Around SBN: How The Kings Beat The Coyotes: Lather, Rinse, Repeat

Mostly just love for JoePa, but the end is where is gets interesting. JoePa does leave, it really sounds like they are going to stay inhouse for new coach...

"If we go outside to hire a coach, we know what Mack Brown of Texas makes [$5.1 million] and we know what Nick Saban [$4.7 million] of Alabama makes," Kaluza said. "So, is that where we'll need to be? Probably. And that figure doesn't even include the assistant coaches.

"If we stay inside and [defensive coordinator] Tom Bradley is the new coach, then we can probably keep things a little closer to where we are now."

Kaluza said Paterno rarely has used the university's jet for recruiting purposes, but that could change, too, if the university hires a coach from the outside.

"If a new coach comes in, he's going to want to be on the university jet all the time, going here and going there to see these high school recruits play their games," Kaluza said. "Every time he hops on that university jet, it's going to be another $6,000 or $7,000."

On the other hand

the price tag could be one way of weeding out “non-Penn State guys”, and would help assure we’re getting someone who actually cares about the job, and not just making the $$$ and the fame.

great point

the university can use that as their bargaining chip during the hiring process: “look, LJ Sr. is willing to work for Wendy’s gift cards, so by virtue of that we’re going to low ball this offer. take it or leave it.”

Yea, great point

- though I am sure it shall be TB (with a nice promo for LJ, Sr.) … this is a place for a PSU MAN and a PSU MAN ONLY!!!

Agree.

Odds on favorite is TB with LJSr jumping to DC. However, they will definitely look outside the program, both to ensure their choice is right, and to placate any boosters that don’t like TB.

Junny, I hear ya / but then again...

I don’t…

Why even stir up the contraversey? Yes, they are grown men, that reportedly hug, and therefore they should ‘understand’ reviewing outside the program…but, BUT – to me – this is akin to NFL teams interview process for a minority coach, IF they already know whom they want.

PSU has two ideal candidates in house that MANY other D1 teams would want to snap-up…so this future process for PSU is a waste of time and resources AND potentially rub someone the wrong way. Just a matter of opinion; and YES I am a blue kool-aid drinking, blue tinted-shade wear’n, ex 7 – one – 7 bear’n homer…

Wasn't the whole STEP plan supposed to provide an extra few million a year?

I always assumed it was adding extra revenue for the eventual Paterno successor.

Mostly rising non-rev sport costs, I thought.

Remember they have to stay self funded.

There was also the issue of “why not?”, because similar programs exist at most of our peer-programs.

I know about your diabolical plan.
