Some PSU Defense Tidbits
As I'm typing this, Cameron Wake is brutalizing Tom Brady. 3 knock downs, a sack, and it's just half way through the 2nd quater... Anyway, this got me thinking: where are the stars on this defense? I love Lynn and Morris, but up front we're just lacking the kind of super talent we just take for granted.
Each of the last 5 seasons we've had a breakout star on D-line, and we've had no fewer than 11 guys on our front 7 that are currently on NFL rosters. We've had 3 1st round picks from the defensive line. Here are some of the front 7 names that are on NFL rosters (and Evans, who I believe needs an honorable mention for his 12.5 sacks):
2005: Alford, Hali, Wake, Poz, Connor
2006: Alford, Poz, Connor, Lee, Shaw
2007: Connor, Lee, (Evans)
2008: Bowman, Hull, Maybin, Odrick
2009: Lee, Bowman, Hull, Odrick
2010: ?
Find me just two guys in the starting front 7 from Saturday that you think will make an NFL roster. Maybe the next Maybin, or Odrick is in there, but we just haven't seen it yet.
My point is, we're spoiled rotten by a fantastic run on the defense, and this is just a down year. A couple of years from now maybe we'll look back on this team like we do on the 2004 team: all the pieces were there, they just needed another year to put together.
