Mike Zordich Jr. Charged With DUI

This. This is not good.

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. -- Penn State redshirt freshman middle linebacker Michael Zordich has been charged with driving under the influence of alcohol following an incident at 3:25 a.m. Sunday.

Mr. Zordich, 19, was stopped on Bigler Road after university police noticed him driving without his headlights on.

Penn State Police Deputy Director Tyrone Parham said this morning that Mr. Zordich's blood-alcohol content was 0.19. The limit for a minor is 0.02.

Man he blew that test out of the water. Once again it baffles me why any Penn State student would be caught drinking and driving. Where in the Hell were you that you couldn't walk home?

So it's off to the doghouse for Mr. Zordich. The fact that this happened during a game week has to make Paterno even more furious. This probably has little bearing on the defense since Penn State is plenty loaded at linebacker. But this is a huge blow for Zordich's career. With three cupcakes on the schedule to start the season he was probably going to get a good chance to show the coaches what he can do and give them something to think about next spring when they have to replace Lee, Hull, and probably Bowman. Now this puts him on the bottom of the list as guys like Yancich and Stupar will get to see the field.

Every time we hear more bad news about the LB’s, I just keep thinking Stupar is going to blow up this year. The kid has been amazing on special teams and with injuries and suspensions at the LB position he is looking like he is poised for a breakout season. I can’t wait.

Too bad about Zordich but at 19 what do you expect, everyone makes stupid mistakes at that age.

and if you knew you were drunk

wouldn’t you make sure that you obey all the traffic laws, such as using your headlights at 3:25am. More importantly, it’s State College, ONLY GO TO PARTIES YOU CAN WALK HOME FROM!!!

Good for 'em

At this point, I’m losing any sympathy for these players. Player after player, it’s like they have no memory beyone five minutes.

And I don’t want to hear about “well, it’s not as bad as ’07.” Yes, that may be true, but after ‘07, you would think any of these players, even the ones who came in after that, would see and understand that you will get caught doing even the slightest thing illegal, never mind driving drunk. Someone could’ve been seriously injured or killed.

WAKE UP, MORON! WALK HOME!

I hope Zordich is happy with himself.

This is yet another example of why Sue’s cookies just don’t work the same as they used to in the 80s. Back in 84 Joe would have made Zordich run up Mount Nittany with Dick Anderson on his back first thing Monday morning while Joe and Sue fired up some bacon on the hibachi. Fire JOE NOW!

An oldie but a goodie

My senior year, I (a Philly guy) lived with 3 guys from Pittsburg and 1 from Chicago. It was like they all spoke a foreign language. I felt like a real genius coming up with the Shakespeare line. I also used to bust their chops about sneakers (aka tennis shoes). We’d be heading to the gym to play basketball and one of the roomies said he needed to put on his tennis shoes. Then I’d make some wisecrack about him playing basketball a little better in basketball shoes instead of his tennis shoes.

Ah the good ol’ days of silly fun. I miss those guys. And their pop.

How these kids are even drinking so much during the season. That’s cool you wanna chill and have a couple drinks but 0.19 with a game in a week? I can understand during the summer, the campus is a little thinned out and there’s less to do. But aren’t these kids schedules packed with lifting, class, practices, and meetings? Not sure how you manage all that with the hangover that comes with a 0.19.

Don't some schools prohibit freshman from having cars?

That would seem like a good idea at this point for PSU, I am dismayed that any student in state college is drinking and driving. The punishment needs to become more severe at this point also, and this should be university wide. I would suggest dismissal for the semester and loss of car privilege for the rest of your PSU career.

For football eligibility he’s a redshirt freshman. But as far as PSU is concerned he’s a sophomore.

The entire team needs some counselling if you ask me. Bring in some former athletes like Kerry Collins and have them tell the team how alcohol almost ruined their lives. These kids need to be scared straight before someone gets hurt.

If he gets punished

What kind of message does it send to players?

Bowman can fail a drug test while on probation and just gets a slap on the wrist. But McDonald gets a DUI and gets kicked off the team….Quarless gets a drinking related citation and gets thrown in the dog house. Tony Johnson drives drunk, Joe slaps him on the wrist and only after MADD gets involved does anything really happen.

There is depth chart justice and a lot of “playing favorites” going on at this school. There needs to be a zero tolerance for drunk/alcohol related issues for players on scholarship. When you’re getting free tuition , how hard is it to play by the rules?

This kind of favoritism happens everywhere

regardless of how fair it is. I don’t think it’s justified, just sayin’.

Nevertheless, I agree with Joe’s handling of McDonald vs. Bowman. A DUI is serious business because there’s a very real chance you could injure or kill someone. McDonald was also suspended in 2007 for “undisclosed reasons” so it wasn’t his first offense. As for Bowman failing a drug test, there’s no proof when or how he was using drugs, so for all we know he smoked pot at home and went to bed. There were mitigating circumstances with Bowman as well, in his personal life, which have been well-documented.

For the record, I think Zordich is an idiot for having done this, and I think anyone who gets a DUI should be suspended for several games. Needless to say, he’ll be in Joe’s doghouse for a considerable amount of time.

Here's the other thing

We drink at Penn State. We drink when we come back to Penn State. We drink while we watch Penn State.

A week ago we had three hundred outraged posts about not be allowed to drink out of glass containers in the parking lot.

As we speak there is another post going “What are you looking forward to on Saturday”, drinking, in one form or another, is a pretty common theme throughout.

You don’t get to be the number one party school watching art films and drinking coffee. This is a culture thing, it cuts straight across the entire university.

But I never drove drunk at PSU as a student and when I go back for games or other events I don’t drive if drinking (wives are great to bring along). The amount of drinking is a cultural issue, but if you polled students and alumni I bet very few would agree that drinking and driving is acceptable.

by calling it “climatic variations”? I can remember being in my mom’s van that had a digital thermometer above the rear view mirror. I remember one incredibly cold night in Delaware County (not exactly the Pocono’s) where it actually dipped under 0 degrees, it was the first time in my life I had ever seen a negative temperature.

Anyway, point being, I haven’t had a significant snowfall (for me thats 6-8+ inches), probably since the blizzard in the 93/94 whatever it was. I haven’t even seen an ice storm (one of the ones that leaves all the tree branches and powerlines encased in a layer of ice) for years. Don't fool yourself......

Drinking and driving while intoxicated is a crime that a large percentage of Americans commit every day. Yeah students and alums will tell you it is wrong, most people will,…..but how many people have we all seen leave a game, a party or a bar driving a vehicle hammered. I agree that Zordich F*d up…..actually on several levels. 1) he shouldn’t have been that hammered before a game, wait until Saturday to party 2) he got in a vehicle hammered and drove. Yes he should be punished……probably at least three games……but take a look in the mirror and remember what you did at 19 before you say the kid should be cleaning out his locker. Great Zug…… at least we don’t have players throwing blows for taunting. IF we did there would have been a freakin brawl at the Rose Bowl in January!

I don’t recall being on athletic scholarship at PSU getting a free tuition in exchange for abiding by some rules. Remember what we did at 19? No one here is perfect, but when you’re held to a higher level – you’re held to a higher level…simple as that.

I say this should be the case for EVERYONE on scholarship (Academic or Athletic). Run in with the law =’s you lose your scholarship….

I guess the question you have to ask yourself is what would that accomplish?

Assume first of all that kids are going to get into trouble regardless of the consequences, that some draconian penalty won’t deter these kids because they’re young and foolish.

Next assume that certainly without a scholarship, their are many kids who cannot afford to go to school and must drop out or transfer. Some kids will get loans and stay in school, but let’s be honest, most would just leave the program.

Finally you take into account when they face this consequence. The following season, semester? Before their hearing, before their court date? Does being charged enough?

You’ll lose a lot of talented kids on the team. Recruiting will drop. What you’ll be left with are oustanding student atheletes (which is the intention) and kids who’s parents make enough money to afford to pay their tuition if they screw up. In effect we’d be something akin to an ivy league team, bottom of the barrel with regards to talent, probably in the Big East or MAC, and full of model student athletes. Is that your vision for Penn State football? I’m not saying that’d be the worst thing in the world (I’d take it over being FSU) but it’s certainly a possibility.

That people realize college is a privilege and not a right . If you are lucky enough to be on scholarship, know the rules that go along with it.

Make the University a ton of money. Be realistic…..athletes are held to a higher standard. Their mistakes get put in the newspaper and everyone on this blog bitches about a 19 year old that most have never even met…..that’s in addition to the criminal charge. A normal student simply faces the legal consequences. Zero tolerence for mistakes by college students is a ridiculous standard! AND……We certainly don’t hold our elected officials to such a standard or half of the Congress, Senate and Cabinet would be out of office for tax discrepencies. Be realistic dude…….seriously…….do you want to have a football team at PSU? Just because transgressions are more publicized now does not mean that they have not been happening for YEARS and YEARS!

I thought only safeties played 15 yards off the ball?

When I was at PSU

Wow I feel old posting something like this but anyways. Get caught with a DUI was a big deal but now you just can’t afford it. Everything that happens now with losing your license and all the court costs and so on. I mean oh well his football is going to take a couple of steps back but think about everything else he has to do now. If this was just another college kid and not a football player we wouldn’t hear anything about it. I just don’t understand how you can blame Joe for this. What does he need to do kick every kid off the team when they do something bad?

I can't help but chuckle at one thing

Joe cracked a joke a few weeks ago, something to the effect of dreading it when the phone rings on Sunday morning.

The phone would’ve rung on Sunday morning after this one.

Now

I know this is not a great thread to joke around on…but to me I just picture MZ sr finding out about this and pulling a Mr. Deeds on his son….it is toward the end of the video but it cracks me up every time “NO Daddy NOOOOOOO”

Don't most of these players

Live in Nittany Apartments or whatever its called right by South Halls? It’s really not that far to walk from there to the bars or apartments or whatever. Hell, I remember walking to frats and apartments from East Halls my freshman year, and that is a trek. And for a football player that runs conditioning drills all the time, I would think a little walking really wouldn’t hurt.

and the CATA bus runs in both directions down College/Beaver Ave.

That’s free transportation to about 300 underage drinking parties.

I got an underage freshman year, blowing a .19 also

Happened about noon of a football gameday. I later passed out in the shower for about an hour, woke up, puked in a trash can and passed out in that trash can and woke up around midnight extremely confused because no one was around the dorm hall and not knowing what time it was.

Moral of the story: I am pretty sure I wouldn’t have even recognized what a car was at my .19, let alone been able to drive four feet. Big difference between a .08 DUI and a .19 DUI, imo. I never cease to be amazed at the stupidity of myself, these other kids and people in general. It is what it is and I have got a lot more pressing things to worry about.
