Good luck K-New
Tough to argue with the decision, doesn’t look like he would get much playing time at QB here. Still feel like we will be missing out on a great athlete, though. Hope he finds what he is looking for!
I get the paper. I go to the bathroom. I take the paper in there and I scan it. I look at it. The first thing I do is look at who died. All right. Second thing I look at are headlines. Something that says, "Paterno is the Greatest," I read it. -JVP
Tough break
But we all saw this coming. Four quarterbacks is too many, so it’s good to free up a scholarship to go fill another position of need.
Best of luck to Kevin.
I feel bad
We all had so much hope when he signed, he really gave the fans this safety blanket that we weren’t headed for a disasterous 2010 season. Well, nothing really worked out the way it was planned, and I’ll continue to root for him no matter where he goes. I sincerely hope he ends up starting and playing QB at his next school.

He always seemed to be an incredibly classy guy
even when it was clear he wasn’t going to get any playing time at QB. Good luck to the kid.
Everything looks more important when written in gray italics.
Has there been any word yet as to where he might go?
I’d be interested to see where he lands and if he pans out at all or not.

Like the article said, the writing was on the wall from the season opener..
being passed over by a true frosh.
Honestly, I don’t want to open up a can of Jay Paterno worms, but I didn’t see much progression in Newsome’s throwing motion in his year here. Contrast to Clark, whom I remember had a pretty awful throwing motion in 2006 but still made strides.
Good luke New New, we hardly knew ye

Well it doesn't matter if you're Jay Paterno
or Jon Gruden, if the kid doesn’t have it, he doesn’t have it. And I’m not trying to say Newsome wouldn’t have ever been able to progress, but I think it was pretty clear he was never going to be slinging the ball around like Peyton or Brady. He was really a project player like DC was; a guy who would need 3 years or so on the bench before he could really progress to the starting QB level. Hopefully he goes somewhere where he can make that happen.

That was my point...
And I think Jay’s offensive philosophy with the spread HD requires much more than a running QB. I agree with this. Plus Joe admitted that this team has a lot of WR talent that they had to utilize. Could you imagine if we had to rely on the running game 70% of the time or more?

I think he would have been pretty good at Michigan
But the Snake Oil Salesman lied to Newsome and he left. I’d wonder if he went to a program that is struggling, like maybe Virginia or someplace like that, if they could build an offense around him to fully utilize all of his talents.

Yeah, but do you really think that he would want to sit out for an entire year? I can’t see that happening, I’m assuming that he’s going to go the Devlin route and try for immediate playing time at a D II school.

The what HD?
That “offense” lasted, what, four or five months? Now it’s just a punchline for when our (basically) pro-style offense can’t move the ball.

And I don't think that's Jay's fault, or that Jay is evil, etc.
But you’d have a hard time convincing me that we’re running anything other than a very basic offense with an occasional, disasterous end-around thrown in every 20 plays.

And?
We have a young quarterback who doesn’t pass well from the shotgun. The offense we’re running is the right one.

And...that is the right offense to run.
I’m saying that the Spread HD doesn’t actually exist.

Oh, fine. I don't think it ever did.
We just did more stuff from the shotgun plus some, uh, “exotic” formations in ’08.

Yeah I agree, this year the offense has been pretty bland.
IMO, we haven’t seen the True Spread HD since 2008. That year, Clark was a threat to handoff to a RB/WR (on end around), pass or run on any given snap. QB running got bottled up in 2009 since there was no serviceable backup, and i don’t think 2010’s QB’s have that skillset and/or playbook knowledge to run that.
No, I don’t think the Spread HD is some sort of white whale…it exists, but it hasn’t been around for a while. Hopefully it will be resurrected because that was a pretty damn good offense.

IMO
The Spread HD hinged on Curtis Drake much the same way it did on DWill in 2008. Add in the absence of a TE and we were looking at 2002’s playbook.

Probably why we saw so much Devon Smith (in place of the Drake)
I like the kid, but they went to him too much.
by whiteoutonly on Dec 21, 2010 4:14 PM EST up reply actions
what?
Devon Smith on 3rd and inches is the second most effective option, apparently. Right behind Green on 3rd and short.

Shh.
Don’t tell Galen or Jay, but there’s this thing called the Iso and these guys named Evan Royster, Joe Suhey, and Mike Zordich.
I hate it when we overthink on offense.

I don't have a problem having Devon in on 3rd and inches
As long as the game plan is for him to get the ball and be thrown over the line.

I really do wonder what teams would look like if that were legal.
I would bet that everyone would have at least one like 4’, 80 lb player, and someone who specialized in the shot put (or perhaps hammer throw?).

Even better
The gay kid is the kicker! Way to perpetuate stereotypes, eh? I think the football team started singing and dancing, too.
And my girlfriend wonders why I go check out the interwebz while she watches TV . . . .
That's true.
The QB depth has a big effect on all of this.
