PSU - Iowa to close out the year?

Since this is being discussed over at BHGP and some people are afraid to venture into enemy territory, I figured I'd ask the question over here?  What's the Penn State fans' opinion of this newfound rivalry closing out our years?

My personal opinion:

Nope. There isn’t a team I’d rather play in primetime than Penn State. It would be a shame to lose the chance at that and have it just wash out as another end of the year game. No matter who Iowa plays that weekend, the spot light is on Michigan-tOSU and probably always will be. These days, when Iowa plays PSU, it’s a can’t miss game for the rest of the college football loving country and that exposure just isn’t gonna happen with anybody else. When people outside the conference circle BigXI games to pay attention to at the beginning of the year, it’s Mich-tOSU, Mich-ND, tOSU-USC, & Iowa-PSU. Penn State is viewed as a traditional power, and having this game as a flagship game for the BigXI is awesome.

Just my $0.02.  Whatcha got?

PSU-Iowa as a "rivalry"

I don’t really feel any hatred toward Iowa. At all.

When they play Michigan and Ohio State (or Pitt a few years ago), I root for them, unless of course it behooves Penn State to have them lose as it did last year when they played Michigan. But truthfully, I don’t know if I can say a team I root for more often than not is a team I consider a rival. Of course, you could say the same about Sparty, but if we’re going to start calling Iowa a rival, it’s only because they beat us in a couple big games,

I don't really understand your point here.

You admit you don’t “hate” Iowa, but then admit you don’t really hate MSU, plus MSU kinda sucks.

I would love playing Iowa in such a series. It’s not a natural rivalry, but there is enough dislike to fuel one. Also, Iowa is good and routinely beats us. MSU is a basketball school at this point.

Sure.

But my vision features Penn State-Ohio State as the Big Ten’s version of the October UT-Bama or OU-UT games. Sprinkle in a September game against quality OOC and Michigan every now and then. The only thing missing is a great end of season game, and no one in the conference can offer what Iowa can offer. That’s not pro-Iowa homerism, MSU has been within one score in Beaver Stadium twice over the last 50 years.

Be fair now

They don’t have things like ridgelines to clearly delineate borders, so they do the best they can. My question is why they couldn’t split one of the counties into two so they’d have an even 100. Quitters.

I wish PA had even county and township borders.

Working with land deeds and plotting old leases is hard when there are over 30 different calls for a plot of land. It would be easier to say “It’s a square.” in the old deeds.

Michigan also does this

Random thoughts:

I just can’t consider Iowa a rival. Much as I hate to say it, they have our number. A rivalry should be at least moderately competitive (see PSU-OSU). If we can start beating them, then yes. Let’s get the f8ckers back for keeping us out of the MNC.

Now, as for timing, I say keep it the way it is. Completely ditto ajs1122: because we’re a traditional power and Iowa is always a threat for us, it brings the national spotlight to early conference play. When (if) we beat them, we get some props. If not, they beat us and fly up the rankings, so we don’t fall that fast or that hard. More importantly, we have time to make up for the loss over the next 5-6 games.

Sure, OSU-scUM play at the end of the season, but the press slobbers over them both, so they’re always highly ranked (LOL at UM), so the loss isn’t devastating: remember 06 or 07, when they were 1-2, and UM still nearly got to replay OSU for the MNC. Iowa simply doesn’t have that kind of clout because they get most of their notoriety each year for beating us. We wouldn’t get the same kind of love as OSU/UM.

I feel like we're viewing this in a 2-year vaccuum

Yes, Iowa has beaten us in big games two years in a row. So now they’re a rival? And citing the 7 out of the last 8 thing doesn’t do anything for me either. The first 5 came during our dark years. Everyone beat us in those years. Then they rotated off our schedule for two years when we got better and they sucked. There is definitely room for HATE for Iowa, but I’m not ready to call them a rival quite yet.

by speedomike on Apr 30, 2010 9:55 AM EDT reply actions

Fine, don't call us a rival (yet)

But I think the Big Ten wants a marquee game that doesn’t involve tOSU or Michigan, and right now this is the best in the conference. They clearly know that and are playing it up. I don’t see either team really having the bottom fall out any time soon either. I’m all for seeing a game under the lights every year against you guys if it means both teams look to be battling for BCS berths.

Fuck tOSU

by ajs1122 on Apr 30, 2010 11:01 AM EDT up reply actions

Well it wouldn't be under the lights per se

No night games in November. But it would end under the lights so I take it that’s what you mean.

I don’t know, I guess I’m just content with Sparty to end the year. They’re typically good enough that they somewhat bring the big game feel, but bad enough that we know we’re gonna beat them, and I like that for the last game of the year.

Frankly, I think I’d like it best if we played Iowa in the first conference game of the year like we did this year. It gives us something to immediately look forward to those first couple weeks of the season, and it gives the loser a lot of time to recover.

I wouldn't mind it being a little later

just to give the team a bit more prep time. Like last year, I think the game would have been a bit different had it been played in week 8 instead of week 4. Probably still would have lost, but I don’t think it would have been quite as embarrassing.

I hope my post didn't come across as "Iowa isn't worth being a rival"

Because that’s not what I think. I like and respect Iowa quite a bit. Iowa and Wisconsin are the Big Ten programs I find myself rooting for the most when they aren’t playing us. There have been many good games with Iowa. Iowa-Penn State is a big game. No doubt. It’s just that a rivalry is a unique sort of thing that can’t be created.

It's safe to say we're talking about rivalries

in the “hate” sense of the word i.e. Tennessee/Florida, UGa/GT, Oregon State/Oregon, etc. The PSU/MSU game has one of those Texas/Texas Tech feelings to it; TT sure considers UT to be a rival while Texas considers Tech to be another game.

I guess I mean in the sense

that it’s dubbed a rivalry, even if it’s by networks/front offices, that isn’t really what we think of when discussing a major part of what makes CFB great. There actually really aren’t any good parallels for the MSU/PSU game because it is so uniquely artificial.

But you have to be aware

that this is an excuse often used by Penn State fans when trying to explain their record against Iowa in recent years. I’m just saying it’s a slippery slope because then you’d have Iowa fans arguing that ’07’s loss to PSU shouldn’t count for the same reasons.

Less memorable than Sam Okey's Hawkeye career.

by Kyle McCann't on Apr 30, 2010 3:03 PM EDT up reply actions

I'm not saying they don't count

I’m just saying that them you’d think losing 7 of 8 games to a team would build up some major animosity. We were losing so much during those years that the Iowa losses didn’t really stick out and make me really feel like we needed payback. The last two years, yes. But the Iowa ownage doesn’t compare to the Michigan 9-year ownage. There were 5 losses during the Michigan streak that really, really stung (1997, 1999, 2002, 2005, 2007). I guess the 2002 Iowa game falls into that category but that’d be it. My general point was that the “rivalry” with Iowa is based on the last 2 years. Or at least to me it is.

by speedomike on Apr 30, 2010 3:16 PM EDT up reply actions

It’s pretty well accepted that, aside from small circles, the two schools have more respect for one another than animosity. I was literally only referring to the “dark years” concept that gets bandied about. I don’t want PSU to be Iowa’s season finale; I’m a traditionalist that would like to continue seeing either Minnesota or Wisconsin as the season’s last game for Iowa. As for Penn State, I think we’ll need to see an Eastern school added to the mix before that happens. Hell, if the Big Ten shockingly doesn’t expand, I’d still like to see PSU renew either the Pitt or Maryland games as their finale; they’d be far from the only school to go OOC far their season’s last game.
