Sunday Bloody Sunday Open Thread: Penn State at #10 Purdue

Penn St. Nittany Lions at Purdue Boilermakers, Jan 31, 2010 3:00 PM EST

Ahh, Sunday.  God's day.  A day of reflection, praise, hope, and getting crushed by 25 points at Purdue (17-3, 5-3).  Penn State's history in West Lafayette is, how you say, butt-ass awful.  Last year, the Lions lost, 61-47.  In 2008, 67-53.  Purdue looked vulnerable for a brief, three-game stretch earlier this month in losses to Wisconsin, Ohio State, and Northwestern.  Since then, the Boilermakers have rebounded with wins against Illinois, Michigan, and Wisconsin.

As for Penn State (8-12, 0-8), they've squandered their most reasonable shots at winning a conference game, and now face today's road effort at Purdue, a Wednesday night game at Ohio State, and home dates with Minnesota and Michigan State.  There's a light at the end of the tunnel, my friends, and that light is the conclusion of the Big Ten tournament's first round.

The game will be broadcast on the Big Ten Network at 3:00 p.m.  Our Nittykitties are fifteen point underdogs.  If you're curious as to what a successful Penn State basketball team looks like, there's always the replay of PSU's second round NCAA tournament victory over North Carolina -- seriously, that happened! -- 8 p.m. Monday night on the BTN.

Battle music, yes.

Last week vs Wisconsin

I had a feeling that PSU would play well and I felt they would have a good chance to win. I do not feel that way today. I hope I’m wrong but I think this could get ugly.

Watching Georgetown the other day

it seems that every player felt comfortable handling the ball, and wanted to get the ball.

It’s the complete opposite with us. I never seen basketball players look so tentative.

It's part of a bigger picture with us

Sounds like a douchey, sportscaster thing to say, but honestly, what is PSU’s identity? They aren’t sharpshooters, they aren’t physical, they don’t hustle, they don’t run some sort of sophisticated offense or defense. They play like a lazy, supertalented team that isn’t actually talented at all.

I’m impressed with Edwards. He’s playing pretty well. He has to get more crisp in his passing though. I suspect he’s the kind of kid that wasn’t asked to pass much in high school.

Both teams playing tough defense. Our sloppy screens are making things pretty difficult. We’re really having to work for our shots.

2nd Media timeout

They’re holding their own. Seems like Purdue has more weapons to work with. Their defense is giving us fits, but Battle and Babb seem to be getting a good two-man game going that got Battle an open look.

We’ve been blocked from behind on easy layups three times. Jones has to dunk that home.

True

And the only other small criticism I would add is that he seems to always want to pump fake and drive, even if he has a wide open shot. I’d like to see him get some more confidence with the outside shot, plus that would then make his pump fake that much more effective. He is good at creating his own shot via the drive though.

What percentage chance to you think Battle will “test the waters” for the NBA draft? psu was simply overmatched in this game

they stuck around in the first half – mainly due to some poor 3 point and FT shooting – and only trailed by 2. Purdue started the 2nd half on a 19-4 run by the first TV timeout of the 2nd half, which ended it right there. They had a few chances to cut it to single digits but TO’s quickly ended things. THey were lucky to be around as long as they were. But i don’t think it was necessarily an “effort” problem – Purdue is signficantly better.

by mundyscorner99 on Jan 31, 2010 6:31 PM EST up reply actions

You

asked earlier what do we have to do in the 2nd half to get a W…..simple ! as soon as PSU gets a lead (highly improbable), they win the game….otherwise, it ain’t gonna happen….this season is toast…ALL IS LOST and like I’ve said before, drugs are available(legal of course).

by DerryPharmer on Jan 31, 2010 6:49 PM EST up reply actions

True, but they've had plenty of leads in the 2nd half this year

They weren’t able to close the deal on them when they did. I’m surprised the effort has still been there considering the record – we could start to see a string of blowouts based on the better competition in the next few weeks. They still haven’t even played MSU yet.
