Penn State Wrestling News and Notes
The wrestling preseason is almost over as we've finally reached the intra-squad scrimmage tonight in Rec Hall. Next week I'll start with more regular updates breaking down the results and making predictions for upcoming dual meets.
Last week Penn State held wrestling media day and there was quite a bit of news. First on the injury front it was announced Pataky has a sprained knee among other injuries and he'll be back soon but no timetable was given. Surprisingly it sounds like freshman Frank Martellotti will get the start at 125 in place of Pataky.
Frank Molinaro is still recovering from his ankle injury and he could be ready as early as the season opener at Bloomsburg.
In a previously unannounced injury Clay Steadman is again battling neck problems that have plagued him in the past. Apparently he hasn't wrestled yet this season, so I wouldn't expect to see him any time soon. Justin Ortega has moved from 174 up to 197 to compete for the spot. Currently his top competition is coming from true freshman Nick Ruggear. It seems as though Cael has reversed his stance some on the all true freshman will redshirt stance.
Also announced at media day one of the Altons will wrestle this year, currently it looks like that will be Dylan. This is becoming a very interesting situation as you have Lynch who is a returning starter who was talked into coming back for a fifth year by the coaching staff against one of the most anticipated recruits Penn State has had in awhile.
At 133 true freshman (noticing a trend here?) Sam Sherlock appears to be completely recovered from a knee injury and will compete for the starting spot against returning starter Bryan Pearsall.
Another surprise seems to be what is brewing at 165 many people, myself included thought Jake Kemerer was a lock for the spot but apparently the it's still wide open with a close competition between Jake, Nick Fischer and true freshman Dirk Cowburn. With Kemerer and Fischer wrestling at the scrimmage it looks like this might be one weight where the true freshman ends up redshirting. Although it's important to remember that Cael has mentioned before the scrimmage matches aren't necessarily wrestle offs.
Preseason rankings are out and they're generally pretty favorable. I'm not a huge fan of preseason rankings in any sport but these do give some idea of how other people outside of Penn State see some of the young wrestlers that will be hitting the mat this year for Penn State. As team Penn State came in ranked 7th which puts them third in the Big Ten behind #4 Wisconsin and #5 Minnesota. Overall the Big Ten as usual looks incredibly strong with eight teams ranked in the top 20 #4 Wisconsin, #5 Minnesota, #7 Penn State, #8 Iowa, #11 Illinois, #13 Michigan, #16 Ohio State, #18 Northwestern.
Individually Penn State has quite a few ranked wrestlers. At 125 Pataky is currently unranked but that will change once he starts wrestling this year. He'll likely debut somewhere in the top ten.
At 141 Intermat currently has true freshman Andrew Alton ranked 13th that will likely change as he won't start the year, but if it's Dylan I would expect the ranking to stay about the same. I think if Lynch starts the year he'll likely be ranked around 20th.
At 149 Frank Molinaro starts the season ranked 3rd behind two returning National Champions, Darrion Caldwell won at 149 two years ago, and Kyle Dake who moves to 149 after winning the title as a true freshman at 141.
True Freshman David Taylor starts the season ranked 6th at 157. Notably former Nittany Lion starter Bubba Jenkins is ranked 3rd at 157.
Ed Ruth a redshirt freshman starts the year ranked 13th at 174.
Quentin Wright returns from his redshirt year ranked 3rd at 184.
At Heavyweight Cameron Wade starts the season ranked #9 it remains to be seen if this will finally be the year Wade lives up to his ranking, it hasn't happened yet.
The matches for tonight's scrimmage are as follows:
125: A battle of two true freshman as Nate Morgan takes on Frank Martellotti. This should be an exciting match for the fans to see the future of the lightweights. But once Pataky is healthy this will be his spot to lose.
133: This should be a match for the starting spot Bryan Pearsall who started most of the year last year, but struggled mightily, will look to win his job against Sam Sherlock who was a big time recruit. I predict Sherlock will ultimately win the spot here.
141: One of the Altons will take on returning starter Adam Lynch. Lynch struggled badly to start the year, but then he really turned it on when the Big Ten schedule started. I really have no idea how this will turn out. I do think it will be Dylan Alton in the wrestle off and Andrew will likely redshirt. I know many expect the Altons to win this easily, but don't forget Lynch beat some really good wrestlers during his campaign last year.
149: David Church takes on James English, for the right to back up Molinaro. Frank says he'll be ready for the first match but I wouldn't be surprised if Penn State holds off until at least Ohio State in mid December. I think English will win this match up he was a pretty good under the radar guy when he came to Penn State after having a great senior season.
157: David Taylor will wrestle James Vollrath, in what will likely be the coronation of the arrival of the magic man. I have to say after all the hype it will be interesting to see how Taylor looks when finally stepping on to the mat for Penn State.
165: As mentioned before this will be the match between Fischer and Kemmerer. While this one has apparently been hotly contested in the wrestling room, I still expect to see Kemmerer win the spot here after all is said and done. Don't forge this is the same kid who beat Valimont in wrestle offs last year.
174: Ed Ruth will wrestle Mike Lorenzo, Lorenzo now a senior has come a long way but Ruth should still win this match fairly easily. Fans have been eagerly waiting to see Ruth step on the mat he could make a pretty big splash this year. I wouldn't be surprised to see Lorenzo move up to 97 and make a run at what is now a wide open weight class, even if he does have to go up two classes to do it.
184 Quentin Wright returns after an exciting true freshman campaign that finished with All American honors Wright took a redshirt year last year. The sky is the limit for this kid, who could be a true national title contender despite moving up a weight this season. He'll take on freshman Andrew Church.
197 This could be one of the weakest spots in the Penn State lineup with or without Clay Steadman. Luckily help is on the way next year. This should be an interesting match up Ortega moves up from 174 to take on true freshman and fellow Oxford PA native Nick Ruggear. I think Ruggear will end up winning the spot.
Hwt Cameron Wade takes on freshman Jon Ginrich, it's Wade's spot to lose. I don't see Ginrich taking it from him but he should have a few fans in the stand being a local kid from Bald Eagle Area.
Exhibition
Dirk Cowburn will take on fellow freshman Brandon Phillips. Cowburn still has an outside shot at winning the 165 pound weight class, but both will likely redshirt and see action in open tournaments this year.

Do you like this story?

Oh, hell yeah
Was just about to write you actually, glad you put this up today. Yeah, preseason Cael comments seem to indicate he’s interested in pushing it this year. I think he’s got enough momentum in recruiting that he can afford to bounce some of the youngins’ redshirts to later years, if they end up being the best option on the mat this year. I got lots of (I understand, super-early and predictively tough) questions and some comments for you:
125: “But once Pataky is healthy this will be his spot to lose.” What are the chances that he does lose it to Martellotti?
133: Sherlock will be a huge upgrade to Pearsall here, right? Despite youth?
141: Both events are going to be very interesting to watch here: 1, the result of the wrestle-off (like you noted, Lynch really came on last year) and 2, the starter Cael trots out regardless of the wrestle-off. Counting the Altons as only one, you’ve still got 4 scenarios there: Lynch wins/Lynch starts, Lynch wins/Alton starts, Alton wins/Lynch starts, Alton wins/Alton starts. What happens there will go further to tell us how this team may fare this year
149: Frankie’s had some tough, tough opponents in his class. Last year he had those 3 studs in front of him in the Big Ten. And for him to win an NC this year, he’s got Caldwell AND Dake? I hope he keeps improving.
157: I gather you found that Magic Man video pretty weird like I did. Given that and that it was released by his family, what is your early take on Taylor? I thought that the video existed was pretty bizarre, but in it, I came away really liking the kid. He seems very unstereotypical Wrestler in many ways. What’s your take?
165-174: I just want to watch
184: I’m real interested in Chris Perry coming out from redshirt. Can’t remember if OSU appears for us in tourneys like they did in the VA duals last year?
197: is the help you referrred to Morgan McIntosh, or that Pitt(?) transfer coming in Jan? Refresh me please?
HWT: I really liked reading about all the stars who were camping out at the NLWC this offseason. You gotta believe Wade got better grappling with Varner and Anspach and those guys this offseason right?
The offensive line was inspired by McGloin.
Wow
That’s quite the response I’ll try to answer all your questions as best as I can. I will try to be more frequent and prompt with my posts now that the season is here. I’ve been extremely busy and it’s tough in the offseason when there is a very little news released out to the public.
125 I want to say zero, haha but I really don’t know how good Martellotti is. Pataky is an All American caliber wrestler and it’s very few freshman reach that in their freshman year.
133 Sherlock should be a pretty big upgrade, he definitely has better high school credentials. Youth is a question because the jump from high school to college is a pretty big one. But I think that kid has the talent to pull it off. It’s also a little easier at the lighter weights where there are typically more underclassmen.
141 Yea lots of options at 41. The one thing we know is Cael won’t have the Altons wrestle off against each other which I like. I think Cael will let the winner wrestle I really do. I don’t think he cares much about how badly people want to see the Altons, if Lynch wins he’ll get the job. I do agree this weight could be a huge swing weight for Penn State. Is started last year as a sure loss and then Lynch started picking up some key wins down the stretch. I feel a little for Lynch as if he struggles at this year people will certain be clamoring to see an Alton instead.
149: I think Frank still has plenty he can work on, he needs to improve controlling ties and getting his spacing against stronger guys on his feet. And can improve on the mat. In pictures I’ve seen of him he looks absolutely huge, I honestly didn’t think he could get much bigger. That being said why Dake is clearly really good I think it will be interesting to see how he handles the move up in weight. I think Frank has a decent shot against Caldwell style wise, should be an interesting match up.
157 The video was definitely weird. My early take is like that despite that video he still seems pretty humble. I think he has a ton of talent he was the top recruit in the country for a reason. I think he’s got a shot at an All American finish this year in a decent but not great weight class.
184: Interesting you should mention Perry I wanted to bring that up but forgot to include. He and a few other OklaSU (just so no one else gets confused) are in some hot water. The story is here. Not sure how much it will effect Perry he should still wrestle I think. Unfortunately we won’t see OSU at any tournaments this year as they are no longer in the Virginia Duals.
197 Morgan Mcintosh is who I was referring to. I don’t know of any other pitt transfers we got this year. You maybe confusing Crowell who transfered from Pitt last year but is no longer with the team. And Platt who was with Penn State and left and came back last spring hoping to get eligible. It appears at this point as that won’t happen unfortunately. But Morgan should be a big upgrade starting next year.
Hwt You would think they would help some. Anspach has been working with Wade for years now and it hasn’t seemed to have made much of a difference. Cael is a pretty big himself. I think at this point it’s on Cameron. Honestly I think it’s mostly a mental thing he needs to have confidence in himself when he steps out there. That can be a pretty tough thing to over come.
Hope that helps.
Sweet, thanks
Yeah, was remembering you talking about Platt. Why won’t he get eligible? Is he practicing with the team?
Thanks for the OkSU link. Sounds pretty funny:
The situation started at a party Oct. 1 in the 400 block of Hester Street. Joshua Matlock, who threw the party with his roommates, got mad when he saw several wrestlers drinking his liquor, Dickerson said. Matlock took the alcohol from them, sparking a fist-fight between a group of wrestlers and the men who lived at the house, he said.
During the altercation, Matlocks’ wallet fell out of his pocket. One of the wrestlers picked up the wallet. Some of the wallets’ contents were found later in the front yard, but not his credit card, Dickerson said.
Several of the wrestlers went to a Stillwater gas station and asked an unknown man to go inside and buy them beer and something for himself, too. The wrestlers couldn’t purchase beer because they are minors.
Not sure what I would do if I ‘saw several wrestlers drinking my liquor’, but it probably wouldn’t be start a fist fight with them.
The offensive line was inspired by McGloin.
Haha
Yea unless you’re the size of Devon Still I have to say that’s not the best decision. But you know never doubt those beer muscles.
Platt’s problem is and always has been academics. I know he’s not in practice he was wrestling with the club team in the spring. I don’t know if that’s still the case. I have a feeling since nothing has been said about him the ship has probably sailed. Shame the kid was a tremendous talent just couldn’t get it together. In his defense I heard he was really putting in the work last spring and over the summer it just wasn’t enough.
Remind me again what happened to Bubba
Hey PSUWRESFAN, good to see you back. Hope you can find a way to see the scrimmage tonight. If you have time, can you remind me how/why we lost Bubba Jenkins?
Essentially they didn't get along
Some say that Bubba didn’t have a work ethic that matched with what Cael wanted. I don’t know how true that was though.
Bubba started to sour long before Cael stepped foot on campus. He wanted a redshirt year after his freshman year due to feeling a little burned out. But Sunderland for one reason or another wouldn’t give him a redshirt. Then last year with a move to 57 planned Cael wanted him to wrestle, many believe so that he could redshirt Taylor who was one of his guys. So Bubba responded by failing a class on purpose so he would be forced to sit for at least the first semester. Then while still here he failed to make weight for an open tournament.
It seemed like the split was pretty amicable last year, until Bubba got to Arizona St and then he start firing pot shots at him left and right. I have a feeling there’s no love loss there. Should be really interesting if Taylor and Bubba get a chance to wrestle this year. Which could happen at the Virginia duals.
Also should point out here
That while you could argue Bubba isn’t being a team player I do feel he got somewhat of a raw deal for the coaching staffs while he was here mostly from the Sunderland era. He really needed a redshirt year coming in but when Galloway transfered out he was thrust into the starting lineup.
It actually brings up an interesting scenario of who should have the final say when an athlete in any sport says they want to redshirt.
I also didn’t really like how Cael handled Bubba’s exit by only granting his partial release. I feel like if he really didn’t want him he should allow him to wrestle where ever he chooses.
I’m not really sure I fall on either side of this one I think both parties have dirt on their hands.
I understand that
And while I don’t think that’s really fair, it was more the other schools that he wouldn’t allow him to go to that bothered me.
I'm excited for this year but I think next year is the big jump.
the Lynch/Alton choice is the most interesting situation on the team. It would be nice to see everything click for Ortega this year but if Ruggear is better, so be it. Just hope Sherlock is 100% if he is going to go at 133.
eff it, I'm going derp
Bman, did you watch that Magic Man vid?
Do you have thoughts on Taylor?
The offensive line was inspired by McGloin.
I have not seen the video
I have seen Taylor wrestle and the kid is fantastic. He has grown alot since high school too (in size, 135 to 157 is a big jump). I do understand he is a bit of a character but I will have to check out the video if it exists somewhere.
eff it, I'm going derp
Here
You go. Quality’s a little scratchy, but vodpod’s isn’t any better.
The offensive line was inspired by McGloin.
I agree about next year
But I still have high hopes for this season partly due to NCAA being in Philly it would be awesome to get to see Penn State win a title or at least compete for it live.
I have a feeling Sherlock should be full go, do wish we had a chance to give him a year though.
I’ve soured on Ortega last year due his style, but I do think he would fare better at 197. I’m not that familiar with Ruggear honestly, but I’ve heard good things so far so we’ll see how he does.
I had soured on Ortega
until I heard about his health issues last year. Maybe moving up in weight will help. I can’t remember the actualy issues but I think it affected stamina and weight management. I give him a pass and hope he does well.
eff it, I'm going derp
Wade wins big
Martellotti wins big
Pearsall defs Sherlock 2-1 even now in wrestleoffs 1-1
Lynch over Dylan Alton 14-10 coming back from 6-1 down even 1-1

Thanks for posting the results
I was slacking a bit. Quite a few shockers in there. Especially Pearsall over Sherlock I’d love to see what happened that match. Also it looks like Cael was right when he said he thought Jake would turn it up when the lights came on. Everyone said Fischer was right there with him the 10 4 final says otherwise. Not sure what to make of Ortega winning 2 1, sounds like the same old Ortega, but it’s tough to judge in wrestle offs when the guys know each other so well.
Kemerer Fischer was much closer than the score, at least listening to the audio. Kemerer scored in a few scrambles that easily could have gone Fischer’s way. Great match, considering the score. Lynch’s match was incredible to listen to and the crowd was really into it. Ortega, yeah same old no offense. Won with a riding time point, barely got the minute then, as usual was difficult to take down. Ortega is a good defensive wrestler, he still didn’t work anything of note as I listened. Pearsall/Sherlock was really back and forth but no one could score. Cody Sanderson really talked up Martellotti too. Said he is much better than expected and has worked his butt off to get better. Taylor was just impressive as were Ruth and Wright. Wade dominated too.
On a side, they said NCAA regs allow for the Nittany Lion Wrestling Club members to work out in the room now. That could be a great plus for this team, though I guess Anspach has been working alot with Wade anyhow, but it can’t hurt to have him in there.
eff it, I'm going derp
Yea
I listened to most of it, and as awesome a job as Jeff Byers does it’s still tough sometimes to get a feel for what happened. That’s what I meant when I said I would love to see the Sherlock match. Mostly because I don’t remember Pearsall being much of a scrambler last year. I do have to say though if your a wrestling fan and can’t get to a match listening to Jeff Byers is pretty intense. He does a great job conveying the excitement.
I did miss the last few matches so I’m pretty disappointed to hear about the Ortega match. Having seen Kemerer a decent amount when he was in high school I’d be careful making the assumption that Fischer was close to scoring that kid is insanely tough to score points on. Almost unbelievably so. That’s what worries me about him some he had uncanny ability to put himself into bad spots and still score points in high school and I’m not sure how that will work for him in college.
What did you think about the fact that there was 3000 on hand for the scrimmage. Pretty impressive for a thursday night, should get some good turnouts this year.
I had heard the rule change about club wrestlers but I’m still not sure I understand the reasoning behind it. It seems like it creates a huge unfair advantage for the bigger programs that have club teams. Which goes against everything they’ve done the past few years to even things out for the smaller programs to keep them going. It will be interesting to see how things play out with that. Definitely a huge boost for Penn State though.
There was a ton of scrambling in the Kemerer match and he did put himself in spots where Fischer could score but didn’t. They were saying that Fischer was getting the best of him in the room but when the lights are on, look out. 3000 for a scrimage, and they were into it. The Lynch match was loud. A lot of excitement. Hope I’ll be able to get tickets and make some matches this year. Never worried before about sell outs but that may be the case this year. Sounded like Pearsall/Sherlock wrestled the edge of the mat alot, just missing on points falling out of bounds.
