food.

You're going to have people agree/disagree about every single place in State College.

I’ve never had a bad meal at ASG, but I guess it’s possible. I think the only safe bet is wing night at the Dark Horse…

ASG

Yeah, I’ve eaten at Allen Street a few times and always thought it was good. Granted, though, I think the last time I actually ate there was as a grad student, so my palate and opinion might be a bit different now, but at the time I thought Allen St and Spats were clearly the best offererings downtown.

Allen Street Grille, like every restaurant

does much better on non-football weekends/weekdays.

The brutal crowds are a bit challenging for the kitchen, who needs to work on speed to survive.

I'm going to that Zola Place Thursday night

I’ve never been there before. I usually go to the Ale House, but I wanted to be downtown.

That's kind of how

we ended up there. Based on what you said elsewhere I voted for the Ale house, but the mob’s desire to follow up with bar hopping downtown won out.

Thats why some people shouldn't be allowed to vote

how hard is it to jump in the car or catch the bus and go downtown after dinner. Plus Ale House has half price beer from 5 to 7 at the bar . . . wait, nevermind, I prefer Ale House reasonably busy (not packed) and the more people eating downtown the faster I get another banging Pan Roast to go with my Schooner of Dead Guy.

Best Places:

Upscale: American Ale House, Kelly’s Steakhouse
Low Key: Otto’s and
International: Cozy Thai (also have heard good things about the Indian place but havent been)
Late Night: The Diner
Late Night (atmosphere): Canyon pizza, college pizza, believe it or not tacobell

I personally love the Deli. It’s right downtown, though for the life of me I can’t remember off the top of my head what street. Whatever street is across from the honors college. Indoor and outdoor seating, good beer selection, and great food.

lol, now I'm going to be the one like HnB above dissing a place

My family and I used to go there during arts fest with my parent’s friends from college and their kids. It was practically a tradition for us. The last couple times we went there, the service was horrible, some people’s food took forever, and when it got there it was cold, some people’s meals were wrong, and the food just wasn’t very good on top of that. We used to love the place, but it seems like it went downhill the past few times we’ve gone there. Now we go elsewhere.

Not for the food, but for the atmosphere. What about the Tavern for a nice meal?

I’ve also been told the food is quite good, although I have never had the food here. But the beer is made on-premises, and it top-notch. Go on fridays for gravity-pulled Firkin specials.

otto's food = bangin'

…now if only it was downtown, or at least within a 20 minute walk.

side note: if you want otto’s beer (or pretty much any other micro-brew you can think of), zeno’s or rotelli’s (believe it or not) have an amazing bottle selection. zeno’s is a bit better for draft selection.

The Tavern overpromises and underdelivers

The atmosphere is nice and the menu has a lot of offerings that look good when you order. When you get your food and it turns out to be quite underwhelming, and the kid serving you ahs no idea how to open the bottle of of wine that you ordered, and this is after you sent him back because you ordered a bottle of zin and he came back with some pink swill that chicks drink when they want to look “easy”

It sounds like rahpsu92 is looking for something more sophisticated than Herwigs, Deli, Rathskellar, etc. (not to put down their food as being bad)

4.) The Tavern
5.) Otto’s
……

DFL.) Allen Street Grill

Zola

Sorry I’m late here, but I’ve had Zola before.

As the kbrownpsu says below, you pay for presentation, and portions are fairly small. Food was good, but by no means fantastic.

I’ll also agree with others that the Allen St. Grill left something to be desired. It was OK, but not great.

Gamble Mill is fantastic

When my parents get together with their friends from college, that’s now our new spot (see my post about the Deli above). I’ve been there twice, and while it’s upper end food price-wise, I have never, ever had a bad meal there, and everyone else at the table just raved about their meals as well. Great atmosphere (cool old building that the restaurant is in), although we did get a complaint against our party of 9 last time we were there from another patron who said we were laughing and being too loud (but our waiter said we were fine), but that was after about 4 bottles of wine split between about 5 people (two of which must have drank half a bottle or more themselves).

Did I mention how entertaining it is when my parents get together with their old college friends? Good times.

The last time I ate there

my girlfriend had a dead fly in her meal. We complained to the server, and they offered us free dessert – like we want to eat dessert there after we found that?! Anecdotal, yes, but I can’t see myself ever going back there.

If you’re looking for a high quality meal, I’d suggest Allen Street Grill, The Tavern, or Kelly’s in Boalsburg instead. (Oh, and don’t eat at Kelly’s or Gamble Mill without a visit to restaurant.com first. Oh, and don’t but any gift certificates at restaurant.com without signing up for their email list and getting at least 50% off their normal price first – they literally have a promotion for at least that much running all the time.)

Zola's

I have eaten at Zola’s before and its one of those places where you pay for the art of the food more than the food itself. The food was decent, but not very filling. You’re also looking to easily spend $100 there with drinks.

Herwig’s is fantastic, food is great and their staff is hilarious.

The Tavern has unlimited sides and consistently has good food.

Cafe 210 doesn’t have bad food and I do remember them starting to use Clem’s BBQ sauce with some of their meals and you know you can’t go wrong with Clem’s.

American Ale House

I love that place. Always a great date spot, and it seems like 90% of the students have never even heard of it. Took a date to Olive Garden and was told the wait would be over an hour for a table. Drove 5 minutes to Toftrees, walked into AAH, and got a seat immediately. The half dozen times I’ve been there, it’s been nothing but good.

Does 'nothing but good' = 2nd base or >?

Assuming you didn’t have any negative repercussions from the nearly-disastrous Olive Garden first choice selection.

Funny thing

Most chicks seem to not mind the wait for a table. I’m the exact opposite. If it’s anything more than 15 minutes (and there aren’t any open seats at the bar), I’m out. I don’t care if Taco Bell is the only alternative.

But anyway, American Ale did nothing but up my stock that night compared to Olive Garden. The OG doesn’t impress me at all.

Even if the restaurants were good, I would hate them for their commercials.

Annoying person #1: I’ll have the 5 sauce marinara.
Annoying person #2: I’ll have the fettucini [blah blah whatever]

I’d rather chew on my window sills than ever eat Olive Garden food again. My wife is Italian and we stopped at OG once when we were on the road and couldn’t find anywhere else to eat. She was disgusted that they have the nerve to call their food “Italian”.

Just so I've got this straight

In your dinner date destination rankings, Taco Bell is better than or worse than Olive Garden?

FWIW

If a girl tried to make me take her to Olive Garden on a date, I’d break the date and never call her again.

Taco Bell, she’d still be in the game.

"American Ale House"

I used to work there and we got 1/2 price booze after work. Like big triples of Booker’s and Guiness and Dead Guy 1/2 price. Awesome. The owner also owns the big place (Champs I think?) by Walmart. Man the normal wing sauce they had was sooo good. I miss it. I don’t know what they added to normal boring buffalo sauce but it was great. And the blue cheese… it had Honey Brown in it. Man that was good.

I totally forgot what that place was called and I worked there for a whole summer! funny.

This was my first Chipotle experience…and it was very good. Menu is simple, ingredients are fresh, and the prices are reasonable.

For the Record

My wife (PSU Alum) went to grad school at Iowa. for 2 years she had to put up with people giving her BS about Iowa being better than PSU. Last year did not help the cause. We are counting down the days until PSU can win so she can send some messages back to those folks…

The Powerhouse restaraunt in Iowa is pretty decent…

Iowa fans are pretty bad…not sure if they are on the level of Notre Dame…but the gap is closing.

Panchero's ain't what it used to be.

When I first moved to Iowa, all the locals were talking about how Panchero’s had already started its downhill slide. In the two years that I lived there, it went from okay to barely better than Taco Bell.

California Tortilla?

Holy crap there’s a lot of tortilla chains out there.

They all try to be snarky with their adverts. In the end they all offer meat and salad on a flat corn or wheat based bread with a sauce of some sort. I haven’t seen much of a difference.
