Solution for Notre Dame
So, Notre Dame isn't sure what to do. My understanding is they have the following desires:
- Stay independent
- Play a national schedule
- Have the ability to compete for a national title every year
- Maintain their games with their rivals
I've been thinking about possible solutions for them & I came up with one that I think will meet all their desires with only minor downsides: they should move to Division II.
They wouldn't have to join a conference. Teams all over the nation play FCS teams every year. They could compete for the FCS title every year. They could be the FCS game each year for their current rivals.
The only downsides: Fewer home games. Since the FCS has playoffs, they would have to actually earn the title instead just being voted in when they don't deserve it. The last, minor downside is that Notre Dame & its fans would have to face reality that they are no longer relevant to Division I football.

ND needs to realize they aren't Notre Dame anymore and no one cares except for old white men.

The sports guy at my station
actually LOVES notre dame, despite going to syracuse for undergrad.
i make fun of him all the time. he thinks the only way notre dame EVER gives up its independent status is if the big east forces them out via the other athletics. it’s cute.
We are gonna shock them with 5,000 mega watts of raw ROO POWER.
agrreed They need to realize evolution isnt just for darwin

the pope believes in evolution
that’s a common misunderstanding, but he and the catholic church do not debate the existence of evolution
I wouldn't trust old rooster me neither.
Here's my complaint.

If ND moves to the lower division ....
……who will we schedule for our OOC dog of the week September games as they will all be playing ND on a regular basis?

The problem with saying Notre Dame isn't relevant anymore is that it's not really true.
Notre Dame still has the history of being Notre Dame, they may still have pull among recruits, and they have a large and annoying fanbase.
If Notre Dame wants to join the Big Ten, they join. I’m not sure I like that, but it’s just the way it is.

If ND wants to join the Big Ten, I don’t think I would mind. I do object to forcing schools to join, however. Much of the Big Ten’s success is due to how well the member schools cooperate, both academically and athletically. Do we really want to add a school which would resent its membership?
Academically ND wanted in BAD the last time.
Their regents are (who relish their football) are the ones who opposed. From articles I read back then it was unanimous on the academic side of the house. Obviously ND cares a lot more about their fading prestige as a football independent than their academics.
Why not the ACC?

All of that being said, and I think I’ve made this point before, but if Notre Dame absolutely, 100% had to join a conference, I would be totally cool with hopping onboard with the ACC. You maintain a national footprint by playing games from Miami to Boston, with stops in Atlanta, Charlotte (sort of)and DC. You get great basketball – although not up to the quality of the Big East – and a bunch of really fun road trips for students. Even if Notre Dame swapped the non-football sports to the ACC from a crumbling Big East and agreed to a three or four game a year part-ACC schedule, I think that’s fantastic. While they’ve been mediocre as a conference for a while, individual ACC matchups are almost all somewhat enticing, if only for the road trip opportunities.
I’m not attacking the blog manager when I say this, but ARE YOU FRAKING KIDDING ME?"
I don't think he really gets what conference expansion is all about

by his logic
they’re basically already in the Big Ten
agree to a three or four game a year part-schedule
Might as well just make it a full membership now

How to Pop a Cap in ND's ass
Here is a simply solution to having ND join the Big 10. Just tell ND that is they want to play Big 10 schools they have to join the conference. End of story. Then let’s see what NDs schedule looks like without Michigan, MSU, Purdue, and any other Big Ten school. They usually have at least 3 Big Ten schools on their schedule every year. It would eliminate some of their largest stadiums and they’d be in big trouble. Pac 16 teams would have trouble scheduling them with all their new additional conference ties. So they would be screwed. Watch how quick they’d join then.
If ND has to join a conference, why not the MAC?
They already play a bunch of Big 10 schools & the MAC and Big 10 have the agreement that the Big 10 schools will play MAC schools. They can get the MAC’s automatic BCS slot each year…… oh, wait …… that’s right, the MAC doesn’t have one cause schools like ND don’t deserve to be in the BCS.

The real solution for the F---ing Irish
Ignore them. Let them and their self-delusion that they matter rot away in South Bend for another decade or so, and when NBC finally wises up and pulls their TV contract, they will have to go looking, hat in hand, for a conference that will accept them.

I think this is actually the plan.
2016 is when the NBC deal is up, I’d look for them to line-up conference affiliation by 2014.

And by then, they will have almost no appeal to anybody. They would make a great addition to the MAC by 2014…

Sadly, not true.
This goes back to the Nebraska debate about “TV sets in Omaha”. The value of both Nebraska and Notre Dame is that they are still iconic programs readily identifiable to the average/casual viewer. This makes them infinitely more marketable as a selling point for both basic cable subscriptions in new markets and advertising revenue (which, as it turns out, is a far greater percentage of the BTN’s take than folks first realized).

That is still true for the most part now, but another five years of being a 6-6 program is going to change that. After all, times change. If you were having this debate in 1950, you would be saying that Minnesota and Army are “still iconic programs readily identifiable to the average/casual fan.” Well, they aren’t anymore because they quit winning.
