JAYPA versus URBAN LEGEND
Thinking deep thoughts .......at the end of February when PSU Basketball is thankfully euthanized before March Madness begins,........one's mind wanders to the Combine, and two quarterbacks who are not being touted very highly when it comes to attempting to become Professinals......Daryll Clark and Tim Tebow.
Which school did a better job developing their qb?
Is it possible that Penn State Quarteback Coach Jay Paterno has done a better job developing Daryll Clark than Urban Meyer has done with Tim Tebow? The view from Boalsburg says that Penn State has done the better job, by a bunch........ Right Arm! .
Tim Tebow was the most notorious Quarterback to come out of High School ever.,.. with ESPN broadcasting his Florida high school game with some school from Bama when Tim was a senior. Number One Prospect in this Generation!
Urban Meyer had this guy for four years, ( Note not one unbeaten season, but that is another rant.) and at the end of the day, Tebow has not progressed one iota. He does not know the proper way to throw a football! He does not have the ability to take a snap from center. He can't drop back and ..... your get the picture. The poor bastard is now trying to learn the mechanics of throwing during the last few weeks, as if the prospect of him ever having to learn the mechanics of quarteback has just occured to him. I'm no Gator fan, but this provokes the same response in my gut as hearing that JoePa was making $500,000 per year. Vomit. What a waste of talent and time.
On the other hand, we have Daryll Clark, who was not highly touted, coming out as the Big Ten MVP and being given at least a puncher's chance at going pro as a late round pick. Clark has learned to play quarterback, has decent technique, has a penchant for throwing first, and running only as a last resort, and definitely is a lot better off for going to PSU.
I say that I am proud of the job that Daryll Clark did in learning the job, and executing the game plan with passing first in mind. This has been a thrill to watch, and has shown that the coaching staff has not only changed the game plan, but also has the ability to coach the athlete with year to year improvement.
I'm hoping that PSU is now looking forward to regular, constant good quarteback play and many great years, with the talent now on board being handled by a staff that is, at the very least, better than Florida at developing quartebacks.
For The Glory.

Spot on.
What bothers me more is that Tebow learning a new throwing style was news. How many more years will Tebow have ESPN turning and coughing?

I think the Nittany Nation is beginnig to realize something
JayPa wasn’t the horrible coach that we thought he was. I think he was improperly judged because of 2 things: 1. Mills was hurt at the end of his college career and we had few weapons to throw the ball to at WR. 2. Morelli – you can lead a horse to water but you can’t make him drink.
Lets see how JayPa does with Newsome, Jones, and Bolden before we annoint him the next great QB Coach as well.
what I'm willing to bet
If we had the pistol formation, nintendo 12, TexasTechMizzou style offense Morelli may have been a good college QB. If you take away all the fundamentals of becoming a real quarterback, and simply focus on quick throws, he may have been alright.

If we only threw outs, perhaps.

I heard your call to Cory Giger's show the other day
On this subject. I think you raise a fair point. I’m also impressed that you are able to stomach having a conversation with Cory Giger.

Tebow will be a televangelist in a few years anyway, this football thing is all ancillary to that eventual career path. The bottom line is Urban doesn’t care about how his players do in the NFL, he’s there to win college football games. Forcing Tebow to play the position like a real quarterback would have exposed his weaknesses, and made him less effective.

I think they played with the best Tebow they had.
He certainly wasn’t going to be a pro-style QB, and if he had tried to switch in college, they may not have been as successful. But I agree with your career outlook for Tim Secondcoming.

Nothing wrong with using his popularity to start a ministry
By all accounts Tebow is a genuinely good person and a true human being. If he’s true to his faith then he’d be a great person to start a ministry.

I don't think millzners said anything that said there was anything wrong with that.

I hope Tebow can catch a ball and throw a block
Otherwise he’s going to make a lousy tight end in the league.

I'm no JayPa basher...
…but why are we comparing Jay Paterno to Urban Meyer?
JayPa is a QB coach, Meyer is a head coach. Wouldn’t it make more sense to compare him to UF’s QB coach (unless they don’t have one)?
We’re not comparing the amount of MNC’s Urban won to what JayPa won, after all.
That said, JayPa is a better coach than people make him out to be, but truthfully I’d rather see him at OC than QB coach. I think he’s better from an X’s and O’s perspective…

Nice analysis
but let’s not forget the craptitude that is high school football rankings.
Maybe Tebow was like Morelli, highly rated, but not that good at playing QB, but unlike Morelli in that he could run very powerfully. If you are the coach, do you make do with what you have, or do you try to force something that isn’t (like DickRod at Michigan)?
Of course, there’s also the possibility that Tebow could have been the second coming of Peyton Manning given the proper coaching…
Well, say what you want about his shitty motion...
And yes, it is shitty. But the guy still completed passes left, right and center nearly at will. If he had been given proper coaching his freshman and sophomore years he would have been in a much better position to succeed in this draft. And really, with the level of talent (and the overall reliance on Tebow running anyway) Florida probably would have had the same record even with him performing slightly worse for a year or two while he adjusted.
I love to bash Tebow as much as the next guy (especially from being from Florida) but he’s a damn good football player, even if he isn’t a damn good throwing QB, but I don’t think it’s ever been from a lack of potential.
just to clarify
I wasn’t trying to be sarcastic with my “possibility he could have been the second coming of Peyton Manning given the proper coaching”
was just saying it isn’t always easy to tell if the player just never developed because of their own shortcomings or the shortcomings of the coaches around him.
I almost compare Tebow to all those highly touted kids in HS who dominate because they’re just athletically superior to the majority of their opponents, but can’t really make it at the next level because they never took the time or effort to actually develop their skills.

Tebow is one of the good guys in CFB, nothing but good things to say about the kid
Running UF’s version of the spread was not designed to develop him as a passer, but the dude won a ton of games and did it the right way.
Back on topic – I think JayPa is very god and no one could have really helped qb14
I think we rip him so much because of the media saturation
But really this is what I think about Tebow and I hope you are a decent enough person to admit this even if you are too chicken shit to do it on a message board.
The guy has handled himself with class, dignity, and respect.
As a father he is the type of guy I want my son to grow into, and my daughter to date. Can there be any higher praise than that?

People love to rip Tebow because he is better than they are at life.
My DI always said, doing the right thing all the time will cause many to resent you.
True
I’d gladly have a QB with Tebow’s record playing at Penn State. Pro success for Penn State players is a bonus, not the goal.

JFB wasn't talking about Tebow as a person.
And if he was “ripping” on anybody, it would be Urban Meyer.

My post wasn't aimed at JFB
I think overall as a community on this blog we are overly critical of a genuinely good guy. That is all, I happen to like what the kid does with his gifts. I wish sometimes he wouldn’t push his religion on you as much, but at the same time it is obvious his religion is what makes him tick. So at least he isn’t being a fake.

I'm still not understanding...
…why we’re comparing PSU’s QB coach to UF’s head coach, in terms of player development. Anyone? Am I the only one thinking this is a fundamental flaw, or am I just reading too much into it?

I think it's just because
Tebow and Meyer have had such a close relationship, there’s the general feeling that Tebow is Meyer’s and nobody else’s. One of Meyer’s great (in perception at least) accomplishments from Utah was molding Alex Smith into a #1 overall pick, and Tebow kind of cemented Meyer’s reputation as a developer of QBs. Otherwise a suspect comparison, I’ll grant you that.
Good point
The have a specified QB coach, who I have seen firsthand working with Tebow. Meyer did hardly anything with Tebow in the 4 practices I watched.
