Daryll Clark Named Co-Big Ten Offensive Player of the Week

This just out from Big Ten Tonight and Penn State Sports Information, Penn State quarterback Daryll Clark has been awarded Big Ten Offensive Player of the Week recognition.

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - One of the primary catalysts in Penn State's 31-7 thumping of Akron in Saturday's season opener has been honored by the Big Ten Conference.

Senior quarterback Daryll Clark (Youngstown, Ohio) set career highs with a record-breaking 29 of 40 performance for a career-best 353 yards to earn Big Ten Co-Offensive Player of the Week. He tossed three first half touchdown passes, the second-highest total of his career.

The conference honor is the third for Clark in the 13 regular season games he has started. He shares this week's honor with Purdue running back Ralph Bolden.

Daryll Clark has a message for all of you haters who said the Spread HD was going to go analog without Butler, Williams, and Norwood. Be afraid. Be very afraid.

I know it was Akron

but at least fears about finding receivers to replace The Three, and the new receivers being able to gel with Clark has been allayed for now. They still need a little work, but I thought they did very well for being first time starters on Sat.

I think it’s safe to say, at least for now, that no three WRs will mean more to PSU football than the legends that just left. That being said, what I saw from Moye, Powell, and Zug was enough to ease my mind. With a few more Akrons, we’ll be just fine in that respect.

Maybe it's Clark

Paraphrasing the Fabulous Furry Freak Brothers:

A Good Quarterback will get you through times of no wideouts better than good wideouts will get you through times of No Quarterback. ( Old guys, help the young guys.)

But it was still Akron.

Stewart Mandel agrees...
That thing I said last week about Penn State being overrated? Forget it. Never happened. The Nittany Lions outgained Akron 344 to 8 in the first half of a 31-7 win (all 31 points came in that half), and it seems Daryll Clark and his new receivers are getting along just fine.

Seeing what we saw from the rest of the Big Ten this week

It’s hard to think 12-0 is out of the question.

Yeah

Unfortunately as the likelyhood of us increases our national title hopes decrease because the big ten is looking worse by the minute. Unless USC stinks up the place in Columbus this weekend of course.

I'm really hoping for this scenario, as much as it pains me to root for any of them

but if ever there were two games where a freak dual meteor strike would be the greatest outcome, it’s those two games.

But as much as it pains me, two big ten wins next week in these two would be a great boost for us when we beat both of them. Plus I want the Buckeyes as highly ranked as they can get when they make the trip into the “country”.

And an Irish loss would be nice, since they’re getting so much fellating already when they’ve only beaten Nevada, and it’s driving me Zugging crazy.

UM vs. ND

That will be one of those games where I just pull for whoever is on defense.

It's one week out of a long season

But yeah. Hard to not be encouraged.

Who were the three teams everyone said stood the best chance to beat us?

Ohio State – Barely beat Navy
Iowa – Needed two blocked FG to hang on against Northern Iowa
Illinois – Looked absolutely horrible against Missouri

Right now it looks like our toughest games will be Northwestern and Michigan.

If I'm re-evaluating things...

1. Michigan State
2. Ohio State
3. Michigan
4. Northwestern

You know OSU is going to be another one of those 17-10, 14-13 type games.

I like this list

And order.

Was with Mike at beginning on Northwestern. And have all along poo-poohed the Illnois scares. And have quietly feared the return of menace in ann arbor. If MSU’s got their qb sitch figured out already….we’ll see how they do against notre dame.

Does Clark...

get more Heisman hype with Bradford out of the race for a while?

If he keeps...

Getting 40 attempts against the likes of Akron? Sure.

Nice win gents (and ladies), it’s always nice when you’re team comes out and takes care of business. Just remember it’s a looooooooong season and you can only take em one at a time. Can’t wait for next Saturday!

Yeah?

Did you learn enough about your squad to feel comfortable next week vs. the Irish? (not taunting, just a legitimate neutral question, having not seen either teams play).

I loved the look on Tressel's face

When Pryor pleaded to go for it on 4th down and then they failed. Ha

Very next play...

After that 4th down was the long Navy TD right? Priceless.

Such a stupid play. Kick the relatively easy FG and go up 3 scores. There are times when going for it on 4th down is justified; this wasn’t one of them IMHO.

Great stats but...

Don’t get me wrong with this post. Darryl Clarke had good numbers and threw some really nice passes. OverallI thought we had good QB play but it looked to me like Darryl Clarke made a bunch very questionable decisions. My concern is that this was against a mediocre to bad defensive team. When we play the better teams in the Big Ten who know our tendencies better I think we could be in a little more trouble. In many instances it looked like he locked in on receivers and just went to them regardless of the coverage instead of checking down his list. It is not like he was under heavy pressure most of the day. Sometimes the results were good, actually very good, but sometimes I just shook my head. I saw what should have been an interception when he threw to a receiver with three defenders around him. A couple others were thrown into heavy coverage and could have easily been picked off. The one TD to Moye was a spectacular catch and a good throw I am just not so sure it was the safest decision. Moye has a huge height advantage so that may have been the thought from the start which I think was worth the risk in that case and obviously the result was great so it is difficult to question. But the defender actually had pretty good coverage on Moye. Also the one interception he did throw should have been a catch by Powell (who played great), on like the 5. It looked to me like Akron said “you are not going to run on us” right from the start. We did not even have to establish the run to get them off balance, they just gave it to us. We could pass all day on them. So I kind of give the running backs a pass but think that we should have had a better day passing the ball. Particularly in the second half. Some of that was play calling also.
So, to sum up…I thought Clarke played well but I would like to see him running through his options better.
