How much longer for JoePA?
Well...lets get this out of the way now there is no chance for MNC.
We all know that JoePa wanted to hold on for one last national championship, although recent recruiting classes have been strong I don't think anyone beleives Newsome is taking us to the promise land next year.
Therefore, how much longer does Joe stay? Even when he is retired I am sure he will not be "gone" until he passes, so that leave us with the eternal question...who is going to be the next coach of the Lions?
Jay Pa?
TB?
Frentz?
Jersey Greg?
Caldwell?
Golden?

You know...
I’m not trying to be a jerk, but I get tired of these types of threads popping up only after losses.
A loss does not necessitate calls for a new head coach.

Plus, there’s never ever anything new to say. It’s always the same candidates being floated around by a bunch of people that have no information to substantiate any of it. It’s been the same discussion since 2006, basically.
Oh and Joe’s good until at least 2062.

I know its not popular but Joe said before he wants to win 1 more before he retires.
It is not happening this year…this was our best shot because of the schedule. So how long can he hold on?
Be realistic, its a fair question to ask and the reason it pops up now is simple…we are NOT GOING TO WIN this year.
I think Joe can coach until he dies, it really doesn’t matter to me. He gave enough to PSU over the years and earned that right as long as we are winning…I don’t want him pulling a Bowden and leave PSU a mess.

Hold on there
this was our best shot because of the schedule.
I really don’t think that’s true. This year we had a ton of preseason hype for God knows what reason, but most people with their heads on saw significant weaknesses in the O line and secondary. IMO, a better team trumps an easy schedule. With the ridiculous recruits we’ve got coming in, as well as more experience for our young O line, I think 2011-2013 should be some pretty good years. I’m fully expecting us to be a title contender in at least one of those years.
2012...
…best shot.
Newsome is 2nd year starter, , RB depth, WRs will be seniors (at least Moye will be) O-line more experienced, defense loaded, Alabama at home.
WE ARE.......PENN STATE!
Totally agree
Although with the QB talent currently committed to us, I don’t think we can guarantee Newsome is the starter. There’s going to be (hopefully anyway) three very capable QBs in Blue and White come then.
meh
I think it’s a little abrupt to dust off the retirement conversation after just one bad loss. No one realistically thought this would be an undfeated season and Iowa at home hurts but it’s not Appalachian State or Central Michigan. We’ll be fine, and Joe isn’t going anywhere anytime soon.

If he weren't Eighty-something it wouldn't be an issue
No MNC this year, little to no chance of one next year. Really, you think Joe Pa hangs on three more years? Realistically?
When a rain storm makes you gravely concerned for your coach (and if it didn’t, it should have) that’s a problem. I wouldn’t want my Grandfather standing out in that weather for three hours on Saturday night.
Where’s the Beer and the Bar-b-Que?
Nobody thought we had a chance last year either...
Especially with that difficult road schedule. But he was able to keep the team composed and we had the following achievements.
-beat Michigan (I know they weren’t good, but over came the psychological advantage)
-beat OSU at their place
-Dismantled Wisconsin at their place (again, they weren’t good, but they’re tough at home)
If its a MNC you desired, you have to patient because it requires a lot of things to go right, some luck and overcoming ludicrous polls. How did we know that Texas or USC wasn’t better than Oklahoma?

Well the MNC is Joe's standard, not mine.
He’s said he wants to have one more great team. That means undefeated, period. Again, to him, not me.
Like I said above, if he weren’t in 80’s there would be nothing to discuss. We’ve been successful, we’re recruiting well. We’re doing better than 98% of the teams in the country.
You can’t afford to be patient when you’re 82.
Where’s the Beer and the Bar-b-Que?
Good point.
But I don’t think he cares about anything else but coaching and at this point I think he’s the only one who’s going to pull himself out of it.
He’s bringing in some good classes, so I don’t think its unreasonable to think that 2011 couldn’t be a championship sort of year.
I’m not lowering expectations for next year, but I’m not trying to be delusional either.

I just don’t see it happening next year.

My grandma
when in her nineties always wanted to open her birthday or Christmas presents a few weeks early.
The rationalization was that at her age she couldn’t afford to wait.
If he's still got it, even if he's in his 80's, why is this unrealistic?
Yes, we all know 82 is old. But his mind isn’t showing any signs of slowing down. He can still remember games from thirty years ago like they happened yesterday. Yeah, he doesn’t always remember his players’ names, but how many of us could remember 80+ names? Sure, he’s had a few health problems (and again, he’s in his 80s and took a shot to the knee, only to come back, try to show how to kick an onsides kick, messing up his hip), but how many of us, myself included, and I’m 22 now, could recover as well as he did?
So long as he’s healthy, coherent, and actively a part of the team, I don’t care how old he is.
Age is only a number
My father-in-law is an 85 year old, going-strong Italian. He still surfs, skis in the Italian Alps and New Hampshire (talk about crummy weather), and fixes his 3rd floor roof when it’s leaking. Joe is still healthy, really enjoys what he does, and (except for a recent blip in his record) he still does his job very well. Let him coach.

Joe drinks red wine?
I’m choosing to believe its the bourbon, though I’ll have something other than Old Granddad on the rocks.

Pretty sure they'll just taxidermy him.
And just prop him up on a sideline with recordings of his voice blaring over a megaphone.
We are gonna shock them with 5,000 mega watts of raw ROO POWER.
They've already done it with Bowden
why not? He’d still probably be a better coach than half the guys currently coaching.
Honestly
I think Joe looks better this year physcially than he has in a few years. Even some of my non-PSU friends were commenting on it. I don’t think 3-5 more years is really out of the question, but I do think this is a topic to be discussed in the offseason when we have nothing else to talk about.
We are not normal. We are legends.
agreed he looks better physically this year...
…in the same breath, i think the “how much longer for Joe?” discussion is legitimate following a win, loss, any time of year, whatever strictly due to the fact that he is eighty freakin something years old.
JoePa replacement
I think the replacement program is going well so far: the new hip has been a great success.
What part should be next? How about some new eyes?
If not, can’t Sue get Joe to wear a hat?
Then he could have worn his glasses to see what was happening on the field
and to yell at the O-line and some others to get their heads back in the game.
Stop it
if we had won, no one would bring this up

Therefore, how long does he hold on or does he lower that expection internally?

I totally see your point
but am frustrated in advance for the sh!t storm of “when will Joe go” or worse, Joe should go, talk that is bound to start now. I just feel it is premature after one loss.
