A few weeks ago I posed the question who would take over the reigns when JoePa is gone. We got some interesting answers. As we know, JoePa will be here in the 2011. But I honestly can't imagine he would be still coaching past 2012 or 2013. I am not looking forward to that day, and I will cry like a baby once it comes. But who knows, he could coach well into 2020, 2030 2040....
I bring up the topic of Jon Gruden because his name has been swirling in the head coach rumors for a couple of schools, namely Miami. And just today, someone on PennLive (I know, I went there) said that Gruden could be a good fit. At first I passed it off as usual PL garbage, but then I gave it some thought.
Gruden runs a very tight ship. His teams are disciplined and well prepared. Not to mention he has a fiery personality which shows through his players. He is also still young (47) and has shown success coaching at the highest levels. The PL article was about how JG could re-ignite the football in Happy Valley and take it to the next level.
However, I am not sure Gruden would be a good fit. He was inconsistent as a head coach and often times "inherited" good players. Some say he is overrated as a head coach. He has never held a meaningful position in college coaching (he was an assistant for 4 years before he went to the NFL) and his intense style might be too much for some 19 and 20 year olds. But who knows, he may have the make-up to be a good college coach all along and just never gave it a shot. Of course we would have to shell out BIG bucks to have him here, something we are probably not willing to do.
I am not here to start rumors or muckrake, but I am simply kicking that out there for the BSD community to talk about in these long post season days. And lets throw Bill Cowher into the conversation while we are here.
