Big Ten Wrestling Championships Session 2 updates

I'll be putting the updates for session two in here. The first rounds of consis will be up first. Pearsall is wrestling now and losing not surprisingly. Ortega and Steadman will be wrestling in this round as well. Lose and their season is done since none of them will be getting wild card bids.

Penn State is currently in 2nd in the team standings with 57 pts Iowa is in 1st with 91 pts. Iowa is having an even better then expected tournament if that's possible. They have yet to lose a match. It's a great start for Penn State but they'll need an incredible session tonight to stay in 2nd.

Pearsall has just lost, so he'll finish his tournament with out and win and his season is over. Likely he won't be a starter next year with some of the talent coming in.

Tonight's semifinals matchups for Penn State

125: #1 Angel Escobedo vs #4 Brad Pataky
141: #1 Reece Humphrey vs #4 Adam Lynch
149: #1 Brent Metcalf vs #4 Frank Molinaro
157: #2 Cyler Sanderson vs Unseeded Anthony Jones Jr.
165: #1 Andrew Howe vs #4 Dan Vallimont
184: #2 Dave Erwin vs #3 Phil Keddy
Hwt: #2 Dan Erekson vs #3 Cameron Wade

So as you can see Penn State has their work cut out for them. Keddy Erwin is really a toss up and the way Iowa is wrestling I would make Erwin the underdog there. Sanderson should be a heavy favorite over Jones who he pinned in the dual earlier this year. However Cyler had a rough first match and Jones has been having an awesome tournament so that could be a sleeper for a big upset.

Ortega loses

Justin Ortega got pinned by Zeerip of michigan. His season ends on a 13 match losing streak. His days as a starter could also be over with all of the talent that’s waiting in the wings in the upper weights.

Steadman loses

Steadman lost Patrick Bond 8 3. So Penn State is down to the 7 guys in the semifinals.

Pataky loses bad

Pataky got pounded by Angel Escobedo 14 1. Lynch is coming up in a few minutes his bout could be just as bad. Pataky falls to the consi semis. He should be able to win that match and is looking at a likely bout with Zach Sanders of Minnesota for 3rd place.

Lynch falls to consis

Lynch lost to Humphrey 14 4. He’ll need a win in the consi semis to advance to the NCAAs.

Molinaro loses to Metcalf

Frank kept it close early but then like everyone else got broken by Metcalf and lost 12 3. Not the best start in the world for Penn State. But Sanderson is leading early.

Penn State has a finalist!

Cyler Sanderson wins 6 0 and he’ll meet Colton Salazaar for the title tomorrow. He’s also the first Penn Stater to qualify for the NCAAs. Vallimont and Howe are on the mat now.

I actually like the matchup

Obviously would like to see Dan in the finals but I like the matchup with Morningstar better than Sponsellor.

from what i heard, it was a pretty exciting match.

Dan went hard and really pressed to the end. Wish we could watch this somewhere…..

Vallimont wrestles tough

Vallimont probably wrestled the best match so far tonight for Penn State but he lost to Andrew Howe 3 1 and will drop into the consolation semifinals.

Erwin loses

Erwin loses 4 1 to Keddy. Cameron Wade is up next for Penn State.

Wade loses

Things got chippy between Cael and Brands midway through the match. Brands as always ran out onto the mat to argue with the official. Brands should have been tossed but since it’s Iowa they just ignore it. Cael refused to ignore it, I’m sure it’s only the beginning for those two.

Wade lost to Erekson 5 2. Penn State won just one bout in this session going 1 – 9. That’s gonna hurt. They’ll be back in action tomorrow, and will need to bounce back if they want to contend for a top three team finish.
