ACHA Tournament Open Thread (part 1 of a sad 1)
First...
There is, in fact, a tournament access pass at the much more reasonable price of $20 for the entire tournament. You have to go through the ACHA-specific site for Fasthockey. Use http://acha.fasthockey.com to get to the ACHA only site. From there, log-in and then click "Buy" either next to one of the individual games or at the top of the search box (right above the individual games). Also, all of the schedule games you see should be ACHA tournament games. If you are seeing other games, you'll need to go back through that ACHA-Fasthockey website. Once in the purchase screen, scroll through the drop-down box and the very last option is the Tournament Pass for $20. Once it's purchased, you'll have access to all games throughout the tournament. Not surprisingly, I'll be watching the other games - keeping tabs on some, doing some scouting with others.
With that out of the way, it's on to the action!
RMU has two sheets of ice at it's disposal, so there will be two games running at a time (off-set by an hour). Each set of games is also the set where the winners will play each other the next day. Here's the schedule for today (times are EST):

Current games update
Illinois leads Stony Brook 1-0 in the 2nd period. It’s been a much closer game than I had anticipated. ISU-KSU just getting underway.
"I did my walk of shame this morning and everyone was so much nicer," she said. "People were inviting me to parties at 9 a.m."
Illini get a PP goal, starting to take control of game. Up 2-0, and likely on their way to the second round.
Kent State up early on ISU, 1-0 – this would be a huge upset should it continue as such.
"I did my walk of shame this morning and everyone was so much nicer," she said. "People were inviting me to parties at 9 a.m."
This is at the Island Sports Center?
That’s friggen great. I might be able to go! Let’s hope PSU wins today.
God Created the World Out Of Nothing, Paterno Built A National Superpower On Cow Fields...
Sadly, you've got the wrong RMU
This tourney is in Illinois – just outside of Chicago.
"I did my walk of shame this morning and everyone was so much nicer," she said. "People were inviting me to parties at 9 a.m."
...
That’s a shame…

Haha
Just noticed the flyer in the post. I honestly thought it was a SBN ad. That should tell you how bad the ads are getting around here.
God Created the World Out Of Nothing, Paterno Built A National Superpower On Cow Fields...
Illinois up 2-0 after 2 periods. One of their leaders, J.J. Heredia, did go down late in the period. Not sure how serious the injury is, but that could have serious implications for the rest of the tournament.
Iowa State starting to live up to that #5 ranking and is now leading KSU, 2-1.
"I did my walk of shame this morning and everyone was so much nicer," she said. "People were inviting me to parties at 9 a.m."
Illini roll, 7-0; ISU-KSU tied 3-3 late in the 2nd
"I did my walk of shame this morning and everyone was so much nicer," she said. "People were inviting me to parties at 9 a.m."
Huge swing in the ISU-KSU game
ISU called for a 5-min major (goalie interference of some sort) and a Game Misconduct. KSU scored on the powerplay to take a 4-3, and will have about 1:30 of PP time left on the major to start the 3rd period.
"I did my walk of shame this morning and everyone was so much nicer," she said. "People were inviting me to parties at 9 a.m."
do you mean the Hockey Management Association?
or some other student hockey program?
"I did my walk of shame this morning and everyone was so much nicer," she said. "People were inviting me to parties at 9 a.m."
sorry

Nope
There wasn’t a TV program that did much/anything with the Icers during my 4 years on campus. Heck, it was hard enough to get Collegian writers for a couple seasons.
"I did my walk of shame this morning and everyone was so much nicer," she said. "People were inviting me to parties at 9 a.m."
when were you in school?
doesn’t sound like it was continued after I graduated

And the Icers have hit the ice!
"I did my walk of shame this morning and everyone was so much nicer," she said. "People were inviting me to parties at 9 a.m."
Dominic Morrone gets the first penalty. Needed to cut those down, so that’s not a good sign. Big PK early in this game
"I did my walk of shame this morning and everyone was so much nicer," she said. "People were inviting me to parties at 9 a.m."
A couple of good chances for the ’Roos on that PP, but no scoring. Still 0-0, about 5 minutes into the 1st period
"I did my walk of shame this morning and everyone was so much nicer," she said. "People were inviting me to parties at 9 a.m."
Surprise, another Icers penalty...
"I did my walk of shame this morning and everyone was so much nicer," she said. "People were inviting me to parties at 9 a.m."
Morrone does some nice work on the PK
forces Canton to take a penalty. Icers will be on the PP in 12 seconds
"I did my walk of shame this morning and everyone was so much nicer," she said. "People were inviting me to parties at 9 a.m."
No goals, still 0-0 with 8:35 left
"I did my walk of shame this morning and everyone was so much nicer," she said. "People were inviting me to parties at 9 a.m."
Canton penalty, Icers go back on the PP
In the ISU-KSU game, they Cyclones have come back from a 5-3 deficit in the 3rd period to take a 6-5 lead with under 5 minutes left in the period. That’s just been an odd, odd game.
"I did my walk of shame this morning and everyone was so much nicer," she said. "People were inviting me to parties at 9 a.m."
Icers using a 5-forward powerplay line
definitely not normal, but the combo of Cerutti-T. O’Brien-Steinour-Morrone-Seravalli certainly looks nasty on paper.
ICERS SCORE! Just after the powerplay ends, it’s Marek Polidor. Icers lead 1-0 with 5:28 left in the period.
"I did my walk of shame this morning and everyone was so much nicer," she said. "People were inviting me to parties at 9 a.m."
Canton player fires a slapshot past Hume
Game tied at 1-1 with 2:18 left in the period.
"I did my walk of shame this morning and everyone was so much nicer," she said. "People were inviting me to parties at 9 a.m."
KSU just tied up their game at 6-6. Could be looking at OT over there
"I did my walk of shame this morning and everyone was so much nicer," she said. "People were inviting me to parties at 9 a.m."
KSU-ISU going to OT; PSU-SUNY Canton tied at 1-1, after 1
"I did my walk of shame this morning and everyone was so much nicer," she said. "People were inviting me to parties at 9 a.m."
2nd period underway
and the ICERS SCORE!
Canton goalie allows a rebound, and Ryan Paradis puts it home. Icers lead 2-1 less than 90 seconds into the 2nd period.
"I did my walk of shame this morning and everyone was so much nicer," she said. "People were inviting me to parties at 9 a.m."
Iowa State has finally put Kent State, 7-6 in OT
2nd round match-up will be a classic CSCHL match-up of Iowa State vs. Illinois.
"I did my walk of shame this morning and everyone was so much nicer," she said. "People were inviting me to parties at 9 a.m."
And just like every other game
Hume gives up another rebound, and the ’Roos tie it up. On the powerplay too, no less.
"I did my walk of shame this morning and everyone was so much nicer," she said. "People were inviting me to parties at 9 a.m."
And Canton has taken the lead with just under 14 minutes left in the period
"I did my walk of shame this morning and everyone was so much nicer," she said. "People were inviting me to parties at 9 a.m."
Icers on a 5-on-3 powerplay
"I did my walk of shame this morning and everyone was so much nicer," she said. "People were inviting me to parties at 9 a.m."
Icers PP goal waved off
But Seravalli makes up for it seconds later. Game tied at 3-3, Icers still on the PP
"I did my walk of shame this morning and everyone was so much nicer," she said. "People were inviting me to parties at 9 a.m."
And Paradis completes the powerplay with a goal
Icers lead 4-3 with about 7 minutes left in the 2nd period
"I did my walk of shame this morning and everyone was so much nicer," she said. "People were inviting me to parties at 9 a.m."
You lucky doucheabag.
You got the good team.

Which one?
I’ve got the Icers streaming online, and I’m watching Marquette lead ND. :)
"I did my walk of shame this morning and everyone was so much nicer," she said. "People were inviting me to parties at 9 a.m."
Icers have taken complete control of this game
After a number of great scoring opportunities, with Canton’s goalie coming up huge, but the Cerutti finally slammed one home after he was hauled down on a breakaway. Icers up 5-3.
Another penalty on SUNY, so another PP oppty for the Icers.
"I did my walk of shame this morning and everyone was so much nicer," she said. "People were inviting me to parties at 9 a.m."
Icers take the 5-3 lead into the 2nd intermission
"I did my walk of shame this morning and everyone was so much nicer," she said. "People were inviting me to parties at 9 a.m."
So with this intermission break
I wanted to bring up this set of first round predictions from the collegian writers. Now, there’s not too much to argue for/against – there are a number of things I align with myself, or could see happening. However, there are a few things I laughed at.
First, that Kent State and Arizona State were viable “darkhorse” picks. Seriously, neither team has been that good this season – Arizona State has been in a tailspin, and Kent State probably shouldn’t have made the tournament at all (Adrian and URI were more capable teams, by far). Kudos to Kent State for pushing ISU to the brink, but that might be more on my over-rating ISU than anything else.
Also, Ohio could be a team that takes down Lindenwood, if, you know, the Bobcats weren’t sucking so much during the second half of this season. After their sweep of LU last semester, they’ve just looked blah, splitting a lot of weekends they should have swept. Icers used to do this a few seasons ago and found themselves bounced after the second round. I still think Ohio is going to be upset this first round – facing the host team is never something you want to do, and this shaky Ohio team will have to be on serious upset watch.
Darkhorse teams? Your pick of the 6/7/8 seeds – Liberty, Oklahoma, Minot State. 3 teams a lot of people aren’t talking about, but all three can surprise some people.
Also, a lot of people picked the upset of Stony Brook over Illinois. That never even crossed my mind, as SB never looked all that solid, and Illinois is still Illinois. To be honest, with the ACHA, sometimes history really is the best predictor of future results.
"I did my walk of shame this morning and everyone was so much nicer," she said. "People were inviting me to parties at 9 a.m."
3rd period has been underway
chances for both teams, but nothing on the scoreboard. Icers still controlling much of the action, as SUNY is just hoping for something to slide to their sticks for an easy goal. Kangaroos are just out of energy.
"I did my walk of shame this morning and everyone was so much nicer," she said. "People were inviting me to parties at 9 a.m."
Seravalli puts home a PP goal, puts the Icers up 6-3 with about 9 minutes left in the game
"I did my walk of shame this morning and everyone was so much nicer," she said. "People were inviting me to parties at 9 a.m."
In the other game
Central Oklahoma gets a late goal in the 1st period to take a 1-0 lead over Oklahoma into the 1st intermission.
"I did my walk of shame this morning and everyone was so much nicer," she said. "People were inviting me to parties at 9 a.m."
Timmy OB puts home a lazy defensive turnover by the 'Roos
Icers lead 7-3 with about 2:30 left in the game.
"I did my walk of shame this morning and everyone was so much nicer," she said. "People were inviting me to parties at 9 a.m."
And it's official, ICERS WIN!
First round down, next round will be the winner of the OU/UCO game being played on the other rink right now.
"I did my walk of shame this morning and everyone was so much nicer," she said. "People were inviting me to parties at 9 a.m."
Quick update
OU/UCO going to OT tied at 4-4. Regardless of who wins, this is good news for the Icers.
Lindenwood destroying Rutgers, 5-1 after 1 period.
"I did my walk of shame this morning and everyone was so much nicer," she said. "People were inviting me to parties at 9 a.m."
Thanks
Thanks for the updates I normally try to follow the Icers post season more but it fell as the same weekend as wrestling this year. When do the Icers play next?
Icers play again tomorrow at 2pm Central (3pm EST)
They will face Central Oklahoma in the quarterfinals. It’s the first time the Icers have played UCO.
UCO beat Oklahoma in double-OT, 5-4. I didn’t watch the end of it, but you always have to wonder how much energy is left for a team who went into double OT against a rival. The biggest thing for the Icers to worry about is that UCO is playing red-hot as of late.
Also, Lindenwood finished off Rutgers, 8-3. UCO over Oklahoma has been the only upset so far.
"I did my walk of shame this morning and everyone was so much nicer," she said. "People were inviting me to parties at 9 a.m."
Late game update
Minot State downed Oakland in OT, 3-2. And Ohio hung on to beat host RMU by a 2-1 score. Didn’t realize RMU was playing with a short bench (only 16 skaters I heard on the broadcast), and if they hadn’t been completely drained by the end of the game, Ohio loses.
Last game of the night is Liberty v. ASU – delayed because of the 72 OT games played today. Winner will play Ohio tomorrow. I’ll put up an updated bracket/schedule for tomorrow once this last game is done.
"I did my walk of shame this morning and everyone was so much nicer," she said. "People were inviting me to parties at 9 a.m."
And as midnight strikes at the Edge Ice Arena
the second big upset of the first round comes down – a 7-4 win for Arizona State over Liberty. Really, this a big one for me, as ASU had a horrible finish to the season and was another team (along with Kent State) I thought didn’t even belong in the tournament. But as it is, they’ve taken down the Flames, setting up the quarterfinal match-ups for tomorrow.
As always, I direct you to the Icers website and the awesome set of brackets the webmaster has set up over there. (Ok, sure – I know the guy, and he’s done a might fine job with up-keeping that website. So I plug it where possible.)
This is also the last post for the first day – Quarterfinals posts start below
"I did my walk of shame this morning and everyone was so much nicer," she said. "People were inviting me to parties at 9 a.m."
Quarterfinals underway
and Iowa State has jumped all over the Illini, 2-0 in the first period. But if there’s anything this tournament has taught me, it’s a long game and anything can still happen.
"I did my walk of shame this morning and everyone was so much nicer," she said. "People were inviting me to parties at 9 a.m."
And sure enough
Illinois has tied the game at 2-2 in the 2nd period.
"I did my walk of shame this morning and everyone was so much nicer," she said. "People were inviting me to parties at 9 a.m."
And they're heading to OT
Illinois-Iowa State still tied at 2-2.
"I did my walk of shame this morning and everyone was so much nicer," she said. "People were inviting me to parties at 9 a.m."
Just that quickly, it's over
Iowa State puts home the winner 39 seconds in OT, becoming the first team to clinch their spot in the semis.
Also, the only way Penn State can play ISU is if Lindenwood beats Minot State and ASU upsets Ohio.
"I did my walk of shame this morning and everyone was so much nicer," she said. "People were inviting me to parties at 9 a.m."
Because the ISU-Illinois game went into OT
the Icers game will be pushed back slightly from their 2pm start. I’d figure a push back of about 20-30 minutes.
"I did my walk of shame this morning and everyone was so much nicer," she said. "People were inviting me to parties at 9 a.m."
Icers game is underway
There will be a lot of feeling-out in the first half of this period. Again, it’s the first meeting of these two teams, and I’m sure Penn State will also be trying to get an idea of the energy UCO is hoping to bring.
"I did my walk of shame this morning and everyone was so much nicer," she said. "People were inviting me to parties at 9 a.m."
ICERS SCORE!
2:12 into the period, Taylor Cera puts home a rebound, giving the Icers the early 1-0 lead.
"I did my walk of shame this morning and everyone was so much nicer," she said. "People were inviting me to parties at 9 a.m."
Lots of back and forth action in the 1st period
As both teams would get great scoring opportunities. UCO goalie is the reason the Icers don’t have more than a 1-0 lead right now after one period of play.
"I did my walk of shame this morning and everyone was so much nicer," she said. "People were inviting me to parties at 9 a.m."
2nd period underway
2nd period has been the worst period for the Icers this season, allowing the same number of goals in the 2nd period as they have in the 1st and 3rd periods combined (45).
Lots of energy for both teams, and the Icers seem to be content with dumping the puck deep in the UCO zone and keeping the puck on that half of the ice as much as possible. Not lots of scoring opportunities, but UCO can’t score if the puck is in their defensive zone.
"I did my walk of shame this morning and everyone was so much nicer," she said. "People were inviting me to parties at 9 a.m."
Thurston gets a penalty, giving UCO the chance to control momentum early in this 2nd period
"I did my walk of shame this morning and everyone was so much nicer," she said. "People were inviting me to parties at 9 a.m."
Icers get 2 different 2-on-1 short-handed opportunites but with no success
"I did my walk of shame this morning and everyone was so much nicer," she said. "People were inviting me to parties at 9 a.m."
A horrible defensive turnover by the Icers
gives UCO a great scoring opportunity. But Hume makes a couple of saves on the breakaway to keep the score at 1-0, about 7 minutes left in the 2nd period.
"I did my walk of shame this morning and everyone was so much nicer," she said. "People were inviting me to parties at 9 a.m."
Paradis gets a breakaway, but the UCO goalie continues to come up big
"I did my walk of shame this morning and everyone was so much nicer," she said. "People were inviting me to parties at 9 a.m."
UCO goalie gets hit with a stick
then does a little acting to get some extra rest time. Oh, how I love goalies.
"I did my walk of shame this morning and everyone was so much nicer," she said. "People were inviting me to parties at 9 a.m."
Icers on the PP
and doing a very poor job of it.
"I did my walk of shame this morning and everyone was so much nicer," she said. "People were inviting me to parties at 9 a.m."
For all my apprehensions towards FASTHockey
the video quality is decent, the score-bar at the top is a great feature, and they did a good job in getting an affordable tournament pass. The only downside is that the people doing the video work are apparently high, because they’re constantly 3 seconds behind the puck.
"I did my walk of shame this morning and everyone was so much nicer," she said. "People were inviting me to parties at 9 a.m."
UCO getting some great chances, but Hume and the defense coming up big
UCO then commits a penalty, and the Icers will go back on the PowerPlay. Hopefully this one will be better than the previous one.
"I did my walk of shame this morning and everyone was so much nicer," she said. "People were inviting me to parties at 9 a.m."
Some great chances on the PP
but all for nothing at this point. Twice, the net was bumped off the pegs, but once it looked like it might have been done intentionally by the UCO goalie.
Just had a slew of penalties, teams at 4-on-4.
"I did my walk of shame this morning and everyone was so much nicer," she said. "People were inviting me to parties at 9 a.m."
After 2 periods, Icers still lead 1-0
UCO will start the 3rd period on the powerplay. And by no surprise, tempers are starting to flare between the two teams. Oh, and the UCO fans booed the Icers as they were leaving the ice. So yeah, it’s going to be a fun 3rd period.
"I did my walk of shame this morning and everyone was so much nicer," she said. "People were inviting me to parties at 9 a.m."
So how are the icers playing?
Sounds like they’re a little sloppy today, although I guess it doesn’t matter in a tournament like this just hope to win and get to the next game.
It hasn't been too bad today
It’s been a very back and forth game so far, with neither team controlling momentum. A few mental lapses, but they’ve also had some great chances that they just couldn’t finish off.
UCO has some great speed guys, and as the underdog, they’re playing with a lot of energy and heart. So all things considered, the Icers have played really well so far. They just need to kill this penalty to start the 3rd period, and then try to put this game away early in the period.
"I did my walk of shame this morning and everyone was so much nicer," she said. "People were inviting me to parties at 9 a.m."
Penalty killed successfully
18:11 remaining in the 3rd period
"I did my walk of shame this morning and everyone was so much nicer," she said. "People were inviting me to parties at 9 a.m."
This UCO announcer needs to stop pronouncing it
More-own-EEE. The ‘E’ is silent at the end of Morrone.
"I did my walk of shame this morning and everyone was so much nicer," she said. "People were inviting me to parties at 9 a.m."
Icers controlling much of the offensive action as of late
UCO has had a few chances, but most of their rushes have been stopped before anything can develop. Icers need to score and score soon to put this game away.
"I did my walk of shame this morning and everyone was so much nicer," she said. "People were inviting me to parties at 9 a.m."
Halfway thru the 3rd period, still 1-0 Icers
"I did my walk of shame this morning and everyone was so much nicer," she said. "People were inviting me to parties at 9 a.m."
Down to 8 minutes left
Teams are 4-on-4, with the Icers getting a PP soon
"I did my walk of shame this morning and everyone was so much nicer," she said. "People were inviting me to parties at 9 a.m."
4:00 left, still 1-0
Icers had a couple good chances, but the UCO goalie still standing on his head.
"I did my walk of shame this morning and everyone was so much nicer," she said. "People were inviting me to parties at 9 a.m."
UCO goalie comes up HUGE again
just robbed Timmy OB.
Under 2 minutes left
"I did my walk of shame this morning and everyone was so much nicer," she said. "People were inviting me to parties at 9 a.m."
UCO pulls the goalie
and scores on an offensive zone draw with less than 90 seconds left
"I did my walk of shame this morning and everyone was so much nicer," she said. "People were inviting me to parties at 9 a.m."
And we're going to OT...
"I did my walk of shame this morning and everyone was so much nicer," she said. "People were inviting me to parties at 9 a.m."
And it's over folks
UCO gets a 2-on-1 break and is able to beat Teddy Hume. Great win for the UCO program, and this entire win is on the back of their goalie. And UCO continues their hot streak.
As for the Icers, it’s a disappointing end to an otherwise solid season. This team is much better than a quarterfinal exit, but such is the beast of the tournament. A lot to look forward to for next season, but a lot of thinking to do until then.
"I did my walk of shame this morning and everyone was so much nicer," she said. "People were inviting me to parties at 9 a.m."
Also, this is likely the end of my major updates
I’ll keep tabs and updates on who wins and all that. But they’ll likely be more in summary at days end.
"I did my walk of shame this morning and everyone was so much nicer," she said. "People were inviting me to parties at 9 a.m."
The quarterfinals are complete
The semis look like this (will be played on Tuesday):
(#1) Lindenwood vs. (#10) Central Oklahoma
(#3) Ohio vs. (#5) Iowa State
As for the final rankings, Penn State will finish the season 5th (being the highest ranked tournament team not in the semis). Illinois, Minot State, Arizona State, Oklahoma, and Liberty round out the top 10.
Making a prediction for the final games, I’ll take Lindenwood in a tight win over UCO, and ISU over Ohio. In the finals, Lindenwood becomes the first team since Penn State to win back-to-back National Titles.
"I did my walk of shame this morning and everyone was so much nicer," she said. "People were inviting me to parties at 9 a.m."
Semis
UCO played hard, and had their chances to make it close game, but Lindenwood came away with the 4-0 victory.
Ohio took a 2-0 lead into the 3rd period, but Iowa State made a huge comeback, scoring 4 goals (one of which was an empty netter) in the final period to beat Ohio, 4-2.
So the championship game tomorrow night will be Lindenwood vs. Iowa State. I’m hoping to catch most of that game (if my internet cooperates), and it should be an interesting one. I still think Lindenwood will be the winner and claim their second straight national title.
"I did my walk of shame this morning and everyone was so much nicer," she said. "People were inviting me to parties at 9 a.m."
And so ends another ACHA season
The championship game played out as both teams trying not to lose. So the action was slow for the most part, and the scoring was limited. Lindenwood would strike first, with two goals in the second period. That’s all that was necessary, and all either team would get, as Lindenwood would cap their back-to-back titles with a 2-0 win over Iowa State.
I’ll do a recap of the Icers post-season and season over the next few weeks (you know, trying not to interfere with the basketball team’s run at the Big Ten and NCAA tournaments).
