The caption on this picture should be really interesting in March.

The 9 voters in favor of him returning next year must be Black Bear fans

I'm rarely in favor of mid-season firings.
I was willing to see how his team performed this year, but things are already looking bleak. Might as well try to get someone in to fire the guys up, and maybe make some noise in the Big Ten. Can’t get much worse than where they are at right now.
While I’m not typically in favor of mid-season coaching changes, if you know you’re gonna get rid of the guy, no use in keeping them around any longer than you have to.
The problem with mid season firings
Is that usually the pool of potential candidates is pretty slim. That’s why you might as well wait until the end of the season to make any moves.
very true
I guess the only plus in that scenario is that they can openly start the search right now.

I have inside information
And know for a fact that Russ Rose is not doing much for the rest of the Basketball season. Russ Rose for Mens Bball interim coach, the guy knows how to win.
No one told you when to run, you missed the starting gun
Or
You name an interim coach. Put Dan Earl in charge for the rest of the season. That will give them plenty of time to put out feelers and talk to people. And do some market research on what they should expect to pay the next guy.
Bingo
You’re firing him because the season is a bust anyway. Naming an interim coach from the staff gives you time to do a methodical coaching search so that you are ready to pounce right at the end of the season, rather than rushing it later while competing with other schools who may be snapping up coaches.
I guess I just don't see the point
I mean do you think the interim coach would make that much of a difference in terms of improving performance. In professional sports I would agree that it gives you more time to do research and get the right coach. But in college do you really want to send the seniors the message that the school quit on them. No matter how poorly they’re currently playing, the school should show them some support.
In college it’s important to remember to that schools have to give the right to talk to their current coaches in most instances. Not many schools will do that during the season.
It’s a horrible situation to be in either way. Coaching searches are never fun. Especially when it comes as a result of a firing.
But I do think it would benefit a program like Penn State to take their time and have conversations with people. And like Mudder said, if you wait until the end of the year when everyone else fires their coaches, you are going to be competing on the market. People want to make quick decisions, so you might get one hour to talk with a coach and convince him to come lead your program. If you’re competing against a school in the Big East, ACC, or even the Big Ten you have to think PSU is not as attractive. But if you can have multiple conversations with someone over a month or two to build a relationship it only helps your cause.
All of this being said, I think they will play out the season with Ed as the coach.
Or...
Give you a great excuse to hire Dan Earl when he beats a Hummel-less Purdue team,

Not gonna happen unless Johnson and/or Moore go down.
Purdue is still too good, in all likelihood, to lose to a team that plays like a trainwreck.
Vastly more memorable than Jon Crispin's UCLA career.

You of all people should see the logic in the premise.

I think I have stated in other threads that this may be the route to go.
Kanaskie or Earl, Earl is intriguing in a PSU sort of way. They say he is a tireless recruiter and just really knows the game. He played for what seemed like 10 yrs, though I think it was 6. I still remember him outplaying Steve Nash at a tournament in California his final year.

Research?
Only research they wool do is you must have been a penn state student at one time. I say bring back Christian Appleman!

I would like to see how the Big 10 schedule plays out
I know that the anger about Ed is not SOLELY based on yesterday’s loss, but for some reason that particular game has become the final straw for a lot of people, and I think you gotta take a step back. Upsets happen in college basketball even for the good teams. Illinois just lost to Illinois-Chicago, Tennessee to Oakland, etc. So for a team with historically poor shooting stretches like PSU has from time to time, a game like this is inevitable. Maybe the team rallies after the loss, if not, then yeah I probably agree with firing Ed at the end of the season. The team had a lot of adversity the year that Cornley and Claxton were hurt and were basically all freshmen and they turned the team in the right direction.
People think that firing Ed is the simple solution because maybe we can’t get any worse. I totally disagree about that. Considering we are losing 80% of our starting lineup (and maybe even a higher % of points) next season, no coach in their right mind would want to come here. If you remember seasons like 2002, 2003, 2004, etc., you know it can get much worse. If there is a bigger name or someone that has a pedigree that we have to take a chance on, I would be for that. But lets see how things go from here instead of bringing out the pitchforks after this loss.
And it seems to be the consensus that Jerry Dunn was the worst coach in the world, but I just don’t see it. Like it or not, he was at the helm for the most successful stretch in PSU basketball history, and if you are not going to him any credit for making a Sweet 16 run or some nice NIT runs (which we would all KILL for right now), then that’s sad. Every coach who takes a job is getting the former coaches’ players and it’s what you do with them is what counts. I will agree that the program was in awful shape when he left, but PSU basketball is never going to be a “factory” and is going to have its bad stretches. I think Parkhill had a better overall record – but Dunn did it in the Big 10 – not playing St Bonaventure twice a year.
as you said, the game wasn't the sole reason
but this season was already seeming like a disappointment, and there’s eventually a load that no camel’s back can bear.

Will it matter?
I mean, you know, I’d come to Penn State for $700k a year. But a coach who can recruit Big Ten skill level players?
THIS is what the next coach has to be about. I love the guys on this team
but the truth of the matter is after Battle and Brooks, how many would be on other Big Ten rosters. Buie and maybe Bowman and Marshall, DJ maybe. They are great group of kids that with a different coach, may be a lot better. I really got turned off last night sitting right behind the bench.

They missed it by a year
And I wanted Ed to coach this year, but it almost worked out perfectly for Steve Donahue. Dude can coach, and more importantly has excellent relationships with the Philadelphia high schools. Instead, yet another Big East school has Philly ties, which is never a good thing for Penn State.
