SIGNING DAY OPEN THREAD

The Hat Selection Game...Turning 18 Year Old Punks into 18 Year Old Collegiate Punks

There's not much left for PSU to be hopeful for in this class. We've got 20 stellar recruits, and while we may still have our hat in some of these kids bags, I'm not holding my breath that anyone will pick PSU today. Really, the only names to keep an eye on are Michael Thornton (rumored to announce at 10 am) and Keenan Allen (rumored to announce at 9 am).

Other than that, sit back, relax, and watch the primadonna kids that do the Collegiate Hat Dance put on a show. Or, you know, go about your normal Wednesday and don't really care about Signing Day. Both will probably get you to the same place - regular apathy at the end of the day.

Star-divide

Follow HERE for national signing news, or HERE for Penn State faxes; I will try to update the post each time a fax comes in, but I've got a life, so there's that. ESPNU is running an all-day telecast, so if you've got time to kill during the day, head on over and see what recruit is going to put on a stupid hat this year.

FIRST EDIT: 4 remaining (waiting on Norwood, Bolden, Kolb, Pulliam)

USC is already making moves

Poached a guy from UT (Ambles was really all set to follow Ol’ Lane anyway)
Another 3* athlete (Hayes Pullard) dropped UCLA for USC
And CB Nickell Robey dropped UGA for USC

Not sure, but I would assume so. LOI is really a meaningless piece of paper. The only teeth it has forbids contact with signed LOI.

I think that’s different. Early enrollees don’t sign LOIs, going to class is signing an LOI. Thus not going to class is not signing.

My only concern today

Is that Bolden goes somewhere else, not that there’s been any sort of smoke to that idea. But of the four outstanding LOI’s, his would worry me the most.

by Blokee on Feb 3, 2010 9:22 AM EST up reply actions

Bolden situation is shaky...

The kid wants to play…and feels he’s at a disadvantage going to Penn State with Newsome already having a year, and Jones enrolling early. I think Jones is vastly over-rated, but that is just my opinion. He is similar to Morelli…with a tad more mobility.

by PSUFalcon on Feb 3, 2010 9:36 AM EST up reply actions

Except Jones threw a lot in high school

Morelli only threw the ball six or seven times per game, they were a run-first offense.

Junny, you forgot to add this:
But if you feel like you need to rip the coaches a new one to make yourself feel better, here are your standard talking points.

•If only Joe had made an in house visit we could have got him.
•We’ll never recruit like the big boys as long as Joe Paterno is our coach.
•I blame Jay Paterno. I don’t know why, but I’m sure this is his fault somehow.
•Sue should have gone with the chocolate chip instead of the oatmeal raisin cookies
•I don’t blame him. After watching the Rose Bowl I wouldn’t want to play for our crappy defense either.
•We should be recruiting in Florida and Texas more to get some of that OMG ESSSS EEEEE SEEEEE SPEED
And for those of you who choose to move on past these things and not get caught up in the negativity, here are your talking points

•He wasn’t Penn State material anyway
•Maybe he had academic problems and the staff backed off of him
•Now that I look at his tape again, he’s not that good
•I always thought he was overrated
•We’re loaded with talent. We don’t need him.
•If he wants to go play for a lousy no-class school like Rutgers or Florida we don’t want him anyway.

His half-brother isn’t a terrible QB, he played quite a bit at UB this year. He lit up Pitt for 400 yards (although UB was getting blown out, so that may be a lot of garbage yards)

The Maginot Line didn’t fail, the French defensive strategy itself failed – by ignoring the Ardennes.

Right, of course:

“Fixed fortifications are momuments to stupidity” as Patton said, but the line itself may have worked long enough for the French to mobillize and counterattack with British support.

Because Naval Power

existed in battleships, destroyers and the like. Plus he took advice of the likes of a Churchill (a naval hardon that I love, save for Gallipoli). Carriers were useful only in the event of an invasion of a foreign land. With natural maritime borders, there was little worry of an airstrike from afar. Hence, they did not foresee an air battle over open water.

My argument is merely that he knew the power of planes, but was unaware that they could be used AGAINST us on our own soil to such detriment

Only Lindy could navigate that

lindy was more sarcasm

My final comment on this is that while I agree that air power of the US pre 1940 was embarrasingly non existant, I believe it is not because they did not believe it was a useful technology.

I think it had more to do with the natural maritime borders of the Pacific and Atlantic, and thier firm belief that any attack on our shores would be naval, rather than from above. Planes, in their estimation (and this is speculation) were useful only for an invasion. The threat of an air invasion from Europe was non existant because of their scuffle, and from Asia was almost laughable because of the sheer size of the Pacific . I think we just got too complacent in our natural defesnes when it came to air.

I will walk away with that, as I can see I am outnumbered and in way over my head on the subject of which I am admittedly not as well read as you guys.

because of our complacency

or because we thought airplances were a fad? I have a hard time believing we simply dismissed airpower for any reason other then we did not feel we needed it at the time. I cant imagine we found it to be a useless technology or that air power was not an important implement of war.

Having said that, you have read the book so i will defer to you at this point and I will defintely take a look at that

Bradley claims, and uses many examples

that our military leaders (senate committee members included) we reluctant to admit that their status quo was becoming dated. That coupled with the fact that most flyers were seen as eccentrics, led to an almost complete marginalization of the flying program in the US military.

by JerseyPSUfan on Feb 3, 2010 10:08 AM EST up reply actions

probably true

Im not a conspiracy theorist. But you have to remember that WWI ended just 22 or so years earlier and alot of people were still licking their wounds. There was much apathy towards “Europe’s War”.

While maybe he didnt see it coming from day 1, he did little to stop it when he did discover the attack plan, and i think it could be argued there was a legitimate reason why he would allow it. Keep in mind, D-Day was a collateral damage assault. It was a plan where they knew alot of soldiers would be casualties right off the bat. Is it impossible to believe that this ideology was in place 3 years prior?

by swiggy04 on Feb 3, 2010 10:23 AM EST up reply actions

Read Flyboys by James Bradely

It pretty much lays out the story of air forces in the US prior to WWII.

It was damn near impossible to get adequate funding in the military because the leadership did not see the importance of it, even after several attempts.

Also it took Pearl Harbor to get our Gov’t to finance more carriers, and new planes.

The line itself wasn't the problem.

It was their failure to fully understand the strategic successes/failures of the previous war or to learn from the German tactics the Germans had used on their doorstep only months prior.

Theirs was a failure of command, not of fixed fortifications. Hell, the Poles held out longer using basic horse-mounted cavalry against the entire Wehrmacht. If the French command had been able to adapt… they still woulda lost but it might not have been such a historic rout.

Working hard today, got my nose in some biz nass.

Me being drunk last night was a myth btw; was having too much fun to invalidate its momentum. FwhateverIW, was stone cold sober—no intoxicants whatsoever. Unless you count BSDCrack. Was totally high on that.

That said, I’ll be glad to still play along. Especially given your Xtranormal development work.

That's got Ol' Lane written all over it.

If someone on our staff did something like that I’d want to punch them in the throat.

The yearly schollie is different. For example, McGloin only got his because someone else didn’t use theirs. I wouldn’t be as upset if we took his back. But when you promise a PJ or Redd a schollie, you give it to them for the life of their collegiate career.

this year's ranking - #4/5 in average rating

Keep in mind that many of the schools are ranked higher than us simply because they have more scholarships to give out. If you look at the average rating of our class, we are #4 on Scout.com and #5 on Rivals. Not bad at all.
