Hop aboard the Ed DeChellis Bus
From ESPN's Pat Forde in this week's Forde Minutes:

Coach Who Should Take The Bus To Work This Week
Ed DeChellis (39) of Penn State. He presided over the Nittany Lions' 11th straight loss Saturday, at home against Minnesota, to stay winless in the Big Ten. The earnest young folks at Penn State's Daily Collegian ran a story this week under the hopeful headline, "Losing brings team closer." The Minutes suspects that the Nittany Lions have had all the closeness they can stand.

I think I figured out why I don't really feel the need to call for ED's head
It would be like if the soccer team started sucking and losing a lot, I wouldn’t really be moved to call for the coach’s head. Maybe I really just am not that big of a basketball fan, and so I personally don’t really care enough to want to fire someone.
“JNitt,” you might say, “basketball is a very popular sport, and so we should be competitive in it.”
I would then reply, “yes, but so is soccer, worldwide, but it still doesn’t make me passionate about it.” Just because basketball is big in this country, it really wasn’t that big (outside of bandwagoners) at PSU, and I just never got that into it.
Wow
Look at all those original thoughts.
Mad copy and paste skills.

I’m getting sick of the act. I mean, if he’s a Wisky basketball fan, doesn’t that technically make this stuff trolling whether he roots for the football team or not?
God Created the World Out Of Nothing, Paterno Built A National Superpower On Cow Fields...
Pretty much
and even if he does really care about the team, the vitriolic way he says everything is trolling anyway.
Yeah that's the worst part
If he wants Ed fired, I can deal with that, but just pulling someone else’s content into a fan post to make him look bad is kinda lame. Like I give a rats ass what Pat Forde thinks of the Penn State basketball program?

I don't care if one wants Ed fired.
But I cringe whenever someone posts here like this is freaking PennLive.

You guys have NittanyBadger,
we over at BHGP have PantherHawk. There seems to be some correlation between them.

PantherHawk was a freaking tool.
Every single post he wrote or close to it showed nothing but pure, stupid, obsession for the Minnesota “Goofers”. Plus, he posted full articles without linking. All you have to do is say “Gophers” and he’ll show up and post a stupid, troll-like rant.

He travels from college campus to college campus for 9 months a year and is paid well to write his opinion on the college sports scene.
But go ahead, dismiss him. You comment, unpaid, for 5,840 hours a year. Clearly, your obessions (like with Penn Live…still don’t know or care what it even is!…or Skins4Life) and inside jokes bring much more value to a Penn State basketball discussion.
by NittanyBadger on Feb 9, 2010 8:05 PM EST up reply actions
Yeah, I totally agree
the guy who covers little bits and pieces from a multitude of colleges and sports across the country is going to be way more knowledgeable about a specific program than the fans who care about it and pay attention to just that one. owait
+1
Forde has no idea what he’s talking about. Curley is the one who should be taking the bus.

I didn't know Pat Forde commented here.
Anyhoo, you don’t know what PennLive is? Funny, since you comment exactly like the doucheabags [that’s an inside joke, if you didn’t know] that infest that joint. You’re exactly four or five steps away from the people who start racist flame wars.

Success beyond year 8
The tragedy is that the wretched state of the Penn State basketball program lets Penn State fans get dissed like they are front runners. The vast majority of us are not.
It was evident when bus loads of students travelled to Atlanta in 2001 for a Sweet 16 weekend that Nits had little chance of advancing from. (The PSU turn-out was so great it drew public and private admiration from MSU’s Tom Izzo)
NIT mania swept Nittany Nation away last year, while most schools yawn at the NIT.
Sadly, the administration doesn’t want to acknowledge that people would and should care, because its more convenient for never-left-State-College-Curley to let his buddy DeChellis stay employed. And a segment of the “fan” base (a seemingly growing segment at BSD), allows the adminstration to get away with this and goes to great and absurd lengths (see “Soccer” post by JNitt) to justify why this coach should get an 8th year.
Can anyone name the last coach in a major conference who failed to make the tournament for 7 years who was given an 8th year and eventually led the program to sustained success? (Bonus: Name a coach who started 0-11 in conference play in his 7th season, after 6 non-NCAA tournament seasons, and was given an 8th season that led to sustained success)
Rambler, you’ve clearly got time on your hands, I’m looking forward to see you name the multitude of coaches and programs that fit this bill.
OK You're Nuts
I’ve been beating Curley like a drum since Selection Sunday last year, and I don’t think there’s a person here who is pleased with how he treats the basketball program. No one here enables or “allows” him anything.
But the truth is, he runs probably the best overall athletic department in the Big 10 and has a profitably basketball program. That’s all the Board of Trustees and Spanier cares about, not winning. It’s how many black 0s he gets on the bottom line, and I’d challenge you to find 10 ADs out there who do it better than Curley does.
So no matter how much or how many of us bitch and moan, it isn’t going to change a damn thing. Curley ain’t going anywhere, and neither are his policies, so whether Ed Dechellis is the coach or not, things aren’t going to get dramatically better.
Accept it.
No one here thinks Ed is dong an acceptable job in comparison to other schools in the league. No one. But that doesn’t mean firing him is going to make things any better. You can keep piling on Ed Dechellis, and we’re just going to keep laughing at you because frankly, we could care less who the coach is. We’re gonna suck as long as the people above Ed run the show as they currently do.
Now please. Shut up.
God Created the World Out Of Nothing, Paterno Built A National Superpower On Cow Fields...
Oh. My. God.
I’d challenge you to find 10 ADs out there who do it better than Curley does
Someone please check on fugi, I sense a great disturbance in the force. lol
Definitely not in character
but I actually agree, which is why I’m torn on Curley. Other than basketball, he runs a pretty good ship.

Second verse, same as the first!
The reason we’re tired of your (and all similar posts) is that they’re no longer adding value. Every now and then, a name or two pops up. But as it is, these are just rants. And the same rants, time and time again. To go one step further, these posts just prop up the poster as this beacon of hope – as though the rest of us are just blind to what else is possible.
We know what’s possible. We also know what’s likely to happen. Instead of writing the same old story of how the team isn’t winning, and placing the blame on the shoulders of the coach, we like to write about other areas – the good, the bad, the ugly. We try to find value in what we have in front of us – not just the wild projections of “What would happen if…” News is perishable, and the “FIRE ED” story got thrown out weeks ago.

Why do you expect anyone to respond to you? Your post is filled with calling disagreement “absurd”, chiding “keep Ed” peopleas fake fans, chiding me for posting too often (are you jealous or something?), demanding I answer non-sequiturs that add nothing to any form of discussion, and posting the same thing you’ve always posted

ol' Zeke had no love for Rambler
But he will never earn the title of “the least knowledgeable poster here, by far”
Pitt currently has both a better football and basketball team than Michigan.
While I'm not going to go through and find what coaches meet your criteria
if you really want I can go and list various programs in similar situations as Penn State who, like Penn State, continue to be mediocre in basketball no matter who the coach is.
Just to name a few:
Rutgers
Nebraska
Colorado (their most recent hire, their most expensive coach ever, has compiled an amazing 31-55 record since beginning)
Oregon State
by The JuggerNitt on Feb 9, 2010 9:32 PM EST up reply actions
Some others
Baylor (oh wait maybe this year they will make it), NW, Auburn, Alabama, Iowa State. The list goes on.
Benchmarking
If these are the schools you wish Penn State to benchmark itself against, then so be it. Curley and DeChellis are the right guys for the job.
I don’t believe Penn State should accept a mediocre basketball program. The university shows tremendous support for its athletic teams and Spring semesters in Happy Valley are LOOOOONG. Why not produce a competitive program that generates excitement and puts an ass or two in the upper level and puts the black curtains in storage?
Rather than benchmarking against the Rutgers, Nebraskas, Auburns, and Alabamas of the world, I’d much rather see Penn State strive to be a program that consistently fields nationally competitive teams in both Football and Men’s Basketball.
Such as:
Texas
Oklahoma
Florida
Ohio State
Wisconsin
(I panic at the notion of Pitt or West Virginia ever reaching this level, but they’re there in basketball and not far off in football)
If the Curley/DeChellis combo can get us there, great. However there is no record of a coach having a .440 winning percentage over 6 years, hitting rock bottom in year 7, and then rebounding or sustained success.
But that’s a tired a conversation, what we should really be looking forward to is breaking down “the good, the bad, and the ugly” after Saturday’s loss to Michigan State. Can’t wait!

of course I wish we were competitive in both football and men's basketball
but we’re not, never were, and won’t be any time soon, whether or not we fire ED.
As for being compared to Nebraska and Alabama…I don’t really mind that at all (but I admittedly am a much bigger football fan than basketball fan)
