1987 Fiesta Bowl - Complete Game
Penn State vs. Miami (Fl.) - 1 of 38 (via gossett2006)
I stumbled across one of the greatest games in Penn State history on YouTube. It's the entire 1987 Fiesta Bowl, where Penn State upset Miami 14 - 10 to win the national championship, in 38 easy installments. (Mouse over the video and click on the title to get to the next part of the game.) Heisman winner Vinnie Testaverde was picked off by the Nittany Lions 5 times, while Penn State QB John Shaffer was just good enough to win.
This brings back great memories of before I was born.

I have the game on cassett back home
I watched it over the break. It was a great idea. I wasn’t even born and I still got goosebumps when Giftopolous intercepted that pass.
Oh and Michael Irvin sucks.

I wore out my dad's old VHS of the game by age 12.
I was going to buy a dvd copy, but it didn’t feel right. That vhs essentially forged my fandom.

My dad has it taped from the live broadcast on VHS, which we watch every other year
But I, being of a more savvy generation, purchased the full-length game on DVD. You can still probably buy it, I found it by goggling it, and it was only like $20.

yeah, I bought it from I think the campus bookstore or SBS online
I forget which…someone posted the link to it for me last year when I couldn’t find a copy online anywhere else (a bunch of places advertise it as being for sale, but then come up out of stock).

I give it two minutes until it's taken down to copyright claims.

I used to have a party
Where we watched the game, and drank Hurricane’s. It wasn’t very popular in Pittsburgh though, so I had to stop it.
Pitt currently has both a better football and basketball team than Michigan.
What's really obvious
when you watch the entire game is that the hated “U” dominated, I repeat, dominated the play except on the crucial plays that won the game for PSU…I sweat bullets throughout and still is one of the great PSU FB games.
Show of hands:
Who here DOESN’T have this game on DVD/VHS?

Holy crap!
He has the beatdown of ’86 Bama too! This guy is awesome!

Ooop, nevermind.
It’s the 1985 game, which was still pretty awesome.

I bought the DVD a couple of years ago
and when I re-watched it, all the memories of watching it the first time in 1987 came back, I was 13 at the time. I remember how in ‘87, that I thought at that time we were going to lose that game like 45-0, it looked so bad early in the game. But in ’87 I didn’t really know who Michael Irvin was, and upon re-watching it, it was fun to see him get decked several times, fumbling, and generally being a non-factor. The “U”? Ha. Not that night. It was also fun watching the recent ESPN special on the “U” and everyone involved bemoaning the loss.

Yeah that was pretty great seeing jimmy johnson and all the rest pretty salty about that game.
here’s a nice paragraph from wikipedia:
Johnson developed the Hurricanes into a football program came to be known as “The Decade of Dominance.” In his five years at Miami, Johnson compiled a 52–9 record, appeared in five New Year’s Day bowl games, winning one national championship (1987) and losing one to the Penn State Nittany Lions (1986).
that’s right.
But that movie actually made me like the U a little bit. It’s almost like, when they finally stopped the racism, all of a sudden the local athletes from Miami all decided the stay and they just whupped people’s ass. It started as a cool story. Then they got a little bit out of control. The rivalries they have down here are insane hatred. Of course we kept them in check though.

"Charlie, there's no question that at this point in time, Vinny Testaverde is frustrated and confused."

How the Bucs
could have drafted Testaverde #1 overall in 87 is mind-boggling. He isn’t a #1 overall QB like Elway, Bradshaw, or Manning. That game should have had the red flags a-buzzing, but they didn’t.
They were the Yucs back then, though, so it isn’t too surprising. They should have taken one of Testaverde’s college teammates, Jerome Brown or Alonzo Highsmith, with that pick.
And, Showtime, I agree about the U movie. It did make them likeable. I don’t hate them that much anymore(Ohio State and Michigan fill my hate meter, as well as Florida). The part that I remember about that was before the 86 OU game at the coin toss. I wish that a team like that was around to taunt the 90’s Huskers or Gators at the coin toss when those teams had Lawrence Phillips and Danny Wuerffel. I hated those teams and players. Jerome Brown would have put a beatdown on both of those punks.
Sorry. Thanks but no thanks on the taunting part.
Penn State would have beaten Nebraska in ‘94 and we wouldn’t have had to call Brian Bosworth Lawrence Phillios at 3 in the morning.

I own the DVD...
and watch it at least once a year. It’s amazing how “fast” the game is compared to today. Seemed like at lot less commercials and dead time between plays. However, the players, even the Miami players, look painfully slow.
Never mistake effort for achievement.

The SEC
had not yet invented speed. It was not until the mid-90s when Steve Spurrier’s Florida Gators rose to prominence that speed was developed. Today, in recognition of the SECs grounbreaking work in the field of running fast, the terms SEC speed is often used to describe any form of rapid locomotion.
Additionally, the SEC had not yet turned football into uber big business, so interminable commercial breaks were not necessary. On a serious note, it might be interesting to speculate on speed of play vs. game speed. Players can’t sprint as fast as often if they’re not given as many breaks between plays.
This was the first PSU game I ever watched.
I was living in Virigina Beach and DJ Dozier was the hometown hero even before this game. Everyone I knew was watching and cheering on Penn State. I had no idea then that almost six years later I would become a Penn Stater.
For the glory
My Christmas present to my Dad this year (which was late btw, thanks gopsusports.com!)
Was both national championship games on DVD. We watched the Sugar Bowl with him, but we never got around to watching the Fiesta Bowl. They looked great on his new 46 inch flat screen TV though!
One interesting thing we noticed when we watched, on (i think it was) Georgia’s final drive, one of our DE’s jumped offsides, but wasn’t called for it. They interviewed Georgia’s coach after the game and he mentioned that, so we went back and looked, and he was absolutely right. Not that that would have changed the outcome any (though I guess it could have), but it was an interesting thing you may not have noticed without a DVD.
I think installment 37
is the part that is still the most ingrained in my mind (seeing how much we had been drinking up to that point at the party we were having that night). Our living room was packed and everyone was getting very nervous as we watched Miami marching down the field, knowing that it only would take an endzone completion and it could be over just like that.
Our place just erupted when Giftopolous (sp?) made that interception. And despite all of the snow that fell in State College that day, I rode from Southgate drive down to College Avenue on the hood of a buddy’s car. Thought I was going to have to walk back to the apartment after getting separated from our group wandering in the crowd that completely shut down College Ave. Hugging hot chicks that I never met before. Joining in the snowball fights that erupted. Good times.
"the secret to loving your job is having a hobby that you really despise"
I recently watched that part for an upcoming article (STAY TUNED!!)
and was literally scared that Testeverde was actually going to score and that I had remembered, and read about, this game all wrong. Giftopolous you amazing Greek (I’m stereotyping) bastard!

Jimmy Johnson
completely blew that game with his playcalling at the end.
Dude gagged hugely.
'People are about as happy as they decide they want to be'
He wanted to run the ball (presumably before Pete Johnson's sack) but Vinny wanted to win the game himself.
