Wrestling Session 3 Update and Open Thread
Session 3 has just gotten underway. I'll be posting updates here. Brad Pataky is currently wrestling Penn State has 6 guys wrestling in the consi semis. Adam Lynch coming up in a few minutes is in a must win situation basically for a chance to go to nationals. The rest should be through with at large bids.
The finals will be shown live at 2 pm on the Big Ten Network. Unfortunately Penn State has just one finalist Cyler Sanderson at 157. The other six guys still alive will be wrestling for either 3rd or 5th at the same time so I'll try to keep updates posted on how those guys are doing while the finals are on tv. Pataky is now beating Niko Triggas bad.

Pataky wins
Pataky beat Nikko Triggas 11 2. Good start for Penn State the bonus for a major decision will help Penn State in the team race. Penn State is 5th entering wrestling today.
Pataky will be taking on Zach Sanders from Minnesota should be a good match up for Brad to get a chance to finish 3rd.
Lynch trailing early
Lynch gave up an early takedown and is trailing 2 – 0 got the escape to make it 2 – 1. Archuletta of Purdue also has 30 seconds in riding time. Another Archuletta takedown 4 1.
To clarify my post Lynch could still get an at large bid but it’s not a sure thing.
Lynch loses
He’ll need a win in the 5th place bout to give himself a chance to get a wild card. Final score was 15 5. Lynch will take on Cole Schmidt of Wisconsin who he beat earlier this year. Frank Molinaro is wrestling now against Mario Mason.
Molinaro wins
Frank Molinaro beat Mario Mason 6 0 he’ll wrestle for 3rd against Kyle Ruschell for 3rd place. Molinaro beat Ruschell earlier in the dual meet this year but that should be a good close bout.
Vallimont wins
Dan Vallimont wins 3 1 over Yohn of Minnesota. He’ll wrestle Morningstar of Iowa who survived a scare against Paul Young of Indiana. Morningstar has won the last three matches against Dan and Dan has never beaten him at 165 lbs. But I actually like Dan’s chances in that one. Like many of the matches with Dan it will come down to his ability to get out from the bottom position.
Two left for Penn State
Erwin and Wade are coming up momentarily for Penn State, they’re bouncing back nicely this round. They need to get some upsets in these consi final bouts if they hope to move up in the team race. I’m not sure if they can get up to third but they still have a chance to pass wisconsin for 4th.
All the matches will obviously be tough but I think Penn State should have a chance to win each one.
Dave Erwin wins
Erwin wins 6 2, he’ll face former NCAA champ Mike Pucillo for 3rd place.
Cameron Wade loses
Wade lost 2 1 to Bugenhagen he’ll need to win his next bout for fifth place for a chance to get an automatic bid. Really disappointing finish to the round for Penn State.
Pataky quick takedown
Pataky got a quick takedown to jump to a 2 0 lead against Sanders good start.
Pataky throws Sanders to his back
8 3 lead for Pataky at the end of the first big move for Pataky just needs to wrestle smart for the next two periods.
Pataky leads 9 7
Pataky leads 9 7 after two. Takedown Sanders to start the third bout tied 9 9.
Overtime Pataky Sanders tied at 11
Sanders gets a quick takedown and wins it 13 11. Terrible loss for Penn State gave up a 9 3 lead late in the second.
Lynch falls behind 2 0 early
Gave up a takedown 20 seconds in not a good start for Penn State this round.
Lynch gets an escape then quickly gives up another takedown now down 4 1.
Lynch loses 18 3
That’s gonna make it tough to get a wild card bid. Disappointing finish for Lynch.
Takedown Molinaro
Quick double for Molinaro puts him on top 2 1 after a Ruschell escape.
Molinaro loses by fall
Terrible terrible showing for Penn State today.
Wow what a final at 149.
Palmer from Ohio State stunned Brent Metcalf who’s basically the Tim Tebow of wrestling awesome win.
Sanderson wins
Cyler gives Penn State a Big Ten champion and their first win this round with an 8 4 win over Colton Salazar.
Takedown Vallimont
Vallimont goes up 2 0 that’s big against Morningstar who doesn’t score very much in his matches.
Vallimont leading 2 1 after one
Nearly added a takedown at the end of the period.
Tied at 2 after the 2nd
Vallimont takes neutral he got ridden the entire period last time they wrestled. Next takedown will likely win it.
Vallimont takedown with 15 seconds left!!!
Big takedown for Vallimont unfortunately Morningstar injured his knee in the process.
Vallimont wins by inj default.
Vallimont was winning 4 2 with 9 seconds left. Morningstar injured his knee and was unable to continue it sounds like it was pretty bad. Hopefully he can heal up in time for nationals. Never want to see anyone especially not a senior get hurt this late in the year.
Erwin loses to Pucillo 4 - 1
Tough loss for Erwin he’s proven he’s right there with some of the good guys in this weight. He’s got two weeks to hopefully close the gap.
Wade wins by fall
Penn State will take 6 guys to nationals. Possibly a 7th if Lynch gets an at large bid which seems unlikely with his finish at this tournament.
Metcalf again
comes up short (see last year’s NCAAs).
Palmer had lost 4 straight to him, but the monkey’s off his back now and his confidence should be through the roof.
Look for the rematch at nationals – should be wild.
'People are about as happy as they decide they want to be'
This is like the day Graham Zug got shoved into the turf by Amari Spievey. Kinda hard to keep the cult going.

Palmer
reminds an awful lot of our Shadow Teamer Jake Kemerer, both in looks, body type and wrestling style.

Does he really look like an Oompa Loompa?
