Penn State Volleyball Takes On Texas In Final Four
For Penn State fans, it's that time of year. It's time to put down those holiday decorations, procrastinate on the Christmas shopping and sit down to watch some volleyball.
Three-time defending national champion Penn State will take on Texas at 6:30 7:00 tonight in Kansas City, Missouri in a rematch of last year's national title game. The match will be broadcast on ESPN2.
Faces have changed for both teams since last year's epic, five set thriller in Tampa. For Penn State, gone are stars Alisha Glass and Megan Hodge. For Texas, star Destinee Hooker, a player who dominated against Penn State last season, has departed as well.
In their place, some new faces have risen into the fray. Freshman Deja McClendon has stepped in at outside hitter and impressed. She was recently named AVCA Freshman of the Year and a second team All-American. She finished second on the team to Blair Brown this season with 391 kills and a .328 kill percentage. Another freshman, middle hitter Katie Slay, led the Nittany Lions in blocks per set with 1.52. Finally, sophomore Kristin Carpenter has been sensational setting up teammates this year with a mind-blowing 1287 assists.
And of course, the established stars of the team have been great in leading Penn State to a 30-5 record so far. Senior outside hitter Blair Brown led the team with 491 kills and posted a .323 kill percentage. Fellow senior and middle hitter Arielle Wilson finished with a sensational .415 kill percentage and 316 kills. Both were recently named AVCA first team All-Americans.
In Penn State's last loss at Minnesota a few weeks ago, the Golden Gophers attacked the middle of the Penn State formation and libero Cathy Qualico. Look for Texas to try to exploit this weakness, if it is one at all, as the Horns try to get revenge for last season's loss in the championship game.
Use this as your open thread. We'll add another later if needed.

I watched the Championship game last year
with my wife who played volleyball. And that was one of the most exciting games I have watched in awhile. And I’m not just talking Volleyball….I mean all sports. The fact that they were down 0-2 and Texas was acting all cocky and like they had already won the match. And not to mention PSU’s top assistant leaving and coaching at Texas. It was just incredible to watch and was a great comeback. Hope they can keep their tournament run going, especially as the highest seeded team left.
I was drunk and becoming increasingly depressed until midway through the 5th
"Every player we have, someone-maybe a parent, a grandparent, someone-poured their soul into that young man. They are handing that young man off to us. They are giving us their treasure, and it's our job to make sure we give them back that young man intact and ready to face the world."

I watched it in a sports bar in Toledo, Ohio after attending a Toledo minor league hockey game.
So there’s that.
But I agree with GMac…that was one of the most exciting endings to a sporting match I’ve watched in a long time. It was even complete with almost punching an older couple in the bar who kept asking me to move, in the wide open bar with ~15 TVs, so they could watch whatever they were watching.

They don't have the Hooker
This game shouldn’t be as close – she dominated us, but nobody else did much except set for her.

I forget why, but I didn't tune in until after the second set
and I turned it on just figuring that even though we were likely going to lose, it was still my last chance to watch the volleyball team last year. I was pleasantly surprised by the outcome.

If I get on TV again
I hope I won’t be reprising my role as “sad lion fan” during the PSU-Iowa football game this year.

I was “sad lion fan” during the Rose Bowl telecast. I also made Deadspin . . .
Wahoo
just got the ok from Mike to order pizza so we can watch the match during dinner and not have a big cleanup. Just hope I have enough beer to go with it.
That is a proper party
I on the other hand have to DVR it so I can go to my son’s preschool christmas show, he’s a shepard. This is my third preschool christmas show in the last 6 years, I know all the songs by heart.
No one told you when to run, you missed the starting gun
We were there
and I’m ashamed to admit, but I was tempted to leave after the 2nd set. My wife insisted we stay and was very vocal with the “Point Penn State” after every Nittany Lion point. We had many Texas fans around us doing lots of the “point Texas” through the first 2 sets. However, there were several fans around us who cheered her on though the next 3 sets. It was a great experience in St. Pete. Lots of pep bands and very exciting the night of the semi-finals. We’re in Florida now and will be glued to the TV tonight.
Last year after we won there was no media coverage
Yeah I know, it’s WVB but it’d be nice if we got a four-peat to get a little coverage

We better win
My 50 minute commute took me nearly two hours due to the “huge” snowfall that totaled about an inch and wet roads. I don’t think I could handle having to deal with a loss on top of that. I can’t handle none of that 5 set nonsense either so if we could make this is a quick dirty 3 game sweep that would be swell.
I still have to try to sit through my niners playing a team with a pulse which means a likely blowout loss.

Good Start
It’s early but the passing looks very crisp so far. Carpenter’s had a few games where she’s really off that doesn’t look to be the case so far.
Wow, a TO already?
We’re coming out a lot more confident than we did earlier in the season. Glad to see how much this team has grown since the beginning of 2010.
Side story
I just remember that Salima Rockwell who was instrumental in our first two ncaa runs, is now assistant coach at Texas.
I'm turning this **** off RIGHT NOW.

He's too old
Can’t recruit. Doesn’t show up to practice, etc.
If we win the NC this year,
I can’t see us not winning 2 more in a row
A little bold
But next year should be really good. Carpenter has another year as setter under her belt. And we’ll get Dorton back from injury.
Slay, McClendon, Carpenter, Scott are all
huge talents. Even Quilico has shown flashes of being a very solid libero in the future. Along with getting Dorton back as you said, if they can continue to improve like they have this season, they’ll be very tough to beat come December.
Feel like she's been here for freakin' ever.

Man alive
Every time they highlight a PSU play she’s either a freshman or a sophomore. This team is going to dominate the next three years.
Yea the only concern
Is staying healthy. And leadership next year. Gonna be relying on a lot of still young players. Hopefully Carpenter and Dorton step into that leadership role.
My only fear is Libero
Our two best options (D’Errico and Quillico) are both seniors, and I haven’t seen anyone step up to be a solid replacement.
Yeah, it's so cool, and it's totally awesome!
I forgot about Longo
Carpenter just fits the Tortorello/Holehouse/D’Errico mold… that’s why I said it
John has a long moustache
Yea I see what your thinking
I just think that could be rough making another change but I don’t know if we have true setter on the bench. Plus personally I love when short people get blocks, makes me feel like I could play volleyball haha.
And Bonnie Bremner
Maybe you’re not old enough to remember her.

It'll probably be Longo
I don’t think we’ll change setters again.
Granted, Carpenter was initially a defensive specialist and has some pretty bad days, but I think she’s earned the spot moving forward.
I think Luongo (sp?)
Will step in. She’s been subbing in a lot the 2nd half of the year.
Perhaps
But I don’t feel as confident with her at this point as I was with D’Errico replacing Brown. I mean, I’m sure we’ll be fine because Russ Rose is awesome like that. But it’s the only place that, at this point, I see a serious drop-off for next year.
Yeah, it's so cool, and it's totally awesome!
Yea
There’s reason to be concerned. But there was plent concern with replacing Holehouse. We could also have a true freshman on the bench we don’t know about. Last year’s recruiting class was huge.
It takes 3 sets...
Loved the 1st set, but 25-13 counts as just 1 set, same as 29-27 does. Keep it up, ladies!
Yeah... Texas slept through their first set against Purdue as well
but we’re a lot better than Purdue, and they would have won had their setter (Hart) not gotten hurt

that is so infuriating
and not just the “in between top and bottom of the inning” middle, but while there is friggen action going on on the field. Not only should the managers be doing something else, but shouldn’t the broadcasters actually be broadcasting, you know, the game?

Yes. Should've said "during" the inning.

Yeah, well the wife and I really…
line drive down the right foul line
…like it, we’re also thinking of putting up a den…
2 runs score. 1 out in the top of the 7th
and maybe getting some landscaping done.
That’s fantastic. I hope you and the missus have a happy… HOME RUN!!! 2 MORE RUNS SCORE …time during all the renovations.

Eh I dunno
I respect what they’re doing. If they beat our record then so be it. Be pretty awesome if somehow our girls bball team was the one to end their streak though. Even though that would take a miracle.
Idk...
If we shoot like we’ve been shooting, we could probably run with them. That’s not to say we’d win but…I’d love a shot at them.

It's really a slap in the face
I don’t remember getting almost any coverage, let alone a special graphic and plugs for an upcoming game every 30 seconds. They keep talking about John Wooden, but c’mon. It’s women’s basketball. There isn’t the dearth of talent there like there was/is for men’s bball.
Anyone watching Salima Rockwell on the Texas bench?

I thought about that the other day.
Do you think we would have lost this year. I say maybe we have the Stanford loss at the beginning of the year. I’m not sure we lose in the Big Ten though.
I dunno
Most of our Big Ten loses were close. So you figure a kill instead of an error somewhere makes a big difference. Plus she’s more of a leader on the court.
I'll give you that
she’ll be a good replacement for D’Errico as an emotional leader

Katie Kabbes is back on the bench...
Dorton would’ve been an improvement… but there’s only so much a hitter can do
John has a long moustache
I feel bad for Katie
I remember when she came everyone thought she was the next big hitter for Penn St. Just hasn’t materialized for her yet. Hopefully she gets some quality time in next year.
I feel bad for her too
kinda like Walbridge, but Kabbes is better than Walbridge was… and Walbridge was really good
John has a long moustache
I forgot about her
But yea she had the same career. Guess that’s part of coming to a program like Penn State you know it’s going to be competitive. Impressive though that you never see too many players get upset. We did have that setter transfer to Nebraska a couple years ago but that’s it. Says something about Russ Rose and the atmosphere we have.
This set is much tighter

Placement deep in the court
and reading how they set up their offense. If a girl knows that she’s supposed to swing to the outside, Blair will put it behind her and the designated returner won’t be able to get there in time to make a play

well, the argument could be made that at best the 4 seed will win the championship
and so it didn’t really let the best team win.
Of course then I’d counter with, “uh, it is Penn State, of course it is the best team”

Like Shell said
You can’t look at the WVB seedings like you do the MBB seedings. Instead, they are like the tennis seedings, where the seeds represent the actual ranking overall, and not the sub-bracket rankings. Penn State’s No. 4 seed actually = a No. 1 seed in the NCAA MBB tournament.

I completely understand that
and in fact I like it this way more than the MBB seedings, since you get a better idea of the “true” rankings. My point was, people argue against a college football playoff saying that it decreases the chance of the “true” #1 team winning it all, and this is a case in point. Not only will the “true” #1 not be able to win it, but neither will the “true” #2 or even #3 team.
