Colorado Joins The PAC-10
As I type this, Big XII Commissioner Dan Beebe is wandering around the offices of the Big XII, loading up office supplies and rolodexes in a cardboard box. Colorado has made it official and announced they will be joining the PAC-10.
WALNUT CREEK, Calif.--The Pacific-10 Conference announced today that the University of Colorado at Boulder has accepted an invitation to join the Conference as its 11th member, the first new member since July 1, 1978.
"This is an historic moment for the Conference, as the Pac-10 is poised for tremendous growth. The University of Colorado is a great fit for the Conference both academically and athletically and we are incredibly excited to welcome Colorado to the Pac-10," said Commissioner Larry Scott.
Rumors are flying that Oklahoma and Texas Tech could make a similar announcement at any time. Ding-Dong, the Big XII is dead, and this party is just getting started.

The Colorado/Nebraska game will be fun!
Perfection is not attainable, but if we chase perfection we can catch excellence.

they are probably actually quite pleased with each other
they both make out big time in this deal. And really the Big XII South for the most part should be happy. The real exciting games will be like Nebraska vs Iowa State, or any of the Kansas games.

My wife’s office at CU used to overlook Folsom Field. Beautiful campus. Nice town. Love the uniforms. Love Kordell Stewart’s Hail Mary, regardless of the consequences for PSU. Weird, kind of shitty people, though. Lots of trustifarians.

I have hated Colorado since they beat PSU to break the win streak
Hated that stupid buffalo that was on the field all day. Remember watching that game on TV and just being very sad.
Rumors are flying that Oklahoma and Texas Tech could make a similar announcement at any time.
Would they be able to do so unconditionally? What i mean is, could Texas Tech or Oklahoma (or Oklahoma St) accept Pac-10 membership unless Texas and/or A&M are also confirmed? I doubt they could, so I don’t think we’ll see any of them accept until Texas and A&M have made a final decision as to where they’ll be.
Colorado is a special case, as I would think their invitation to the Pac-10 was not contigent on anyone else. They can easily be added along with one other school (Utah?) and it works.
Colorado
I think the PAC-10 rushed the invitation to Colorado so they could get in before the Texas legislature turned up the heat to include Baylor.

Agreed
The real question is why Colorado is attractive at all. As I understand it, the athletic department and perhaps the entire university is operating in the red. I know that when I go looking for a business partner I’d like them to bring more to the table than the Denver market and a pocket full of IOUs.
By comparison, the Big 10’s get of Nebraska wins in my mind.

Im speaking more in terms of an eventual playoff
Even without that though, if we end up with the superconferences like everyone is speculating, that will be pretty crazy.
I don’t see any reason to believe that these conference changes will lead to a playoff. One might occur at some point, but no reason to thing this will change anything.
Especially if it is the Big Ten and Pac-10 in particular gaining power, both of whom have adamently opposed a playoff in the past.
However...
if it comes down to 4 ‘conferences’ divided into 2 divisions each that sets up pretty nicely for everyone to get each division winner into the playoff and with that kind of rigid structure in place perhaps the Big Integer and Pac Integer go for it, especially if they can lock in playing the first round between themselves at the rose bowl.
I'm not sure if it has been mentioned in the past few days on here
but, with a ‘growing’ B10Network and most likely a new Pac10 network, I could only guess that tWWL would be sucking wind and lose-out on many, many college football games.

I don't think so.
The BTN still only shows games that aren’t really worth televising anywhere else. Its going to be a long long time before you see any marquee games on the channel.

But wouldn't that^ change?
I would think keeping the majority of a growing conferences games — on the conference channel — is what will build their revenues; which I believed was a leading factor from the onset.

Playing in obscurity
Why don’t you ask the NHL and Gary Bettman if they’d like a redo on the decision to switch the majority of their television coverage from ESPN to Versus. You can barely find a televised hockey game these days while in the 90s there was a hockey game on almost every night in the winter.
I'd be willing to bet they would do it again.
Because it’s working now. Versus ratings in the last few weeks of the playoffs were up, and hockey ratings in the playoffs have come way back. People know how to find versus now and it’s concentration on the quality of broadcasts is keeping them there. I’m no huge hockey fan, but versus is turning into a success.
by PSUinBOSSton on Jun 10, 2010 4:20 PM EDT up reply actions
I would have to think that the ratings are reflecting the return to offensive hockey
I watch the game all the time, and have since the Mighty Ducks came out, and the mid 90s until the lockout were nearly unwatchable. All the offensive talent in the game today, and the less restrictive rules have made the game entertaining again.

game three got huge cable rating, i think the spelling bee got a 0.9/3 on ABC
links: http://sports.espn.go.com/nhl/playoffs/2010/news/story?id=5248681
To the untrained eye it looks like those links prove my point.
According to those links the spelling be averaged 3.8 million viewers between 8-10 on ABC while hockey averaged 3.6 million. Or I could be entirely wrong, I don’t really know how rating points/shares are calculated.

your are correct and i am correct
the rating is very low for teh spelling bee, as it was on ABC which is available in a billion homes, so while 3.8 million watched, it was also more widely available to be watched, whereas versus is not nearly carried by as many homes yet 3.6 million watched.

Latest FTT Tweet
Chatter all over the place. Texas could be in Big Ten or Pac-10; A&M could be in SEC or Pac-10. Big 12 still dead man.
Now that Baylor’s been pried away from the Texas package, I think there’s an opening for further in-state chaos. That’s why I’m so surprised at the rumor of Texas Tech making an announcement. That shit ain’t happening unless Texas has made its decision to join the Pac-10 — and the UT and A&M folks were meeting today, with each other.
The Texas Legislature, for all their bluster, could end up proving to have glass balls in this scenario.

Politics
The problem with legislatures is that they move too slow. The conference dominoes are starting to fall and the legislature can’t even come to agreement on when to hold the subcommittee meeting to discuss it.
And like Kevin says, once the dust settles it will be too late for the legislature to do anything. What are they going to do? Withold money from their two flagship schools over something that is said and done and can never go back?

Cut off their noses to spite their face
Exactly. What is the Texas legislature going to do? Withhold funding to the University of Texas and Texas A & M? Seriously? They are going to say “screw our state’s higher education we are going to make them pay” and have inferior schools. How does this even make sense?
we are so moving back to PA when my kids are ready for college
Honesty, since living in TX I have learned how pathetic their higher education options really are. The high schools around us are tremendous, better than some of the best on the Main Line, but all the kids aspire to go to UT or A&M?! No one even MENTIONS Rice, let alone leaving the state. I don’t get it and I don’t like it.
Are you trying to make the same state
that just overwhelmingly approved essentially re-writing or outright leaving out parts of our nation’s student’s history textbooks to support a political agenda, and defend some of it’s darkest times (e.g. McCarthyism is now defended because “some people turned out to be communists”, and ignoring the witch-hunt that was caused by differences of political opinion) seem rational?
Sorry, that came out wrong
It’s nothing against the regular people of Texas (not that there aren’t some lunatics there) When I said state, I meant gov’t (which can be said of a lot of states), and the complete crazy that was the Texas Schoolboard Textbook debacle from a few months ago.
Read "Treason" by Ann Coulter
It sheds new light on McCarthy and McCartyism and is very well-researched with lots of footnotes. For example, one of the things associated with McCartyism is blacklisting in Hollywood. That was the House Unamerican Activities Committee and McCarthy had nothing to do with it.

"I'm colonel cool! And I'm the captain on this rocket to the stars!"
the PAC 10 really needs another decent school
It would be fun to watch USC-Texas every year. If the PAC 10 doesn’t get another major school like Texas then I would not consider them to have gained much by going to a larger number of schools.
Time is a great teacher, but unfortunately it kills all its pupils
But if they have enough for a viable network
It might be worth it to them.
"I'm colonel cool! And I'm the captain on this rocket to the stars!"
It's not at all over
Texas will do what is best for Texas. If the PAC10 is going to “improve” it’s school resume by taking schools like Texas Tech (not official yet), etc., and Texas has the opportunity to finally escape being surrounded by half-assed B12 schools (both educationally and sports-wise), Texas won’t just follow where their state schools have gone. The SEC has already made a push for A&M, which reading between the lines, is clearly a plea for Texas to join the SEC. Texas is keeping it’s options open, most likely to see which conference is willing to bend over backwards to give them whatever perks they want.
This is right in many ways...
Texas and the Austin community in general have a collective self-image that is mostly at odds with that of the other Texas schools. UT sees itself as an academically progressive island surrounded by a Medieval sea.

ever since the Big Ten Network debuted, ESPN has been very anti-Big Ten. Its also no coincidence they love the SEC even more now that they have partnered with them to create teh SEC Network. I am of the firm belief alot of the SEC bias/B10 hate stems from these two networks. They obviously want to promote the SEC so people watch and get a return on their investment

While I have a secret like for Herbstreit, Craig James is a moron. ESPN employs him cause they think he’s sexy. This is going to work out just fine for the mad genius.

If we wanted to go for the KO, we could take ND (assuming they discover a cure for pompous doucheabaggery within the next few months) and another Eastern team, and attempt to corner the NYC market with the last two additions.
Wow, that is surprising.
Especially this line:
Big 12 officials also tell KCTV5’s sources that some Big 12 office employees are planning to be without a job within weeks.
Is it possible that they shutdown immediately and the moves are made for the 2010 season? Or do they simply mean they will be running with a skeleton staff this year and just retain a few people to keep the lights on?

Dude.
That requires a full copy and paste.
KANSAS CITY, Mo. — High level sources in multiple conferences have told KCTV5 that Texas and Texas A&M are looking to move to the Big Ten Conference and have petitioned for membership, while the University of Oklahoma is planning on petitioning the Southeastern Conference to become a member of its conference.
KCTV5’s sources said that Texas and Texas A&M do not have to include Texas Tech or Baylor in their plans. Sources told KCTV5 that there have already been discussions about the two schools entering the Big Ten and that the agreement could be made as soon as Thursday.
Oklahoma is currently working on petitioning to enter the SEC, but must find another university to enter the league with them, sources said. TMZ Sports has reported that Oklahoma State is likely to accept a bid to move to the Pac-10. Earlier Thursday, Colorado accepted an invitation to join the Pac-10.
KCTV5’s sources also said that some Big 12 officials are saying decisions on which deals Big 12 schools take invitations by the end of the day Thursday, although the deals may not be officially announced. Big 12 officials also tell KCTV5’s sources that some Big 12 office employees are planning to be without a job within weeks.
Those decisions would leave the University of Kansas, Kansas State University and the University of Missouri with Baylor, Texas Tech and Iowa State in the Big 12. The Missouri Board of Curators met Thursday and planned to meet Friday to discuss the future of Missouri sports.

Non-Big 10 thought about that article
If true, and Mizzou and TT stay with the other outcasts, they can technically survive as a conference (you need 6 who have played together for 5+ years). Add Boise, TCU, Utah, BYU, maybe SMU and HOU…could possibly work.
Not without a BCS bid...
Utah will get to the Pac Ten. The MWC will get that other bid, litigation will end, teams will be screwed.
Pitt currently has both a better football and basketball team than Michigan.
The Big 10 can comfortably stop there
and take the time to reassess before making an Eastern plunge or something outside of the box.
This is like nuking the Jenga tower.

It will be the equivalent of Urban meyer’s recruiting tactics.
Or better yet
The SEC agrees to invite the entire ACC and then two years from now says the only have room for Miami, FSU, VT, and Clemson.

I think my head will explode if Big Ten gets Texas.
I know the Longhorns fans around us will be like, “WTF?!!!” They have no respect for the Big Ten of course. But seriously, getting to go to Big Ten football games down here in Texas? Would freaking RULE. I could actually see that extending our time living in TX enjoying the sunshine and cheap living before we move back.
Just talked to a UT alum friend who said "F Oklahoma, I want Texas in the SEC."
So yeah, we should prepare ourselves for disrespect.
No matter how many teams are in it, I will continue to dislike the Big Ten.

Last time I checked the Big 12 has done as bad or worse than the Big Ten in BCS games
Oklahoma actually has a worse track record than tOSU in BCS games, and didn’t a second place big ten team nearly beat a “championship” contender from texas a couple of years ago in Tempe?

Big 12 football is the opposite of Big Ten football recently
One gets praised while sucking, the other gets made fun of while being very good
No alarms and no surprises please.
Really? I think it depends if you are talking to alumni/boosters versus t-shirt (casual) fans. The latter would surely diss the Big Ten and prefer the SEC (or a reformed Big 12). But I would think most people actually associated with the school would be thrilled with the Big Ten based on academic association alone. UT actually cares about academics and Austin culturally is quite different from your typical Texas city (much more progressive/liberal, quite similar to most Big Ten campuses).
Second internet source = MUST be true; full copy and paste below link
http://kentsterling.com/2010/06/10/big-ten-expansion-texas-and-texas-am-may-choose-big-ten/
College Station, Texas, based sources close to Texas A&M confirm the scenario of Texas A&M, Texas and Nebraska joining the Big 10, bringing the total to 14. This is totally logical when you think about it. Hence, the "Tech problem", as Texas Tech is attempting (has attempted?) to stand in the way. Everyone knows UT Austin drives the cattle in conference expansion, and well-heeled alumni have (loudly and repeatedly) let it be known they are not enthralled with going to Corvallis or Pullman for 11 pm EST Saturday night games. Conversely, and direct quoting: "we love the idea of Michigan, Ohio State and Penn State road games" at their respective 110,000 seat Casas’ Grande. "We especially like the idea of those fans coming here (Texas) rather than the Baylors and Texas Techs, because those schools will fill hotel rooms and support local restaurants and businesses. It simply makes sense for Texas". He continued, "It will be a bowl game-like atmosphere every Saturday these schools come to town".
Sources also confirmed the rift with Texas Tech and Baylor is that "UT and A&M have joined together in this decision". By adding this trio, UT does not "go to war alone in a new conference" when ongoing issues arise. This scenario also appeases the Texas legislators seeking to avoid any role in any decision (unless its popular and they can later take credit for it). It ensures there will be Texas based programming each weekend, and "Texas based Big Ten football in Texas every Saturday" in the fall, a key element to the negotiations. No empty Saturdays for the State of Texas, or the Big Ten Network.
So it appears Texas is covered.
If Texas and A&M opt to move to the Big Ten, what ramifications does that have for the reported expansion of the Pac-10. Does it then become the Pac-14 instead of 16? Do they invite Kansas and Baylor into the mix. Hey, if Texas Tech can move to a conference with the word "Pacific" in it, why not Kansas.
Now looking to the east, the source confirms a combination of Notre Dame, Syracuse and Rutgers will join in the next phase, bring the mega conference to 16. This secures the New York/New Jersey megamarket. Notre Dame says no more than 14. but does the Leprechaun have any clothes at this point?
Could Notre Dame be left out?
Jack Swarbrick, The eyes of Texas are upon you.
To say this story is fluid and changing by the minute is a huge understatement.
It's contrary to the popular rumors
but this makes far more sense than anything else
No alarms and no surprises please.
wow this article does bring some good points
the Chamber of Commerce issue is one I haven’t considered. Think about the economic impact of a UT-OSU game, or a UT-PSU game. It would be huge. I could see local alumni, and boosters backing this move for that reason.
When in doubt, punt!

Chip Brown says Texas and A&M to BT bullness
ChipBrownOB: There’s a Kansas City TV report saying Texas and A&M to the Big Ten. That would be news to those schools.
I just want to reiterate what I said on one of our podcasts a while ago: it’s highly unlikely that some crappy local channel that doesn’t even have real reporters anymore, or another AM radio station, is going to break anything that is real. Maybe they’ll guess right, but at this point it seem questionable to believe anything that isn’t being said by an actual official or someone (like Chip Brown) who has both already proven they have real sources and has something to lose by making stuff up. Channel 5 or whatever has neither of those things.
I also want to be on record as saying I’m mostly convinced that I want nothing to do with Texas in the Big Ten. I suspect unnecessary drama and/or instability down the road.
I know about your diabolical plan.
From the “report”, which I’m not linking:
High level sources in multiple conferences have told KCTV5 that Texas and Texas A&M are looking to move to the Big Ten Conference and are in talks to join the conference, while the University of Oklahoma is planning on petitioning the Southeastern Conference to become a member of its conference.
For starters, KCTV5, which hasn’t broken a single piece of real news, all of the sudden has multiple “high level sources” in multiple(!) conferences as of this afternoon? As they say on the Internets:

I know about your diabolical plan.
Agreed
I see Texas as being the petulant little brat in whatever conference they join. I’m a Texas fan, but I don’t want them to join the Big Ten if it’s gonna cause a ton of angst and instability in just a few years. Also the reason I’m not overly crazy about having Notre Dame in the Big Ten. I don’t know if I can ever get past my hate to cheer for ND.
You're right.
Our league deserves people that are going to be happy in it. Texas doesn’t want us, they are trying to extract a deal out of us. Bullshit.
They have it in their head that they are going to roll the Big Ten in a way Notre F@#king Dame counldn’t roll the Big Ten. Nonsense. I think we’ll be fine.
Keep in mind, no matter what they say, the reason Texas isn’t already in the Big Ten is because when it came to a vote they were 5-6 and the Big Ten passed.
Pitt currently has both a better football and basketball team than Michigan.
ND
I know enough obnoxious ND “fans” to know that I don’t want them in our club (i.e. the Big #), especially after all the Big10 bashing I hear from the ones I know. Go find somewhere else to call home. I think the Big# could do fine w/o them.
"God is great, beer is good, and people are crazy"
There's a guy over on the Northwestern messageboards that seems to have inside info
PURPLE Chip Brown will eat his words (unless Texas backstabs the Big Ten, which is not outside the realm of possibilities)
He’s called several things right over the last few weeks, from what I gather, so his source seems at least on the inside of the circle.
Was he the one who said Mizzou to B10 was a done deal?
I can’t keep this straight
"I'm colonel cool! And I'm the captain on this rocket to the stars!"
I think they are all posting based on some info and then interjecting opinion based on their own wants.
I’m patient and will let it all play out. I don’t have a clue to believe so I read as much as I can and try to figure it out, kind of like politics. I can see any one of numerous scenarios occurring and someone will have guessed right and be able to scream “Look At Me” at the end of this. I also think this will take a couple weeks minimum to shake out. Too much money involved to be rash. There has obviously been a lot of behind the scenes stuff going on for a loooooong while too.
another update from him.
—-6/11 Evening Update:
There is an unanticipated and fiery power struggle within the Texas academic and athletic leadership over conference affiliation. Notre Dame, likewise, is positioning itself. The Big East is no longer sustainable for Notre Dame.
It comes down to the concessions the Big Ten is willing to make. Will the Big Ten schools allow the Big Ten to scale back to 7 games for certain schools, for all schools, or will the entire conference stay at 8 games? Thought is that if it involved BOTH Texas and ND, the conference will agree to it.
Big Ten believes Texas will not settle for the Pac 10, and that there is a major split within the administration about what is best for Texas. Unclear, at this point, which side will prevail.
Texas also must wait until the Big 12 completely dismantles, and wants to make sure as many former Big 12 members get homes. Pac 10 targeting non Big 12 members as well.
Texas is up in the air – there is real anger that the Big 10 broke up the Big 12 with some Texas decision makers. Other Texas decision makers were complicit all along.

waiting on Texas
guess we find out Monday or Tuesday where Texas will go.
Fuck Texas and Neuter Damn
Pardon the BHGP language, but seriously – seven conference games a year for ‘certain’ conference members? Just go away if you’re going to start that crap in here.

No concessions
I will be EXTREMELY DISAPPOINTED if Delany offers any concessions to UT or ND. I be Nebraska will be ticked too. I just don’t see any BIg Ten member voting for someone and giving concessions. I have a hard time believing the update. I am more inclined to think the Big Ten will wait for ND"s tv contract to expire before adding anyone else.
