Greetings from Tuscaloosa, Alabama

A thing of beauty. A joy forever.
Greetings yankee miscreants!
I'm kleph from Roll Bama Roll. I'm stopping by because we've had a couple of Penn State fans drop into our little corner of the SB Nation neighborhood asking for a few tips to help plan a trip to Tuscaloosa in the Fall. For the most part, our commentariat gave pretty good info to psupride's inquiry but the response to smashmouthsteel's request dissolved into anarchy pretty quick.
So, in an effort to make sure ya'll get the information you need if you are starting to make travel plans I've culled together the gist of the responses and posted them here. It is very likely we'll try and produce some kind of visitor guide closer to the date of the game but this should be enough information to get you started.
Tickets: Prepare for the worst. Demand is likely to be high no matter what. Some folks are predicting these are likely to be in the $250-$300 range especially if it is a night game. If you buy from scalpers keep on the lookout for counterfeit tickets which have become much more common in the past few years. You can have the ticket office verify the tickets if you need, don't buy them if the seller balks at doing this. Also, you might pay a higher price if you are identifible as Penn State fans.
Lodging: Book your rooms now or forever hold your peace. It's already unlikely you'll find an open reservation in T-town but you might get lucky. You can probably get a room an hour up the road in Birmingham or Columbus, Miss and drive in the day of the game. An RV is possible but let us know if you are seriously planning this and we'll do more homework about getting parking passes and such.
Tailgating: Get thee to The Quad. This is in the heart of campus a few blocks from the stadum and it's where everyone will be on gameday. You can reserve a spot but it's probably sold out (again, if you need the info on this, let us know and we'll check into it). But if you go it's certainly worth wandering through and meeting folks. You'll probably be able to find any number of tailgates going on the blocks around campus and in the parking lots. It's not hard to find friendly folks who'll share their beer if you are willing to talk about the history of the rivalry.
Restaurants: If you get to town early head to Dreamland. It's considered the best barbecue in town but you might want to ignore their health inspection score. City Cafe in Northport is a great place to fill up on the cheap and get that classic southern Blue Plate restaurant feel (I ate there A LOT as a student). Cypress Inn is a decent place on the river but it’s not open on saturdays, so hit this one up during the week. Kozy’s is also decent, looks like a house on the outside, nice on the inside.
Bars: The Strip is the place to go. Its just a few blocks from the stadium and where all the cool kids go after the game. RBR's home away from home is Egans. It's the classic southern dive bar and it's glorious. Ask for "Bo" the bartender and mention us and he'll take care of you. The Bloody Marys are reccomended. The Houndstooth is the tourist trap/meat market. Major label beers and a lot of the Greek crowd. The eye candy makes up for a lot of it's more egregious sins. There a bunch of other places you can pop into and check out. You are certain to find one that fits your style.
To Do: If you love football you have to stop at the Bryant Museum. It's a short walk from the quad and open on gameday. It has all kinds of memorabilia and such from the long history of Crimson Tide history. All the trophies will be on display there as well. You don't have to be an Alabama fan to enjoy it. There will be tons of stores on the strip selling Bama merchandise you'll not have any interest in but you might want to pop into The Little Gallery and see some of the works of artist Daniel Moore. You can even pick up a mini print or poster of one of his more famed works like, say, this one...

most of our fans are already considering this game a loss
appreciate the hospitality, but don’t go out of your way.
Why did I know that the "Goal line stand" would be the print you posted?
Is it because I’ve lived back in Alabama for six years now? It has to be the most frequently referenced play in a Penn State/Alabama conversation. LOL!
Thank you for kindly sharing your advice. The Alabama Chapter of the Penn State Alumni Association will be hosting events in Birmingham the day before and may get buses to Tuscaloosa for game day. We’ve already been told that all Tuscaloosa hotels are booked. We’re also talking about trying to get a golf tournament together with the Alabama Alumni Association that Friday. Stay tuned for more information. If we manage to get something with both alumni associations together, I will post the information on your site.
Penn Staters who are visiting, stay tuned. I’ve already offered to host a Black Shoe Diaries tailgate in Tuscaloosa. I will have lots of Yuengling, but y’all can also pick some up on your way from Birmingham to swell the supplies! You can buy it in any grocery store and most gas stations.

I am sitting at a Buffalo Wild Wings in a Birmingham suburb
drinking Yuengling on draft (draught?) right now. We have it in many bars. It’s about $18 for a case a Sam’s, $10-$11 for a 12-pack at a grocery store, and about $6-$7 for a six pack at a convenience store.
For the glory
did you tell the bartender to send it into overtime?

Yes, I know the commercial, but Penn State in overtime sends me into complete hysterics. Why would I wish that on anyone else (except for Butler last night).

I figured they either
1) were just watching b/c it was gameday and weren’t fans of either team
or
2) were fans of the team that was about to lose.
Wow, I put too much thought into that commercial…

Just to show you're not alone
If you look, they’re fans of the team that was about to win. In fact, I think that’s the case in all their sports commercials (which are all variants on the theme).
I only noticed because stuff like that annoys the heck out of me.

Um, no.
There was no attempt at a reference of old stereotypes. I’m from central Pennsylvania (“Pennsylvania is Pittsburgh and Philly with Alabama in between”), I don’t want to be hypocritical. There’s people here with Confederate battle flags, and their ancestors fought for the union.

by Mr. Rosewater on Apr 6, 2010 11:46 PM EDT up reply actions
Bad news, good news on that front
You can ask Bo (chinesedentist on SBNation/RBR) for more about the situation, but basically Alabama has some pretty backwards alcohol laws. Fortunately, we just recently passed a bill that (finally) allowed high gravity beers. I don’t know of any Tuscaloosa breweries, but there is a Birmingham brewery called “Good People” that I think has some pretty fantastic brews, and there are a few places that will sell it in T-town.
by billycthulhu on Apr 7, 2010 12:00 AM EDT up reply actions
My only experience with the Good People Brewing Company
was a beer tasting where I paid $10 to try two beers – an IPA and a stout. I wasn’t that impressed with either of them, but then again, I don’t stray too far from Yuengling if I can help it.
For the glory
Guess it depends on what you like
I’ve tried 2 IPAs from them I believe. I have to admit I thought one of them was just a little too hoppy, but I thought the other one had a really great flavor.
by billycthulhu on Apr 7, 2010 12:26 AM EDT up reply actions
The IPA that I had was too hoppy,
but in general I’m not fan of IPAs. The stout was made from coffee and I don’t drink coffee. I’m not saying they aren’t good, I just didn’t like them (or paying $10 for samples of only two beers). I’m sort of an Alabaster beer snob, compared to a Mountain Brook or Vestavia beer snob (only Birmingham people will get this reference, but for the Penn Staters it’s too country!
For the glory
I'm not generally a fan of IPAs either
but I really enjoyed the one that wasn’t ultra-hoppy.

and something to keep in mind
a hell of a lot of alabama fans are not alumni. a large portion of the fanbase are alabama residents who never attended the university. the importance of the team to the state is difficult to discribe, its much more of the dynamic of a professional football team but even that doesn’t quite cover it. during the horrors of the depression the football team was about the only positive thing the region had to take pride in and that’s something that has stuck in the mindset of the place.
as crimson tide fans we embrace that as part of our unique culture but it’s part of the reason we get a lot of crap about how our fans are all rednecks and whatnot. i am an alabama fan because i chose to go to school there but on gameday i’ll meet people who never took a class but whose family have been fans for generations. it’s really amazing and awe inspiring.

yes, paterno passed coach bryant. but that’s not much of a point of contention for bama fans. any good coach that lives long enough had a chance of doing that. the six national championships are much more important to us.
but the crimson tide won in happy valley on Nov. 14, 1981 to tie coach bryant with alonzo stagg’s all-time record. despite the loss, the penn state fans gave bryant an ovation, an act quite a few alabama fans still remember and is cause to hold you guys in high esteem.
the next game was the iron bowl and that’s when bryant became the winningest coach in college football history.

Boise State never beat:
USC by several touchdowns
Michigan (at Michigan)
Ohio State…. by a score of 63-14!

Being a native Alabamian,
and raised an Auburn fan, I’ve had plenty of experience with the obnoxious Alabama fans who never stepped foot on campus (I’m related to some of them). The fans who actually went to Alabama are generally much classier than the ones who didn’t.
For the glory
I am one of those sidewalk alums...
…I did not attend UA. I planned to but they didn’t offer me a full ride coming out of HS, Jacksonville State did. So I went to JSU. My brother did play for Bryant at UA and I am a season ticket holder. Do I count?

If you're polite, then you're a classy Alabama fan.
I was making a sweeping generalization based on one of kleph’s comments. Maybe I should qualify it as “many Alabama fans who have never stepped foot on any college campus are obnoxious.” I was just surprised when I moved back here at the difference in the behavior and attitude between the people I met who went to Alabama and the rednecks I met at BWWs and other places. I live in Shelby County, we have a lot of rednecks.
I understand you had to go to school where the money was. That’s how I ended up at Penn State and not at Auburn. For what it’s worth, my dad is a JSU alum. He helped found the Kappa Sig house there.
For the glory
well, my point about being patronizing
is we really don’t give a damn if someone classes us as acceptable or unacceptable in their estimation (particularly a barner partisan). that said, there really doesn’t seem to be much point in being a dickbag either.
but to say that non-alumni alabama fans are, as a group, despicable and to be looked down on is something we bristle at because it’s actually rather elitist. there a lot of very good reasons for our fanbase to be the way it is and any true alabama fan embraces that. (and, as our polar opposite, these conditions also hold true for auburn fans. ergo, you consider yourself a barner although you didn’t attend the school)
for most schools the fans are made up of a group that attended the school i.e. college educated. suddenly there’s a very real socio-economic divide between that fanbase and ours. and it manifests most often in the tossing around of the “redneck” stereotype. you have to keep in mind, we don’t apologize for this element of our fanbase, we embrace it. and anyone who looks down on us about it can go to hell.

I'm not saying that a fanbase has to be alumni
Penn State has a lot of fans who never went to school there. The point that I was making is that there seems to be a difference in the way that Alumni fans and non-alumni fans interact with fans of other schools.
For the glory
i understand that...
what i’m trying to emphasize is that distinction doesn’t quite work when you are discussing alabama.
one of the best examples is warren st. john who penned the superb book on crimson tide fandom, rammer jammer yellow hammer. he’s a birmingham native that got his degree from colombia. he’s been an alabama fan his whole life and even met coach bryant, for chrissakes.
every team has a certain portion of their fanbase that are complete and utter assholes. and alabama is no different. what we reject is the contention that there is a higher proportion of dickhead fans in the non-alumni portion of our fanbase.

Now with that out of the way, nice to see an Aubie make it to Happy Valley. How long of a walk was that? Or did you happen to have a horse and buggy the patriarch let you use? ;-)

This statement
from folks always drives me up the wall. Why do I have to actually attend a specific school to root for it? Do I have to have played for the New York Giants to root for them? No, but my Father was born and raised in Manahattan and he loves the G-men… so I as well root for them.
My ultimate desire was to attend the University of Alabama, but, like bamachine, I was afforded another opportunity on the east coast that I took. My Mother and my Cousin both attended Alabama. So maybe I am just a legacy fan? I don’t consider myself an obnoxious Alabama fan. In fact I LOVE going to Bama games and talking to fans of the otherside. It’s what makes it fun and is always a lesson in culture for both myself and the other party. Sharing a beer and some friendly smack talk with enemy is so much more fun and worth the experience than just berating each other. That ruins the experience altogether.
Granted, you are right, there are some obnoxious Alabama fans, both that attended the University as well as not… just like there are obnoxious Auburn fans, Penn State fans, Ohion Sate fans (the list goes on) that both may have or may not have attended said university.
To clump me in with what you call is an obnoxious fan base, based on having not attended Alabama is just wrong.
That being said I am looking VERY forward to this meeting and the year after in Happy Valley as well! Can’t wait!
My generalization was based largely on experience with family
and people I’ve met in Birmingham. Not all non-alumni fans are obnoxious and not all alumni-fans are nice. Therefore, I apologize for the sweeping generalization. I was actually trying to give you some kudos, in that before moving back here in 2004, I didn’t think there were any nice Alabama fans.
It’s actually pretty funny really, how Alabama fans react when I introduce myself as a Penn State fan and then how that changes when I tell them I’m an Auburn fan, too. We’ll talk very politely until the subject of Auburn and Alabama comes up. When I say that I’m an Auburn fan, too, the entire conversation changes and goes downhill.

this is actually the correct answer
there is no ncaa-recognized national champion in college football. once you note that and agree every championship is determined by outside organizations of varying repute and longevity then you can actually begin this discussion.
Roll 'Bama Roll: The Champagne of 'Bama Blogs.
I guess that is where you'll run into problems, at least 'round here.
Sure we can (and JoePa has been know to) claim championships from at least 5 other years. I guess I like to recognize the ones that are nationally recognized. Further, I really only start counting championships since the face mask was invented. This partially has to do with me arguing with my fiance’s michigan friends (who claim like 104 pre-WW1 titles) and partially has to do with the fact that real college football, as I imagine it, didn’t become title-worthy until after the Second War to End All Wars.
I guess my point is that we have 2 titles, have a feasible claim to at least 4-5 more, but I don’t really recognize the older titles unless it is widely accepted. Some of those pre-WW1 years had, by your understanding, like 6 national champions.

you miss my point...
once we agree that the sanctioning body of the sport does not recognize the champion we have essentially said every means of evaluating the best team in the land is arbitrary to some degree. it’s clearly ridiculous to dismiss the issue altogether but you have to accept there will be limitations on the result.
arguments typically then break down into 1) relative merits of a given team’s season 2) value of evaluating agencies 3) personal preference. and once you start dropping first person pronouns in your argument, you’ve pretty much regulated yourself to door No. 3.
Roll 'Bama Roll: The Champagne of 'Bama Blogs.
I'd like to think I'm in a hybrid of all 3
I will give more weight to an AP champ than a Toronto Sun-Times champ and will certainly recognize the merits of an great season (of which Alabama and PSU have had plenty). I guess I’m mostly in door 3, but that’s only because teams like Pitt and Alabama (and that is not meant to be derogatory) can claim multiple national championships for years that other teams can claim national championships.
And first person pronouns is how I roll. Unless you’d rather I start posting in the third person. PSUJunny does not want to do that, though.

but giving extra weight to the AP poll...
leaves you at a loss over the past several years since they opted out of the championship arrangement. but i think your description of “a hybrid of all three” is pretty much where most folks tend to fall. the bigger problem happens when folks confuse the argument over the polling method and the merit of a team’s performance.
Roll 'Bama Roll: The Champagne of 'Bama Blogs.
Well the last several years is a discussion of its own, as there is clearly a "national" champ.
Other than that one year (2003?) where USC and LSU claimed titles, one a BCS and one an AP, I think its safe to say the BCS champ is national champ.
I know, I know, the BCS doesn’t award a national championship per se, but poll the country and ask who was national champs last year and everyone will say Alabama. That is why the past decade or so has been easier for title-claiming. My problem lay with the 50 years before the BCS.

I guess that's another one of my points.
While it is technically true that college football was invented over 100 years ago, were those guys actually playing college football? Or was it a bunch of Sillynannies running around trying to figure out what the hell was going on? That’s why I relegate my title-talk to post-1950ish.
Black Shoe Diaries
Success With Honor
by Jeff Junstrom on Apr 7, 2010 9:09 AM EDT up reply actions
but that's as arbitrary a point as any other
like any history, college football’s past has to be seen as a continuum. while comparing different epochs to each other is clearly foolish, disregarding the accomplishments of the past is folly as well.
Roll 'Bama Roll: The Champagne of 'Bama Blogs.
I don't disagree.
Like I said, I chose 1950ish because Michigan won their last of 214 titles in 1948 before winning an (arguably) real one in 1997, and I like to get after my future-wife’s friends about that. But also I feel the 1950’s was when college football really started to be “real.” Like it or not, there is some serious truth behind the movie Leatherheads.
But I agree on arbitrarily picking a starting point for discussions. Obviously, as Bama fans, you guys want to start the discussion in the 20’s, and that’s fine. I’m just saying that, IMO, the debate should be around a 60 year debate.

honestly,
we want to begin the discussion in the 1910s. the accomplishments of thomas kelly and xen scott are as important as those of wallace wade and frank thomas even if they don’t have statues in front of BDS.
Roll 'Bama Roll: The Champagne of 'Bama Blogs.
Well then we'll have to agree to disagree.
If I were a Bama or Princeton or Harvard fan, I’d probably want to start the discussion then too. Hell, Penn State can “claim” as early as 1911, but that time in college football just wasn’t as (and I hate to use this word in this debate) relevant as it is today. A crew championship in 1911 probably got more kids laid than a college football title.

The fallacy here
is in the notion that there was an instant during which football started “looking like it looks now”. The fact is that football (like other sports) have been evolving, in ways small and large, since they started being played.
Drawing lines in the middle is pretty difficult to do without looking like you’re just being arbitrary and then trying to justify it somehow.
I'm wrong all the time.
Again, I agree with this.
I know its an arbitrary line. The only non-arbitrary line is the beginning of CFB. My whole point, though, was that national titles in the early years were almost like a popularity contest, with a smattering of groups giving out titles to whomever they saw fit.

As kleph and I debated above, why = the credibility of the awarding agency. Would you, as a true Bama fan, really claim a title if something like The Jake the Snake Fan Club bestowed the award upon you but the BCS, AP, etc all awarded the title to PSU?

i don't know if we debated it
i just was elucidating the types of avenues these discussions tend to break down within.
Roll 'Bama Roll: The Champagne of 'Bama Blogs.
You’re mixing your arguments now. There is no “the awarding agency” — and the reason why multiple titles can be claimed is because there are multiple groups that hand out titles.
Given the number of teams and the distinct lack of overlap in the scheduling of them, it is possible that there has been a time when there were 3, 4, or even 5 teams with legitimate claims to the title.
Once you admit that more than one team could claim a title, that it doesn’t require an undefeated and untied record, and that a team with zero losses isn’t necessarily better than a team with one loss, a lot of these arguments just cease to be meaningful.
I'm wrong all the time.

non-staying question for kleph:
I’m gonna most likely be incredibly busy around the game, but I’m considering flying down with my dad for just the game. What are the logistics behind flying down on a red-eye and leaving after the game? (obviously, if when it’s a night game, I’ll probably have to stay the night, but we’ll cross that bridge later)
Where should I fly into, how long a drive, etc?
"Every player we have, someone-maybe a parent, a grandparent, someone-poured their soul into that young man. They are handing that young man off to us. They are giving us their treasure, and it's our job to make sure we give them back that young man intact and ready to face the world."
-J.V.Pa.
It could easily take you twice as long to get to the game from the airport (Birmingham is your best bet, unless you can somehow get a cheap flight into tuscaloosa regional) on a gameday. There’s really only one major road into/out of Tuscaloosa I-20/59 and pretty much everyone who shows up for the game drives along that route.
It’s really, really bad after the game. Depending on where you end up parking, it can be worse than getting out of West Lafayette after a Purdon’t game. You will want to leave yourself 3 or 4 hours after the game to get back to Birmingham. You might get lucky and make it more quickly than that, but don’t count on it.
I'm wrong all the time.
i typically fly in the day before and fly out the day after...
its an hour or so drive between tuscaloosa and birmingham so you have to take that into account when figuring out the logistics. and don’t forget, on gameday traffic in t-town is going to be horrendous.
the upshot of doing it this way is you get to start the gameday experience in the departing airport. the downside is it’s a pretty brutal way to do it. the reason being flights will be packed with folks doing the same thing you are planning. if you are going to try it you need to get your tickets pretty soon.
Roll 'Bama Roll: The Champagne of 'Bama Blogs.
I'm not 100% sure I could fly in the day before, but I'll look into it.

Info on bars and enjoyment in Tuscaloosa
I’m Bo and I run the show at Egan’s during game days. Much like Kelph said The strip which is a block or so from the quad and the stadium is your pre-game best option. Egans is a smoky dive bar with the best beer selection and we pride ourselves on enjoying football with other fans and draw a little bit more of the “went to school there crowd”. I don’t like anyone being obnoxious I agree that everyone should root and cheer but when people start insulting other people or just being a d-bag they have to go. There are always a couple of d-bags that slip through but for the most part we have a educated crowd that likes to party and have fun. The Houndstooth is tempting because of its huge ass patio but they built a new building that makes you feel like your drinking in a Sam’s club with Alabama memorabilia on the walls. The place will be swamped and their beer selection is a little weak and over priced. I do know several people that love it but it just seems a little soulless to me. There are also a few more bars up and down the strip so I’m sure there will be something for everyone.
As for Mr. Rosewaters comment about Yuengling is everywhere. Even the gas sations have the Black and Tan as well as the Bock. Bars that don’t even sell any nice beer will have this as their on “import?”. Also Rosewater brings up a good point about whats the point in traveling just to have stuff that you can get back home. Alabama has one really good brewery and thats Good People. The problem is that they are only available in draft and because of different contracts with different distributors they are only available Down town (which is only a half mile down the road but with traffic and the need to be close to the stadium is probably better for after the game . That being said there are a few really good semi local beers : Lazy Magnolia from Klin Mississippi (their Southern Pecan is a great brown), Terrapin from Athens Georgia and Yazoo from Nashville Tennessee . They all make good beers that you might not be able to get up in your neck of the woods.
I open Egans myself at 8 am before any football game and have gained a decent rep for my Bloody Marys. I try to make them have a little some thing of everything that will turn your morning around if you had too much fun the night before. Why we open so early is because its easier to park and some people like to get there that early. Its also one of the best times to have non drunk conversations with other fans and just get going. Here is a link to a piece on RBR about egans. I’m the guy who someone commented looked like Kevin Smith. That really got me back to the gym. Please don’t think tis is a really long add about Egans. Egans is not going to be everyone’s cup of tea. I’ll be glad to help people find what suites them best for there gameday experience. As many a person has done for me when I have been a guest in another city.
All in all I think most everyone is looking forward to a great game between two great schools with a lot of history and respect. There are going to be gooberhead fans that have no tact and a very sub par intelligence that makes the rest of us look like asses but from what I can tell every fan base has those people. So if you have any questions feel free to stop in and see me or you can email me at boandnick(at)gmail(dot)com and I’ll be glad to help. Oh and also I run an entertainment podcast and blog about Tuscaloosa were We list everything bands events and so forth on our page wellthatscool.com . Its sort of a Tuscaloosa version of Wayne’s world with a really good events calender.
I'll ditto the terrapin.
LOVE it. I drink it all the time up here in Pittsburgh (at Hough’s). not sure where else to find it.

Egan's is the balls
I, for one, love it. Great college bar atmosphere, and the staff is phenomenal. the patrons are fun and knowledgeable, and even though it is packed on gameday, you won’t have a problem seeing or hearing the game.
Plus you get the benefit of hearing the cheers from the stadium a couple of blocks down. Well, I say benefit but CBS provides an annoying delay.

Some other questions.
- Could you indicate which roads are paved in Alabama? I don’t want my pricey luxury automobile sullied with a mixture of dirt, poultry waste, and discarded banjo strings.
- Do you have an interpretive tour of all of the book stores where NCAA recruiting violations occurred? How much is an English-speaking guide? How much is an English-speaking guide that pronounces things correctly and refrains from using phrases like “yonder there”?
- Why does Paul Finebaum insist on only putting taking calls from the most educated, well-thought, insightful persons from the state of Alabama? I want to know what the common man thinks.
- Does the war eagle come out before the game or at halftime? I want to be sure to be in my seat when it’s flying about.

Series against Rutgers, Virginia, and Syracuse don’t have the resonance of Alabama or Nebraska. Even non-traditional powers can be great if they bring a fun environment and strong fan support like Oregon State did in Happy Valley a few years ago.
Your right..
The problem we have is that we’ve been doing the neutral site games which are all fine and good but as a native Tuscaloosa resident it kind of takes away from the college town field trip vibe I love so much from going to away games. It also means less of a boom for the local economy.

I keep passing by that every day on my way home but I haven’t tried it yet. I’ve been otherwise disappointed with the BBQ selection in town… I need to check this out.

imo...
…being a resident of tuscaloosa for the last five years, i have a few revisions. the strip isn’t really the place to go party anymore. the current university pres. did his damn best to shut the strip down so daddy’ll feel okay sending his daughter to college, since the strip is so close to campus. he failed, but he definitely made a dent. egan’s is certainly a dive, and the houndstooth is certainly loaded with frat boys. other than that, the rest of the bars on or near the strip (also) suck, with the possible exception of the red shed. down the road about a mile is “downtown” or the “temerson square” area. that’s where the vast majority of bars are in tuscaloosa these days.
also, dreamland’s overrated. full moon and mike and ed’s are both easier to get to and, in my opinion, better. the rest i agree with.
Or ignoring Archibalds.

…on Dreamland; if you’ve only been sampling it for five years, then you’ve not enjoyed the real Dreamland. Since the old man passed and his little girl took over, it’s gone to pot. It’s added a bunch of junk to what was a simple menu and a great place to eat.
No sir, I would say you haven’t had Dreamland, but some amalgam of poorly cooked and placed food. Wander over to Archibalds unless you can’t stand a good vinegar sauce.

you also have to remember...
a lot of folks from out of town want a place close by to drown their sorrows/enjoy the victory that has a flavor of the place. these recommendations are not tips for t-towners on where to go drink and not mess with all the nonsense.
that’s the strip.
but blaming dr. witt is kind of missing the point. alabama football has always been a big deal in tuscaloosa but now its a big business as well. until the last quarter century half the home games were played in birmingham. as BDS has expanded and television has brought more dollars into the mix, tuscaloosa has boomed as well.
and for old bastards like me, the strip was the only place back in the day. you didn’t really have a choice about where to go drinking. and you sure as hell didn’t need a sign telling you when you had arrived there.
the strip, by virtue of it’s proximity to the stadium has changed as well. if it’s become more of a gameday disneyland catering to the tourists (and that includes former students like myself who return for the games) then that’s because they have the $ to spend and the various establishments recognize that – not some administration-driven conspiracy against the old guard.
but that’s part of why i like egans so much. you can swoop through the houndstooth and get a flavor of the full on spectacle of the modern strip, stop by a few other nice enough places and then park yourself at a place just scroungy enough everyone is pretty cool to hang out with.
and if there are any middle-aged nittany lion fan that remembers that road trip to tuscaloosa in the mid-1980s and wants to revisit this or that bar he stopped into all those years ago. they will be unlikely to find it but if they go to egans, squint a bit and get two or three beers in – it’ll hit them. i promise.

I tried to follow this for about 75 comments and got lost. My impression was basically that Junny was trying to make a reasonable point that he’s not really interested in what happened before modern football, to which bama fans did the thing I used to when I was a kid: innocently asking “why?” To which Junny should have just responded “because the sky is blue” or something. I’m still not really sure where that was suppose to be going. Bama fans respect the 1910s, PSU fans are indifferent even though we have the same (or at least “a similar”) kind of success. Which is fine, on both ends.

I have a slightly different take on it:
“I don’t like championships that happened before a year that I will not define because they didn’t have facemasks before then. What’s that? They did? Well, I like that arbitrary year anyway because it was significantly before PSU’s first claimed title and, therefore, only serves to lessen the gap between other teams who claim more titles and my team, and if you try to ask me to clarify or justify or explain, I’ll just say we should agree to disagree, but that you are wrong.”
I'm wrong all the time.
I regret getting involved in this.
I don’t see how Junny’s timeline has anything to do with PSU’s success. He didn’t call modern football 1980, and although I didn’t read that whole strong of nonsense, I don’t think “agree to disagree” was ever followed by wrong.
I know about your diabolical plan.
It’s just awfully convenient that none of PSU’s titles are in any way impacted by his arbitrary pick. Makes me wonder if it would be the same if PSU claimed a title from the 20’s. (My guess: no way in hell)
But, yeah, the “agree to disagree” was never followed DIRECTLY by that, but it always came.
I'm wrong all the time.
FWIW, I’m willing to bet Junny’s decision has less to do with ’Bama, and more to do with Pitt trying to claim 437 championships from that era.

This is a silly argument. Going undefeated doesn’t make a title. Going undefeated doesn’t make it NOT a title, either… which it seems that you are implying.

My bottom line point is that if you want to try to take away decades of titles from teams other than your own, you need more than “I like that date” as rationale. The inability to even pick a specific year, let alone ability/willingness define what constitutes “modern football” in any meaningful way makes it pretty weak. If this were a more hateful discussion, I’d assume that he was doing it just so that the “other side” had no counters, because it’s a pretty weaselly way to present an argument. I suspect, though, that it’s just an issue of having never really put a lot of thought into it.

This is the first real point in which polls became less arbitrary/regional (although still very much so) because voters were exposed to schools they had only previously heard about. Just my two cents (and for the record, my school [Iowa]) has exactly 0 MNC, so I have nothing to gain here).

update on the foster auditorium renovations
from today’s Crimson & White (the UA student newspaper):
The UA System Board of Trustees is set to approve the final design of the Malone Hood Plaza at Foster Auditorium, which will serve as an entrance to Foster as well as a commemoration of the building’s history.
The design will include the 40-foot Autherine Lucy clock tower at the center of the plaza with plaques around the base to tell the history of the Stand, the integration, Autherine Lucy Foster, Vivian Malone Jones and James Hood.
Foster was the first black student to be admitted to the University in 1956, but was later expelled over safety concerns by UA officials. The plaza is named for Jones, the first black student to graduate from the University, and Hood, who was admitted in 1963 along with Jones.
If this passes work will occur over the summer and should be completed by october. so it might not be open when the penn state game occurs. as we’ve mentioned before, let us know if you are interested in this and we’ll keep tabs for you.

Ad hominem arguments are invalid (I’m not sure what “false” means in this context) because they draw on irrelevant data (who the author is) to try to logically dispute the content of the author’s argument. What the author says is either correct or incorrect without regard for his/her personal preferences or traits.
So, yeah, ad hominem arguments are “false” insomuch as they (by definition) argue that a person’s argument is incorrect because that person has some trait.

by Kyle McCann't on Apr 8, 2010 5:11 PM EDT up reply actions
yeah. i've had it
chicha is actually any kind of fermented corn drink not just this particular stuff.
in fact, you can buy a crude version of it by the liter in any market to cook with. it’s the key ingredient for cabrito de leche, for example.
about any rural restaurant will offer a slightly more refined version for drinking. in fact, that last picture of the cuy has a glass of chicha behind it.
and then, if you go to the jungle, you can get the stuff you describe. it’s not that bad but doesn’t get you drunk enough to make up for the goofy viscosity. but it’s not even in the ballpark of weird things i’ve eaten here.
there is also chicha morada which is a non-fermented drink made from purple corn that is by far the most popular drink in peru.
but, yeah, i love me some ceviche. and i don’t have to go more than two blocks to get a great big serving of it.

well, judging by the website...
this looks like a mom-and-pop style restaurant making as good a version of these dishes as they can. and, most of the time, that’s about the best you can expect.
the prominent picture of machu picchu on the page is kind of a bad sign. it’s like saying PLEASE EAT HERE GRINGO! most places both here and in the states that serve the best stuff usually eschew this blatant lure.
it looks like they switch out aji amarillo peppers with bannana peppers. this is kind of not good. the former is really the heart of peruvian cuisine. it would be like cooking cajun food without a roux.
still, i’ve found amazing authentic food in less promising locales. so i really can’t tell you if the food is up to snuff or no.

i’m gonna assume you know about the ceviche. i’m a little leery of the way they “cook it” in leche de tigre. typically the fish is just put into the lime juice and that’s it. leche de tigre is a different offering entirely.
choros a la chalaca is a very common and one they should be able to do pretty close to authentic. i’d give it a try.
papa a la huancaina is worth trying if for nothing else than the peruvian olives. i can’t stand them but they are a taste some people love.
i see they have anticuchos. ask them if they’ll do it with beef heart which is the way you get it here. sooooo gooood.
parihuela is fantastic when done right but it’s one of the kind of dishes that nobody but your grandma cooked correctly. i notice they make it with chicha de jora like i described above. good parihela at lunch will make you nap for two hours and then you are bulletproof for the rest of the night.
lomo saltado is one of these dishes that is done best at some scrungy restaurant on the street. but it’s almost impossible to screw up. ask if they have aji amarillo and if so, this is one they should get pretty close to right.
aji de gallina is similar as well. very much a stick-to-your-ribs dish. very hard to mess up.
Roll 'Bama Roll: The Champagne of 'Bama Blogs.
i wouldn't get bummed out
you are partly fighting economics.
peruvian cuisine rests on the unique ingredients as much as the style of cooking. there are more than 9,000 types of potatoes here, you just cant get a lot of the ones they use.
also, it’s one of the richest fishing areas in the world. you just can’t get the freshness nor the diversity.
and if you can get it, it’s probably a place that costs more than your average mom-and-pop-style restaurant. they can afford to ship in the stuff that i can get walking down three block to the market.
a lot of the menu rests on dishes they can do there with a pervian approach. chicharrones = batter fried. all they have to do is serve it with a peruvian style sauce.
peruvian cuisine is getting more popular in the states but chicago isn’t a known destination for peruvian expats. so it’s a bit behind the curve on this.
i’m a bit more harsh in my estimation than most people because i’m originally from louisiana and i see how that style of cooking has been raped by folks who have “popularized” it.
but if you are keeping an open mind about it and willing to keep looking, i’m sure you’ve got many wonderful discoveries ahead.
