The schools have the kids lay their biggest offers out on the table.
So when they’re recruiting in the future they have this perception that they’re beating PSU out for players.

I really hate that style Bodani is using...
Line breaks between every full or partially complete sentence. Seriously, if they were bullet points, that would be fine, but those sentences aren’t even complete ideas. How the hell does this guy have a job?

I think Plaschke
was on and still is on the U$C payroll….his commentaries during the PSU Rose Bowl made me HATE him more than normally.
The Rivalry Esq.
Bleh, I really wish we’d stop linking to them. That site is so mediocre, it’s hard to even find something to say about them.
On another note, I think Alabama’s success against us depends on their special teams (or ours, however you look at it), and their offensive game plan. Unlike years passed, I think our secondary will be outstanding this year. If Alabama goes in with the same game plan as USC did, they may have much different results. That being said, I’m legitimately pessimistic about this game even if their all-world DT is sitting out.

Bama Hawkeye.
Sometimes it seems like he’s down on us, but he seems to respect Penn State. He admitted on BHGP’s podcast that the last point about JoePa was pure speculation and a gut feeling thing. Also, I enjoyed listening to them talk about Minnesota and Zook and Brewster in a fistfight. How does one schedule USC at home and Middle Tennessee State on the road? Why, it must be because Minnesota is afraid they can’t sell out eight home games.

I don't get the criticism.
A bunch of (unpaid) guys taking time out of their schedules to provide free content about Big Ten teams during the dead of the offseason…and they are “so mediocre” that you wish Mike would stop linking to them?
Disagreement is fine. So is some sort of constructive or even specific criticism. But a vague slam? Come on.
I think you guys do pretty well, considering your audience.
If you want to talk Penn State, you come to BSD; Iowa, you go to BHGP, etc. etc. You guys are forced, much like ARitts, to cover 11(2) teams while providing content for everyone. Thus, your audience is made up of a conglomerate of PSU/Iowa/OSU/Wisky/MSU etc people, none of which can be pleased all the time. I’d be willing to bet that millz’ beef is that with TRE being stretched thin as a B10 blog, the PSU coverage is sometimes not as in depth as we’re used to here at BSD.

“the PSU coverage is sometimes not as in depth as we’re used to here at BSD.”
Very diplomatic, hah. Hey – it’s never going to be as in-depth; I aspire to just occasionally put up something that is different and high enough quality to entertain and facilitate discussion. The other writers who provide PSU content do so openly acknowledging that they are rabid fans of a different school, but this is what they think when it comes to Penn State. The (hopefully) good-natured ribbing/tension that comes with that is what I consider and hope to be one of a conference-oriented blog’s strengths, not weaknesses.
by Paterno Ave on Jul 29, 2010 11:12 AM EDT up reply actions
It wasn't a slight on you.
I’m saying overall, the content devoted to PSU is never going to be as much as BSD because TRE has 10/11 other schools to cover. And I’m sure that if you started providing regular, in depth pieces like Mike, the other writers would do the same and it would just be too much for TRE.
To me, TRE is like the HUB sites that SBN just launched, only the common thread is the conference, not a particular city.

This is just meant in general and doesn't necessarily apply to Rivalry Esq as I don't read it regularly
But just because it is content does not mean it is good content. Mike does not have a responsibility to link to Rivalry Esqjust because that they are unpaid and provide free content about Big 10 teams. If anything he has a responsibility to his readers to only pass on high quality Penn State content.

want a specific example of mediocre?
Do you really think that Michigan is going to lose to Illinois again? That’s one. If they win three of the following four (@Notre Dame, Iowa, Michigan State, @Purdue), they’ll make up the three games.
So basically, they will win 8 games because they wont lose to Illinois again, right? They may win 3 of 4 against these teams here, and then they can make up the other three.
Putting aside the fact that that equation equals only 7, not 8, its an absurd analysis.
On an unrelated note, Penn State will go 11-1. Tehy cant lose to Iowa again, thats one. If they win 2 of three against Ohio State, Alabama and Michigan, they can make up the difference.
There’s also
Last year, Penn State was vastly superior to 10 opponents and dominated all 10. They played two teams that were equal (or superior) in talent, and were defeated by double digits.
… conveniently ignoring the bowl game.
I don’t agree with the “don’t link to them” sentiment, but I can’t say I’ve ever really felt impressed by the stuff there. It’s all really boilerplate stuff.
by Bleed Blue 'n White on Jul 29, 2010 6:43 PM EDT up reply actions
Speaking of the bowl game
After the bowls are all said and done, Ohio State got two front page stories, long self gratifying posts, 2 long posts for Iowa, and 2 posts for Northwestern. And after all that as an after thought, they did a big picture post with about 50 words or less for Wisconsin and Penn State. They call themselves a B10 blog, but when both Wisco and PSU beat big name schools in high profile bowl game upsets, they are ignored. Pryor’s Rose Bowl throwing motion received far more coverage then Penn State handling the same SEC team that thumped Ohio State 2 season ago. I wonder why.

I’m not here to bring anyone down, but I’ve spent a fair amount of time regularly checking that site, over 2 years now, and I’ve been totally disappointed. For the record this all takes place before you became part of the site, so by no means are my opinions of the site at all tied to the work you do, which I’m sure is great. For years it has been a Ohio State Michigan blog first, and then Iowa, and then everyone else.
Moving forward, with the addition of all the new posters and articles — it’s going to improve and I’ll give it another shot down the road. But for me, its hard to get over the crap the old editors have posted (and continue to post), specifically guys like BamaHawkeye, who I think is off his rocker…
Look to be fair, I should have said “BamaHawkeye is so full of it, I really wish we’d stop linking to his posts”.

I agree with you millzners...
we have to replace our long snapper, punter and kicker this year. If it’s a tight game and we have to make a FG from distance I might be more than a little scared. The situation with Dareus is up in the air right now with Dareus admitting no wrongdoing and Nick Saban stating at SEC media days that he HAS NOT been declared inegligible. One thing I really have to disagree with in Pt. 2 of that article is “Ultimately Ingram wasn’t doing anything that special…” The touchdown drive at the end of the game against USCeast did have a lot of good blocking; however, I don’t know if just any back could have done what he did. Looking forward to Sep. 11th and I hope I can make it to Happy Valley next year. It’s a great rivarly with two schools with great tradition. See you in September and Roll Tide!

I've actually come around...
on my opinion of The Rivalry ESQ since its beginning when it was just an OSU and UM blog trying to be a Big Ten Blog. The additional editors and authors have greatly expanded the commentaries, variety of opinions and in my opinion the quality of the blog.
I don’t read it like I do BSD, but when I’m hovering around here reading the same article for the 4th time, I’m more likely now to peek in over there, before taking that 5th look here.

TRE kinda sucks. You get the idea that the people who write have very little knowledge of any B10 teams outside Michigan, OSU and Iowa. Their Penn State coverage or analysis is basically generalities you get from magazines and looking at the roster very quickly. “They are replacing LBs this year so that corp wont be very good.” “They have a new QB so their QBs will be terrible” “JoePa is old.”
Of course, if youre going there for Penn State coverage, you are obviously misguided. Much like the rest of the Big10 media, TRE is about Ohio State, Michigan, and then everyone else.

why the hate
on colin cowherd? i think van pelt and rusilo suck harder than cowherd does. dont even get me started on gottlieb
Because Colin is a jerk
He’s a condescending jerk that treats people that disagree with him horribly. He’s admitted more than once that he knows very little about sports and just tries to be polarizing.
He separated from his wife shortly after the birth of their last child (the child was about a year old at the time). What kind of guy does that? Really?
Plus he’s not funny or creative. His show always goes “Hey dawg, you know how [popular sports topic] is like [something going on in my life]? Yea, that guy is like whacky FM radio DJ crazy mike…..play some goofy sound effect”
i dont really care about him either way
i will say though that every major sports talk radio guy who takes calls treats guests who disagree with them horribly. its an ego thing, they have the job so they cant possibly know less than some joe schmo calling in. You dont really need to be a sports historian either to have a radio show (i.e. mike greenberg, dino costa).
If he ran out on his wife for cigarettes and never came home leaving his wife helpless at home with two kids, then yes hes a huge jerk. But I dont know that as the case and if it was it doesn’t have anything to do with his show either. Again, I don’t really care either way I’m not going to nominate him for radio host of the year or anything, and i see where he comes off as arrogant, but most come off that way and at least cowherd keeps me entertained
After reading your posts
I for some reason got to thinking about early ’80’s sports journalists and for some reason Roy Firestone popped into my head. Apparently, the less polarizing sports journalists end up on AOL.

Joe Paterno, Miles Davis, and Bill Cosby. Oh and.. Mike Sandison and Marcus Eoin, but that’s a little inside. Dave Chappelle too. And now that I’m just thinking out loud, definitely throw Frank Zappa and Tom Waits in there too.
Ok, so my list is (in no particular order):
Joe Paterno
Miles Davis
Bill Cosby
Mike Sandison and Marcus Eoin (BoC FTW)
Dave Chappelle
Frank Zappa
Tom Waits

Florida getting a pass
This goes for the SEC and Big 12 in general and it’s high time somebody brought it up
Idle talk and hollow promises; cheating Judases; doubting Thomases
I agree with your concept
but that Florida point made by the article was a nice piece of bar room trivia, but I think it is difficult to criticize their non-conference schedule based on the fact that they play Florida State every year. Now, if florida State continues to suck for the next few years, they may have to think about doing something different. However, 50% of the Big 10 is in the same boat with Notre Dame.
Who is going to bring it up?
ESPN? I think not.

Besides the Paterno thing
does Rivalry really think Ohio State is going undefeated this season? They say that Kevin Newsome may not be ready to play in the Horseshoe, but I submit that he’ll be at least as ready as Pryor was when he came into Beaver Stadium as a sophomore
8-17, 125 yards. He had one nice TD pass that game (which wasn’t defended properly) and then a short TD pass and a rushing TD.
Can Newsome do that? Yeah, I think he could at least come close… if Penn State loses that game, I doubt it’ll be Newsome’s fault.
John has a long moustache
Pryor
I rewatched that game last Saturday, and I honestly think he played a pretty good game. He threw a great seam pass to set up their first field goal, made Bowman look silly on some runs, and managed the game well. He did what he needed to do, which was not lose it. Reminded me of MRob 2005 against OSU.
I know, I know, blasphemy.
I don't think anyone here has a problem with people saying Pryor has done good things for his football team.
People make fun of him because he plays for Ohio State. He has generated a lot of memes because it seems like he talks like a moron in every interview.
In any event, I don’t remember much of his performance because I turned the game off early, but to answer Adam’s question, yes, I believe Newsome could do what Pryor did if his defense was dominating.
Friend of the Pants since 2009.

Right,
in regards to what Rambler said, Pryor doesn’t completely suck, though I don’t think he’s quite as good as tWWL makes him out to be. Still, I don’t understand how Ohio State is AWESOME because Pryor basically has to “not lose,” and Newsome has to carry 11 men on his back while throwing a 80 yard touchdown pass, or Penn State doesn’t have a chance.
John has a long moustache
Bravo
I completely agree with this and have been saying it for a while. it seems every year penn state has some “rebuilding” position that because there is no experience they cant win.
I also think the only Penn State QB that people didnt worry about when he took the reins was Morelli, and if i remember correctly, he kinda sucked. MRob, DC17, These guys were supposed to be the crutch of the team and I think we did pretty well with them under center.
There was more faith for Kevin Thompson than there is currently for Newsome
but you make a good point about Morelli. And I’m just using Thompson as one example… there are others (Matt Seneca)
John has a long moustache
i actually was going to put Thompson in the above
but I wasnt so sure 1999 was his first season as signal caller. But people had more faith in our backup (Devlin) then our starter for a while there a few years ago. And the Michael Robinson Experiment (sounds like an awesome 80s rock band) at QB was supposed to be short lived as well. I just don’t think its a good idea to write the season off QB wise before anyone knows how he’ll hold up. Im obviously not talking to you, as you agree with me, im just speaking in generalities
Pryor and OSU's secondary will keep OSU From going undefeated.
If they lose to Miami, they’re DEFINITELY going to finish with at least two losses in Big Ten play. Miami will give the other teams a blueprint they need to attack the Buckeye defense.
I still don’t have any confidence in Ohio State’s O-line, having watched their QB eat turf repeatedly against Purdue and Wisconsin. They “protected” Pryor against Wisconsin the same way the Packers “protected” Aaron Rodgers through the first half of last season…

OSU will beat Miami handily
Just like they did to Oregon.
How do you know that?

Oregon was a strange case
Boise State handled them well, but they built back up and up… I think they were the best team in the Pac-10, but then you need to wonder, how strong was the Pac-10? Usually I think the Pac-10 is sold short, but last year, Boise State probably would have been the strongest team in the Pac-10… therefore… yeah Oregon maybe overhyped. Certainly didn’t always come ready to play.
John has a long moustache
I don't know
Just predicting. Let it be known that I am super high on OSU this year. I think their defense will be devastating, and they will win a bunch of games around the 24-6 range. Pryor will not win a Heisman or even come close because he’s not good enough and they don’t need him to be good enough.
I really like Randy Shannon, but Miami is a year or two away. Harris will get beaten to a pulp and they won’t be able to run. After watching the bowl game, I was left thoroughly unimpressed. I mean, Bret was coaching that game and Miami let that happen to them.
Miami couldn't stop the run.
They couldn’t protect their QB, they couldn’t run an effective offense for three and a half quarters, and they were embarrassed on a national stage because they needed space heaters on the sidelines in 50 degree weather. Wiscosnin, on the other hand? The Badgers thrive in that weather.
Oregon’s defense couldn’t have won the Big Ten with Daryll Clark as the QB, Ron Dayne as the RB, and Bobby Engram and Lee Evans at WR…
by OBrienSchofieldismyHero on Jul 30, 2010 2:17 PM EDT up reply actions
My opinion.
I am not super high on OSU. I think Ohio State and Iowa are both going to improve by about the same margin, giving Ohio State a little bit of an edge in my mind in July. I think Ohio State’s defensive line will be great again, but they – and maybe the rest of the team too – may take a little bit of time to “warm up” if you will. I haven’t looked at Miami’s depth chart, but I really expect Randy Shannon’s coaching staff to find some holes. Tressel and his DC can recruit, but I’ve never been really impressed with them as gameday coaches.

on the predictions
not a bad write up as far as July predictions go but there’s two flaws in his thinking
1: Dareus might not be out – there’s many saying he will in fact miss the two first games of the season which would include Penn State, but given his interview with the NCAA and the circumstances concerning his specific involvement in the party-gate he might just have to pay restitution for airfare and be reinstated
2: The write up about Mark Ingram versus ranked teams also has a huge glaring flaw – the freak of nature freshman standing on the sidelines next to him. He talks about carries factoring into Ingrams superior numbers, but never mentions the fact that he split those carries with Trent Richardson, a man who will see a large number of carries against Penn State – to make a point, he points out that Ingram didn’t post ungodly numbers against Texas going about 125 on them with 2 TDs – he forgets that Trent went for over 100 with 2 TDs as well – As Auburn found out you can stop Ingram and still lose the ground war to Richardson
but, like I said, it’s July and as far as preseason predictions go it isn’t all that bad… but apparently some of you Penn State guys aren’t a fan of the site – as site I saw for the first time today – so I have no idea of its validity
