Pessimism: why be disappointed later when you can be miserable now?
Back in the pre-season, when lots of BSD posters were predicting one or two loss seasons, I was not buying into the irrational hype. We had a young team with no entrenched QB. The defensive front 7 lost a ton of high-level talent. And the OL also was its usual question mark self.
Here's what I said initially last November:
5 or 6 losses seems likely. There will be 2 or 3 guaranteed losses, plus a handful of games that will look like pick-up street games. That’s another 2 or 3 games right there.
Later, in May, I became more optimistic and said 3-5 losses:
I’m feeling like this year will have a few really bad losses, like 35-7 type games, as the offense struggles. Bama, OSU and Iowa appear to be pretty likely losses, and I could see a WTF game or two in there as well. Get in the 3-4 conference loss range and it’s middle of the pack.
I hope I’m wrong, though.
The question is, why are folks acting like we didn't see this coming? We got younger while most Big Ten teams are on an upward trajectory. Our schedule also got much tougher.
Yeah, I'm pissed the OL can't compete. The defense is not up to its recent standard. But there was no reason to think--other than homer blue kool aid drinking--that this would be a Top 25 team. Let's just hope the Illinois game is our only WTF loss. Illinois is a good team, but we shouldn't get rolled at home like that to anyone outside the Top 10.

This is why people are acting like they didn't see it coming:
we shouldn’t get rolled at home like that to anyone outside the Top 10.

On a single game level, yes
it’s hard to contemplate, even for a pessimist like myself, losing like that to Illinois. But over a full season, that’s the hallmark of a young team. Some games the team will look like utter garbage.
The individual result is surprising, but in the big picture we should know there will be days like this.
I concur.
If we get killed by Minny and Michigan, yes, this is a terrible team. But for now, the Illinois game might just be a bad game.

Until this week I still had a lot of hope for Michigan.
But now I really can’t see the D stopping them. Oh sure…Michigan’s D is terrible too, but PSU’s offense right now is so bad I can’t really see them scoring enough to keep up.
Good point...
It does seem at this juncture that the Michigan game will turn singularly on just what kind of offense we get.

I'm also a bit worried about Michigan
But if we get a lead and make them HAVE to throw it, we’ll pwn them. Denard is a fantastic athlete, but a quarterback, he is not.
True, just like Pat White was.
And Pat White beat a lot of teams being a fantastic athlete playing qb.
Because most people are fans first,
and rational human beings second. We wanted the best for our team. It just doesn’t seem to be working out now,.
