Any Penn Staters in Iraq?
I'll be headed to Iraq for approximately one year starting in early September in support of GWOT Contingency Operations, and I'd just like to know if there are any other Nittany Lions (or Big Ten fans in general) around.
I realize that Iraq is not exactly a small place and even if somebody else is there and reasonably close, there's no guarantee that we'd be able to catch PSU's upsets of Alabama, Iowa, and Ohio State, I just thought I'd get a feel for who all is out there.
I'm not going to talk about my specific locations and orders over BSD (I doubt Leman and Stanzi would approve), but if somebody responds to this, I'll try to figure out a means to be in contact with you.

Good luck, Godspeed, and thank you for your service.
What division, BCT, whatever are you a member of, by the by?

I'm an Information Professional Officer in the Navy
Much outside of that and we start getting into borderline classified information.
IP officers conduct all manner of information operations (both offensive and defensive): planning, designing, acquiring, operating, and maintaining information systems and information personnel, leading and managing the Navy’s enlisted communicators (ITs, CTs, communication ETs, and the like), as well as working with space systems and contracting. Big picture, the job is to have the right information in the right place, on the right system, at the right time.
No alarms and no surprises please.
What is your core competency?
Do you work in a cubicle?

I do not
There are some that do work in cubicles and offices, and I don’t mean to lessen their importance. We all have a job to do, and both lives and government resources depend on everyone doing their job well.
Officers don’t really have “core competencies,” per se, we’re sort of expected to be able to walk into any scenario and learn enough quickly to lead and manage it, though people often do find themselves placed in one area for the duration of their careers.
If I had a core competency, it would probably have to be either computer network operations or space operations, as this is what I’ve spend much of my time in the military doing. Obviously, some of these things can be done from the comfort and safety of an office, and some cannot.
No alarms and no surprises please.
I was joking. But thanks for the information.
The military’s not just about blowing crap up!
One more question if you don’t mind: how’d you enter the service?

At least he didn't ask if anybody knew any Penn State Bars in Bagdad!
God Bless, Stay Safe and see if any of those Iraqi futbol stars might be able to kick a 50 yard field goal.
