jesse. is an idiot open thread. (UPDATED with Pitt Homecoming Photo

I’d like to thank Rich Rodriguez for turning Michigan in West Virginia.  I’d like to thank Rich Rodriguez for making West Virginia look appealing to Michigan.  In short, I like Rich Rodriguez.  I thank him, although I’ll never bet on him against Joe Paterno again.  Of course, even if Paterno coaches ‘till 100, I doubt I’ll get the chance.

I’d like to thank the defense for being good enough, and making an ass hole out of me.  I can live with that.

I'd like to thank Michigan's defense for being a Karate Kid Leaning Montage away from being half as good as Temple.

I still think Matt McGloin is an FCS quarterback.  But he had a hell of a day today.  Good for millzners.  And McGloin I suppose.

I was wrong.  Let me have it.  I love beating Michigan however it comes.  Have fun at my expense.

Even I underestimated the Nittany Lions

I predicted a 38-31 win. Michigan did score 31, but we scored what I’ll call 41 with an asterisk, because Joe, in his great wisdom, decided to not make the score look too ridiculous so that RichRod might keep his job.

While DickRod will probably bear the brunt of this

and be the one to lose his job, all they really need to do is get a decent DC (and someone who can recruit defenses).

Of course, it is hard to say how good that offense really is, or if it is just Denard.

by The JuggerNitt on Oct 31, 2010 10:58 AM EDT up reply actions

Its Denard

and the kid is unbelievable. Seeing him live makes you a believer. If that team gave him any help at all, including play calling, they would be scoring 50 every game. He is phenomenal talent and athlete. He also plays his guts out. RR does not deserve to have DR on his team, he is not worthy of such an incredible kid.

RR is going to kill poor DR

Whatever

by letsgopsu on Oct 31, 2010 8:52 PM EDT up reply actions

that short break wasn't just to catch his breath

he re-aggravated whatever injury (hip I think?) he sustained earlier in the year. It wasn’t like he got nailed on that hit, either, just sorta upended and landed funny. Injuries like that can pile up during the course of the season, and with the amount he runs, I’m surprised he isn’t banged up a bit more already.

Hopefully the Michigan season will end in 4 weeks and he can start his offseason rehab.

All we need is for Purdue to step it up in 2 weeks and it’s “Hello 5 and 7”

by Frank O'Brien on Nov 1, 2010 12:33 PM EDT up reply actions

That's not what I'm hoping for though

I am the world’s biggest Michigan fan for the rest of the season, in what is almost certainly a vain hope for a Big Ten Championship and for RichRod to be at Michigan forever.

The way I see it is this: 5 weeks in, 4 weeks to go, and there are 4 teams with one loss and 4 teams with two. We’re only one game back, and have games against two of the four teams in front of us (@OSU, vs. MSU) and one team tied with us (jNW). If PSU can win out (quit laughing!), Ohio State beats Iowa (I feel so incredibly dirty for hoping this will happen), and Michigan beats Wisconsin (Wisconsin in the Big House is like PSU against Iowa or @NW, they always play far below what they’re capable of), PSU will tie for the Big Ten Title and have the longest winning streak of anybody they’re tied with at the end of the season.

BCS Bowl? It’s not out of the cards yet.

someone on MGoBlog

said something very insightful… what does a field goal do for you? It has you go from up 2 scores to up 2 scores… a kickoff might allow them to get a quick return TD, but even if you miss there, you still pin them on the 20 and you’re still up 2 scores

DR is really good...

and so is there offensive line, but their other skill players aren’t any better than average. The best plays for the PSU D were when DR handed it to a back. I might be exaggerating, but I don’t think a Michigan RB broke a tackle all game long. It seems that the Michigan RB YPC numbers that the Michigan guys were bragging about are a function of a.) the offensive line and b.) the D keying on DR.

I was wrong, too

I expected the worst from McGloin, but he was perfect. He hit some big throws, and (I typically hate this term) but managed the game spectacularly. The only time I cringed when he threw it was on the TD pass to Zug, because it looked like he threw it off his back foot. But that throw was perfect.

Offensively, there was so much to like about this game. The offensive line was very good, there were no turnovers, Zug (as MIke predicted) was a factor, and the playcalling was, for the most part, very good. I thought there was no chance PSU was going to go for it on fourth down in the second quarter, but I was wrong. And the fake field goal brought back fond memories of the 1995 game for me.

Pitt put 8 in the box and dared them to throw. RR just kept running his offense….kept trying to pound the square peg into the round hole. That and the fact that Pitt wanted that game more (hey, that’s understandable…they were at the end of a losing season and all WVU had on the line was a trip to the NC game). They will claim 55,000 were there but you can see only about 45,000 showed up. One of the big problems is that the Big East doesn’t travel well and has no alumni bases in the other cities. If there were 100 Louisville fans there, that would be an overstatement! I feel bad for the three legit (well, almost legit) programs (PITT, Cuse and WVU) because Louisville, Rutgers, So. FL, Cinci, Memphis (oh yeah, they’re not in there yet) really drag them down. PITT, Cuse and WVU are just fighting a huge uphill battle.

How would you like to be the team that has to play their rep?

It would totally stink. Win and everyone says “yeah, but it was only a Big East team and the BE stinks”. Plus it wouldn’t do much if anything to move you up in the rankings. Losing would be even worse for obvious reasons. And how excited would you fans be? It would be a total letdown once it was announced.

PaJoe hit the nail on the head. There are 3 programs in that conference with any tradition….the rest are jokes. There is NO WAY that conference should have an auto BCS bid. They are probably the 8th best conference in the country.

Thats how it was when we played FSU in 05

Even though FSU was a solid football team, they were ranked 22 going into the game. When Tech lost to FSU in the ACC championship game, there was an audible groan on campus.

Of course it was a thrilling game, plus the Bowden/Paterno storyline was hyped (more than the game itself) so its easy to forget how much PSU felt like they got jobbed having to play a 3 (or was it 4) loss ACC team in the Orange bowl.

The same could be said about the Fiesta bowl when Boise state shocked Ok. Although to be fair OK played approximately 5 minutes of football versus Boise’s 60. But that just goes to show its tough to get up for those bowl game let downs.

but they got a lot of respect from college football outsiders for their win over TCU last year in the Fiesta Bowl. I’m sure that they were better than Cincy, but they weren’t even close to the level of talent Florida had. Florida would have won by 35+.

Of course thats my opinion. But it certainly would have shut up the ‘Boise state deserves a shot at the national title’ crowd.

The BCS was willing to throw away the Fiesta bowl though to try to get some ratings elsewhere. Hedge their bets and hope people watch Florida vs undefeated AQ school, or have Florida-Boise, Cincy-TCU. The rest of the country would have rather watched a re-run of the RealHousewives of New Jersey

by psuphysicist on Nov 1, 2010 4:53 PM EDT up reply actions

I don't know.

Kellen Moore might have had a field day against their pass defense. The corner opposite Haden was awful and Alabama royally owned him and Florida’s entire defense in the SECCG.

For all the crap we give Wil Wheaton, he can still tackle better than Asante Samuel...

by OBrienSchofieldismyHero on Nov 1, 2010 4:54 PM EDT up reply actions

Maybe not 35+

but I don’t think the game would have ever been in question. Either way I would have rather seen that. Boise State either puts up or shuts up. Instead we get to have this debate for another year

by psuphysicist on Nov 1, 2010 4:56 PM EDT up reply actions

I agree Florida is better. A good bit better.

And I actually hate the “Boise deserves a shot at the title game” crap talk. I guess all I’m saying is they’re better than a lot of people think they are and they’re better than any team in the Big East this year and last, thus they woule’ve given Florida a better game.

by J Breezy on Nov 1, 2010 4:56 PM EDT up reply actions

Oh definitely

Boise State is a good team. Way better than any team in the Big East. But put any of Boise State’s teams in the SEC, Big10, PAC10, Big12 (south), and even the ACC and you get a team that finishes 8-4, 9-3 each year. Respectable, but not NC worthy.

by psuphysicist on Nov 1, 2010 5:00 PM EDT up reply actions

But back to the main point

Big East sucks. Being the Big East champ is kind of like being the smartest retard.

by psuphysicist on Nov 1, 2010 5:02 PM EDT up reply actions

the innapropriate quote you were looking for was:

“Being the Big East champ is kind of like coming in first at the Special Olympics. Even if you win you’re still retarded”

by The JuggerNitt on Nov 1, 2010 7:56 PM EDT up reply actions

Boise would finish better than

8-4 and 9-3 in the ACC. They have as much talent as any team in that conference and a much better coach than any of the teams in that conference.

Opulence, I has it.

by Esteban d' Amur on Nov 1, 2010 5:02 PM EDT up reply actions

Yea, ACC was a stretch

and PAC10 as well (before this year). Still, I would be shocked to see them finish any of these past 3 seasons undefeated

by psuphysicist on Nov 1, 2010 5:04 PM EDT up reply actions

Exactly

You have to be something extremely special to finish undefeated in a tough conference.

Very few teams are that kind of special.

by psuphysicist on Nov 1, 2010 5:22 PM EDT up reply actions

usually about 1-3 per year

and usually they go to the MNC game. That’s sorta the point of the discussion, though, since Boise goes undefeated like every friggen year in their conference, so thinks they deserve the MNC game, when most people don’t think they’d go undefeated in most AQ conferences (and therefore they likely wouldn’t go to the MNC game)

by The JuggerNitt on Nov 1, 2010 7:59 PM EDT up reply actions

Since when...

does deservn’ having anything to do with it?

Opulence, I has it.

by Esteban d' Amur on Nov 2, 2010 7:13 AM EDT up reply actions

Agree completely.

Believe I said the same thing earlier.

by J Breezy on Nov 1, 2010 7:47 PM EDT up reply actions

perhaps if Florida played better during the regular season

they wouldn’t have had to worry about getting screwed in bowl selection.

Alabama had a pretty good bowl, if I recall correctly…

by The JuggerNitt on Nov 1, 2010 7:53 PM EDT up reply actions

I honestly don't know.

But the current Pitt team will put some guys in the pros, too.

A big problem at Pitt is coaching, and not just Wanny. The position coaches are not getting the most out of what they have. Not that Pitt is great…they aren’t…but they are better than they’ve shown most years.

by J Breezy on Nov 1, 2010 4:34 PM EDT up reply actions

Coaching was an issue with that FSU team as well

Jimbo was the head coach for all intents and purposes, he just wasn’t allowed to pick his staff. Incidentally, thats one of the biggest reasons the boosters told Bowden to GTFO- he was going to hire a shiatty old friend DC that was really going to set the program back. If it wasn’t for that audacity, they may have let him stay another year and gone out respectably

by psuphysicist on Nov 1, 2010 4:47 PM EDT up reply actions

Oklahoma is the biggest egg layer of all time in BCS bowls.

Only you’d never know it because all ESPN et al do is rip on Ohio State’s BCS performances and to a lesser degree the Big 10.

by J Breezy on Nov 1, 2010 4:13 PM EDT up reply actions

I have no idea what the rules are about that

but I do remember the ’04 Pitt team got into the top 25 at the end of the season, not because anybody in their right mind thought Pitt belonged there, but because they were going to the BCS and so the voters felt obligated to put them there.

Can you feel a little love? Dream on; dream on

by ckmneon on Nov 1, 2010 1:31 PM EDT up reply actions

I was wondering that myself.

I thought there was some kind of rule in order to get a BCS berth….something like having to be ranked in the top 15 or something like that. I was wondering the same thing with the Big East this year. But whatever it is you can rest assured the “powers that be” in college football will ensure that whoever comes out of that putrid conference will meet the criteria. No way do they want that embarrassment.

by J Breezy on Nov 1, 2010 4:15 PM EDT up reply actions

The Big East Champ gets an Aautomatic bid

Their champion could be ranked 50th in the polls, they still get a bid.

I do think PITT has a good chance to run the table in the conference, finish 9-3 and be ranked in the top 20. They do have good players. They have a poor coach. The Big East sucks (remember, they have already beaten Cuse and Rutgers). I can see them winning out in spite of DW.

Perfection is not attainable, but if we chase perfection we can catch excellence.
Vince Lombardi

by PaJoe on Nov 1, 2010 4:34 PM EDT up reply actions

That will probably happen.

The only team with a chance of beating them is WVU and they’ve just lost to Cuse and UConn, two awful teams. Their coaching is bad, too. But my WVU buddies are actually fearing that they will beat Pitt by a point and that will save Stewart’s job (who they don’t like)!

by J Breezy on Nov 1, 2010 4:37 PM EDT up reply actions

Remember the Marshall fiasco

WVU should have lost that game. However, PITT-WVU is a game you should never bet on. Odd things always seem to happen. Wanny will probably coach at his worst, but Stewart may out do him.

It’s a shame for some of those PITT players. They deserve better than DW.

Perfection is not attainable, but if we chase perfection we can catch excellence.

Non AQ conferences

can become AQ conferences. There is some formula out there- I’m too lazy to look it up right now.

I’m not sure if you can lose your AQ status, however.

by psuphysicist on Nov 1, 2010 4:43 PM EDT up reply actions

I think the top 14 ranking

applies to an at-large type bid.

Judging from that picture I'd say no way were 45K there.

I’d say 40 tops, probably 35.

This is what you get when you move football off campus. Why they ever did that I’ll never know.

by J Breezy on Nov 1, 2010 1:09 PM EDT up reply actions

So many teams lie about attendance

If I’m not mistaken, you have to average 30,000 per home game to be 1A, or at least that’s what the rules were when the 1A-1AA split was made. The thing is, the NCAA just takes ADs’ word for it.

Here is an article on it from a few years ago in the Pgh Trib.

http://www.pittsburghlive.com/x/pittsburghtrib/sports/college/s_465583.html

Here are some interesting excerpts:

“It could be tickets sold (regardless of whether or not the fans actually came to the game).

It could be tickets distributed (the drop count, plus freebies and unused paid tickets).

It could be total attendance (everyone in the venue, regardless of whether they have a ticket)."

“West Virginia uses the turnstile count. Pitt announces tickets sold. Penn State records tickets distributed.

“We’re trying to get as accurate a number as we can for the total number of people in the stadium,” said Greg Myford, Penn State associate athletic director for marketing and communications."

“Last year, Pitt drew a standing-room crowd of 66,451 for its season-opener against Notre Dame. For the other five games at Heinz Field, the average crowd, based on tickets sold, was 35,036 — and at some games, the actual crowd appeared to be much smaller than the number announced.

Borghetti said Pitt keeps track of the turnstile count for football games, but he refused to release those figures to the Tribune-Review.

“Gee, I wonder why?” said Jackson, the Temple professor. "How many comps are they giving away? They’re trying to get fans in the seats. I bet if you were able to compare the gate receipts to the actual number of people in the stands, the numbers wouldn’t match up.

“How would you like to be the CEO of Heinz, and find out the average attendance in the stadium that has your name on it is only a few thousand people?”

John Abrams, Pitt’s director of facilities and operations, declined to be interviewed for this story."

I'm pretty sure the WPIAL championship games

draw a larger crowd than the average Pitt game does.

by psuphysicist on Nov 1, 2010 5:11 PM EDT up reply actions

Actually, no.

Those games don’t draw well at all. If they’re lucky they’ll get 10K for the quad game. It looks way worse than a Pitt game. I hate that they play those games there (and I’ve been there to watch my school in the champ. game). The field is bad enough that time of year from Pitt and the Steelers…why they permit them to have 4 games in one day is beyond me.

They should either spread them out at some of the nicer HS stadiums or have them at Cal State (very nice, but not really centrally located) or Robert Morris.

by J Breezy on Nov 1, 2010 7:50 PM EDT up reply actions

Where did you go to high school?

My high school team played there in 2002 (Mars). You’re right though, it’s a bit depressing playing there because drawing 10k in a 65k stadium makes it look like no one showed up.

Though to be clear, I was attempting humor by using hyperbole.

by psuphysicist on Nov 1, 2010 8:08 PM EDT up reply actions

Well, I went to a Catholic high school.

But the district I’ve lived in all my life was in the final the first year of Heinz…2001, I believe that was. One of my best friends is the coach, but he was still an assistant to his dad then. His dad (who was a great guy and good man) put in 44 years (as the school’s only coach in its history) before finally retiring a few years ago. So I’m pretty close to the program. Do the sticks for home games….got a playoff game this Friday, which means we’ll each get $20 from the WPIAL. That’s our only “money game”!

Mars in 2002…was that the team with Brad Mueller…the fast kid who went to BC?

Not sure if you're being serious or sarcastic, but....

…I’m not a big fan of Heinz. I’m a Steelers season ticket holder and I liked 3 Rivers much better. I have excellent seats in Heinz, but actually liked my 3 Rivers ones better. But that’s not why I liked 3 Rivers better. I guess the word that best describes Heinz for me is underwhelming. I expected more. 3 Rivers was louder, too.

If you really want cool, PNC Park is the place. But unlike Heinz its product (Pirates) stinks. And unlike football in 3 Rivers, baseball was HORRIBLE to watch in 3 Rivers.

Now…here’s what I wish Pgh had done. Renovated 3 Rivers for football only….still built PNC Park…still built something like Consol Center, but for basketball (Pitt mainly) too….and renovated Pitt Stadium thus keeping major college football in Pgh where it belongs – on campus.

by J Breezy on Nov 1, 2010 4:32 PM EDT up reply actions

BMan hit it on the head

PITT is a Basketball school. They made the decision to have the B-ball arena in the middle of campus. Football took, and will continue to take, a back seat until they get out of the Catholic-driven Big East.

I think people get overly nostalgic about 3 Rivers.

You’re not the first person I’ve heard say something like “I expected more” from Heinz Field, but I’ve never been quite sure what people mean by that.

by Joe 96alum on Nov 1, 2010 11:28 PM EDT up reply actions

It just doesn't excite me.

You walk into PNC Park and it’s like “Wow!”. Heinz is like, “Ummm…ok”.

To be more specific:

Seats are too far away on the sides.

Not enough seats undercover. I’m on the 40 in the lower level on the visitors side and even on a sunny day you get baked in the afternoon sun. Seats in 3 Rivers were higher, but better. Section 444 (45 yard line), under cover with a tv above us (and as a bonus Mike Wagner behind us and Franco in the next section over.) Most covered seats are at the top.

Not a fan of the open end. Let’s in the cold wind off the river (or lake, as Bubby Brister would say) and let’s the noise out. 3 Rivers was much louder.

Great Hall is nothing special in my opinion.

Bathrooms are ridiculous (trough).

Buddy is in section 125, right next to the visitors tunnel. There is no aisle on the tunnel side so he has to walk past about 20 people to get in and out. Would it have killed them to put a single aisle there for ingress and egress (noticed the same thing is true in the section by the Steelers tunnel. This is something you wouldn’t notice unless you were affected by it.)

It’s nothing special aesthetically.

And I hate sharing it with Pitt! My seat (which is on the aisle) has a feaking Panther emblem on it. Because of this silly sharedness (and I paid a big seat license…I think whoever sits in my seats for Pitt games should be paying me rent) there is no Steelers emblem at midfield or anything Steelers in the endzone, which I think stinks.

Again, it’s not horrible or even bad. I just expected better. Consol is great and so is PNC….Heinz is definitely a step below in my opinion. 3 Rivers was far from perfect, but that’s why I said I wished they’d kept it and renovated it to remedy its warts. Regardless, I still liked it better than Heinz.
