My fellow Penn State fans
This loss hurts like hell.
It burns. But Iowa was the better team and they deserved this win and their rank now in the Top 25. We were overrated, we all suspected after the 3 creampuffs.
But you know what? We have the rest of the season! Yes, it'll be tough, we got @Illinois, Eastern Illinois, Minnesota, @Michigan, @Northwestern, Ohio State, Indiana, Michigan State. No gimmes but I believe that we can go over .500 over the rest of our schedule. Next game is @Illinois and we have to be ready to play. There are more games and more teams will have losses. We probably won't win the Big Ten but you know, if we can play spoiler, so be it.
I'm down but I'm still bleeding blue and white.

You know.
I’m not hurting as bad as I was when Iowa scored on the blocked punt. That was the moment when I realized it’s not our year to be undefeated.
I just hope the OL finally starts to gel. They were the weak point and Iowa just feasted.

I think we were all a little worried about this from our first game on
But I am still flying my PSU flag for the weekend, because we take the good with the bad.

I really don't think Iowa is the better team,
yeah we lost, but I think we beat them 6 or 7 times out of 10. Tonight was not our night.
I think they were by far the best team.
Atleast thier O-line attempted to block.

I think we can all agree
that the best football team doesn’t win every single game. Iowa state might have beaten us tonight, but that doesn’t change the fact that PSU is the better team. Come the end of the season I still think PSU is higher in the Big 10 standings and national polls.

Really dude?
The best football team always wins the game. Maybe 9 time out of 10 it’s a different outcome (87 Fiesta Bowl). The team that wins is always the better team. From what I saw tonight, we were nowhere near a good football team, and I don’t think even 5 times out of 10 we win the game we played tonight.

That sounds like something TP would say.
Sour grapes.
Iowa won. They were better.

Are you serious?
That was a complete defensive domination that Iowa put on after the 1st quarter. You do realize that Iowa has now won 7 of the last 8 games between the two teams, don’t you? At some point, it stops being a fluke.

We decide when you hear the snap count...
I think
that they will probably beat Illinois on the road, since they aren’t really that good this year. They may lose to Michigan on the road, but they should win most of the rest of their games.
As for tonight’s game, Iowa had a good D, but they were a mediocre team overall. It is just a case of one game in the Big 10 every time that they have a decent to great shot of going undefeated where they don’t show killer instinct, like in 99, 05, and last year. When they went up 10-0, they needed to keep putting it on them. I also thought some of the play calling could have been better, like when Iowa got the safety. I even said before the play that Clark should sneak it, and they mistakenly tried to throw it. I also don’t think that they gave the running game enough of a chance. And, there were some bad calls, like the running into the kicker, and the catch in the 2nd quarter that should have been given to us.
Mediocrity for sure.
I guess you’re right. It’s now been 29 consecutive football quarters since we gave up a rushing TD, we’ve beaten PSU twice in 10 months, we just demolished a touted QB (can he even zip up his pants today without reaching for the band-aids?) for the third game in a row, we’ve won 8 straight, and we put up 21 with two offensive starters out and one limping. Our QB has a career record of 12-3, and our coach let’s an 18 year-old from Sioux City run the ball with the game on the line. Our linebackers catch the ball with their fingers and our DTs have 36 inch waists, while our DE’s run like fullbacks. We totally define mediocrity. We probably suck. The game was so anomalous it can’t even be called a fluke.
I like your wideouts, however.

With all do respect...
you won despite your offense. Yeah, it did a good job running down the clock at the end. The WR’s couldn’t catch and the QB has accuracy issues. Running game looked ok. Yes, Iowa has one a bunch in a row against some good competition, but eventually your offense will cost you a game.

Tonight was a really really shitty day (sorry grandkids)
The weather was shitty.
The tailgating was pretty shitty.
The team played like shit, obviously.
I yelled my throat to shit, which obviously did wonders for the team, but now hurts like hell.
Then after I left after the last INT, I leave, go outside, only to slide down a ten foot mudslide, hurting both my ankles, so I had to limp back all the way to West Halls. On top of that, the slip on the muddy hill also covered me, my white #31 poz jersey, my cell phone, my white PSU hat, a pair of jeans, and a 2008 white out shirt I was wearing under a windbreaker (also covered in mud). Honestly most of this stuff is probably ruined now, which really pisses me off. I don’t know how much of the mud and grass stains are going to come off of a white hat, jersey, shirt, and shoes.
Oh did I mention as of 12:01 tonight, September 27th is my birthday, so I’m having a fan-FRIGGIN-tastic evening tonight.
Now if you’ll excuse me, I have a CATA bus to go jump in front of.

It's OK now
I wrote that last night, and was quite obviously in a bad mood. I’m still disappointed in what happened, but I’m not in the same mood I was when I wrote that. It’s funny I just realized I actually went through all 5 stages of grief last night.
1. Denial- happened in the stands, which was evidenced by the amount of F and S-words I was using at the time. I couldn’t believe it could be happening again.
2. Anger- plenty during the game, plenty more as I took a slide down a muddy hill, as I mentioned previously.
3. Bargaining- I’m not superstitious, but after the game, stupid stuff was racing through my head: I dropped a white pom-pom I had gotten at the pep rally the night before in the Beaver Stadium bathroom before I went to my seat, but didn’t want to pick it up for obvious reasons. Stupidly thinking that something small like that, or wearing the wrong white-out shirt to the game caused the loss.
4. Depression- Actually I’m still going through this one, but last night was even worse. My parents had talked about meeting back at the car to hang out for a bit after the game, but I went back to the dorm. I wanted to be alone. I was also covered in mud, soaking wet, cold, and my legs were killing me from taking a tumble.
At that point I’m kind of in the acceptance phase of taking a loss now. There’s a lot of season left to play, and from what happened this weekend, it seems like every team in the top 25 has as many problems as we do (not that that give us any excuse). But thanks for the wishes and comfort, I appreciate it.
Happy bday. It will all be OK.

Iowa’s front four were dominating, and the coaches didn’t have anything to counter. I would like to have seen a little more Royster on short yardage situations.

Penn State is making one huge mistake on offense, in my view.
This business about doing everything well (I still have no idea what Spread HD means — just no clue) means, when you don’t have a talent gap to exploit, you don’t do anything well. All good teams have an identity on both sides of the ball and a commitment to doing a few things better than any other team. With PSU since this Spread HD stuff started, it’s a little of this, a little of that — and then you’re in a brawl and everything is working at 85% effectiveness.
I just cannot figure out what PSU’s identity on offense is, except that they seem to say, “We’re incredible athletes, so we will virtuoso you do death.” Well, tell that to Klug.
Mr. Boh Knows ...
It's about...
….putting your best players on the field and getting them the ball in space. Obviously you have scene the two games in which it did not work so you wouldn’t understand.
Ask Sparty about the Spread HD and they will have a completely different story.
We have an identity on offense and you are right…it is we have incredible athletes, but it is we will get them the ball in different ways. See Royster, Evan or Williams, Derrick.
WE ARE.......PENN STATE!
This is a very strange post.
You didn’t play “Sparty” last night or Nov. 8 2008.
If I have a team I want to have a core competency that can beat a little team from a state with 2.8 mm people, two D-I programs, and the best D-IAA program in the country this year. But that’s just me.
Anyway, I don’t know what “Spread HD” is, aside from a brand. If it’s my team, I have 5-7 plays that I execute better than anyone on planet earth. I don’t know what those are at PSU. I see a team that executes 30 plays better than 85% of the world.
Now, someone will post “Go away.”
Mr. Boh Knows ...
Go away...
…even though you make a good point. The Lions need to find and identity on offense, and fast.
Just to play Devil's Advocate, what would be Iowa's offensive identity?
Is it “score 13 points and pray?”
"Dr. Samuel Johnson's right about Olson Johnson being right."
It would be run off tackle...
then play action. if you saw last night’s game, you saw the same running play run at least 15 times, hell, maybe more and by both our backs. It was not a secret, it was there. YOU REMEMBER IT…the TE stood up from the line, then went in motion and then BAM. And yet it could not be stopped. And we ran it to the same side over and over again. And so committed to this play are we, that we ran it against your best D-lineman. Execution. Execution. Execution. It was a thing of beauty.
I know many people on this board are blaming your O-line for the game but afte the first quarter you had an 8 minute time of possession lead, and a 10 point scoreboard lead. Then, in the next three quarters we held the ball for 10 minutes more than you, outgained you something like 160 yards to 4 in the second quarter, and was able to run the ball when EVERY person in the stadium knew we were going to run it. I think your D-line was overrun, tired and frustrated. So I would not place all the blame on your O-line at all. In fact, both are good but occasionally - and this seems to be hard to swollow — you face a team whose interior is superior.

don't know why that is lined out...not intentional.
Karl Klug is an animal. Next game we’re going to bring him in a cage. -- Adrian Clayborn
So you're saying that Iowa's offensive identity is basically Tressel-ball.
Don’t get me wrong, I’m not being critical. Playing a field position/ball control offensive scheme is nothing new and tends to be pretty successful. But 13 points on offense is generally not going to be enough to win you most games without your opponent imploding along with it (which is what happened last night).
"Dr. Samuel Johnson's right about Olson Johnson being right."
Yeah, in a crudish sort of way we might be akin to it...
although, we don’t have a spread QB who is unable to read defenses, and we are not conflicted in the least as to whether our QB should be running more (he should not, even though he tucked it last night in a crucial moment and it was huge). OUr QB must manage the offense by reading defenses and then handing off and passing. Tressel balldoes not use pro-sets or anything resembling a pro-style offense that uses the fullback as we do. He is more liminal…not quite a spread and not quite a traditional under center look. But, are we conservative? Yes. Our QB is 12-3 as a starter and has never thrown for over 260 yards. In a perfect game we would have 250 yards passing and 250 yards rushing.

Hey, remember that awesome TD to open the game?
Not only was it totally awesome (and gave us false hope (hey, shut up negative side! you ranted earlier to the television!) …sorry…), but it’s something that could happen on every possession against Illinois, thanks to their stellar defense.
And let’s be fair, not only to Iowa but to Penn State as well. This is a damn good Iowa football team – one that struggled in their opener, but has played amazingly solid football since. I don’t care what they were ranked, or how the public perceived them – just like I’ve never cared when Penn State went into a season/game unranked or ranked lower than they should have. It’s a very solid defense, and enough on offense to not screw up. (As a NY Giants fan, it pains me to say that it’s the same way the Baltimore Ravens won a Super Bowl.)
So we have some things to clean up, work on, and figure out what works best. This is still a team that can win a lot (if not all) of the games left on the schedule. If there’s anything we’ve learned it’s that nothing is a foregone conclusion in this conference. That means these wins won’t be the walkovers we thought a few weeks ago; but we aren’t predestined to doom and gloom because of a sloppy (and, at times, lackluster) performance. All I ask is that you all talk to your physician and ask if Cialis is right for you for the best heart-attack prevention medicine you can find. )And perhaps ask for a pacemaker too. Oh, while you’re there, get one of those cool defibrillator-paddle thingies. Those are cool too!)

Not to be churlish,
but UNI is better than half the teams in the Big Ten, and it’s getting tiresome pointing that out. They have outscored their IAA opponents 131 – 14. They have a better QB than PSU, and maybe, Iowa.
Ah, what am I doing. We’re Iowa, we must have been lucky, this is pointless.

Hmmm...
I missed that part where I said that UNI was horrible. Regardless of who the opponent was, you struggled.
And at what point did I put down Iowa? Did I not say that you were a damn good football team? That this loss is not necessarily because Penn State is so bad, but because Iowa is so good? Where did I say anything about it being lucky that Iowa won?
For once, a Penn State fan tried to compliment you guys. All I tried to do was bring some levity to the fanbase that has more games to look forward to. Yes, it wasn’t trenched in football stats and figures – we have a full week to go through all of that, and people will gladly do that ad infinitum. It was just for fun – hell, I quoted the theme song to “The Facts of Life” at the end. If that wasn’t a dead giveaway, I don’t know what is.

Props Iowa, Bashes to PSU
Iowa deserved the win, no question. Dominated the line of scrimmage, capitalized on turnovers. Game, set, match.
To be honest, I’m pissed at the folks here who predicted an undefeated season during the summer. Great jinx, thanks folks. We needed to see how the o-line would come together before attempting any prognostication. This is what we have: a solid D that’s not making huge plays and on offense that’s average. You can’t judge a team on 10 or 12 returning starters.
Now, let’s see how the team responds to this. If they bounce back, this could still be a good team. You can’t be better than good losing this way.
Agreed
we have a very solid D if Sean Lee and Bowman can play together for the rest of the season. The D will keep us in te games.
However, unless the O-line starts to gel a little…we are a below average Offense. We have capable Wideouts (did Bracket get in the game?), good runners, and an above average (yes not a great) QB. If the O-line gets it on, Clark will be fine but he is not a “gamebreaker”.
Perfection is not attainable, but if we chase perfection we can catch excellence.

Friday was my 40th. The big ugly bday. My wife asked me what I wanted and I said: “a nice dinner with her and the kids, a bottle of wine, then go home, sit on the couch with some Sam Adams Oktoberfest and watch PSU beat Iowa.” Well, the first half of the evening went correctly. And when I woke up this morning, my kids asked if Penn State won, I grumbled no, they reminded me that at least their soccer teams won yesterday, and asked me to pass the syrup.

lol, can I still catch Mike and send my stuff back with him for you to wash?
I might just try to get the bulk of the mud off of my jeans, shoes, and shirts in the shower (it should be a little bit dryer at this point, right now everything is stuffed into two plastic garbage bags) and then I’ll load them in separate washes and hope for the best. I have a whole other load of laundry to do too, so this is going to cost me 10 bucks for the dorm washers (at least the dryers are free).

Yeah, I wanted to keep things pretty quiet for my 22nd birthday (not trying to rub it in, lol). My parents and a few of their friends from college were up for the weekend for the game, and I didn’t even really want do cake that my mom had brought from a place at home (at this point I was starting to get into my usual pre-game panic mode, and was not at all hungry). So today they wanted to know where I wanted to go for my birthday meal (at 1:00 in the afternoon), and we just ended up going to Five Guys for some burgers and fries (and I stole about two pounds worth of peanuts disguised in the greasy bag they put the food in, I’m such a rebel, I know). And given as how I had three exams last week, I’ve got no homework or studying to do this weekend, so I’m just going to try to kick back and relax today, and try to forget yesterday happened, except for cleaning my muddy clothes.
