While you still can, go to as many PSU road games as you can
After adding my list to What Stadiums Have You Seen CFB In? I feel compelled to make a suggestion to all of you out there who don't have mortgages or children or both -- go to as many Penn State road games as you can. Now that I have a son in daycare, I never realized just how much money I used to have. The money we spend for daycare every month could have been a very sweet trip to Chicago or Madison. I hear Minneapolis is a good destination as well. In retrospect, I could have stayed with a friend in suburban Detroit for UM and MSU trips too.
I am not complaining, just pointing out that as priorities change, I'm wishing I had dropped a few hundred bucks and made some trips to the places I mentioned above. Not Indiana though, I don't care how cheap the airfare/hotels are, it's Indiana. I did make it to Boston College which was great except for the game, but mainly because I was going to be in New England the week before, otherwise I doubt I would have done it.
This goes for home games too, but chances are if you are going to home games now, you probably still can once your little one arrives, especially if you have parents/in-laws nearby.

I'm planning on going to
Madison, Champaign, and Chicago this coming year for those away games. I’ll probably still be working up here by then, and all of those places are do-able in terms of weekend driving trips from up here (all 6 hours or less).
Sounds like a plan!
Both Madison and Chitown seem like awesome candidates next year’s away game.
Tuscaloosa this year was the shizzit.
The Indiana Hoosiers: a poor (and less arrogant) man's Michigan
did Chicago last year for Halloween NW game
I’m almost hesitant to go next year, because it will not be topped
and the Chicago chapter put on a nice tailgate
Absolutely Madison and Chicago
If anything, the ILL game is probably the least likely of the three.
Madison is a HUGE definite yes, no way I’m not going to a game there while I’m so close. We’ll have to meet up for a beer or something pre-game.
definitely

Skins have a sick ticket offer coming out on Monday
Buy a Club Seat for the Penn State game, get a free Deck ticket to any remainnig Redskins game (Eagles, Cowboys, Giants, etc) Deck ticket is normally $125 on its own.

I'm embarrassed
to say that I’ve only been to Ann Arbor. I need to step my game up

Don't feel bad
I’ve been to Ann Arbor and the Link and that’s it. It’s tough as a PSU fan when the closest conference road game is a six hour drive away.
I was at least year's game in Ann Arbor
I went with my best friend (a Michigan grad student), but in the 3rd quarter I was jumped in the stands by some 40-year old guy trying to take away my white shaker. But still, it was a great experience overall (every fan base has its drunken idiots, including PSU). The night before the game at Conor O’Neill’s, I got a “WE ARE…” chant going — it sounded like 2/3 of the pub was PSU fans! Ann Arbor’s actually quite a fun town.

I can second that
I had a great time in Ann Arbor. By the middle of the 3rd and entire 4th, it was mostly PSU fans. Great, great experience.

Daycare...ugh
I’m with ya on that one, man. We just got one kid out of daycare and it’s like getting a $7000 a year raise AFTER TAXES.
I still have two years to go to get the little guy out of daycare. I don’t know what we’ll do with all of the extra income after that.
Once a family gets to the point they have two or three kids it’s not worth it for the wife to work anymore. Half or more of her income just goes to the daycare center.
No doubt
Learning we were having two made it a no decision. That, and wifey’s latest career industry: catering event & food design. Wicked, weird hours on her feet. Unfortunately, she balked at my overtures to get her wedding planning business started up while pregnant, so how to get her to closer to that new income now that she’s got her hands full with two infants? May have to wait til Kindergarten.
Local-ish Grandmothers are also vital to keep the away game travel coming. It takes a village.

Try being 12 hours away from the grands...
It makes it tough…I could have that nice new purple challenger rts if I didn’t have a kid in daycare…oh well….
When in doubt, punt!

Mr. Easy!
Just googled purple challenger rts. I can totally see you in that bad boy.
How’s your coaching season going? We miss your contributions up here!

currently sitting at 4-4
with two cupcakes left and a second place finish in region ours if we win…that means a home playoff game…
Been a good season, and my new power I pistol offense has had a pretty good run.

We have 3 sets of Grandparents all within 15 minutes
It’s a curse and a blessing. If we want to go out or do something, like a game, Bingo. It’s awesome. But try eeking out a weekend with just the immediate family. Never happens. Everyone wants a piece of that baby’s ass! Every weekend we’re doing dinner or lunch of something just as an excuse for the grandparents to get some face time with the rugrat. And if you don’t agree to anything, they always find an excuse to drop by. “We got some mail for you at the house, it looks important.” etc.
McGloin Despite Them

Yup
And honestly why work 20-30 hours a week just to have someone else watch the kids? I never would have thought I’d have a family where I worked and my wife stayed at home with the kids, I thought I was much too modern for that, but once you look at the numbers it’s a no brainer. So that’s where we’re headed after this year. And truthfully, I’m looking forward to it.

The sacrifice is worth it
My wife stayed home while all 4 of ours were little (the youngest are 7), and only now is working occassionally. You may never believe me, but you really can learn to get by w/o cable, cellphones, a fancy car, A/C, Dunkin Donuts, etc. It’s actually a very free and simple lifestyle. Stuff is waaay over-rated.
"God is great, beer is good, and people are crazy"
did you do this?
if so, my hero! My brother-in-law is a stay at home dad. Which was real funny when they lived in Vienna (Austria). The german word for house wife is haus frau. For the husband, it’s Haus Mann.
The Indiana Hoosiers: a poor (and less arrogant) man's Michigan
Amen
I told my wife if she could get a job making enough money I’d quit and stay home. Then I could blog all day long when me and the boys weren’t out on the golf course.
I'm sure psuwifey was all over that one
I did the househusband thing for about a year. The problem is that the damn kids are as needy as my clients and almost as whiney. Not to mention my wife actually expected me to clean the house. Getting back to work was a major relief.

Bling!
He may need it to host all of us traveling to the Texas Bowl.
The Indiana Hoosiers: a poor (and less arrogant) man's Michigan
Absolutely
I’m kinda secretly hoping PSU finishes around 6-6 or 7-5 and goes to the Texas Bowl. I can see the stadium right now from my office window. We’ll have a big ol’ BSD tailgate party if that happens.
Like it's 1999
Cuz, you know, to Texas, for a bowl game, after a disappointing season.
Maybe jesse. and jessedotsmom can give us some adult Princely recipes for the Grotto ’Gate.

Yep...spend 25K per year in daycare...suck but I rather pay than stay at home dad...that is a tough gig
Hire Mike Pettine Jr!!!!!!!!
/contemplates this
….I wonder what my price would be? Net, that is. Obviously, the important bit is how much is still coming in…..dunno….

Have you factored in
all the hot moms at the park?
Oh, we got both kinds. We got country AND western
The problem is most of the hot moms are tight with my wife
I had to hit up the parks in other parts of town.

That's even better
Longer drive means the kids fall asleep in the car on the way home means a little more free time for you.

Been to:

You need to treck it to Athens
I so wish PSU or any Big 10 opponent for that matter would do a home and away with UGA. Great game day atmosphere….especially this time of year.
I thought only safeties played 15 yards off the ball?
Buck up young William. They grow up fast and PSU football's not going anywhere.
Except for maybe that Paterno guy.
I'm fine
…but I would have traveled more before hand and I wanted to give some perspective to those who have not yet gone down the path.
I’ll probably start getting back to a home game or two next year, plus all the I-95 corridor games which are very convenient, thanks Tim Curly!
In 4 or 5 years, my son should be old enough to go to his first game. That is going to be fantastic.
Blogging about D.C. Baseball since April '04. Penn State alum, so I blog about it too. Also partial to the Washington Capitals and the rest of the D.C. teams, plus the New York Yankees and Yale football.
I couldn't agree more....
I love everything about seeing Penn State on the road. Seeing all of the traditions and passions of other schools is what makes college football great. The must sees, in my opinion are:
1. Notre Dame. Even though I hate ND, the is something special about that place.
2. Memorial Stadium, Nebraska. The people are so nice it is almost crazy. We were treated like gods.
3. Michigan Stadium. It is the Big House.
4. Ohio Stadium. Great passion…..more bad apples than most.
5. Rose Bowl.
List is Small (and in no order)
1. Bryant Denney was a blast this year despite the game, great fans.
2. Old Meadowlands, I liked that place for a reason I cannot place
3. 2005 Orange Bowl, must stressful game I ever attended.
4. Notre Dame, loved how the stadium is in the heart of the campus, nice fans, so glad I went despite the outcome (QB14 option ftw)
5. The Linc, an okay stadium I think, nothing special about it.
Soon to be added in the next year: Camp Randall (soooo pumped) and FedEx Field (eh)
I thought ND was a hell hole
Yes the campus was nice but the stadium was horrible……worse than Ann Arbor…..and that is BAD!
I thought only safeties played 15 yards off the ball?
agree on ND
similar to my feelings on the Rose Bowl, the stadium just had a run down feel to it.

Agree on the Rose Bowl, help may be on the way
LA Times article on renovations
Though I’m afraid $152 million may not be enough. It’s not bad once you’re in your seat but the exterior areas like gates, restrooms, concession area and tunnels need a major overhaul.
by Frank O'Brien on Oct 22, 2010 5:44 PM EDT up reply actions
ND stadium was a dump
when I went there ~ 1990. Don’t know what it’s like since renovations.
Joe Paterno Apologist
I'll agree
Inside was nothing special, but the location, history, and it does look nice from the outside made it a cool place for me.
Or just don't have kids.
Either way. Game on.
