NCAA Sports and You
A few weeks ago I attended the Illinois game and witnessed something I hadn't seen in awhile at a Penn State game. The fans booing the home team. I debated since then whether or not to write something on here about it since it's basically preaching to the choir, but as I head back up to State College this weekend I hope for a better fate and better fans.
We often talk about our favorite Penn State moments on here, whether it's the Lavar Leap or Hali sacking Troy Smith(can you believe he's starting for the niners this week, as a niners fan I'm thoroughly disgusted), but no one ever wants to talk about their least favorite moment. Mine was Senior Day 2007 having graduated the May before I was lucky to get the opportunity to come back and watch the game outside the student section. Anthony Morelli was announced and the fans reacted with a loud chorus of boos. These boos didn't come from just the student section which is a common whipping boy around here, but the entire stadium. I have never been so disgusted and embarrassed to be a Penn State fan in my entire life. So two weeks ago when I hear the boo birds again after another 3 and out by the offense it reminded me how ugly sports fans can be.
At the game there was a couple sitting in front of us who did nothing but complain about how this player was worthless or terrible, usually using a lot more extreme language than I'll use here. In fact they were so brazen to say on every fourth down that Penn State should go for it because they weren't going to win another game. And this was in the first quarter when the game was still in doubt. It's this kind of mentality that has to change if Penn State is truly going to be the best college experience in football.
I'm sure everyone has seen the NCAA commercial about gambling with all the athletes saying what they're majoring in and saying they're going pro in something other than the sport they play. I think it's important to remember that at the end of the day, most of the people on the field on this Saturday or any Saturday won't be NFL players in a few years. Yes I understand they're getting a free education but the fact of the matter is they're AMATEUR athletes. And more importantly they're kids. Try to remember back to when you were 18 or 19 imagine how you would feel at that age if you thought 100k hated you and booed you relentlessly. Most of these kids like most of you who visit this website dreamed of being Penn State football players. I can assure you most of those dreams didn't end with getting run over by Tony Richardson, or getting hammered by Illinois.
That brings us back to Morelli who has been vilified by the fan base since his graduation. Which in hindsight the team wasn't really that bad while he was here. Many seem to think we missed out on two national titles while he was QB but that's another story. I've never met Anthony and I know on a few occasions his senior year he said things that made him seem like a punk, but I can all but guarantee his gameplan wasn't to go out there and throw three interceptions a game. As a kid he like many of you probably laid in bed dreaming of wearing the blue and white, some probably still dream that. In college I'm sure he didn't lay in bed and dream of throwing pick sixes repeatedly. And yet the fans felt the need to boo him constantly during his time here. If any of you have ever been athletes you'll know that when you make a mistake at a sport no one feels worse than the person who made the mistake. Some handle it better than others which is what makes a good athlete great but everyone makes mistakes, and they all know it. They don't need the fans to let them know. This isn't to say you can't come on here on Monday and say man the offensive line really looked over powered, or make other constructive criticisms but at the stadium you are the for support.
The final point I want to make is that while I don't think you should boo any college athlete, I realize asking people not to boo Michigan is a whole different battle. Remember this these are your Penn State Nittany Lions. Chances are things won't always go well tomorrow night. But instead of raining down a chorus of boos after a three and out that ends with Royster up the middle for a yard on 3rd and 8, save your frustration and anger for when the defense gets on the field and get loud. This extends to all college sports whether it be volleyball or wrestling or field hockey. I know everyone wants to see their team win and hates to lose. But lets take a second to think about the athletes in those uniforms, before feeling the need to disparage them.
So if you're at the game on Saturday night, be loud, be very loud, make it the toughest place shoelace will ever play. But keep the boos in Philly and Pittsburgh for the pro teams in the state.

I wouldn’t give a hoot in hell for a man who lost and laughed.
Yawn.

sorry my comment didn't peak your interest
I’ll make sure next time to either talk about Iowa, some country song no one has ever heard of or some civil war battle.
I wouldn’t give a hoot in hell for a man who lost and laughed.
Jtot told me to do that when someone made a comment I thought was silly (Philly fans need to make up their minds - are you misjudged or are you so defensive for a reason?)
So blame him.
Also, personal attack.

if Jtot told you to jump off a bridge...
also how is misjudged and defensive mutually exculsive? Could one not be defensive b/c they are misjudged?
I wouldn’t give a hoot in hell for a man who lost and laughed.
If jtot told me to jump off of a bridge, I’d do it. I’m a sucker for peer pressure.
Anyway, Philly fans are always ranting about how everyone makes up stuff and they’re not really that bad and people should really stop complaining about you, and yet it seems to me that many of the arguments about Philly fans are started by Philly fans. It’s just weird is all. Plus I’m tired of the arguing about that particular issue.

What i love about philly fans
is that they are there for their team even when they are underachieving. Not many fanbases are like this. Penn state is one of them. Sometimes we can be rough, but I hate when people act high and mighty.
I agree that we shouldn't boo,
but remember… there will always be idiots in any crowd, and many of the boos you hear in Beaver Stadium tend to be after 1st and 10 and a run up the middle, 2nd and 8 and a run up the middle 3rd and 6 and an incomplete pass.

Everyone has their breaking point.
Most of us haven’t reached ours yet because we (blog readers overall, not just BSD), generally speaking, are more informed than Casual Fan. After two 3-and-outs, the fat guy sitting next to you who keeps asking when LJ is going in will be booing.
However, that’s not to say some people won’t reach their breaking points soon. At some point, the doors of perception are cleansed. Personally, barring a losing-out-ending, I don’t think I would boo the team this year. But that’s just me.

The only time I would've been tempted to boo
was in the 3rd and 4th quarters of the Illinois game… not because they sucked, but because they gave up. They shouldn’t ever give up

Troy Smith is the best QB to come out of Ohio State
since I started watching football in 1996. Also, the Ravens suck for not developing him correctly… had they, you never would have heard of Joe Flacco

Interesting
I’ve thought about this a few times, and people forget that Troy was supposed to be the opening day starter a few years ago and then got a random ailment (tonsillitis?) a couple days before the opener, at which point Flacco took the reins and never looked back. Although, Flacco was an 18th overall pick while Troy went in the 5th round, so essentially, I should stop talking because I don’t know anything.
"He's a beast. But so am I. So let the beasting begin."
Penn State Fans
booed the Penn State offense during the Illinois game when the offense failed to score a TD with 1st and Goal from the 9 yard line.

I was at Senior Day 2007 as a student
And I honestly do not remember the booing. Not trying to discredit psuwresfan, I just don’t remember. At that point in his career, I just felt bad for all QB#14 had been through, and like our poster said, they’re all still kids anyway. That said, this was before the @ MSU debacle two weeks later.
"He's a beast. But so am I. So let the beasting begin."
I was at a game after he graduated and he was back for some reason and people booed him then
That was ridiculous. I agree with PSUwresfan and think it is a great reminder of how we should act at the game. Most booing happens spontaneously as a result of emotions that people are feeling. Booing is a product of the environment and passion that people have for PSU football.
No one told you when to run, you missed the starting gun
I think it's about maturity.
when you graduate and look back, it’s easy to criticize. I don’t deny that I’ll do the same. but when you were a student I’m sure you had critics from people who graduated in the 90’s.
all I can say about this article is
BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!
but I do agree with you, I have only boo’ed refs before
+1

Real fans don't boo their home team.
If they disgust you that much then stay home and let someone else who will enjoy the game have your ticket. When you boo your home team you give aid and comfort to the opposition.
And don’t tell me just because someone paid for a ticket they have the right to boo. What about my right to enjoy the game with the ticket I paid for?

In college.
I agree with you for college games, and I never booed PSU players while I was in school. Refs? They’re fair game and generally terrible at their jobs. However, I boo my home team if they’re getting paid millions of dollars and are playing like they don’t care about winning. I know some teams are just bad, but even if you’re bad I like to see effort from the team. If you aren’t giving your best effort to win every night, you’re cheating the fans and you deserve to be booed.

I try not to even boo professional players

I booed
- and I’d do it again because he brought it on himself.
I will not boo this team, just as I didn’t boo the ‘00, ’01, ’03 and ’04 teams. I don’t think it is right to boo a team that doesn’t have the talent to get it done.
@collegiatestdms
ok
if you type # 1 4 all together it becomes 1.?
@collegiatestdms
The booing at Penn State
Is nowhere near as bad as the booing that goes on at Minnesota. They routinely boo their team off the field at half time/end of the game, after the first 3 and out of the day, after turnovers, because they feel like it… they also left the stadium (earlier in the season) chanting “Fire Brewster” and “Who hates Brewster? We hate Brewster!”.
So while our fans may boo occasionally, it can always be worse.
