Ahhhh, tradition...
Nothing like it! This matchup could well happen someday in the not too distant future, though.
But seriously, I LOVE the Rose Bowl. Maybe this comes from having grown up deep in the heart of Big Ten country (Minnesota and Wisconsin), but the Rose Bowl is the most prestigious of them all. I try to catch several bowls, but I always make sure to watch the Rose Bowl, no matter who’s playing. I know many on this board don’t care for the Rose Bowl, but there’s just something about it. I’d love to have the money to go see Penn State play in Pasadena on New Year’s Day someday.
Let's Go State!
Well
When Penn State and Oregon played in the Rose Bowl following the ’94 season, Penn State had just completed its second year in the Big Ten and Oregon was fairly new to the Pac-10 (they joined the Pac-6 in 1964 along with Oregon State to make the Pac-8).

"Oregon was fairly new to the Pac-10"
Boy is that a stretch.
Less memorable than Sam Okey's Hawkeye career.

Wikipedia is dangersou
According to the Pac-10 official website “The roots of the Pacific-10 Conference date back over 90 years to December 2, 1915, when the Pacific Coast Conference (PCC) was founded at a meeting at the Oregon Hotel in Portland, Ore. The original membership consisted of four schools – the University of California at Berkeley, the University of Washington, the University of Oregon, and Oregon State College (now Oregon State University). All still are charter members of the Conference.”

I've gone cross-eyed
Oregon was fairly new to the Pac-10
December 2, 1915… the University of Oregon, and Oregon State College (now Oregon State University). All still are charter members of the Conference.
We went like this, he went like that. I say to Hollywood: Where'd he go? Hollywood says: where'd who go?
The PCC,
the “roots of the Pacific-10 Conference,” which did include Oregon, disbanded in 1959. The AAWU was formed, which did not include Oregon. Oregon joined the Pac-8 in 1964.
Wikipedia is not nearly as dangerous as official websites when it comes to putting out misleading information.

Distinction without a difference?
Point being Oregon and Oregon State played Big Ten teams in the 1958 and 1957 Rose Bowls, respectively. Had they won the PCC anytime from 1947 on they would have gone Rose Bowling with the Big Ten.
