Time For Joe Paterno To Land The Big Prize
With the football season complete and the basketball season rapidly circling the drain, it's a good time to shift into what BHGP calls "caring is creepy" mode and look at Penn State's remaining football recruiting targets. Well, target. The class is pretty much set with the exceptions of a few lesser-known players and one huge name -- South Carolina running back Marcus Lattimore. Joe Paterno seems poised to make his first in-home visit since wooing the parents of a young John Coleman Hufnagel in 1968 with his first-hand accounts of the Barbary Wars.

Remind yourselves to never write like that:
Four years ago, Joe Paterno was on a diet. Bacon was forbidden.
But now, he can eat bacon. And he’s poised to eat bacon.
The time couldn’t be better.
Time to get the bacon.

I want a job where I get paid by the column-inch.
Then I can just spread out my thoughts.
Like so.
I wouldn’t produce much, but what the hell.
As long as it fills out the page, who cares?

But it really is down to the last 2-4 guys. Unless someone else, say a Maryland wide receiver, pulls an Easley.

Michael Thornton? What?
For conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity at the risk of his life above and beyond the call of duty while participating in a daring operation against enemy forces in the Republic of Vietnam on October 31, 1972. Petty Officer Thornton, an assistant United States Navy advisor, along with a United States Navy lieutenant serving as senior advisor, accompanied a three-man Vietnamese patrol on an intelligence gathering and prisoner capture operation against an enemy-occupied naval river base. Launched from a Vietnamese Navy junk in a rubber boat, the patrol reached land and was continuing on foot toward its objective when it suddenly came under heavy fire from a numerically superior force. The patrol called in naval gunfire support and then engaged the enemy in a fierce firefight, accounting for many enemy casualties before moving back to the waterline to prevent encirclement. Upon learning that the senior advisor had been hit by enemy fire and was believed to be dead, Petty Officer Thornton returned through a hail of fire to the lieutenant’s last position, quickly disposed of two enemy soldiers about to overrun the position, and succeeded in removing the seriously wounded and unconscious senior naval advisor to the water’s edge. He then inflated the lieutenant’s life jacket and towed him seaward for approximately two hours until picked up by support craft. By his extraordinary courage and perseverance, Petty Officer Thornton was directly responsible for saving the life of his superior officer and enabling the safe extraction of all patrol members, thereby upholding the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
I guess I should pay more attention to recruiting.

It's a shame too
B/c he was one of our first big offensive recruits, and later received his 5 star status months after being committed at Penn State.
Unfortunately it seems that this whole thing took a bad turn when someone on the coaching staff (McQuery?) actively pushed this guy away from Penn State. I’m not sure how that all turned out, or if it has anything to do with this decision, but you can’t help but wonder why that all went down.

Eh, if that's true I'm guessing there was a reason for it.
Hard for me to get too excited about a Coxson going somewhere else. We are fully capable of a Top-10 season or 3 without any 5* wideouts. I’m assuming (without any knowledge of anything to assist me) that Coxson is being pushed away because of character and if that’s the case, I’ll take a #9 ranking with quality kids instead of having my team be full of the whiny brats winning it all.

exactly
I’d love to have Easley, Floyd, and the like come to Penn State — IF they’re high character kids with a committment to the team. If they’re Prima Donas, knuckleheads, or afraid of being held accountable for their actions, then I’m glad they’re heading somewhere else.

I'll be honest...
I watched the whole O-D bowl for Coxson, I only saw one catch, and it was an easy one. He gave up on a bunch of passes that went his way. Having seen him, he strikes me as a prima donna, despite that awesome commit video he put out about making his mama proud and winning a NC at Penn State.

Recruiting and especially Recruitniks are way overrated!
Royster is about to become PSU’s #1 running back of all time and I don’t think he was a 4=star whoopdeedoo. Bogus hype over running backs and the latest stud of the day are for fools. What’s the percent that actually turn into something as big as their hype?

Agree in principle.
But logically, the higher the ranking means the higher the chance of success with that kid. I know Royster and DC17 were not highly ranked and turned out to be awesome, while some 5* kids turn out to be huge busts. But I have to imagine those are the exceptions, not the rules. I’m not big on star rankings either, but they are a good/rough estimate of how a good will be. However, that’s only half the battle. How the kid is coached is more important, which brings us back to WHY Royster and DC17 were great.

I see what you're sayin
I mean recruiting rankings are no exact science, but check out the Rivals top 100 from 2005 or 2006 and see how many of those guys are in the NFL right now. You might be impressed.
by jimbo2psu on Jan 11, 2010 12:48 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
in general...
a highly ranked class pans out in terms of wins. Look at the 2006 class….I believe that class was a big part of the success on the field in ’06 and ’09.
Keep in mind also that a lot of big time guys (like chris baker, phil taylor, chris bell, mo evans) didn’t contribute much to those seasons (if at all) although they brought major star power with them.
by Artiefufkin10 on Jan 11, 2010 1:04 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
I think one of the bigger flaws
Isn’t necessarily the star rankings themselves, but who these guys look at. It is always going to be tough to gauge how a kid will succeed at the next level. The rankings are more about who has the better physical tools, and doesn’t take into account mental things, coaching staff ability, injuries and other miscellaneous stuff.
The bigger problem for me is that they can’t evaluate every single kid. Certain areas, especially in the south, Texas, Western PA, etc will always have more analysis because the HS football is bigger there. Since we recruit heavily in the northeast, a lot of our guys won’t get the same attention and their talents are often overlooked as they do not play in hotbeds. Some kid out of Lancaster County may be physichally gifted enough, but wasn’t playing on a big stage and thus didn’t receive his dues.

Bullseye.
Especially with that first paragraph. A kid can have amazing physical attributes (see Pryor, Terell), but if he is coached poorly, or has a sh***y attitude, they aren’t going to pan out. Pryor has been OK thus far (1-1 in BCS bowls and vs. PSU), but many believe he could have done a lot better at either a different school (with a lack of sweater vests) or at a different position.

The stars measure interest, not talent
the talent evaluators at the schools do the real work.
However, there’s definite coorelation between recruiting classes and success on the field. The star system actually works, just not all the time :-)

Royster was no slouch.....
Three to four star recruit depending upon the recruiting service and he was a hellified athlete (you don’t get a ship offer from Johns Hopkins in Lacrosse if your not). B. Carter was a four star RB recruit that year too so we had a good running back class. PSU always gets good backs no matter what people say. Redd looks like the real deal so whether we get Lattimore or not we are in good shape. That said would love to have Mr. Lattimore be the next great Penn Stater from the Palmetto State!

I would be disappointed at not getting the last guy (Lattimore), but the kid (again from what I’ve heard/read) really has his head on straight, so he’ll be ok anywhere.

Which is why I have to believe he realizes he's not a lock to start anywhere on his list
And the thing he said about, “What if I get injured and that takes football away. I need to have something to fall back on.” That, if true (it wasn’t for that LB that committed to UF on signing day last year), then he will pick us – Auburn, USC and Oregon are on a different, and lower, plain than PSU when it comes to education.
Thornton – I don’t think anybody has a clue what’s up with him.

Super secret decoder ring
Easley — Tried to commit to FL once, they didn’t want him at that point but offered later and he jumped at it. Whatever. Kid got what he wanted.
Floyd — Created a giant charade about academics being most important to him, told everyone that a guidance counselor was handling his recruiting, then suddenly decided he wanted Florida or Ohio State. OSU folks are mighty pissed about his selection. But again, you can’t make a kid like Penn State — it’s not for everyone.
Lattimore — I’d be mildly surprised if he went anywhere other than PSU. Lots of people around the program thought he could’ve started next year at PSU (prior to Royster’s announcement).

I found myself in McElwain a lot
Not for anything dubious. But it’s kind of awkward wandering around and all-girls dorm looking for a bathroom at 2 in the morning lol.

I lived in McElwain last year (it's first year as a co-ed dorm)
We had Powerpuff girls painted on our walls, no joke.

Desire
While stars give an indication of athletic capability, I think it is desire to play for a system that is important. If a kid really wants to play at Penn State, use Hull as an example, then there is a greater chance of success. The job market is no different – you hire somebody who has a lot of talent, but doesn’t want to be there, then he is going to suck. So while we need to reach out to these kids, I don’t think you can bend over backward to make them come. Concentrate on making your system the best it can be, which we have a great system, and find kids that want what we have to offer. If you have to be kissing thier backsides now, it won’t be any different once they are here.

Recruits
Okay, outside of Lattimore and Thornton (and, of the two, Thornton is the one I really want because he fills a greater need) is there anyone else of note that we might be pulling in late? I’m guessing maybe Shyquawn Pullium if we actually offer him (have we done that?) but I haven’t heard of any other names.

According to Rivals Pullium is set to visit on the 15th.
They also list us as his top prospect, with an offer from McQueary.

Ironically visiting with Coxson (and DaQuan Jones), if he makes the trip.
But yes, it’s pretty much those three left, from what I hear. Don’t know how the numbers stack up (whether we can take all three), but that’s all that’s left on the radar. Now it’s just a matter of holding on to what’s there.

DaQuan is locked down already.
Pullium will be giving us a siren by Wednesday next week, I would guess (personally, I think he’s a silent commit already).

DaQuan is a lock, but he's still visitng.
And will hopefully be whispering sweet nothings into Pulliams ear so we can get that siren.

This.
No worries, Junny. Pullium is a better lock than the one on my door.

Yea, I agree.
I just don’t know why he’s waited this long. By all accounts, he would’ve committed to us 18 years ago. Maybe we were just waiting to see how many openings there were. However, I did read that this kid has phenomenal speed.

Weird that Coxson is visiting again...
if all the rumors are true. Could this play out like Costanza at Play Now?
George is hired to fill a quota. When Play Now finds out he isn’t who he projected. Play Now tries to get rid of George by numerous means. George finds ways to continue showing up for work and a war ensues.
Coxson is recruited to fill a need. PSU finds out that he isn’t quite the guy they thought he was. McQuery goes out of his way to push him out, but Coxson keeps coming back (another visit). Hopefully the last parallel isn’t drawn.
Maybe Coxson and his friends will drop a big ball of oil off the roof of the Lasch building and put an end to this drama.

Maybe he’s referencing Joe visiting Lattimore and the weather affecting that visit? Just a guess.

Lattimore, Thornton, Pullium
Lattimore is supposedly down to Oregon and PSU…I read this yesterday on the ever so reliable internet (sarcasm), but cannot remember where I had seen it, or I would cite the source (my apologies). I’ve been following recruiting for a long time, and not that that makes me an expert or anything, but this scenario with Lattimore has played out before. Royster sticking around will cost us this kid…but you never know…stranger things have happened on signing day. I surely hope I am wrong and we get this kid. He’s a good kid and could be a huge asset for this program.
Thornton will be at Penn State and so will Pullium (which everyone knows anyhow).
Coxson is not exactly an exemplary citizen…and it played a big part in him not being a Nittany Lion.

Is Baublitz coming in as a TE?
I thought he was switching to DE…not that I think he should, since TE seems like a bigger need for us. Plus, from what I’ve seen of him, TE would seem to be a better fit.

I believe Rivals listed him as a 4* TE
and Scout was a 3/4* DE. So who knows, if he’s versatile its a good thing.
