New Maxwell Club Award to be named for Paterno
So yeah, the Maxwell club is beginning a new coaching award name for Joe Pa. What happens if he wins the award?

It's a little premature...
…since, you know, he’s still coaching and ALIVE and all that.

Why does that really matter?
There are several awards that were named for people when they were still alive.

In his case
it just makes me a little uncomfortable. I can’t imagine feels honored by it. It’s almost like counting your chips before you’ve left the table.
But then again, he’s already a HOFamer and has a statue at the stadium. AND his own creamery flavor. So what the hell, let’s name an award after him too.

I would disagree.
This award is not simply a coach of the year, but it sounds like a man of the year award that is only awarded to coaches. If I had to guess, Paterno is probably prouder of being known as a great man who also coaches (this award) then as a great coach (being in the HOF).

Hopefully they honor Paterno's character then
and not award it do some doucheabag coach like Kiffen, Saban, or Meyer.
Well, they obviously have his blessing. Or the award wouldn't have his name.
Black Shoes. Basic Blues. No Name. All Game.
I think it's awesome
What better way to honor the man? Who says you have to die before they name an award after you? The only thing is this could blow up if there should be a scandal of some kind surrounding the PSU program to tarnish his record. But I think the chances of that are slim at this point.
This will give Paterno a lot more pull now. More than he had already. He can state his opinion on how the game should be, and if anyone gives him grief he can say, “Did you ever see my trophy?”

This is who is speaking on behalf of Joe now?

I hereby nominate Pat Fitzgerald.
