Big Ten Round One: PSU-Minnesota, Thursday At 7:30

If you're day dreaming, a championship run goes something like Minnesota, Michigan State, Purdue, Ohio State, in that order.
Complete schedule laid out here.

This week in Lame:
The PSU-Minn game is the only round one not on an ESPN network. A theoretical second round game would be on the BTN as well.
I know about your diabolical plan.
No respect
Ah well. At least it’s on in prime time so more people can watch. I doubt anyone would play hooky to watch the game. Have to save up those sick days for the NCAA tournament in a few weeks.

Will there be a bsd bracket on espn or cbs?
I can’t remember if there was one last year
Everyone has a plan until they get punched in the face
There was one last year.
It was ESPN IIRC

For anyone without the luxury of time off
I’d be happy to write up a FanPost on how to circumvent an average firewall so you can watch the free online NCAA streams at work. It’s not illegal, so the only risk you run is that of pissing off your employer. But also they’d have a tough time figuring out you were watching NCAA basketball without looking at your screen.
How many points combined did we lose to all 4 of those teams the last time we played them? 10? 20? Keep hope alive.

If you go by the closest matchups
Minnesota-2, MSU-2, Purdue-4, OSU-6. The only other teams I could see us playing in the championship game are jNW (2 wins), Wisconsin (0 pt loss, OT), and Illinois (1 pt).

All Minnesota players seem to have the same fade haircut.
What are they a cult?

In support of a teammate...
They all shaved their heads a couple weeks ago in support of one of the player’s (I think Damian Johnson) sisters. She’s in high school and found out she has cancer and was going to lose her hair.
There was a feature on Big Ten: Journey, which is a really great show.

I agree about the BTN show The Journey
I enjoy watching that show. It is very timely and well done. I think the BTN does a great job of showcasing the individual players in the league. I just wish they had more content overall. I could watch the same highlight show 10 times a night if I wanted to. Since the schools are supporting the network, I’m surprised they don’t push to have more coverage in the other sports.

I agree with less repeats, but the reality is that it’s not free to produce sport content and I don’t know if some extra women’s gymnastics broadcasts would really get any significant ratings (i.e. better than the 8th showing a particular “The Journey” episode). Point being that a greater variety of programs is probably a money losing affair for the network and it’s more cost effective to just have repeats.
I hate Minnesota
Probably the B10 team I hate most at the moment. They’re the opposite of “Success With Honor”

I thought PSU fans ignored Minn
is this still resentment from the 99 football game?
what you say here can, and will, be used against you
Fugi tends to hate random Big Ten schools and players that few others know of.
I appreciate that. Keeps things fresh here.

that's cool
I was really just looking for an excuse to bring up the 99 game. One of the few highlights we have over the last few decades.
what you say here can, and will, be used against you
Still hold a grudge from that game

I would have liked to see NW in the first round
but nothing we can do about it now. Minnesota still has a miniscule tourney chance so they will still play hard. Michigan State in a 2nd round matchup would be really tough, much more than Purdue.
Maybe I'm crazy...
I think Purdue may actually be a worse matchup for us. I think their guards are slightly better than ours. Also, MSU has more depth than does Purdue, but they don’t really have any big men as good as JaJuan Johnson.

I see your point
Purdue knows it is going to have to make up for not having Hummel by playing EVEN TOUGHER defense. We seem to have better luck on offense against MSU.
by mundyscorner99 on Mar 8, 2010 3:21 PM EST up reply actions
Purdue seemed pretty reluctant to shoot the 3 on Saturday
but I think that is more because they knew they could get it inside. Maybe we could coax MSU into settling for 3’s by playing the zone and hope they are cold.

We may be bad...
But NW, UM, Iowa, and IU are all worse. I don’t care that we lost to the latter three. Iowa just lost to Wisconsin and barely hit 40 in the process (Wisconsin players were actually laughing at them) and lost Minnesota by 35(!). IU is really bad at pretty much every facet of the game. Michigan just got killed by MSU. Manny Harris showed he’s pretty inconsistent and probably not that good. MSU seemed to be just laughing it up. They had two dunks by Isaiah Dahlman who is slow and very white. One was an alley-oop.

I'm just going on memory so I may be wrong
But the only B10 games that we were not really competitive in were UW at home and Purdue on the road, and even those were not the 30 point beatdowns that IU and Iowa have seemingly had every other game. I think we would beat both of those teams by 15 points today.

I agree
I’ve been thinking of doing a post called “The Best Last-Place Team in History” and point out that a handful of plays could have had us finish in 7th place or better in the league this year.

They very realistically could've finished 9-9
Illinois on the road
Wisconsin on the road
Michigan at home
Ohio State on the road
Purdue at home
Indiana at home
Iowa on the road
Minnesota (both)
These are 9 games that a few plays could have made things a lot different. Hopefully they can take the next step and win those types of games next year.

Hope
16 of PSU’s 19 losses were by 11 points or less, 10 by 5 points or less, 8 by 3 points or less. PSU was a few free throws per game and a couple iffy calls away from being a 6-7 seed lock. I’m hoping PSU will make a run in the B10 tournament, but even if they don’t, my hopes for next year are unreasonably high.
Reach out; touch faith.
What sucks to think about
Is that this could be the last game of the season, at a time where they are playing their best basketball of the season. I know it hasn’t gone well at all, but I feel like the team has been pretty entertaining for most of the season. I feel like there are definitely better days ahead.
Is there a betting line out for Thursday?
I would imagine that Minny would be favored, but I would think it would be close.
One book has PSU winning the tourney at 80/1
Other 80/1 odds makers:
The odds a white female will ever be diagnosed with bladder cancer are 1 in 80
The odds an adult who has an alcohol use disorder also has panic disorder with agoraphobia are 1 in 80
The odds a person in Colma, California will be the victim of a reported aggravated assault in a year are 1 in 80
The odds a person whose last name is Ray is Asian or Pacific Islander are 1 in 80
The odds a person in Mamou, Louisiana will be the victim of a reported violent crime in a year are 1 in 79.95
The odds an employed person 16 or older in North Carolina is a heavy truck driver or tractor-trailer truck driver are 1 in 80.07
so we have a chance!
My favorite comment today, by far.
And wait, $20 on PSU gets me $1600? TOTALLY WORTH IT.

Iowa lost by 35 to a so-so Minnesota team.

I'm surprised Iowa isn't 12 million to 1
They are the worst offense I’ve seen in a number of years.

Michigan
recently took a Minnesota team that still had (has?) a glimmer of at-large hope behind a woodshed. When the 3 ball is falling, they can play with anyone.
Reach out; touch faith.
"When the 3 ball is falling". That's just it.
Their entire offense and entire game (and because their defense is questionable) is reliant on jacked up 20-30 footers hitting. Three-lein’s (see what I did there?) system can work, I think, but Michigan is just bad running it. I see a team that doesn’t execute very well in getting open looks from long range. Plus, they never feed Sims enough. And if they do, he’s too far away from the basket.
Minnesota isn’t that great either.

Agreed
I agree with everything you said, but a 3 point jacking, zone defense playing team is always dangerous. Some cute little 3 point shooting mid major will win a couple tournament games they probably shouldn’t doing just that. It happens every year.
Reach out; touch faith.
Yeah, but those teams usually play *good* zone defense.

Style
I view that style of play like I view a football team that throws the ball 75+% of the time. They’ll win 1-2 games per year that they have no business winning, but they’ll lose and/or get blown out of the same number games that either should have been won or should have been much closer.
Reach out; touch faith.
So you're saying there's a chance?
No. There isn’t. Just turn that Iowa line off and replace it with “HAHAHHAHAHAHAHHA”
It never gets to be easy
