This team just can't finish tackles.

Can we turn down a bid to the Gator Bowl?
How exactly is our tackling going to improve before then?
Or push from the d-line?

With 6 men tackling, someone should be trying to strip the ball.

Have you ever been in a scrum like that? Everyone is battling in different directions to tackle. A good running back can just keep pumping.

Bad defense.
We double cover one guy, let another guy run completely free. This defense is a joke this year. We are going to be in big trouble in the bowl game if they don’t figure things out. I saw projections of us playing Florida or South Carolina. It might not be pretty.
when will we ever play up to better teams...
we win the ones we are supposed to and lose the ones we are supposed to…
i'm rooting for Wisconsin next!

i'd like to believe, but i don't
not with this team
that is why you leave teh 2 point attempt until the last TD
I wouldn’t give a hoot in hell for a man who lost and laughed.
Nope... now we know 2 TDs is the way to go

if we get stopped next possession
we could have kicked the FG and still be in a one score game
I wouldn’t give a hoot in hell for a man who lost and laughed.
right, but then we still need the 2 pt conversion
which, if that play was any indication, we wouldn’t have made, and so then we’d still need 2 TDs, but we would have wasted time with that FG.
by The JuggerNitt on Nov 27, 2010 2:54 PM EST up reply actions
i'm sure you are probably right
seeing that the psu coach’s kicked the extra point and they know a lot mroe than i do. But I still think you just leave yourself the chance for one score to tie game at end
I wouldn’t give a hoot in hell for a man who lost and laughed.
the way I figure, if you KNOW you'll need a 2 point conversion
(assuming that if MSU scores again, the game is over, since it is so late), then might as well do it first chance possible, so that way you gain information on what to do next, especially when it determines whether a FG is worthwhile or worthless. We now have resolved a FG is worthless, whereas if we saved the 2 pt conversion until after a FG, and on the last possible TD of the game, then we only too late find out that we kicked a worthless FG.

I don't hate him
but I’m still mad at his 4 almost interceptions, and 1 actual interception
by The JuggerNitt on Nov 27, 2010 3:15 PM EST up reply actions
obviously not
McGloin has thrown a much more dangerous ball than Bolden, but for some reason the DBs have not been able to hold onto them. Good for him, but still bad passes.
Bolden also threw some dumb passes, especially that one against Illinois where he went for the guy int he flat instead of the slot, but I don’t recall his passes on his INTs being quite as indefensible as McGloin’s (and McGloin’s almost INTs).
I am curious about who leads in interceptable balls (ie even if the defense doesn’t actually pick it, where they should have picked it).
by The JuggerNitt on Nov 27, 2010 3:19 PM EST up reply actions
McGloin has had no less than three in each game he has played in (minus YSU obviously since he didn't throw)
John has a long moustache
that's basically my only argument against McGloin
I don’t see how he doesn’t have at least 10 more INTs that I can think of. Glad he doesn’t, but still surprised.
I’m sure there were balls Bolden threw that DBs dropped, but I don’t recall them offhand.
by The JuggerNitt on Nov 27, 2010 3:23 PM EST up reply actions
One against Bama
that’s the only one I can remember… Bolden actually throws a good ball so people tend to catch his
John has a long moustache
Except our reciever's don't tend to catch them.
He throw’s harder than they seem comfortable with. Hopefully a year more in the system and his touch will improved, but there were many dropped balls that were rifled in when they didn’t need to be.
"This is being a Penn State fan. We’ll prove it, or we won’t. It’s not about proving it to them, it’s about proving to ourselves."
no one here hates McGloin
people hate Bolden or those who support him, but no one hates McGloin
John has a long moustache
Well at least one person I know does... but he hates all of PSU's black players
so I guess it doesn’t count
John has a long moustache
yeah you can't count that..
…that isn’t rational judgement
"They say in Happy Valley that if God wasn’t a Penn State fan, why is the sky blue and white?" Fortt said. "Who am I to argue with God?"
He didn't play well
and you know it. It’s just a dishonest argument at this point. He had one good quarter against a prevent defense.
John has a long moustache
Half of his incompletions were drops
and it was done against good competition
Black shoes, basic blues, no names, all game.
Well he proved one thing
he doesn’t need a running game against a prevent defense
John has a long moustache
don't forget the drops by the DBs
which probably accounted for half of the drops
by The JuggerNitt on Nov 27, 2010 3:23 PM EST up reply actions
Seriously, there was absolutely no reason not to see Bolden today
McGloin had an awful 3 quarters. I don’t think we’ll see Bolden anymore
John has a long moustache
and 4 dropped balls by DBs
if you’re gonna use the “dropped balls” as a reason his completion % was low, you also have to use it for why his INTs were low. There were 4 very interceptable balls that were dropped, and 1 that was caught
by The JuggerNitt on Nov 27, 2010 3:26 PM EST up reply actions
his completion percentage is probably
better than you are giving him credit for
Black shoes, basic blues, no names, all game.
worse than 50% in the first half 9/19
take out the 4th quarter and I bet it stayed that way
John has a long moustache
Probably but he played
4 quarters and led an improbable comeback
Black shoes, basic blues, no names, all game.
it wasn't improbable... in fact I called it.
BBDS defenses always lead to “comebacks”
John has a long moustache
23/43
so 53%
20 incomplete passes, 1/5 of which were near-interceptions. Not sure how many dropped balls by the receivers, though, but that leaves 16 more incompletions unaccounted for
by The JuggerNitt on Nov 27, 2010 3:29 PM EST up reply actions
Probably because he was throwing on 3rd and 20 the result of
drops and penalties
Black shoes, basic blues, no names, all game.
not really sure what you're trying to say here?
McGloin’s terrible decisions were excused because of that?
by The JuggerNitt on Nov 27, 2010 3:37 PM EST up reply actions
and I know for a fact that at least 2 of his near-interceptions weren't on third down
because we were able to convert for first down the next plays

They were 1 inch short. Now you don’t know if they would have gotten it or not, but I would guess it was better than 80% they knock it in.

Vince Lombardi
That's the more egregious one
oh and Cousins on his sneak wasn’t over either
John has a long moustache
Bigger calls than those spots were
three personal fouls, roughing the passer (questionable, but he did hit him in the helmet), roughing the kicker (both on Still) and the out of bound hit by Morris (?)
Perfection is not attainable, but if we chase perfection we can catch excellence.
Vince Lombardi
roughing the passer was technically the correct call (though tickytack)
and he did also run into the kicker, so that was the right call. Morris also hit the guy like 2 feet out of bounds (though he did look like he was still fighting for yards, he was WAY out of bounds)
by The JuggerNitt on Nov 27, 2010 3:28 PM EST up reply actions
I still maintain he roughed the kicker... that was really irresponsible
and the late hit was bad… he was still going forward… it’s like running after a fair catch
John has a long moustache
I don't think he was arguing the calls.
I think he was just pointing out that they all came at horrible times.
"This is being a Penn State fan. We’ll prove it, or we won’t. It’s not about proving it to them, it’s about proving to ourselves."
They were the correct calls
just bad execution by our guys. I am not saying they were bad calls
Perfection is not attainable, but if we chase perfection we can catch excellence.
Vince Lombardi
ok, then agreed
the late hit out of bounds probably didn’t change too much, though. They were driving, and had a first down anyway (I htink)

No rain here, sir
That ending was fun for me. But I’m strange and my enjoyment of Penn State football isn’t contingent on if the team wins or loses. Sure, this team may not be uber-elite next season, but they’ll be good enough to entertain me for 13 weekends of the year. And that’s all I really ask for these days.
Designated "New Thread Is Up" guy.
Jones comes back into the QB competition now too
so who knows who our QB is going to be… it’s probably McGloin
John has a long moustache
as it stands right now, he probably is
just the way Paterno does things
by The JuggerNitt on Nov 27, 2010 3:31 PM EST up reply actions
and if McGloin earns it in practice, he'll start
so really we’re in no different a situation, except that it is McGloin’s position to lose (ie if all 3 QBs perform about equally, then McGloin gets it by default)
by The JuggerNitt on Nov 27, 2010 3:39 PM EST up reply actions
And is that a problem?
Shouldn’t we be playing the QB that gives us the best chance to win? I want to see Bolden start, but I won’t complain if it’s Mac.

no, it isn't a problem
but my comment was in response to your “I’m more than willing ot bet that McGloin isn’t the opening day starter”

by The JuggerNitt on Nov 27, 2010 3:50 PM EST up reply actions
I saw a lot of things from JoePa this year I didn't expect
Sooo I’m not going to assume that McGloin is automatically the starter next year.
Save BSD
I'm not saying it is 100%
but whatever it is, I’d say his chances are higher than any of the other QBs.
The only real “firsts” from JoePa this year that I can think of are the true frosh starting QB and the walk-on starting at QB, so it is all basically the same argument. right now the walk-on has the call, and he will have to lose it first
by The JuggerNitt on Nov 27, 2010 4:19 PM EST up reply actions

but MANY MANY people didn’t understand why he was in 2 drives into the 3rd quarter (when I started claiming that he should STAY in)
John has a long moustache
and if you think I'm an anti-Bolden fan you're dead wrong..
I want him to be the starting QB because I believe he has better upside. I believe that this year wasn’t meant to be for him and it was too much on an 18 yo kid with no spring.
Don’t discount what bolden will learn in bowl preparations and in spring practice. And yeah, Mac is a big part of the reason he gets those extra practices.

Eh... McGloin's going to get the first team snaps, so I don't know how much it's going to help Bolden
I think he’ll probably slip down to 3rd on the depth chart next year… the coaches just don’t seem to think he can do it
John has a long moustache
If Bolden can't read a blitz..
then the coaches would be right.
Other than that, I don’t know what evidence you have that the coaches don’t believe in him. They’ve been riding a hot hand.

Hot in what sense of the word?
after OSU? After a very anemic performance against a crap team in Indiana? After the worst first half we’ve had since Iowa?
John has a long moustache
I mean, I'm not saying Bolden should start, but I don't know why he didn't get a chance
it’s just that he DIDN’T… that speaks volumes

sometimes when you win it ain't pretty
why couldn’t the defense stop one guy on IU? It was clearly obvious they were going to Doss all day, but he had his way.
Could have been a 14-0 PSU win if you stop him.

Problem is, we never got to see Bolden, so we never got an answer. I saw McGloin perform awfully today
and I saw Bolden do nothing
John has a long moustache
unfortunately :-\
but Moye was friggen amazing!

I feel like I could've thrown to Moye
and he would’ve run under and caught it
which would’ve been impressive as I would had a lame duck pass 6 yards down the field no doubt
John has a long moustache
yeah we saw him get decked on two straight possessions against jNW

and we saw McGloin play terrible on 3 straight posessions against jNW
but then had that one drive before halftime.
McGloin has had a longer leash than Bolden did, and maybe he deserves it, but it is definitely a longer leash. I just wonder why. Is Bolden that bad, or are they trying to protect him, or what?
by The JuggerNitt on Nov 27, 2010 3:43 PM EST up reply actions
And we saw McGloin get decked today... and he didn't get yanked
which is fine… but let’s not play these games… clearly the coaches don’t trust Bolden… so stop bringing it up… McGloin’s the guy for the next two years
John has a long moustache
FIne lets agree to disagree then
I just want my team to win without playing favorites.

Sounds good :-)
as I proved today, I can cheer for McGloin when I know he’s the guy… and today proved that he’s the guy no matter what
John has a long moustache
McGloin looked about as good against a top 10 team as Bolden did..
except Mac put the ball in the end zone more times.

right, so they look about the same
and yet one has an obviously longer leash.

Michigan State isn't Alabama
and our offensive line actually played today (which they didn’t against Alabama)
but really, there’s no point… we might see Bolden in three years.
John has a long moustache
Bolden moved the ball between the 20's at Bama
i didn’t forget that. He looked very good that game but he looked very young as well.

New Thread is Up

Do me a favor and keep the Bolden/McGloin bickering and arguing contained to this thread, ok?
Designated "New Thread Is Up" guy.
Triple coverage
But can’t stop staring at you.
Seems like a good throw.
