White House: You'll See The Rain
Refresh my memory. Outside of the 2007 Notre Dame game, has the weather ever not been crappy for one of these things?

Night games or white outs?
I remember it was a gorgeous evening when PSU got pummeled by Miami in 2001.
I'm thinking "white houses"
And I can only remember a few games where the entire stadium wore white, not just the students.

Michigan 2006 was a full White House (the first?)
Beautiful day, but it was fairly cold. I wore my insulated hunting bibs; they’re like a blanket wrapped around your legs and lower torso – wonderful. I was comfortable, unlike the MSU game last year, so I’m thinking it was probably around 50 during the day and 30 at night for Michigan 2006.
Bacon is almost as great as being a Penn Stater
It was colder than that for Meatchicken '06.
…at least it felt colder. That was as cold as I felt at a football game up until the Debacle in Iowa City last year.

Yeah, was at that one, too. Also very cold.
I think at that one we walked to the stadium from 20miles out. Uphill both ways of course.

Even worse where I was
I was at the Yale-Harvard game that day (dad’s an alum) and it was -30 wind chill there. All the food in the concession stands exploded, it was a mess.
Stupid cantabs one late after a fumble. Great game otherwise.

Most miserable game ever
I think it had to be around 1992 against Pitt. I just remember sitting in the north endzone upper deck. It was 40 degrees with 40 mph winds blasting you with rain in the face. I’ve never been so miserable in all my life. PSUncle and I left at halftime.

Fairly sure Notre Dame '07 was the first ever full White House.
Michigan ’06 was a student section whiteout, no?
It struck me as an odd question from RUTS since we’ve only had 2 previous whitehouses.

I don't think it was even a partial white out
That didn’t happen for at least a few more seasons if my memory serves me correct.
Nebraska....
wasn’t a whiteout, but was by far the loudest, craziest, most amazing sports experience of my life. I remember shouting at the the top of my lungs and I couldn’t even hear myself. That’s how deafening loud it was. I’m still proud I was there and get goosebumps talking about it.
COLDEST game I remember was I think 2002 vs Iowa. The season LJ & Mills took us to 8-3… That game was unbearably cold, mounted a furious 4th quarter comeback ( i think 22 points down) and people still left rather than staying for overtime. It was an instant classic and people still left it was so damn cold.
I still say
That when Gardner got that interception for a touchdown to ice the game, it is the loudest I have ever heard Beaver Stadium. If anyone else can top this, I will be amazed.
Was anyone at both
Nebraska 02 and OSU 05? I’d love to get a noise level comparison. I wasn’t at Nebraska 02, but I think Calvin Lowry’s interception at OSU 05 was the loudest I’ve ever heard Beaver Stadium.

idk...i'd say tamba up-ending of troy smith might have been louder
can’t remember though…too busy hugging everyone around me
We decide when you hear the snap count...
Nebraska vs OSU - loudest
I wasn’t at the OSU game, but the thing about the Nebraska game was that it was ALL GAME LONG. The crowd never, for one minute, let up. From start to finish we anialated Nebraska. This was after a couple down years, so the crowd was ready for it.
I was at both
And I have Troy Smith at #2. The first drive that Miami had the ball, before the blew us out, may very well be my #3.
First Drive on Miami game?
I remember exactly zero yards in the first half, and I think I’m being generous.
When Miami had the ball on their first drive
It was incredibly loud.
I hit both of these
Nebraska ‘02 was a 3 hour party, Ohio State ’05 as an intense focus. I don’t know if you could say one was louder as a whole, but the Troy Smith hand-stand was the wildest moment of any game I’ve ever been to.
But, it’s all gonna depend on where you where sitting and how much you had to drink.
BSD
I would submit
that it was actually louder after the replay showed that it was a fumble – there was a quick hush as everyone studied the jumbotron – and then mayhem.
both Neb ’02 and tosu ’05 were electric – the buzz of the crowd was amazing.

And what really made it
was the complete lack of marketing and stagedness. Everyone was genuinely excited, no gimmicks, and the games were obviously great.
BSD
we've definitely lost that
especially with how organized paternoville is now.
granted, i’ll give up some of the that organic excitement in exchange for 10-13 wins per year
We decide when you hear the snap count...
Yeah man, I just remember going to paternoville
For OSU in 05 and I think we had 2 tents for like 15 people. All week, there wasn’t much sleep. We were hammered every night, met Mrob and Zemaitis and JoePa, played football untill 3 in the morning, got the sickest I ever got and it was totally worth it.
Also, probably my biggest memory of that week was Saturday at 5 in morning. I was up all night drinking with some buddies and we went to the Cold Pizza/Gameday stage to hang out and get good spots. Up rolls Woody Paige to get ready. He steps out of his car with sunglasses on(at 5am) looks like he is still drunk, and he proclaims to the small crowd, “I think you’ll beat the S**T out of em today!” I shook the mans hand, and he went on his way.
.end ramble on 05 OSU paternoville

I was at both and OSU was definitely louder and, not to sound too much like a girly man, much more emotional. People stood after the game and kept cheering. No one left because we were all just thrilled to be back.
A friend
and one of the most masculine guys I know, literally started bawling after the OSU 2005 win. So no, I don’t think you’re a girly man for using the word “emotional.”
Aaron Harris
There were probably technically louder moments at other games, but I still remember the roar after Aaron Harris blasted through the Ohio State front 7 late in the third quarter for a 51 yard touchdown more than any other. Granted, I was in the student section then and not for the other ones.

Was on the field for both games and Nebraska was the loudest I’ve ever heard a stadium. The weather was much better for Nebraska though, sure it had an impact.

yeah, that game was in September, and I don't recall it being cold
I remember people leaving because of the blowout, and I turned to my roommate and said “What’s the worse that can happen if you stay the rest of the game? We lose, which we were doing anyway. But if you stay, you have the chance to witness a great comeback,” which is what happened, and I recall hearing stories about people trying to get back into the stadium. We should have won that game, too, if the refs didn’t screw us over (that was the game JoePa chased the ref down, isn’t it?)

not completely correct
because we in the “non- student” section were instructed to wear white for the um ‘06 game – it’s just that most didn’t comply/hear/understand.

White outs vs White houses
Just to clarify…
First ever white out: ’04 purdue (my last season in college)
First ever white house: ’07 ND (followed by ’08 Illy)
There’s only one white house a year, and then 2-4 white OUTS a year.
There was DEFINITELY an effort to get a full stadium whiteout for Michigan '06.
May not have been called a white house, but the intent was there….

that's what i was thinking
although technically, wasn’t the first white out in Winnipeg in the late 80’s or something?
We decide when you hear the snap count...
Actually
Actually, there’s never been more than two student white outs in a year, and only in 2008 was there more than two white-anythings. Total history of color-outs at Beaver Stadium:
Purdue ‘04: First student white out
Iowa ’04: Student white out
Northwestern ’04: First “Code Blue” encouraged for all fans (miserable failure, but later adopted by other sports like v-ball and soccer and seems to work pretty well for them)
MSU ’04: Second and last try at Code Blue, still miserable failure
Ohio State ’05: Student white out
Wisconsin ’05: Student white out
Michigan ’06: Student white out – other fans encouraged to wear white but it didn’t really work and wasn’t promoted the same way later official “white houses” would be
Notre Dame ’07: First full white house
Ohio State ’07: Student white out
Oregon State ’08: Student white out
Illinois ’08: White house
Michigan ’08: Student white out
Of those, there’s only been two white houses, and half of them have had good weather. The rest are a mixed bag, but since 05 we’ve only had two white out losses, and both were in good (at least not rainy) weather.

Rain shouldn't be a big problem, wind would be a problem.
No way a non-concussed DC17 goes 9 for 23 at Happy Valley in the rain.
Unless he's being spelled by a starting wide receiver
Instead of the talented second-string quarterback.

In school from 1997 to 2001
The game weather during those years was incomparably nice. Rainy games were extremely rare, and I only recall a few minutes of sleet during the 2001 Ohio State game.
I recall on several occasions experiencing 4-5 consecutive days of rain, only to see the weather break just in time for the alumni to arrive for game day. I blamed Spanier.
The Whiteout last year was awesome
and the sing along made the rain not suck at all.
And honestly
how long did it rain for? Maybe a half hour tops? And it was intermittent, otherwise, it was a great night last year.
Let it snow!
On that note, does anyone have a video of “Let it Snow” during the Michigan State season-closing-Big-Ten-winning game?
I have been looking for that since last fall. Something about the weather, the cold, the football, and Christmas right around the bend made that one of my most enjoyable moments in section NA—and that existence has spanned many, many years.
Might have been the worst game I ever went to
