Stewart Mandel

Stewart Mandel just had a Road to Damascus moment. He now picks Penn State to return to the Rose Bowl with Ohio State not even qualifying for any BCS bowl. This is great news. Stewart Mandel knows his stuff, as he has devoted his entire being to college football and has never, ever touched a girl.

"That thing I said last week about Penn State being overrated? Forget it. Never happened. The Nittany Lions outgained Akron 344 to 8 in the first half of a 31-7 win (all 31 points came in that half), and it seems Daryll Clark and his new receivers are getting along just fine."

True, but....

He also said this:

• While we’re at it, to anyone in St. Louis who listened to a radio interview I did there last week in which I proclaimed Illinois a potential national sleeper … I misplaced my phone that day. Really. Wasn’t me who answered.

I can’t believe there was anyone stupid enough to think Illinois as a “potential national sleeper”.

DO YOU HAVE PRIDE, DANNY?

So, if PSU gets derailed anywhere...

Howie…eh, Stewart will disclaim that he ever said that he was pick’in us to go “all the way”.

I’m beginning to dislike his style.

Yeah, I dropped reading him 2 years ago

Am still curious who he’s pimping as his ‘crush’ these days, tho. Welcome a picture posting so we can pass proper judgment…..

"For me the game wasn’t grounded in reality. It was about the uniform you put on that turned you into a warrior. It was about the mythology of the battle, the victory, the defeat, the struggle." - Mike Reid, PSU '69

He also said

the ACC was poised for a return to prominence, and his Sugar Bowl selection Rutgers was just dominated at home on Cincy’s 1st possession

Big East

You can’t hold his Rutgers pick against him. RU seemed in the off-season to be an improved team in a weak conference. The best pre-season pick anyone could really make would be to throw a dart at a dartboard.

True.

All Big East teams suck, therefore any of them could be a BCS team. Remember when Pitt played in the Fiesta Bowl despite having, what, four or five losses that year?

Stewey

I read Stewey all the time—mainly for his humorous take on the rest of CFB outside PSU. For YEARS he has been unimpressed with PSU and rarely, if ever (besides about a two month period in 2005), have I seen him say positive things about PSU. This is quite a change—I hope he keeps it up!

Mandel...

He doesn’t take things too seriously and injects some much needed sarcasm into the overall conversation. I think he treats PSU fairly for the most part. His book was also an enjoyable read.
