DAMMIT!
I saw the headline about Paterno hurting recruiting, and fully expected a url containing the letters ‘altoonamirror’ to pop up when I moused over it. Do I at least get credit for being in the right quadrant of the state?

Mussleman's an expert?
So says boy genius Rittenberg on tWWL. I believe Pennlive had the exact same headline a couple of years ago then out of no where the staff puts together a couple of very good recruiting classes. Now we’re right back on the bottom again. These “journalists” are full of incredible insight.

It's so easy to piss out an article like that
It’s like the five years of “Joe must go”. Also, Lemming lost all credibility with me with the statement, “he’s an NFL player right now”. That’s just atupid, this isn’t basketball.
Maybe he meant an
“NFL ready body”. Wait – why I am I trying to rationalize Tom Lemming?
Did Lemming have credibility with you before that statement? Mike Farrell came out looking amazingly balanced.
One man doing the work of 100's for the good of 1000's
Agreed
And its interesting that Mussleman’s article fails to relate how Paterno is actually hurting recruiting despite the headline. I read this Sunday morning in the print version and without noticing the byline assumed that it was Paul Zeise. While there might be some merit to the concept – the article, at certain points, contradicts its headline. Thus, you have the print version of a teaser which, for anti Joe and Penn State folks, did not deliver.
Also, congrats to Curt Warner – my childhood hero.
Paterno and recruiting
Paterno I believe is hurting recruiting by being sick…which is what the article sort of alluded to. But…let’s face it, even when he’s healthy, he both hurts and helps recruiting. Penn State has had really good classes the last couple of years, but this year we are back to struggling. The reason not being Paterno so much, but rather stubborness to actually go and offer MUCH earlier than we typically do. The article correctly points out 3 kids that were essentially locks for PSU change their minds EARLY because of a total perceived lack of interest from PSU. Once a younger energetic coach takes over, things on the recruiting front will be VERY good.
maybe it wasn't perceived lack of interest but true lack of interest.
Maybe the coaches didn’t want to go hard after them.
I hope your right...
…but that is not what I read. You never know. Personally, it’s early to panic. There are still a number of kids we have targeted that if we land, people will forget all about supposed recruiting issues.
My concern is that we are not consistent year after year…that to me is the bigger issue.
You read it?
Oh, well, if it was on the internet . . .
by PSUinBOSSton on Jul 20, 2010 12:49 PM EDT up reply actions
lol...so true.
…but I am not a blind optimist. It is what it is…we have 3 recruits committed so far…only one of which anyone else really wanted. And everyday, more and more blue chippers are going elsewhere. It’s not good…say what you want, spin it how you want…it’s simply not good. Something is different this year than the last two years…I don’t know.
I don't really follow recruiting,
but are Penn State targets really committing elsewhere on a regular basis?
No matter how many teams are in it, I will continue to dislike the Big Ten.

yes...but...
They are, but that happens every year to an extent. It’s magnified by the fact that we only have 3…one of which is considered good (if you believe in the STARS). We are ranked 65th in Scout right now…that’s pitiful this late in July for a program like Penn State. Every year OSU and Tex and Bama and other major programs have a dozen recruits at least by now…but for some reason, we are like Temple this year…lol. I mean…we lost 3 guys in NJ to Pitt!! That’s bad…
even if we filled every scholarship slot we have
with 3+ star athletes we wouldn’t be ranked very high because this is a small class to begin with.

The dumbest quote in the recruiting article
is:
“If he’s not out there on the road matching up against the Urban Meyers and Lane Kiffins of the world, it is not going to help your program; it is only going to hurt it.
I don’t know about you but I’m real worried about Lane Kiffin… And Urban Meyer might fall over from a heart attack before JoePa retires.
Besides that most rosters have players that are mainly from the home region, so you’re looking mostly to secure your home base anyway.
He forgot that Mac Brown never leaves UT to recruit.
he has stated that he wants players that want to go to UT, not that he has to chase.
Because he doesn't have to...
Penn State does not score the cream of the crop in PA anymore…and that’s pitiful fact.
Kiffin? Seriously?
That’s bad even for the P-G.
No matter how many teams are in it, I will continue to dislike the Big Ten.

Correct me if I'm wrong..
But we’ve done the full stadium white out three times, Notre Dame, Illinois and Iowa. Me thinks that the one of the main factors are 1 a late start, 2 early in the season, 3 against a decent (but not necessarily premier) opponent.
Show me the game on that schedule that meets those criteria. There isn’t one.
What do you say when you want a pretzel? MICHIGAN SUCKS!
Never got why it has to be early...
Sure, it’s harder to rock the white when it gets cold, but no harder than it was the past two years with the rain. If anything, it’d look better if simply because the people not wearing white will be wearing blue or something, not the reds and yellows of the rain ponchos.

it might rain in september
it’s almost definitely going to be cold in October or November. As much as I like the white-house, I’m not buying a white jacket to wear once a year, if that often.
I wouldn't trust old rooster me neither.
I disagree with the cold thing
Until MSU 08 and last year’s later games, we haven’t had a “cold” game in years. I couldn’t even tell you when I didn’t where shorts to a game before the MSU game, which was feezing. Besides, get a large shirt and wear it over your coat, isn’t that difficult.
Yeah, but you get 10 of 100,000 guys wearing their deer hunting outfits
and your cool thing just became Northwestern’s blackout.
And rain ponchos look better?

That was a student-only white out
Same as Ohio State in 2005, and Michigan in 2006. Notre Dame 2007 was the first full stadium white out, which is what jesse. referenced.

Michigan this year will be a Student Section "white out"

JayPa loves the beefy quarterbacks
PJ is huge, 6-5 and 235 and Bolden, listed at 6-4, 195, needs to belly up to the training table or they’ll move him to WR.
PJ is NOT 6-5
I don’t know where that article got that info. I’ve met him a few times, he’s only slightly taller than I am (a little over 6 feet), so he’s probably 6-2/3.
Actually, I forgot I have my shiny new We Are Penn State mag to look at, which lists them as follows:
PJ- 6-3, 220
Bolden- 6-4, 205
From what I’ve heard, I expect Bolden has actually beefed up a bit. The collegian had an article about him last spring which said that he’s been in contact with the staff who have sent him bits of the offense to learn, and in addition he’s focused on working on getting stronger. We’ll see what their official measurables are in a few weeks, but that article is definitely off on their info.

We might all want him to suck, but he doesn’t. He’s been somewhat poorly coached/poorly utilized his first two seasons, but he’s not green anymore and they’re going to figure out how to use him.
Whether or not what will ultimately be a successful college career translates into a starting role in the NFL is, of course, a different question. But Michael Vick doesn’t exactly throw a pretty pass either, and he found plenty of opportunities to start.

And Gino Torreta won the Heisman
and wasn’t even drafted, or if he was, it was quite late. I think he eventually played in the nfl, but never started a game.
And Tony Romo played division d-1AA and has the third best career passer rating of all time.
But Darryl Clark, Eric Crouch, and Gino Torreta all reached pretty close to the top of their potential in college. Pryor probably won’t ever reach his, but it certainly won’t happen in college.
To make this fair, I’ll give you a dollar if he hasn’t started an nfl game by the end of 2015. At that point, a dollar will buy you one cigarette, if dollars even exists. We’ll likely be using yuan, discussing recruits for penn state soccer, and going to work on hoverboards.

Paterno Hurting Penn State Recruiting

Why would anyone want to play for a guy like that?
by Tailgate Shogun on Jul 20, 2010 9:06 PM EDT up reply actions
Yes, JoePa is totally killing our recruiting
thats why we pulled in a top 12 recruiting class last year even though it was a relatively tiny 20 schollie class (tiny by SEC standards anyway). And had Easley and Coxson not turned out to have character issues (or whatever the hell happened) or jumped ship for “greener pastures” in the SEC as soon as their offer came (Easley), we would have easily had a top 5 class or near that (not that I’m disappointed in last years recruiting at all).
We nabbed like 7 or 8 of the top 10 elite football players in PA last year, and this year when there isn’t a tremendous amount of elite talent to dominate in our own state and we’re not pulling in stud athletes every other week we’re suddenly SOL and headed down the toilet again as a program? And did they notice before they condemned PSU to mediocrity that this year’s class is actually smaller than the year before it?
I know recruiting is important to sustained success, but come on, it’s not JoePa’s fault, and for that matter there’s no fault to be taken by anyone on the staff. We have a small class, meaning we have to be very selective in who we offer to make sure we fill our needs as best as possible. We don’t have the luxury, or the soullessness, of the SEC who can pull in 30 players every recruiting class, and just cast aside those kids they don’t want anymore because the next hot recruit just came onto the scene. We don’t just throw out offers at kids all around the country regardless of the need for the position we play, just because they’re highly touted. We’re more methodical (read: traditional) than that. Our coaches are able to see potential in the people they hand offers to (regardless of hype, stars, rankings, media attention, camp awards, etc.), and I would argue they do it better than any other staff in the country. I like seeing sirens as much as anybody, but I’m not going to start blaming coaches, Joe or otherwise, just because we’re ranked as the 63rd best class or whatever just because we only have three commits. /end rant
Good post, but...
Stars matter…not all of the time, but most of the time. They matter. Florida, Bama, USC, OSU, TEX, OKL…always have kids with lots of STARS next to their name…those teams happen to always be pretty darn good. I would rather have kids with lots and lots of stars, then kids not with stars.
Either that, or run a “system” and find kids that fit it (See Boise St, Utah, BYU, etc.).
But still…I want the * or **** Not the * or the * or the ** and definitely not *
I have to disagree with a lot of that (and I'll note I may be completely wrong, it's just my opinion)
Stars are the product of recruiting services. They’re creations of people who travel the country to watch HS boys play football. Those evaluators don’t get to watch every player in the country, and for some, the star ranking is inflated because of the school looking at that player (and sometimes the opposite where a kid is hyped and highly recruited and can’t live up to that, but is highly recruited because of that hype), or where in the country that player is playing football, or what awards and recognition the player has received.
Stars may be a good indicator of athleticism, or possessing a certain skill and excelling at it, or being able to dominate HS football competition, but those stars don’t count for jack at the college level. Sure, you are right that there’s a correlation in teams with a lot of success in the past few years are the ones with players with stars next to their names, but how many of those guys actually pan out and live up to their hype? I’d agree that some of the most prominent CFB players are highly rated guys, but if I were to look back at a school like Florida’s recruiting classes, how many of those 5* names do you think I’d recognize now? How many of them ever saw the starting line-up? How do you think Penn State lives up to that same system? In the past two NFL drafts we’ve sent walk-on players into the NFL. How many schools can say the same? How many of them have even given a walk-on a chance to outshine their OMG 5* players?
I’d also be able to bet that quite often with those 5*’s comes an 5* ego. Given the choice, I would rather have a team full of 3* players that other schools refused to consider because they weren’t highly touted, but our coaches took the time to evaluate and develop into good students, good players and decent human beings than have a team full of the kind of players that are attracted to a place like USC, Florida, or Alabama.

First.
We totally run a system, on both offense and defense. And we unquestionably recruit players who fit what we do.
Second, it’s a ton easier to pull in 25 guys in a recruiting class when graduating players is a bonus, not the goal.
It is what it is. We’re not Texas, or Alabama. We’re Penn State.

Then were do you fit Penn State into this?
Since Penn State is a top 10 program for the past 5 years (though obviously if you look at the past 10 years, then the first half of the decade drops us down to basically just top 25 standing) and for the past 20+ years as well. So basically except for a 4-5 year stretch early this decade, Penn State is a top 10 program. I know those years still count, and I imagine some of the decline was due to not recruiting quite as hard as we should have been, but I don’t know. I didn’t really follow Penn State recruiting prior to the past few years, but I imagine the system hasn’t changed that much.
Anyway, the point I’m trying to make is that at Penn State, they seem to be doing just fine recruiting the way they like to recruit. And heck, nearly all of the biggest star rated recruits we’ve gotten that I can recall have all been flops for one reason or another.

Y'know what would be great for media days?
Have you ever seen a political speech where they get liberals, moderates, and conservatives to hold a dial and move it up and down whenever they like or dislike something? I think that would make for a great exercise in Big Ten media days and get fans from all eleven teams to rate the coaches speeches in real time.
