Tom Bradley, Larry Johnson good; details at eleven
I still have last year’s Michigan game on the DVR and I rewatched portions of it last night.
I was interested by one play late in the 3rd. Forcier threw a screen pass to Greg Matthews. Matthews ran for several yards, Sean Lee does his Sean Lee thing where he gets off his block, gets downfield, and starts making a nice, clean tackle. Bowman runs in as Matthews is falling and “assists” Lee’s tackle by trying to spear Matthews with his helmet.
The defense’s biggest needs:
1) Our defensive ends need to get stronger. How many times did Crawford and his boys get pushed around by Ohio State? Especially that shotgun sweep play.
2) Linebackers need to at least equal last year’s production. More importantly, stupid plays and poor tackling need to be eliminated. In close games, missed tackles like Bowman’s whiff on Pryor are deadly. I’d also add that guys like Mauti and Hodges are probably faster than Hull and Lee.
These are objectives that can be met by good players and a good coaching staff. We are not coached by Ron Zook here.
I predict a great defense in 2010 and a 10-2 record. edit: epic fail

Oh, yeah, I’m drinking the koolaid. The defense will be great, the runningbacks are all returning, the receivers are still here, we usually produce good tight ends, and the offensive line can’t be any worse. I can even be convinced of a BCS bid.
I need football back in my life ASAP.

No way this is Rambler's Post....
Must be Bizarro Rambler. I like the 10-2 prediction with defense carrying the day though!
I thought only safeties played 15 yards off the ball?
Hey, man, say whatever you will, I was right about Iowa last year.
I am feeling my oats and you should bet accordingly this fall.

Great defense, 10-2.
Implicit in this is the idea that the defense will steal a win against a favored team. I can definitely see this happening.
But, I also think the special teams, offense, and/or coaching will cost the team a win against an inferior opponent. So, 9-3 for me.
No matter how many teams are in it, I will continue to dislike the Big Ten.

We’ve got NW and Michigan at home. NW is….well, we’re not Iowa.
I don’t feel like going into details, but I think Michigan will be 6-6/5-7 again. Just mediocre.
I would be worried about the game in the Twin Cities, but Minnesota may be amazingly bad this year.

Fine.
12-1, with a loss at Alabama, but a surprise win against Wisconsin.

Maybe the surprise win will be in the national championship game!

I'm willing to cut Bowman a little slack
For 2009 due to injury. That’s a benefit of the doubt, cuz we all some things on the field that make it reasonable to question other factors, but he did miss the first three games from injury and never seemed to regain form. You know, form, like 2008 when he was every bit as athletic as the southern call all-pros.
That said, you nailed it by saying production. Even with two guys missing multiple games, they still posted these stats (Total, Solo, TFL, Sacks)
Hull ……. 116 45 8½ 2
Bowman. 93 52 17 3
Lee ……. 86 47 11 2
Many of this year’s starters come with more question marks than in previous years, but if the lineup shakes out in such a way that Hodges sees significant PT, I’ve got 100% they’ll exceed last year’s production.
Crack is wac
Outlandish predictions
Well, here we go:
1. We will be better at LB this season. Yes better then Lee, Bowman and Hull, 3 current NFL linebackers. Better because they will be healthy, and they will be just as talented (even more so perhaps).
2. The entire defense will therefore be better than last season, better than 2008, perhaps as good as 2005. Perhaps. But one things for sure: Best defense in the B10. We finally remember what a good secondary looks like: Jack Crawford sacking a QB who can’t find anyone open.
3. Even with my predicted top 5 nationally defense, we will still be 9-3 at best. I’m sorry, but I’m out of Koolaid and I’m looking at that O-line thinking Newsome’s going to have to be awefully good to overcome that. I just don’t see it.
Do you want the mustache on, or off?
Too bad.
This team will be too talented to not beat a) Iowa or b) Ohio State. Both those teams have some issues to address before I pencil those games as losses. I don’t care where we play them.
I like my koolaid orange flavored, but the blue and white stuff is pretty good.

DE's should be way improved over last yr
and, I agree with you too millzners, in that the LB unit should also out perform; speed being a premium here. Therefore, the front 7 has the potential to out-perform last yrs (yes, JO’s talent and tenure will be missed as an individual – but Ogbu and a healthy DStill with another yr under their belts…not to mention our 2 deep rotation across the Dline is WAY better than last yr.
(Oh yeah, the 2ndary is almost ripe too!)

P.S. Penn State has a record (since ’93) of 103 wins and 2 losses when scoring 30 or more.
I like posting this.

It's true!
Since joining the Big Ten, Penn State has a record of 103-2 in games where they score 30 points or more. Of course, which college football team doesn't have a similar record.
Nice sig there, jtot.

Lots of optimism about the defense!
I like it. The front 7 have a lot to prove, but they’ve got lots of talent, and two of the best position coaches in the game helping them out. Of course, the flip side to this is that the secondary is already in very good shape for the coming season, which is not always the case for PSU’s defense (I think this fact contributed to the McGloin/Newsome struggles in the Blue-White game).
This defense certainly has all the pieces in place to be a great one. We’ll see if they can deliver.
